Man razes self, family house after altercation with wife

A man in his early thirties,  Onyiuke Nwedeogu, allegedly set himself ablaze after a minor altercation with his wife.

The late Onyiuke also set the family house where his wife, Mrs Felicia Nwedeogu, and their three daughters lived on fire.

The tragic incident occurred at Ndiechi Igbeagu in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Sources in the community said the conflict began on Sunday morning when Onyiuke had a minor altercation with his wife during which he beat her up.

Afterward, he gathered all his clothes and placed them in their provision shop.

The eyewitness added that Onyiuke took the matter to his parents, who lived a few kilometres away but was dissatisfied with their attempts to mediate.

He was said to have rushed back to his residence, forcibly removed the window protector where his wife and three children were and set the building on fire with motor spirit, despite knowing the family was asleep in the early hours of the morning.

Another source revealed that after the altercation, the man took his belongings to their provision store, locked it and left, only to return at night with a gallon of motor spirit and set the house on fire.

The source added that Mrs Felicia Nwedeogu and three children were rescued through the same window husband had removed the protector after fire engulfed the entire building.

“The man, after setting the building on fire, drove away in his bus to a location where one Elijah rushed him to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FETHA), where he died on Wednesday,” he said.

The deceased’s body has been deposited at the AE-FETHA morgue.

It was learnt  the bereaved wife and children were rescued with only a wrapper and children’s pants.

Police spokesperson in Ebonyi state, Joshua Ukandu, said the command was yet to receive official report as of the time of filing this report.

Ebonyi raises the alarm over alleged collapse of uncompleted FG dam

Ebonyi State Government said that the uncompleted Mpu/Ishiagu dam project has led to death of many Ishiagu residents and rendered thousands homeless.

Commissioner for Water Resources Nkah raised the alarm that the situation may be worse next year.

According to him, a section of the uncompleted dam collapsed and will further aggravate the flooding of many communities in Ishiagu caused by the non-completion of the project.

The contract for the dam was awarded in 2014 by the Federal Government but the contractor abandoned the work at some stage.

Mpu, a community in Aninri local government area of Enugu State and Ishiagu in Ivo local government area of Ebonyi State, donated the lands for the dam.

It was attracted by former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who hails from Mpu to encourage biannual farming in the area.

However, it has remained uncompleted with no hope on sight for its completion and a section of it was said to have collapsed recently worsening the situation in the area.

Nkah, who also hails from Ishiagu, lamented many residents have died due to flooding caused by the dam.

He noted that the collapse of a section of the dam will worsen the situation in the area if nothing is done about it.

He urged the Federal Government to wade in and complete the project to save lives and communities in the area.

He said: “The dam is causing a very serious disaster. That dam is not completed. It is killing a a lot of people. It has taken over a lot of farm lands. Some families have been rendered homeless in Ishiagu, and probably in the other communities too. But I am sure that in Ishiagu, a lot of families have been rendered homeless.

“And when rain falls, nobody can pass there. I raised this issue with the National Emergency Agency and SEMA during the last program we had. It’s a very big disaster. And let me also use this opportunity to draw the attention of the federal government to complete that project.

“This is very, very important because the disaster is costing us so much. Now with a section of it falling, we expect more havoc next year.”

Two arrested for stripping teenage girls over alleged fowl theft

The Police in Ebonyi State have arrested two men for allegedly stripping two teenage girls and flogging them on allegation of theft.

The police vowed to prosecute the suspects to serve as a deterrent to others against taking the laws into their hands.

The teenage girls in a video, which has since gone viral, were stripped naked and made to undergo various dehumanizing treatments over allegation of stealing fowls.

They were flogged and forced to parade the community naked with the fowls they allegedly stole.

The incident happened in Ojiegbe, Ngbo community in Ohaukwu local government area of the state.

The incident,  it was gathered, happened in November 2023 but the video started circulating during the week.

Its circulation drew wide condemnation from the public who described the treatment metted out on the two girls as dehumanizing.

They called on security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute all those involved in the inhuman treatment of the teenage girls.

“Share it until it gets to the government authorities. These girls were subjected to inhuman treatment.  Criminal cases have legal punishment stipulated in the criminal code.

“Anyone caught in this situation should be handed over to the police, this treatment is too much for those small under age girls,” a resident said in the video.

On receipt of the complaints, the Police in Ebonyi swung into action and arrested

Dennis Ali and Ituma Sunday in connection to the incident

Police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu in a statement said the duo was the primary suspect in the dehumanizing treatment of the girls.

“The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested Dennis Ali and Ituma Sunday, the primary suspects in a disturbing viral video where two teenage girls were stripped, flogged, and dehumanised.

