  • Two die, several injured in Ebonyi auto crash

Two persons have died while several were hospitalized in a head on collision between a Ford transit bus and a Volkswagen Passat wagon along the Abakaliki-Enugu expressway.

It was gathered that the Ford transit car with registration number, XX 225 ENU was conveying passengers from Effium in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State to Abakaliki, the state capital when it collided with the Volkswagen with registration number AKL 520 KC.

The bus it was learnt was carrying about 23 passengers while the wagon had 3 passengers when the accident occurred near the permanent site campus of Ebonyi State University.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ebonyi State Command who spoke to our reporter in confidence, said that 2 of the passengers, a male and another female, died at the spot while several occupants of the commercial vehicle were also seriously injured in the accident.

He said that the accident occurred as a result of over speeding and dangerous over-taking adding that because of the over speeding of the driver, he could not control the vehicle and had a head-on collision with the coming vehicle.

The source said: “the Ford transit vehicle was carrying passengers numbering over 23. The passengers were heading to Abakaliki the Ebonyi State capital from Effuim. The driver was on a very high speed and just at the Permanent site of the Ebonyi State University gate, the Volk-Wagen Passat driver in an attempt to over take another vehicle had a head on collission with the Ford car”.

“By the time our men got to the scene of the accident, we observed that two of the occupants, a female and a male died at the spot while several others including children sustained various degrees of injuries. From our findings, the passengers were returning to Abakaliki after the weekend.”

He further stated that the corpse of the deceased was immediately deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki mortuary while those who sustained injuries were also rushed to the same hospital for urgent medical attention.

According to him: “25 persons were injured, 8 male, 10 female and 7 children. Immediately we got the information of the crash in the late hours of yesterday, we immediately sent our men to the scene.

“Immediately they got there, they were able to assist in ensuring that those who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital and control the traffic in the area as most vehicles had to stop to assist the victims

“We had to make urgent arrangement to assist in helping those who sustained injuries to a nearby hospital as most of them were either bleeding or were unconscious. One of the passangers, a woman had one of her leg cut and after rushing the woman to the hospital, we had to come back to the scene to pick the leg and take it to the hospital. We have always advised motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and over speeding.”

WHY did you go into music?

Music has been part of me. I did not just start singing yesterday but right from when I was a child. I went into music for the strong passion I have for it.

Can you give an insight of your life as a recording artiste?

I have three singles to my credit titled Fly High, Gbakodoro and Fall in Love, which is everywhere today. I have travelled a lot because of music and have performed at

‘A” list events along with top-rated Nigerian entertainers.

Where did inspiration for Fall in Love come from?

First and foremost, inspiration comes from above and not from man but from the Living God. Music is all about what happened to you or your environment. Fall in Love is one of my best songs, for me, and it took me a long time to write and to record it.

Why do people fail in music?

Music requires passion and focus. Some people went into music because they wanted to make what people call sharp cash and by the time the money did not come they dropped. Although I have not failed and I will never fail. I will continue to do what I know how to do best till when my God answers my prayer. I did not rush in and I will not rush out by his grace and because my love for my career is intact and I know my God will perfect me. And I am there already and I am not in a hurry.

What do you like about being a musician?

Happiness, peace and joy. Meeting different kinds of people from different countries who tell you how they feel about your job.

Tell us about your new video

My video opened a new chapter in my career. I have a great video shot recently by a US-born Nigerian who is also a great director and a popular singer over there. He is known as Obiechina. I know it’s not easy to achieve a good video in Nigeria without spending much as an artiste who is independent. I am very happy and I know that more good videos are on the way. I say thanks to God, my big brothers, my director Obiechina, and other good-minded people that contributed to the success of this wonderful video.

    Who are your role models?

God first, the late Michael Jackson, Tuface, Psquare, Dbanj and Akon.

What should your fans be expecting from you?

Good music, beautiful things, more good jobs and I promise not to let them down.

I love all my fans so much that I cannot do without them and I say God bless them all.

