Doctors seek FG’s intervention in Ebonyi hospital’s crisis

Concerned medical health practitioners from the Old Ohaozara block have called on the federal government to intervene in the ongoing crisis at the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) in Ebonyi State.

The plea was made by the Medics under the Old Ohaozara Medical and Dental Consultants Forum in a statement issued in Abakaliki.

The statement was signed by the Forum’s President, Dr. Kenneth Okoro, and Secretary, Dr. Mcsteve Okeke.

The hospital has been embroiled in a crisis following a protest last week by members of the host community, Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area, against the hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Uzoma Agwu.

The hospital staff staged their own protest in support of Prof. Agwu, but were reportedly threatened by community leaders and youths.

This led to Resident Doctors threatening to down tools unless the situation is addressed.

Governor Francis Nwifuru and the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who is also the founder of the hospital and a native of the community, intervened in the matter last week.

However, the Old Ohaozara Medical Consultants Forum expressed their dismay over the turmoil in the hospital, stressing that such issues should not be occurring in what they described as “the most beautiful and best-equipped public hospital in Nigeria.”

The forum attributed the crisis to a rivalry between Prof. Jesse Uneke, the Vice-Chancellor of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) Uburu, and Prof. Uzoma Agwu, the hospital’s CMD.

They claimed that the conflict stemmed from disagreements over which institution should oversee the clinical service departments, centers, and units.

The doctors further alleged that the Vice-Chancellor seeks to have a supervisory role over the teaching hospital, which they argue is an “aberration” of the highest order, as worldwide, clinical services are managed by teaching hospitals.

They emphasised that DUFUTH should not be an exception in this regard.

The Forum also noted that in Nigeria , the University is supervised by the Ministry of Education while the Teaching Hospital is supervised by the ministry of health.

“We are surprised that the healthy collaborative relationship for

medical education which exists in all other institutions in Nigeria is lacking between DUFUHS and

    DUFUTH .

“The two agencies/institutions of government are autonomous with the University led by a governing council and the Teaching Hospital led by a Board of Management. None should play a

supervisory role over the other ; their service mandates are separate but complementary”, they said.

They regretted that the climax of the unhealthy scenario in DUFUTH is the recent orchestrated protest by natives in the hospital leading to the relocation of the venue for interview of prospective staff to Abakaliki with all the undesired implications.

The Forum regretted that as a result of the crisis, their colleagues working in DUFUTH have become demoralized and are now considering other options for their services.

“We observe that at a period when Nigeria’s health sector has witnessed unprecedented exodus of healthcare professionals, it is counterproductive to demoralize the patriotic ones who chose to serve their fatherland.

“As indigenes of Old Ohaozara Division and professional stakeholders in DUFUTH, we are worried by the potential negative impact of the unease at the hospital on service delivery, medical education and research against the background of the lofty vision of its establishment to reverse medical tourism to the benefit of Nigeria.

“The peculiarities of DUFUTH as a potential centre of excellence with state of the art facilities located almost equidistant between two other prominent Teaching Hospitals requires the collective support of the host community, the government and all stakeholders to actualize the vision”, they said.

They caommended the Minister of Works, David Umahi and Governor Francis Nwifuru for wading into the matter.

They, however, called for the immediate intervention of the supervising federal ministries of education and health to clearly delineate the service mandates of the two federal institutions and facilitate a memorandum of understanding between the University and the Teaching Hospital.

“They also called for the donation of shuttle buses to ply designated routes to convey only patients at free or heavily subsidized fares to and from DUFUTH, given the paucity of public transport services in the area.

This, they said, will remarkably improve patronage of the hospital in view of the location.

They called on DUFUTH management to intensify the ongoing medical outreaches for care of patients and sensitization of the public on available services in the hospital.

The forum also charged the Management to also ensure that Staff performs their duties efficiently and effectively in a conducive working environment.

They also urged stakeholders to embrace the counsel/admonition of their leaders to incline to the growth and excellent development of the hospital in a peaceful conducive environment.

  • Ebonyi dismisses reports of Commissioners’ arrest

Ebonyi dismisses reports of Commissioners’ arrest

Ebonyi State Government has described reports that Gov. Francis Nwifuru ordered the arrest of five Commissioners over delay in delivery and breach of contracts as false.

