  • Ebonyi council elections commences with prompt arrival of materials

Reports from different parts of Ebonyi indicated that electoral materials for the Local Government Council elections in the state have arrived in most polling booths and units across the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the sensitive and non-sensitive materials and the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) ad-hoc Electoral officials arrived in most centres within the capital city as early as 8am.

Officials of the EBSIEC said that areas not yet having these materials would soon be supplied after clearing some logistic problems.

At Ishiagu community in Ivo local government area, officials and voting materials arrived polling units including Girls Secondary School, Akparata, Ajali, Ugwueziafor as early as 8am while accreditation of voters began at 9am in most units.

In Ezza North and South local government areas some polling unit has yet to receive electoral materials as at time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, massive presence of uniformed security men were noticed in Abakaliki and other parts of the state as voting begins.

The Police, Army, the Civil Defence Corps were seen patrolling the state capital to maintain law and order during the exercise.

The Ebonyi Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Jude Madu, assured the electorate of adequate security during and after the elections.

“We assure the general public of readiness of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies to provide adequate security in all parts of the state during and after the voting exercise.

“We advise the voting public to maintain decorum at the polling centres and ensure that they vote for candidates of their choice.

“Nobody should be intimidated by the massive presence of Police and other security personnel in Abakaliki and other parts of the state,” Madu said.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Uchenna Orji, who is an indigene of Ishiagu, commended EBSIEC for the conduct of the election.

Orji who spoke to NAN in a telephone interview described the turnout of voters as encouraging.

“I commend EBSIEC for conducting the finest local government area election ever and I want to use the opportunity to advise the electorate to freely exercise their franchise without any molestation or intimidation,” Orji said.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Mrs Euphemia Nwali, noted that despite the late arrival of materials in some units, the situation was under control.

The commissioner expressed optimism that the PDP would win the election as it had no rival in the state.

  • Court summons Oyegun, Buni over Ebonyi APC crisis

Court summons Oyegun, Buni over Ebonyi APC crisis

There was a new twist to the crisis rocking the Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the National Chairman of the party and National Secretary, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Hon. Mai Mala Buni, have been summoned before Justice A.

A Nwaigwe’ s High Court sitting in Abakaliki. The two leaders of the party are to appear in person to answer questions why they should not be committed to prison for disobeying an order of interlocutory injunction restraining them, their agents and privies from conducting any new congress aimed at electing new executives of the party in the state.

The Nation gathered that the crisis escalated when the national chairman was said to have transmitted a letter to the state deputy Chairman, Eze Nwachukwu to act as the state chairman of the party. While Nwachukwu claimed that Nwobasi was suspended, the state chairman of the party on his part insisted that he still remained the authentic chairman of the party, describing his deputy as an “impostor”.

Justice Nwaigwe had on November 6, 2014 restrained the respondent from appointing caretaker committee in place of the executives elected during the ward, Local government and state congresses conducted in the state on November 11, 16 and 29 respectively pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The counsel to the applicants, Godwin Onwusi noted that the APC National chairman and National Secretary had earlier been served Form 48, which is the notice of consequence of disobedience to court order that may commit the duo to prison if found guilty.

Onwusi, while briefing journalists in Abakaliki noted that he applied to the Court for Order of committal to prison (Form 49) for the respondents to appear before the court and explain why they should not be sentence to prison for contempt. In the Form 49, he said: “Take notice that pursuant to section 72; order 1X, Rule 13(1) and (2) of the Sheriffs and Civil Processes ACT, CAP S6 LFN updated to 2010 and Order 42 Rule 9 (3)(C) of the rules of this honourable court, the counsel, on behalf of the applicants, will on the 4th day of May 2017 at the hour of 9 o’clock in the forenoon or soon thereafter, as the business of the court will permit, apply to this court for an order of committal to prison of the 1st respondent/ contemnor and the party sought to be committed as agent/privy of the 2nd respondent/ contemnor for having disobeyed the order of this court made on the 6th day of November, 2014”. “That while the substantive suit was and is still pending in court, the party sought to be committed as agents/privy signed and issued a letter dated 23rd February, 2017 to one Pastor Nwachukwu Eze appointing him the Acting Chairman of the APC, Ebonyi State, notwithstanding that the order restrained both the respondents and their agents/privies from doing so”, Onwusi added.