  • CHAN Eagles’ largesse: Ebonyi fans hail Jonathan

CHAN Eagles’ largesse: Ebonyi fans hail Jonathan

Football fans in Ebonyi have hailed the historic presidential reward for the bronze medal-winning Super Eagles at the recent African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday hosted the team in Abuja. He gave N1 million to each of the players and assistant coaches, while the Head Coach, Stephen Keshi got 1.5 million.

Some of the fans commended the president for the gesture in separate interviews with NAN on Friday in Abakaliki and noted that it would help to reposition sports in the country.

Macson Uche, a sports historian, said this was the first time in the annals of the nation’s football that a bronze medal-winning team would receive financial reward from the government.

“The Super Eagles team who won bronze at AFCON in 1992, 2002 and 2006 did not receive cash rewards. The 2004 team received a ‘Presidential Handshake’ from former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The above listed teams may have been rewarded by individuals and corporate organisations but this is the first time the team will receive as much as N1 million each,” he said.

In the same vein, Obinna Ogba, a former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Vice-Chairman, described President Jonathan as the best ‘sporting president’ in the nation’s history.

“This is the only president that rewards athletes whether they win medals or not. This motivates them to represent the country creditably in competitions. Football stakeholders in the country should reciprocate this gesture by maintaining the prevailing peace in sports administration for improved performances by our teams,” he said.

Justin Mmegwa, a footballer, called on the country’s teams to always exhibit the “Never Say Die’’ attitude they are known for.

“The President was particularly impressed by the CHAN Eagles’ come-back from a 0-3 deficit in the quarter-final against Morocco to eventually win 4-3. I am sure that the feat propelled him to reward the team as he uses it to preach on national resilience and integration during public speeches,” he said.

Christopher Agbii, a businessman, called on the president to extend such gesture to athletes who participate in other sports and not only football.

“Equal treatment to all athletes will correct the impression that football is the only recognised sport in the country and will serve as a source of motivation for the athletes,” he said.

Jacinta Ukah, a youth activist, called on the president to personally intervene in the nagging issue of hiring a foreign assistant for Keshi as the team prepares for the World Cup.

“The NFF leadership has debunked the issue but such at this critical period of World Cup preparations will constitute undue distraction for the coaches,” she said.

  • Ebonyi PDP: Battle of the blocs

Ebonyi PDP: Battle of the blocs

As preparations for 2015 governorship race in Ebonyi State picks up, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, reports that the search for flag bearers is anchored on the battle of the blocs.

As 2015 hopefuls for Ebonyi State’s governorship seat put finishing touches to their preparations, it seems the intrigues are now primarily narrowed to the issue of the bloc that should produce the next governor.

The state is divided into three parts with the Abakaliki bloc having two parts and Afikpo bloc having only one. Abakaliki bloc is made up of Ezza Ezekuna nation, Izzi Nnodo, Ikwo Nnoyo and Ngboejiogu, among others.

So, the struggle is primarily between the north and the southern part of Ebonyi State.

In fact, the bloc struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as it concerns Governor Martin Elechi’s successor, is not entirely new. It dates back to the very day he became the governor.

Soon after he was elected the second governor of the state, Elechi, at the Women Development Centre, (WDC), Abakaliki, announced that he would hand over power to the people of the South, which comprises Afikpo,Ohaozara and other clans that make up the state

Ironically, that announcement, instead of easing political tension, triggered off the bloc struggle in the state, as desperate politicians in the state, especially within Elechi’s cabinet, started bickering.

The Nation’s investigation shows that the bickering became even more audible among hugely empowered aides of Governor Elechi from Abakaliki area and among his in-laws, the Izzi Nnodo people.

So, a source who spoke to us during the week said the most potent challenges any of the aspirants must tackle include “the deep-rooted grudge by the southern bloc vis-a-vis the claims by the Abakaliki bloc.”