Chairman of the Ebonyi Executive Council (EXCO) committee on Supervision and Completion of two state housing projects, Donatus Ilang made the denial in a statement on Wednesday.

The projects are the 140 housing units for the Izzo and Amaze communities, which were displaced by the Ezilo/Ezza Ezilo communal crisis in Ishielu Local Government Area.

Ilang, who is also the Commissioner for Border, Peace and Conflict Resolution, described the reports as fake news.

He said: “No commissioner was arrested and you can confirm this from the police and other security agencies.

“The people writing such fake news are doing so from their imagination.

“We informed them of the Governor‘s displeasure over delays in the project and resolved to take drastic actions on the defaulters.”

He noted that the commissioners promised to furnish the committee with relevant information which would enable it confront the erring contractors.

Ebonyi Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu said no commissioner was in Police custody.

“We did not arrest any commissioner,” he said.

  • No rift between Nwifuru, Umahi, says Ebonyi APC Chairman

No rift between Nwifuru, Umahi, says Ebonyi APC Chairman

The Chairman of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, has debunked rumours of a rift between the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, and his predecessor and Minister of Works, David Umahi.

He stated this in an interview at the party’s head office in Abakaliki, capital of the state .

Emegha, who spoke ahead of the kick-off of the party’s sensitisation tour across the 13 local government areas, said Nwifuru and Umahi were enjoying a good working relationship.

He explained that the essence of the sensitisation tour was to galvanise the party and ascertain their challenge.

“The essence is not far-fetched. One is to reawaken the spirit of our members. It is also essential to pay a visit to the home sector of our party to find out their challenges and look at the area where we can assist them as a party. It is not good after the campaign and election, we have not visited them again,” he stated.

He further explained there was a need to replace party officials that have been elevated to other positions, even as he dismissed crises in local government areas.

“And again, if you have a child that is staying far away, it is important that you visit him from time to time. There are no issues in any local government area.

” We want to go and find out because, in some wards and LGAs, there are some officers who have been elevated to other positions like supervisory councillors, and management committee members. We also want to see how we can do a possible replacement.

“It is to the glory of God. The Governor must have viewed it from the angle that if they go to other states, there is a crisis in the party, but in Ebonyi State, there is no crisis.

“We know that managing human beings is very difficult. But it has been a team effort, not only me, and that might be why the governor endorsed me.

“How can there be a crisis between the governor and the minister of works? APC is a principled party, such that everybody knows where his work starts and ends. There is nothing like a problem between the two of them.

“The minister and the governor have a good working relationship. The governor and the minister are aware of this tour. They are the leaders of the party, and we are caretakers.”

Emegha said the party is working hard to bring on board more members of opposition parties so that they will join hands with Governor or Nwifuru to move the state forward.

“On a daily basis, we keep going to the opposition to join the party. Very soon, we are going to do a programme in Ezza South where all the people who worked against APC in eight local government areas will come back. So there is going to be a heavy defection at the grassroots, where all the structures will join APC.

“I have visited Julius Ama, Ochiri Edda in Lagos, and I know by Easter, he is going to give me a response. I am appealing to all Eboyians who are into politics to come and join us. It is a big family. They should come and contribute their ideas.

“Thank God that the governor is doing much, but as one man, he cannot do it alone. He needs ideas from other people,” he said

  • Ebonyi govt, PDP clash over alleged double taxation, economic hardship

Ebonyi govt, PDP clash over alleged double taxation, economic hardship

The Ebonyi state government and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are at loggerhead over allegations of double taxation and worsening economic hardship in the state.

The dispute follows a series of protests by tricycle operators, commercial motorcyclists, and truck drivers at the Abakaliki Timber Market, who accused the state revenue board, its agents, and unions of imposing multiple levies.

A PDP chieftain, Moses Idika, expressed concern over the protests, blaming the state government for burdening residents with excessive taxation.

He claimed the policy was crippling businesses and making life increasingly difficult for the people.

“The issue of double taxation in Ebonyi State is a major concern because it is squeezing life and businesses out of the people,” Idika stated.

The state government, however, has yet to respond to the allegations.

“Even with the pervasive poverty and lack in the state, all manner of toll collection is a major source of income for friends of the government.

“I sincerely suggest that the government of Governor Francis Nwifuru, think of first creating an enabling environment for small businesses to thrive in the state first before these multiple unaccounted taxes.