  • Young inventors urge FG to commercialise students’ inventions

Mr Ihere-serg Mascot, an old student of Apostles College, Ebonyi state, has called on the Federal Government to look inward and commercialise inventions made by students to promote the country’s technological advancement. Mascot, who built solar powered vehicle, made this appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on
Wednesday. He said the inventions were viable and could generate employment for the masses only if government and private investors would key into the efforts of the young inventors.

“This solar powered vehicle can serve four people at a time just like Keke Napep. The good thing about it is that it does not use petrol. Just park the car under the sun and it is activated to serve you. “Government’s assistance will make the car look better, and then you will find that even more students will be encouraged to be more creative and productive. “Nigerian youths can be manufacturers of cars if our government have faith in us and invest in the things we build; our teachers are some of the best in the world. They only need facilities to be on ground.’’

He appealed to the Federal Government to encourage youths by funding the commercialisation of more of their inventions.

Emeka Ugwueze, another young inventor, invented a dual purpose waste management biodegradable machine. Its waste recycling fuel can also mould interlocking blocks. Nelson, an old student of the Community Secondary School, Umuokpu Awka, Anambra, said the science projects they were involved in school had helped him. “The name I gave my invention is Change. The project took me about six months to put together, and it is a project that is environment-friendly.

“With the machine, plastic waste products in the environment can be converted to a better use; it is a machine that turns waste to wealth. “It can be used to convert pure water sachets that litter the environment into
bio-fuel that can be used to run our generators. “Also, it can be used to manufacture environment-friendly interlocking blocks that do not only beautify the environment, but also absolves plastic waste in our surroundings.’’ Ugwueze said he was able to produce the machine by collecting things in the environment that everyone thought were waste products and converted them to useful products.  He called on the government to invest in the invention in order to promote
creativity and self-reliance among youths to bring about wealth creation. “If we can produce such a machine with the encouragement and input of our teachers and parents, we can do greater things if government would put money and the resources available to it. “I appeal to the government to help me add value to this machine by making resources available, so that it can be more refined and available to people’’, Ugwueze said.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, said recently that the Federal Government was determined to encourage the application of technology as a veritable tool for national development.

“We need to strengthen the acquisition and application of technology as an important instrument for national development.

“Indeed, we need to place greater emphasis on science, engineering, technology and innovation,
to enable us achieve self-reliance, national pride and global recognition’’, Onu said.

The youths, therefore, called on the government to put words into action so that their potentials
would be harnessed toward the achievement of a socio-economic development of the country.

  • Monitors say FG’s school feeding programme in Ebonyi in danger

Monitors say FG’s school feeding programme in Ebonyi in danger

The Ebonyi Commissioner for Education, Prof. John Eke, says the Federal Government’s Home-Grown School Feeding Programme in the state has been “a massive success” contrary to the view of monitors of the programme, who warned that the programme is being derailed and will collapse.

Eke, who is also the chairman of state implementation committee of the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abakaliki that the initial challenges encountered by the cooks in the programme have been overcome.

According to him, the cooks were initially unable to access their money deposited in Heritage Bank which he said had only one branch in the state.

The professor said the state government’s intervention made Federal Government to use First Bank which eased the problem of cooks accessing fund deposited in the bank for the programme because the bank has many branches.

He said that government and its agents have no direct access to the fund meant for the programme.

Eke, however said the N70.00 allotted for the meal of each pupil is not enough to provide a pupil a balanced meal because an egg cost N40.00 in view of the rising costs of food items in the market.

But, some concerned citizens monitoring the implementation of the Federal Government’s initiative have decried the way and manner in which the programme is being run in the state.

They spoke in separate interviews emphasising the need for the operators of the programme to follow the guidelines as stipulated by the Federal Government.

They noted that primary school pupils were not being served quality food for the five school days as stipulated by the FG’s guidelines.

NAN recalls that Ebonyi was one of the five states that received N400 million for the continuation of its Home-Grown School Feeding Programme in January, 2017.

Under the free Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, an estimated 5.5 million pupils in the five states including Ebonyi would be fed for 200 school days and  N93.1billion has  been appropriated for the feeding scheme in the 2016 budget.

Mr Jerome Nwoba,   a concerned citizen keen at monitoring the programme, told NAN that government’s intention was being thwarted due to the manner the programme was executed in the state.

According to him, primary school pupils were fed with less than N30 for a meal as against N70 approved by FG.

He said that the vendors claimed that they were only managing with little resources made available to them by their handlers.

“The programme is a total failure in Ebonyi and an urgent review of the programme is needed including investigation into how money is being released to fund the programme in the state; this is necessary to salvage the appalling situation.

