The Ebonyi State Government has launched an investigation into the collapse of a mining pit at Ihietutu in Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, which claimed two lives and left three others injured last Friday.

Chidi Onyia, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals, disclosed this during a fact-finding visit to the site alongside federal mines officers and security agencies.

Onyia addressed speculations of negligence by Greenfield Metals Ltd., the company operating the site, clarifying that preliminary findings suggest the incident was a natural occurrence.

“Mining, like many industries worldwide, comes with hazards. From our preliminary findings, this was a natural occurrence and not a result of negligence,” Onyia said.

He noted that investigations are ongoing, involving the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, the police, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“If we find recklessness, we will act accordingly. But if it is a natural disaster, we must accept it as such,” he added.

Peace advocate Dr. Sampson Oko Nweke, Chairman, Human Rights Defenders (HURIDE) in Ebonyi State, called for urgent intervention from Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

Justice Nicholas E. Nwode convicted Ikechukwu Esseh, Ikedinachi Uche, Ukpai Godwin, and Uchenna Kalu after finding them guilty on a three-count charge.

The convicts were arrested on November 28, 2023, for attacking a 7.5MVA injection substation belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) at Education Board Road, Afikpo, in Afikpo North Local Government Area.

EEDC’s Group Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, disclosed the judgment on Wednesday in Enugu.

He said the court, citing the growing incidence of vandalism in Afikpo, sentenced the men to five years on count one, seven years on count two, and five years on count three, to run concurrently, without the option of a fine.

The EEDC commended the judiciary for the verdict, expressing hope that it would deter others from similar crimes. It also lauded the General Youth President and Afikpo Task Force Team for their role in apprehending the vandals, describing it as proof of strong community collaboration.

Ezeh appealed to customers to join in protecting electricity installations in their areas, noting that vandalism disrupts operations and reduces service quality.

Eight die in Ebonyi community flood

Eight persons have been confirmed dead while over 800 farm lands were destroyed in a flood disaster that ravaged a plantain plantation in Enohia Itim, Afikpo local government area of Ebonyi State.

Chairman of Afikpo LGA, Timothy Nwachi who confirmed the incident, consoled the affected families and assured that the local government will do everything to prevent a reoccurrence.

Nwachi urged the people still residing in flood-prone areas to relocate to a safer ground,

“We are deeply sad over the unfortunate incident and we are using this medium to extend our condolences to the families that lost their loved ones.

“As government, we will support them and pledge to collaborate with relevant state and federal agencies to provide humanitarian assistance and timely relief to those affected,” he assured.

The Councilor representing Itim Ward in Afikpo Legislative Council, Francis Abani Okpani said the incident occurred on Friday, August 1, 2025.

He disclosed that out of the eight that died, three bodies have been recovered while five victims were still missing.

He further disclosed that children were part of those who died.

Okpani recalled that the Federal Ministry of Environment had predicted that Afikpo was one of the areas in Nigeria likely to experience flooding.

“I had earlier implored the people of Afikpo to incorporate climate change projections into flood-risk management plans,” Okpani said.

He also urged residents of the local government to ensure that they have effective drainage systems and keep their drains and waterways clear of debris to prevent blockages.

Ebonyi State Government has issued a warning to residents as massive flooding continues to destroy farmlands across several local government areas.

According to the 2025 seasonal climate prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NIMET), Ebonyi is listed as a high-risk flood zone.

That forecast is now playing out as heavy rains are flooding communities and submerging farmlands, especially in Izi, Abakaliki and Ikwo.l9cal government area.

Farmers are counting their losses. Large areas planted with rice, yam and cassava are now under water.

One of the residents whose farmlands was flooded in Abakaliki, capital of the state, Felix Ezeaka called on the  government to step in quickly for relief and support.

“We are begging the state government to do something about it. If we plant rice, and the same thing, the flood will cover it. If we plant cassava, the flood will cover it. We don’t have anything to do about it”

The Commissioner for Environment, Victor Chukwu, blamed the current situation in the capital city of Abakaliki partly on an incomplete drainage project by the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project,( NEWMAP).

He said the halted project is worsening the impact of rainfall in the capital city.

“The second phase of the NEWMAP is called EIB NUMAP. So, we have designed the sites, because the issue is that the water that is supposed to discharge to the river flows back to the city because the river appears to be higher than the slope of the discharge of water that is collected in the city.