“Create industrial cluster in the state capital, come up with clear investment incentives then people will bring in money then you can tax.

But the State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Mr. Jude Okpor described the allegation of double taxation in the State as fake and calculated attempt by the opposition party to undermine the good works of the present administration.

“First of all, let me tell you practically that there is nothing like double taxation in Ebonyi State. They only intends to undermine the effort of the government in controlling the working and favorable business environments in the state.

“That is the work of the opposition. There is the need for journalists to take a step forward without only relying on what the representative elements are saying or rely on what I am saying from the side of the government. You can approach the businessmen and make inquiries.

“Before now, people used to pay heavy taxes for their businesses and it was so challenging but it is no more in existence.

“There is no double taxation in the state. I can tell you that the business environment in the state today under the present administration, has been very favorable to all kinds of businesses.

“And that is why you can see, government have made it very clear, over and over again that the government is not interested in taxing low income earners in the state.

‘That is why the State is giving massive orders to the agencies in charge of revenue generation to leave the low income earners in the state especially people from the villages that usually come to the town to sell their farm produce to make a living.

“Yes, the state wants resources. We want an increase in the internally generated revenue. But not at the expense of the citizens of the state, particularly the low income earners.

Mr. Okpor stated that the recent protest by truck drivers at the Timber shade market is an internal disagreement of the truck drivers, timber dealers and the management of the timber market.

“You see, there is a new leadership that came on board. From the investigation I made, I came to find out that the new leadership increased the money that the truck and other vehicles carrying out businesses in the market are supposed to pay.

“And this they did without the consent of the state government.

So when the issue came up, the commissioner for Parks and Market Development in conjunction with the Commissioner for Transport stepped in to make sure that the issue is resolved amicably.

“So, if anybody is telling you that the protest is as a result of double taxation by the government, there is nothing like that at all. As a union, members have obligations to the union and the market.

“People in the market have obligations to the market, the market association and then the one that is due to the government has been resolved. In fact, it is even more business friendly than what it used to be.

He stated that government cannot completely regulate the activities of the unions since they are considered as worthy partners making sure that the business environment is not only meant to be favorable but the environment and the structures that are put in place here are maintained. Ends

The Information Commissioner noted that following the intervention of the commissioners In-charged, the matter would soon be resolved.

“Let nobody deceive you. If there is any small disagreement somewhere, people will just take it out from context and try to drag the image of the government to the mood. Anyway, that is the work of the opposition. But then, the opposition should not be established on falsehoods.

Tinubu flags off DUFUHS cancer centre In Ebonyi

President Bola Tinubu has flagged off the Cancer Centre of Excellence at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, in Ebonyi State.

He also flagged-off a Comprehensive Medical Outreach Initiative and the Skill-up Empowerment for citizens of Southeast under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Outreach and Empowerment is powered by the Senior Special Assistance to the President on Community Engagement (Southeast), Chioma Nweze.

The President at the event, charged the university’s management to ensure the enhancement of cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment of Nigerians.

Represented by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, the president said that the centre will help in ending medical tourism usually embarked by Nigerians.

Umahi commended the hospital’s management for carrying out free dialysis services to the people of Nigeria, and expressed the confidence that the hospital will go a long way in restoring hope and confidence to the Nigerian people.

He also commended President Tinubu for donating a 2000 kilowatts of solar power to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Unit of the hospital.

According to him, the unit in the university remains the centre in the South-East and urged Nigerians to visit the centre for their healthcare needs.

Mrs Nweze described the flag-off of the cancer centre in Ebonyi State as a critical intervention designed to provide free medical services to the South-East zone, particularly to those who cannot afford healthcare services.

She noted that President Tinubu’s administration recognises that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right.

She stated that it is the responsibility of his administration to ensure that every individual in the region has access to quality healthcare, regardless of their background or financial situation.

“Our Medical Outreach Initiative is a multifaceted programme that will provide a range of free medical services, including cancer screening for six months, free eye screening, and medical glasses to the first 200 patients.

“We will also provide dialysis treatment to patients for one year. These services will be delivered by a team of highly-trained medical professionals here at DUFUHS, using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

“As we launch this programme today, we do so with the conviction that every life is precious, and that every individual deserves access to quality healthcare.

“We believe that by working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our people, and create a healthier, more prosperous future for ourselves and generations to come,” Mrs. Nweze said.