“Vendors are provided with about N20, 500 to feed 43 pupils for five days in some schools while the amount is less in some other schools.

“If you breakdown the amount, it’s less than N30 a day per a meal while FG provided N70 for a meal per a day.

“I guess some persons are somewhere allegedly sabotaging the efforts of the Federal Government and an urgent probe will unmask the elements undermining the programme.

“In all the three primary schools visited in Izzi Local Government Area including Achara Unuhu, Akpurata and Amanato community primary schools, the story is the same,” Nwoba said.

He said that the food vendors were threatening to quit the programme unless the FG intervened and addressed the noticeable lapses.

Another concerned citizen, Mr Ikechukwu Ogbonna, said he monitored the implementation of the programme in three schools and interacted with cooks in the different schools.

He said that the cooks complained of underfunding, making it impossible to serve the pupils with decent meals.

He further claimed that the affected cooks have threatened to quit the programme unless there was proper funding of the programme.

“In Adangene community primary school, Effium in Ohaukwu Local Government Area with 115 pupils only N21, 000 was released to feed them for five days.

“In Akpe-Amanachi community primary school in Abakaliki Local Government Area, the story is not different; N6, 000 was released to feed a school population of 134 pupils for five days, and no feeding has taken place for two weeks now in the school.

“In Amandim community primary school in Mgbom, Ugwulangwu, Ohaozara with 85 pupils, N21, 000 was released to feed the pupils for five days.

“In most cases, pupils are served food on their palms and in a most unhygienic manner,” Ogbonna said.

Mrs Queen-Juliet Ijezie said only one out of five schools she monitored in Izzi local government area fed the pupils once since the school feeding programme began in the state.

  • 2019: Ebonyi will vote according to conscience, says Umahi

2019: Ebonyi will vote according to conscience, says Umahi

•Bans carbonated drinks at govt functions

Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi has said the state will not vote along party lines in 2019 but vote for a presidential candidate who will help develop the state, irrespective of political affiliation.
The state will not play politics of sentiments in the 2019 presidential election, he added.
Umahi spoke at the Government House in Abakaliki when he met with traditional rulers and town union presidents.
He said: “When it comes to presidency, we no dey do party. It is the man who will help develop this state that we will support. But for governorship, national and state assemblies don’t go there; nobody will touch it. For presidency, we will negotiate; we will like the person to discuss with our traditional rulers as stakeholders.”
Umahi called on the monarchs to mobilise people for Saturday’s local government and councillorship elections, noting that the state was targeting one million voters.
“As traditional rulers, we cannot tell you who to vote for, but you have the responsibility to knack the gong and make it compulsory that nobody goes to the market or farm that day.
“You have to knack the gong; you have the powers and authority to do that. In the north, it is the traditional rulers who determine the course of politics and I will give you people that role. So, don’t shy away from politics for the peace of Ebonyi State.
“On Friday, there will be a public holiday so that people can come out enmass to vote on Saturday. I want the country to know that Ebonyi can give one million vote,” Umahi said.
Chairman of the Traditional Rulers Council Eze Charles Mkpuma hailed Umahi for his achievements, saying he had been adopted as their sole candidate for the 2019 governorship election.
Apparently worried about reports alleging that carbonated drinks are dangerous to health, Umahi has banned the serving and consumption of Coca Cola, Sprite and Fanta at government functions.
At the meeting yesterday, Umahi ordered the ushers to remove the bottles of Coke, Sprite and Fanta from the hall.
“I don’t want these brands of drinks to be served in any government function again,” he warned.
A Lagos State High Court, in a suit between Fijabi Adebo Holdings Limited and Emmanuel Fijabi Adebo, against the Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), alleged that Fanta Orange and Sprite may be hazardous if consumed with Vitamin C.

  • Police urges Abakaliki to prohibit use of pond

Police urges Abakaliki to prohibit use of pond

The Police Command in Ebonyi has urged the state government to prohibit the use of the pond at the International Market, Abakaliki it said endangered children’s lives in recent times.

Dsp Jude Madu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command gave the advice on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki.

Madu was reacting to the recent drowning of Master Chinonso Nwokporo, a Senior Secondary School (SS1) student of Abakaliki High School inside the pond located at the Market.

“This is the third reported case of drowning inside the pond which claimed the lives of all victims; the best option is the permanent closure of the pond to public.