We gathered that this is even more so in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where Elechi has openly pledged to abide by the party’s rotational policy and allow the southern senatorial zone to produce the party’s candidate.

A top government official in the state, who confirmed the governor’s insistence on giving the ticket to the south, said, “The governor and the party are concerned with equity. Although the PDP is not the only party in the race, we are being guided by the constitution of the party. Check Article 12 of our constitution and you will find out that the rotation of power is enshrined and embedded there. Besides the position of the law, we are convinced that the good people of Ebonyi State have conscience, that is why I think we will succeed in appealing to the consciences of the people to insist on equitable distribution and evolution of power. If this is done, power will rotate across the three senatorial zones in the state at the right time.

“As you are aware, the North and the Central zones have taken their turns, remaining the South. So, our leader, the governor, and the PDP are saying that equity demands that power moves to the South,” the source said.

Such position is based on the argument that since the creation of Ebonyi State in 1996 by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, the Southern senatorial zone is yet to produce an elected governor.

So, aspirants and political lords from the area are insisting that no other factor must determine Elechi’s successor than the rotation policy which favours the south and today their claim has received added boost in public support given by the outgoing governor.

But even if the governor is to ensure the zone gets the PDP ticket, it will not be the end of the political battle.

This is because the current political development in the state, especially the growing influence of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), and the political rivalry among the governor’s henchmen have made other factors to become so critical that no one seems certain again who would get PDP ticket for 2015 election. Such factors include but not limited to:

    The Izza’s majority factor:

The Izza  has large population that spreads across the entire 13 local government areas. In the last general election, their population advantage manifested clearly. Today, aspirants from that bloc are threatening to take advantage of their population once again, arguing that the south has always participated in all elections and so maintaining that the argument of zoning should be discountenanced since it has never been strictly implemented in Ebonyi politics.

Among political heavyweights (both progressives and the PDP) from Ezze Ezekuna clan include Senator Julius Ucha and Senator Paulinus Igwe Nwagu. It is said the clan has strong politicians and influential elements who can stand and make use of the numerical strength of Ezza nation to win votes for any candidate of their choice.

    The Izzi challenge:

Although the Izzi clan do not have the population advantage of the Izza, insiders said they have become a major and powerful bloc “because the Elechi’s administration has empowered many of their politicians, who are now powerful enough to make serious impact in the election campaign process. Governor Elechi is a son-in-law of the Izzi clan and there are allegations that his in-laws, who benefitted tremendously from his government, may be gearing up to take the seat in 2015, notwithstanding Elechi’s handover plans and his talk about equity.

Influential politicians from Izzi, according to a source, include Senator Chris Nwankwo, representing Ebonyi North, Edwin Nkwagu (EDON), Dr. Sunday Nwangele, Commissioner for Health in Elechi’s administration.

    Power struggle among Elechi’s henchmen

Aside bloc battles, another major complication in the preparation for Elechi’s successor, especially in the PDP, is the power struggle among Elechi’s henchmen.

An insider said many of Elechi’s aides and associates are angry because of the speculation that Elechi’s hidden game plan is to install as his successor, his brother-in-law, Senator Chris Nwankwo, who is the current Senator representing Ebonyi North. The allegation is that if this plot works out, former state governor, Chief Sam Egwu, will take Nwankwo’s senatorial seat. Though Elechi had denied this allegation on many occasions, the allegation has refused to die down.

So, most of the intrigues within the PDP ahead of 2015 are intricately associated to this alleged plot. For example, when the news of the plot to remove Dave Umahi as deputy governor broke, it was linked to this alleged secret plot. When Valentine Okike, an alleged loyalist of Umahi, was impeached as deputy speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, it was also traced to the same plot.

Explaining the political intrigues, an aide to a top aspirant for the PDP ticket, who is from the southern zone, lamented.“Everybody knows it is the turn of the south, but the battles against Chief Dave confirm that we are not all sincere. They are fighting Dave to divide and weaken the south because they know nobody from the zone can challenge him despite the fact that Afikpo people are saying if power must truly come and remain in the South, it must be given to them to appease the spirit of the late Akanu Ibiam,” the source said.