“So, we have designed the sites.

The state has also paid counterpart fund. Our government ror graciously approved the payment of the counterpart fund for the EIB NUMAP”, he said.

Chukwu said the government is now conducting public awareness campaigns and holding town hall meetings to guide residents on flood prevention steps.

According to him, people living in low-lying, flood-prone zones are being advised to relocate to safer locations as the rains continues.

Among those previously targeted in the crisis were a former Chairman of Edda Local Government Area and former House of Assembly member, Dr. Eni Uduma Chima, and his younger brother, Chima Uduma Chima.

The two narrowly escaped death when gunmen opened fire on their SUV, riddling it with bullets.

In the wake of that attack, both brothers were pronounced persona non grata and allegedly banished from the community for seven years by some residents, who accused them of instigating communal unrest.

The already tense situation escalated on Wednesday following the killing of one Udu Nnachi Uzor in Ndenworo village.

According to his wife, Onyinye, who spoke to journalists in a telephone interview, the assailants—allegedly members of a vigilante group known as Catcham Boys—stormed their residence around noon.

A community leader, Etta Egor, condemned the incident and described the activities of the vigilante group as a threat to peace and security in the area.

“We saw them moving through the villages armed with pump-action rifles, accompanied by soldiers and policemen. Not long after, we heard gunshots. When we got to Nnachi Uzor’s house, he was already dead. His wife and children were in tears,” Egor narrated.

Also yesterday, Ebonyi House of Representatives’ Caucus called for the arrest of the assailants.

He said the suspect is currently assisting the police in their investigation.

The CP, however, reiterates that the incident is not a targeted attack on any indigene of any state, but a cowardly action of the common enemies of the state.

Its Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, assured that the command shall hunt down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Ikenga said that the armed criminals came in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and attacked the gathering of a group unprovoked, shooting sporadically.

    Ebonyi revives pipe production company

The Ebonyi State Government has breathed life into the long-dormant Ebonyi State Pipe Production Company, located in Ezzamgbo, following a comprehensive revival effort championed by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

Speaking in an interview, the General Manager of the company, Mr. Uchenna Otuh, a legal practitioner, expressed deep appreciation to the governor for his vision and commitment to industrial revival in the state.

According to him, the company, which had been inactive for several years, is now fully operational following the purchase and installation of three brand-new machines.

“These machines produce a variety of high-quality pipes including PVC pipes for wastewater, conduit pipes for electrical installations, and HDPE pipes for industrial jobs,” Otuh said.

“This is a clear reflection of the governor’s intentional and methodical leadership style as captured in his People’s Charter of Needs governance agenda.”

Otuh also commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for further equipping the plant with additional machinery, including a state-of-the-art pulverization machine.

He explained that the machine enables the company to recycle production waste by converting it into raw materials, which are then reused in the manufacturing of new pipes — significantly reducing waste and improving production efficiency.

Otuh noted that the revival of the pipe production facility is already making a tangible impact on the local economy.

“Distributors no longer have to spend heavily on transportation to get quality pipes. Proximity has drastically reduced their transport cost, sometimes from ₦500,000 to less than ₦50,000,” he explained.

He added that the company’s products, especially the conduit pipes, are already earning a reputation for their durability and strength.

“We demonstrated the quality today, and everyone could see that our pipes are the best. The market is responding positively,” he said.

The manager acknowledged that while not all local builders have begun sourcing from the company, awareness is growing, and more are expected to key into the initiative.

“I’m a realist. We are gaining ground gradually. The narrative is changing—people now know that Ebonyi is producing the best pipes.”

Addressing contractors and builders, especially those executing government contracts, Otuh appealed to them to patronize the company.

“The governor has given you jobs to empower you. In turn, buy from this state-owned company so that the economy reflects that empowerment. When money circulates here, our people grow,” he urged.

He noted that the company is not only serving Ebonyi State but also reaching other parts of the country.

“We already have an Ebonyi indigene based in Port Harcourt who is one of our major distributors,” Otuh revealed.

He said the company is in talks with distributors form other states who are interested in lifting products from the company.

The revival of the Ebonyi State Pipe Production Company stands as a landmark achievement in Governor Nwifuru’s administration, signaling a renewed focus on industrialization and sustainable economic development in the state.