“The government, in the interim, can provide safety measures such as safety items and materials at the pond and similar measures at every stream, river, pond, lakes and other water sources in the state,” he further urged.

The PPRO also urged parents to monitor their children’s movement and watch  the type of friends they keep to ensure their safety.

“Individuals living around the pond are mostly concerned with this advice as the command assures the public of the continued protection of their lives and property”.

NAN reports that Nwokporo’s corpse was found floating on the pond last week with blood gushing from mouth, ears and nose.

An eyewitness and friend of the deceased, Master Okechukwu Eze, told NAN that he and the deceased had gone to the pond to swim, as was the practice by the children within the vicinity.

“We went to the pond to swim, though none of us know how to swim, this made us to stay at the shallow part of the pond that people normally fetch water.

“Immediately we reached the pond, he plunged into it and later started shouting for help as I tried unsuccessfully to rescue him.

“I absent-mindedly jumped into the pond and started drowning but miraculously came out from it with the shouts of Jesus,  but no help came for my friend,” he said.

He noted that a security man stationed at the market heard his shout but said he did not know how to swim, but rushed to Nwokporo’s house to inform his mother.

Contributing, Mr Ephraim Ononye, the Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also advised the state government to prevent further drowning in the pond through the provision of various security measures.

  • Umahi reconciles with estranged major political ally

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi on Sunday evening reconciled with his estranged major political ally in the state, Chief Julius Amah-Orji, popularly known as ‘Ochiliozuo’ (He who caters for the people en masse).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the relationship between the duo cracked when Umahi appointed Amah-Oji’s main political foe in Afikpo South Local Government Area, Chief Eni Uduma, as the Caretaker chairman of the council.

The final nail was driven into the coffin when the governor ensured that Uduma emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the council for the forthcoming council polls in the state, a situation that infuriated Amah-Orji.

The reconciliation was made when Umahi led members of the State Executive Council, state Elders Council and members of the House of Assembly, among other political stakeholders, to an Easter visit on Amah-Orji at his country home in Nguzu-Edda community.

According to the governor, the visit was to bring reconciliation among diverse political interests in the area and ensure that no individual in his political group ‘abandons the ship’.

“Many people across the state, expressed misgivings over the outcome of our LGA elections primaries but one thing I agree with the elders council, is that no one who fought the battle with us will be left behind.

“Amah-Orji has a right to be angry if he has reason to do so and we are here because he is very important to our winning elections no matter what people say.

“Humility which is very important in a man’s life brought us here as people can give any type of interpretation to this visit but am not shamed to preach the gospel of love,” he said.

Umahi described Amah-Orji as a consummate politician and leader with a good heart, noting that he worked assiduously to ensure his election as the governor in 2015.

“He gave us rooms in his several hotels in Lagos free of charge during our struggle to be elected among other immeasurable assistance as we are blessed in Ebonyi, to say sorry whenever we err.

“Our visit here should unite the people of Afikpo South LGA because the state is too small to be fragmented or fractured.

“I earnestly appeal to Amah-Orji and other political stakeholders of the council to embrace peace and love not because of elections but because they are the greatest gifts of God to man,” he said.

He thanked all those who accompanied him on the visit, noting that shelving their Easter celebrations was remarkable and a sacrifice for the desired unity in the state.

“When the names of two traditional rulers in the council: HRH Ugwuocha Obasi and Dickson Okorie were submitted to me for recognition, I stepped them down, insisting that Amah-Orji should be the one to submit them.

“He has done so presently and I direct the traditional rulers to come to my office on Wednesday and collect their staff of offices,” he said.

Chief Franklin Ogbuewu, former Minister of Culture and Tourism and Chairman of the state Elders Council, commended the governor for his humility and noted that the visit has achieved its desired goal.

Ogbuewu, who was also Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Greece, noted that he counseled Amah-Orji and the governor separately and in their profound wisdom, heeded to his counsels.

“The governor noted that to prove that he has accepted what I told him, he will pay Amah-Orji an Easter visit which he did today to prove that we are still a united family,” he said.

Responding, Amah-Orji welcomed the governor to the area and conveyed his peoples’ warm felicitations towards his visit.

NAN reports that the governor finally performed the symbolic handing over of Uduma into Amah-Orji’s care, signifying reconciliation and harmonious relationship between the duo.

Sources close to Amah-Orji told NAN that in his displeasure over Uduma’s emergence, he resigned his appointments as member of the Ebonyi State University Governing board and the state elders council.