“Our participants will be selected from each of the 97 Local Government Areas in the South East, ensuring that every community is represented.

“We believe that by providing our youths with the necessary skills and resources, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come”, she said.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Jessy Uneke said that the University’s cancer centre will operate with the use of advanced technology for diagnosis of cancer and related diseases.

He maintained that the report indicated the number of deaths to stand at 79, 542 of which 32, 905, (41.4%) were males while 46,637, (58.6%) were females.

He noted that the top three leading cancers in males in Nigeria ranked by the number of deaths are prostrate cancer, colorectum cancer, and liver cancer while breast cancer, Cervix uteri cancer and colorectum cancer are the top cancer cases responsible for death among females.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that a total of 207 cancer patients have so far been treated at the DUFUHS Cancer Centre from which 88 (42.5%) were males while 119, (57.5%) were females.

He also added that a total of 107 of the patients, representing 51.7% were between the ages of 40 and 69 years old.

  • Puzzling killings in Ebonyi

    Puzzling killings in Ebonyi

How did suspected herdsmen succeed in wreaking havoc on three Ebonyi communities despite assurances of safety given to them by their state government and security agencies?

That is the big puzzle the federal government has to untangle in penultimate Sunday’s massacre by suspected herdsmen of 15 innocent people in the Amagu, Amaokwe and Umunesha villages of Nkalaha, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The inquisition is made more compelling by indications that both the Ebonyi State government and the security agencies were privy to potential threats to law and order in the community prior to the unfortunate killings.

Why that threat could not be diffused such that it snowballed into the wanton killings and destructions witnessed in the three communities justifies a high-powered inquisition by the federal authorities.  Accounts of what led to the killings are largely foggy. But it was said to be connected to alleged killing of some cows belonging to the herdsmen.

It is not certain the number of cows killed, the circumstance of the alleged killing, and those behind them. But while some reports blame the so-called Eastern Security Network (ESN), others suspect they were done from within the communities. The alleged killings of the cows had led to schism between the herdsmen and the communities with attempts by all parties including the state government and security agencies to resolve the matter.

But these efforts hit the rocks when suspected herdsmen attacked the communities as residents went to church penultimate Sunday, killing those in sight, burning a total of 25 houses, yam barns and other valuable properties. Reports from residents after the attacks expressed displeasure on the handling of the crisis by agents of the state government and the security agencies. The pervading feeling is that the killings could have been averted had the state government and the security agencies taken the necessary preventive measures when threats of a possible attack by the herdsmen hovered on the air.

The traditional ruler of Nkalaha community, Igwe Thompson Ebe showed obvious frustrations as he threw some insight into the duration of the crisis and efforts made to stem the tide. He said the trouble started on January 20, and dragged to January 31.

“We have continued to mediate between the Agila in Benue State and the Fulani herdsmen. I even invited them to my house in Abakaliki to talk to them about the cows that were allegedly killed. We have even made some arrests to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. As we were still talking, this ugly incident of killing took place on Sunday”, the traditional said with regrets.

If the traditional ruler’s account of the duration of the crisis and the prospects it presented for possible resolution does not throw up serious challenges on the handling of its possible threat to law and order, that of residents on the roles of the Ebonyi State government and security agencies lend themselves to serious interrogation.

A community leader from area, Elder Simon Idenyi who spoke to the media had reasonable cause to accuse the state government and security agencies of aiding the herdsmen in the atrocities they committed. He said that on February 1, officials of the Ebonyi State government, the military and police authorities came to them that they wanted to make peace between them and the Fulani herdsmen.

“After discussions with elders of the community, including women, they told us that the problem we had with the Fulani herdsmen had been resolved. They encouraged us not to leave our houses that the government and security agencies are here to protect us. They assured us that nothing will happen to us.

“Regrettably, at about 9.30 am, strange faces we understood were Fulani herdsmen wielding AK-47 rifles and machetes surrounded the community and started killing anyone on sight and burning houses randomly. There was no security agent in sight while the carnage lasted. The attack started at 9.30 am and till they left the community around 3.30 pm; no single security agent came until around 5pm”, he further lamented.

The community leader said the herdsmen took time to enter every nook and cranny to carry out their attack including a church where they killed two worshippers. Other residents alleged that security agencies left the area on Saturday only for the herdsmen to attack them the following day. Other allegations bordered on the seizure of their phones by soldiers preventing them from recording the gruesome killings with warnings of severe consequences should videos or pictures of the killings and destructions make their way into the social media space.