    The Anyim factor:

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, understandably weilds enormous influence in the politics of Ebonyi State. So, before the final concessions would be made, said our source, he, Elechi, Egwu and other power brokers in the PDP will have to agree.

So, for the ruling PDP in Ebonyi, the game is heating up by the day and their lot is not made simple by the obvious clout of the APC in the state today.

  • Ebonyi to spend $500m on EBSU

About $500 million would be spent on the development of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, the state Governor Chief Martins Elechi has said.

Elechi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Mr Ndubuisi Chibueze-Agbo, at an event where educational materials were distributed, said since the government decided to collapse its multi-campus system into one, it had already started massive infrastructural development of the permanent site at Ishieke in collaboration with an American firm.

The governor announced that the administrative block and the office of the vice chancellor would be inaugurated in the first quarter of this year, while work on two hostel blocks and another faculty block are in progress.

Meanwhile, lecturers of the Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, have suspended their one-week warning strike, which it started on Monday January 13.

Chairman Academic Staff Union of the college (COEASU), Mr Greg Esheye, said the strike was to highlight the grievances of the union against the state government.

The lecturers were protesting high taxes, failure of government to constitute the institution’s governing council, pay pension and gratuity to retired workers and raise their retirement age to 65.

According to him, the suspension is to give the government an opportunity to open up negotiations with the union.

“The union is committed to ensuring that the on-going industrial dispute is resolved amicably, that is why all the lecturers were back to deliver lectures.

“We are hopeful that with the suspension of the strike that government will act fast and open the channel of negotiation with leadership of the union to forestall an impending indefinite strike,” Esheye said.

Some students of the institution have called on the state government to start negotiations with the union to resolve all issues in the interest of industrial harmony.

  • Elechi: Nigeria too dependent on oil

Elechi: Nigeria too dependent on oil

Ebonyi State Governor Martin Elechi yesterday lamented that the country’s economy is “dry”.

He said over-dependence on oil, instead of diversifying to other areas, is responsible for this.

The governor, who spoke when signing into law the 2014 Appropriation Bill of N99, 840,505,540.00, urged the indigenes not to relent in the payment of taxes.

Elechi said the state would seek financial assistance from development partners in the United States of America (USA) and the Africa Development Bank (ADB), to fulfil its infrastructural obligation to the people.

Said he: “Our economy is dry. This is why we are asking for assistance in soft terms from USA and ADB to ensure the economic take off in Ebonyi. We must be prudent.

“We will be strict in the approval of meetings not to be left out of national schemes. We will be economical in attending meetings outside the state. We cannot be doing everything because other states are doing it.

“It is easier to pass a budget into law than to find the money to implement it. People should pay tax. Because we are blessed with oil wells, people tend to depend on them. The civil duty of tax payment should not be treated with levity. It gives us a sense of belonging.

“In the years ahead, we shall be more stringent to ensure that our objectives are achieved. We are trying to perform in the sub-sectors of the economy- education, agriculture, health, etc. You cannot say anyone has been neglected. These sub-units are attended to in the budget.”

Speaker of the House of Assembly Chukwuma Nwazunku noted that the 2014 budget was structured to ensure increase in the Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR).

He said the administration policies were targeted at ensuring speedy development of the sub-sectors.

Nwazunku enjoined politicians not to rupture the peace because of the forthcoming elections.

  • Ebonyi to spend $500m on varsity

Ebonyi to spend $500m on varsity

EBONYI State government has announced that a total of 500 million dollars would be spent on the development of the state university (EBSU), Abakaliki.

The state governor, Chief Martin Elechi made this known during the flag-off ceremony of the distribution of 2013 instructional materials, assessment report booklets and commissioning of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) warehouse at the SUBEB headquarters Abakaliki.