  • New Ebonyi NLC leadership assures workers of purposeful leadership

The new leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ebonyi has assured workers that the union would protect their interest and insist on enhancement of workers’ welfare.

The Acting Chairman, Mr Leo Nkah, spoke on Thursday in Abakaliki at a pre-May Day Rally, with the theme: : ‘Repositioning NLC for enhanced workers’ benefit.’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that Nkah became the acting chairman following the removal of Mr Ikechukwu Nwafor, who was accused of abuse of office and financial related offences.

Nkah said that the purpose of the rally was to interact directly with the members since the inception of his administration.

He also said that the event was mainly to interface with workers and intimate them on what to expect from the new NLC leadership.

“Since the change of leadership in NLC, all that people have been hearing are through third party medium.

“We decided to use the rally to interface with workers, talk with them and give them hope on what we can achieve from the state government, that has not been possible before now,” Nkah noted.

Nkah assured workers of rapid response and implementation of their welfare shortly after Easter celebration.

Gov. David Umahi, on his part urged workers to exercise patience as his administration was committed to enhancing their welfare.

Umahi, represented by Mrs Grace Chukwu, Senior Special Assistant on Labour Matters, promise to review workers’ needs such as salaries, leave allowances and promotions.

“We will review workers’ salaries, leave allowance and promotion; government requires workers’ patience, ” he noted.
Members of the affiliate unions of NLC participated in the rally.

Some of the members carried placards with inscription affirming the support to the new NLC leadership.

Some of the placards read: “ Nkah is our hero,’’ “No more exploitation of workers,’’ Thank God we are out of Egypt,’’ among others.

NAN further recalls that Nwafor was removed after a State Council Meeting of the NLC.

A communiqué issued after the meeting accused Nwafor of failure to account for all monthly stipend and subventions received on behalf of the congress from the state government and other sources on money.

  • Professor, five others die in road crash

The Dean, School of Basic Medical Sciences at the Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ebonyi, Prof. Robert Nneli is dead.

He died in one of the two accidents recorded Thursday night at the notorious 131 junction of the Abakaliki-Enugu federal highway.

Nneli, 69 years old, joined the University in 2012 after spending close to 20 years at Abia State University.

He was educated at St. Patrick’s Secondary School Emene in Enugu and the University of Calabar.

Mrs Stella Uchendu, Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi confirmed the two accidents in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

She said both accidents occurred between 9 and 11pm.

According to her, it was raining heavily when the accidents occurred and attributed to possible reckless driving, over-speeding and poor visibility.

“In the first accident, the articulated vehicle’s driver blinded with his headlight the driver of the white-coloured Toyota Camry vehicle which made him lose control as he was on top speed.

“The vehicle then veered off its lane and collided with the on-coming articulated vehicle. The car was crushed by the truck.

“The professor died in the accident as his son and another occupant sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

According to Uchendu, the second accident involved an SUV with five occupants which also crashed into stationary articulated vehicle due to over speeding and poor visibility.

“When we concluded our evacuation, the police men on duty told us that they would tow the articulated vehicle off the road but they never did.

“The SUV apparently crashed into the articulated vehicle as all its five occupants died and their corpses evacuated to the Federal Teaching hospital Abakaliki,” she said.

She commended her officers for their prompt response to the crashes and urged motorists to always obey traffic regulations.

“Motorists should ensure that when they are confronted with headlights from oncoming vehicles, they should reduce their speed and and keep to their right side.

“Motorists should also avoid night travels, driving under the rain and ensure they obey road regulations to save lives,”

A witness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the drivers of the Camry and the SUV were to blame for driving recklessly under the rain.

“The FRSC should increase its enlightenment of motorists especially on night journeys and driving under the rain, in order to check the incessant loss of lives on the road.

DSP Jude Madu, the Ebonyi Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRP) absolved his men of any complicity by failing to tow the articulated vehicle.

He blamed the FRSC for failing in its duty.

“No police officer would reject an offer of assistance to tow vehicles off the road, in order to save lives as my officers stayed on the road till day break to enforce law and order.

“They even signaled to approaching cars to divert to the other lane of the road but most drivers including that of the SUV, failed to heed to the diversion signals,” he said.

  • JAMB: Candidates complain of stressful registration process

JAMB: Candidates complain of stressful registration process

Some prospective candidates for the 2017 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) say they are facing poor internet network, stressful and cumbersome process in registering for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Ebonyi, Abia and Imo.