“They (soldiers) later returned the phones after residents had recovered 10 corpses including that of a retired policeman”, one other resident whose phone was seized recounted.

If the account of the meeting between officials of the state government, the military and the police during which they gave assurances of safety to the communities and asked them not to leave their homes is a true reflection of events, the eventual attack, killings and destructions raise serious questions. This is more so given their duration and magnitude.

The attack was said to have started around 9.30 am as people were in the churches and lasted till 3.30 pm. That should give ample time for information to get to the relevant security agencies to respond to the challenge. It is surprising that the attacks could go on for that long without the authorities coming for the help of the defenceless communities. And if the security agencies were promptly on ground to contain the attack as insinuated in some quarters, the gravity of the killings and destruction of properties weakens such claims.

In an attack of the magnitude that took place in the three communities, one would have expected to hear of the arrest and neutralisation of some of the invaders by the security agencies as the mayhem was on. That would have served as a clear evidence to countermand the claims of residents. But nothing of such is of public knowledge.

Though the deputy governor of the state, Patricia Obila acknowledged that without the intervention of the security agencies, the casualty level would have been higher, she did not indicate at what point they arrived the scenes of the killings and culprits arrested for the heinous crimes.

But she could not have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the security agencies to arrest the killers had some arrests been made in the course of the attacks. Frustrations were evident in her lamentations: “No government is happy to see their citizens being killed in a bloody manner. This is a horrific scene to behold. If you look at the corpses, they are a younger generation that were lost”.

The deputy governor hit the uncanny irony of the matter on the head when she lamented that most of the corpses lying out there did not even know what was happening – a reference to the alleged killing of cows that led to human killings and destruction of property. Incidentally, the killings in the Ebonyi communities epitomise the unfortunate fate of the country in disagreements between herders and host communities.

This is not the first time Ebonyi people have been mindlessly killed by suspected herdsmen over disagreements bordering on alleged destruction of farmlands, crops or the killings of cows. Unfortunately, in those earlier incidents just as in the present one, the invaders operated with an air of invincibility disappearing into the thin air after their atrocious escapades.

Neither were arrests made nor credible intelligence provided for unmasking the standing force avenging any alleged wrong to the herdsmen across the country. This seems to have emboldened those avenging perceived wrongs to the herdsmen into the mindless reprisal killings seen across the country. But this sordid profile only reinforces suspicion, resentment and conflict between host communities and the herders. Before now, it was thought that the herdsmen were able to carry out the attacks and go scot-free because of the sympathy of the last regime to their cause.

But the killings have persisted though on a lower scale. President Tinubu has to do something substantially different to halt the frequent resort to lawlessness by suspected herdsmen each time there is disagreement between them and their host communities. It has become a huge national embarrassment that a group of people can easily go on rampage against their host communities killing and maiming them only to escape without any trace. There is definitely more to it than ordinarily meets the eyes.

NUT declares indefinite strike in seven Ebonyi LGAs over unpaid salaries

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ebonyi state has declared an indefinite strike in seven local government areas in the state.

The strike action, the union said, is due to non payment of at least three months salaries to some teachers in the affected local government area.

A statement by the union’s secretary, Bassey Asuquo listed the affected local government areas as Ebonyi, Edda, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ivo, Ishielu and Ohaukwu.

The statement reads: “Sequel to our earlier notice on mobilization for industrial strike action, we have thoroughly reviewed the compliance of local government chairmen regarding the clearance of our members’ salaries.

“As of the close of work today, February 5, 2025, we acknowledge that certain local government areas have cleared the salaries of our members.

Death toll in Ebonyi herders’ attack hits 15

    • Many still missing

The death toll in the Sunday attack by suspected herders  in Ebonyi State has risen to 15.

Also, investigations indicated that apart from Amagu, which was reported as the village that was attacked, two other communities of Amaokwe and Umunesha in Nkalaha community were also attacked.

The suspected herders had invaded the community, killing many people and burning houses but the recent reports indicated that more dead bodies were recovered in the bush while some natives were still missing.

Governor Francis Nwifuru had visited the community where he gave a 24-hour ultimatum to security agencies to fish out the suspected killers.