Elechi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Ndubuisi Chibueze-Agbo stated that since the decision of government to run a single campus system as against the four-campus structure for the state university, the government has already commenced massive infrastructural development of the permanent site at Ishieke, in collaboration with an American firm.

The governor announced that the administrative block and the office of the Vice Chancellor would be commissioned by the first quarter of the year while work on two hostel blocks and another faculty block was progressing rapidly.

He stated that the state government at inception of his administration in 2007 assured Ebonyi residents of qualitative education of the children, and stressed that a lot had been done in the realisation of that objective.

The state, he said, built 31 boarding schools and established three new technical colleges in the state.

Governor Elechi promised that the issue of accessing of funds from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Abuja would be addressed very soon by the payment of the state’s counterpart funds, saying that the state will not leave any fund un-accessed from UBEC.

In her opening remarks, the Acting Chairman of SUBEB, Mrs. Perpetua Elom stated that through the state government’s funding, in collaboration with UBEC and Education Trust Fund (ETF), Ebonyi SUBEB was able to construct 345 classroom blocks, renovation of 69 school blocks, procurement of 29,302 sets of school furniture, provision of 140,902 textbooks, procurement of library, computers and intro-tech equipment and training of 40,209 teachers, in addition to employment of 2000 tutorial and 200 non-tutorial staff.

Southeast Coordinator of UBEC, Mrs. Ngozi Ojukwu stated that Ebonyi was the first state in the country even ahead of the federal government to sign the UBEC Law, and to now flag-off distribution of instructional materials, but urged the state to sit up in terms of payment of her counterpart funds to UBEC in order to draw down her trapped funds.

Chairman of the State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon Chris Usulor while commending the state government and SUBEC in doing wonderful job in the education sector, promised to hold a meeting with the State Ministry of Education and SUBEB officials towards finding a way to resolve the payment of counterpart funds to UBEC.

  • Ebonyi College teachers embark on warning strike

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COESU), Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo chapter has embarked on seven days’ warning strike to press home its demand for the state government to revert the new tax regime imposed on members.

This followed numerous ultimatums by the union and the Joint Action Committee Trade Unions (JACTU) of the institution calling on the government to reduce the taxes.

Rising from its Congress which held at the college’s auditorium, the union alleged that last September, the college administration imposed a new tax regime of between 500 and 800 per cent increment on the workers based on a directive from the state government despite protests from organised labour in the state.

In a resolution signed by its Chairman, Comrade Esheya Greg, the union described the new system as obnoxious and outrageous. It said the strike is also in solidarity with the indefinite strike called by the national leadership of the union nationwide.

They wondered why the new tax regime will be imposed on them when they are not enjoying other financial benefits such as pensions and gratuity at the moment. They also maintained that no higher institution in the country has implemented such tax regime and wondered why theirs should be any different.

“In the absence of pension, gratuity and other benefits those in the state civil service and our counterparts in other colleges of education enjoy, our only succour which is the enhanced salary package, should not be taken away through heavy taxation,” they said.

They also wondered why the tax regime should come into place just few months after the state government started implementing the new salary structure.

They said: “The state government just approved and started implementing the 100 percent new salary structure for the college staff in November 2012, something the college should have been enjoying since 2010.

“For the government to start implementation of this harsh tax system few months after the implementation of the new salaries amount to giving with one hand and taking with the other.”

They urged the management of the college and the government to end the taxes and address other necessary issues for the betterment of workers and smooth running of the college.

These include: “Conditions of service for the staff college; Governing Council for the college; Pension and gratuity scheme for the staff since they are not casual staff; Entrenchment of the 65 years retirement age in the law establishing the institution and implement the same for all staff; Clear the two years outstanding leave allowance for staff and; Pay the arrears of the new salary structures to the workers of the college.

“These issues we are asking for have all been implemented in the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) and yet the government has not thought of implementing the harsh tax regime on the staff of the university. If the university staff that enjoy favourable working conditions do not pay tax, why should staff who have been denied so much be the ones to pay such obnoxious tax?” the union queried.