Correspondents News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored the situation in these three states, report that there are long queues at the banks and registration centres, including JAMB Offices.

In Abakiliki, the prospective candidates suggested inclusion of more banks in the sale of JAMB forms.

They told NAN in Abakaliki on Tuesday that using only two banks – Union Bank and Unity Bank – to sell forms to thousands of prospective candidates was frustrating.

The candidates claimed that some of them had spent many days without obtaining the form, even as some who don’t have relatives, had to come to the state capital every day in an attempt to buy the form.

They expressed fears that many prospective candidates might not purchase the forms within the specified time frame, unless urgent steps was taken to remedy the situation.

Messrs Victor Nkpuma, Richard Okafor, Philip Onwe and Miss Eunice Oko, told NAN that the two banks were inadequate for Ebonyi and called for inclusion of more banks, to ease the process.

“The idea of using only Union Bank and Unity Bank for the sale of the form to me is not the best for the state because the two banks can hardly serve the purpose adequately.

“There was almost a stampede in Unity bank the other day because the crowd was so much and the bank’s security personnel could not control the crowd because everybody wanted to get the form at the same time.

“There should be an inclusion of more banks to ease the frustration and pain that those coming to obtain the form are made to go through and again many people may not be able to get the form within the time frame, Nkpuma said.

Okafor decried the current registration procedures, and described it as more tedious, complex, time and money consuming.

According to him, candidates are first expected to go to JAMB office and fill a profile form that would contain his or her e-mail address linked to the JAMB website.

The candidates after filling the profile, would go to a designated bank with the form issued to them at the JAMB office and buy the entrance form at the cost of N5,5000.

According to him, candidates are still required to pay additional N700 to collect JAMB brochure and a novel at designated banks.

“The procedure is frustrating, cumbersome, time and money consuming and I am afraid that many intending candidates may miss, if the board doesn’t relax the tedious process.

“Again having only two banks to serve the whole of Ebonyi in the sale of the form is an unthinkable action because many will definitely miss out,” Okafor said.

Meanwhile, Onwe and Oko have urged the board to reduce the fee payable by prospective candidates, to make it possible for indigent candidates to obtain the form.

They also urged JAMB to give more banks permission to sell the forms to candidates.

“The procedure adopted by JAMB in the 2017 sale of the UTME form is frustrating, time and money consuming unlike in the previous method where a candidate goes to a cyber cafe and do the online registration.

“The former procedure was simple, easy, less stressful, less time and money consuming,” they said.

In Owerri, the candidates told NAN that the problem of invalid Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) had contributed to delays in the registration process.

A candidate, Johnson Nnadozie, said he paid at Sterling bank and received a PIN, which he had been unable to use since, adding that he had gone back to the bank severally and was told to keep retrying with the same PIN.

Nnadozie added that the crowds at the banks also made it difficult for the bank staff to resolve the issues satisfactorily.

Another candidate, Chinenye Anyanwu, said she paid, had yet to receive her PIN, while Chidi Iwueze, said the email address he used in creating his profile and which he used to receive his confirmation code, had suddenly become inavalid.

He added that the Computer-Based Test centre he went for the registration, either had network problems or the username or password was incorrect.

In Umuahia, the candidates complained of poor internet access and extra charges at the cyber cafe.

Some applicants said that besides the N5,500 registration fees, they were made to pay extra charges of N300 and N200 for opening of JAMB profile and e-mail addresses.

Victor Nwafor and Christie Nworgu, said that the process was compounded by poor internet access which, according to them, delayed the process of creating the JAMB profile.

They said that it took them two days to get the JAMB profile from a designated JAMB registration centre, due to poor network.

A computer operator at a cyber cafe in Umuahia, who identified herself simply as Gift, said that the centre collected additional charges for creating JAMB profile and e-mail for applicants who had no personal email.

“There are some applicants who use their cellphones to create the JAMB profile, using their e-mail. Such people pay the JAMB registration fee of N2,500 only,” Gift said.

She denied the allegation in some quarters that registration centres were using the opportunity to exploit unsuspecting applicants.

Gift said that the management of the centre had made complaints to JAMB concerning the difficulties being experienced in creating profile.

She said that the examination body had given an assurance that the issues would be over soon.

At Apunmiri in Umuahia South Local Government Area, an operator at a designated registration centre, Mrs Chinaza Ozodinmbu, confirmed that the difficulties encountered in creating profiles slowed down the registration process.