“The incident occurred in November 2023 at Ojiegbe Ngbo community in Ohaukwu LGA”, he said.

The spokesperson noted that the arrest is in keeping with the promise by the new Commissioner of Police, Anthonia Uche-Anya, to eradicate trial by ordeal, jungle justice, and self-help in criminal justice.

“She reaffirms the command’s commitment to rooting out such practices in Ebonyi State with stakeholder support,” he said

  • Healing the southeast

    Healing the southeast

The south-eastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo have been in the news for good and bad reasons recently. The good news included the signing into law of the South East Development Commission, SEDC, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This columnist has over the years canvassed for the establishment of that type of commission, to pursue joint economic activities, especially in agriculture, transportation, and energy. No doubt, common projects in agriculture and agro-allied industrialization, is the lowest hanging fruit.

There is an agricultural belt stretching from Anambra to Enugu down to Ebonyi State. There is also another stretch, between Abia and Imo, all of which can enjoy the intellectual output of the University of Agriculture, at Umudike. The SEDC should pioneer joint venture projects, between these states, which would lead to the resuscitation and redevelopment of complementary agro-allied industries, which had been abandoned after the Michael Okpara era. One of such, is large scale rice production, which could feed from the Anam river basin, stretching from Anambra to Enugu states.

Another common interest in agriculture should be palm oil production which was the mainstay of exports for the defunct Eastern Nigeria. Palm produce from Abia and Imo, if revitalized and modernized, could become a major foreign exchange earner for the governments in the region. On that too, the commission could tap into the knowledge base of the university at Umudike for research and development of that sector. There are other cash crops like cashew and cassava which could exponentially benefit from such synergy amongst the states.

Another major area that should interest the SEDC, is ensuring energy security for states in the region. Luckily there is abundance of crude oil in the region, and already a refinery in Anambra. The commission should be able to project the short, medium and long term needs of the region, and make necessary recommendations to the governments. It would be foolhardy not to take heed of the instructive inevitable match of the present administration to a free market driven and full deregulation of the petroleum industry.

Included in the energy mix, is the production and distribution of electricity in the region. All states in the region should quickly pass into law, their own state electricity regulatory authorities, similar to what has been done in Enugu State. With that in place, the various regulatory authorities can enter into a joint venture agreement, to enhance research on how the region can cooperate and provide multi-dimensional electricity sources for the region. The incessant collapse of the national grid indicates that in the near future, regions/states would have to resort to their own grids if they wish to make economic progress to lift their people out of poverty.

The SEDC should also be interest in designing interstate railways for the region, which will aid the movement of especially agricultural products to the cities. Luckily, railway is no longer in the exclusive legislative list, so states can legislate on it and through joint venture agreements cooperate in planning interstate railways. Again, the full deregulation of the fuel supply, indicates that mass transportation can be the only panache to the crisis in the sector. Through zonal arrangement, the commission can also venture into air and road transport relying on the economy of scale, which regional partnership will provide.

Of note, the cooperation within the region will attract massive private capital, more than what the states can individually offer. But for prebendalism and consequent mismanagement, the banks and other commonly owned financial institutions like the defunct African Continental Bank, would be in existence. No doubt, if the states can put in place joint bankable proposals in any of the economic activities enumerated above, private capital will tap into the region’s economy. Again, new privately dominant financial institutions can be put in place, by the region, to serve the economy of the region.

On the flip side, is the insecurity that has made Mondays in the region a compulsory day of sit-at-home. Unlike public holidays or even Sundays, Mondays remains a dreaded day of no activity, in most states in the region. Interestingly, the government of Enugu State, to a large extent, has tamed the monster, but obviously at a huge recurrent cost. One imagines what the state spends to keep the air and land surveillance every Monday within the state capital metropolis, and how expensive it would be to extend the show of power, across the state.

While congratulating the state for the reasonable success it has made in curtailing the activities of the so-called unknown gun men, this writer believes that a synergy amongst the states in the region would achieve a better result. In Anambra, many communities are raising huge capitals to buy private surveillance equipment, recruit operatives, and pay huge salaries to secure their communities. That type of ‘privately owned’ community policing, which has been copied by many communities, arguably was initiated by late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, in Nnewi community.

The economic damage from the insecurity crisis in the region is humongous, and the governors should build a synergy to deal with that challenge. Of course, kinetic and non-kinetic measures should be adopted by the federal, state and local government authorities to address the insecurity challenges. The low hanging fruit for this columnist, is good governance at all levels, which will lead to a buy-in from the people. As simple as it might seem, if the majority of the people see activities to show that the governments are deeply committed to their welfare, they would mobilize to help tame the insecurity.

Again, Enugu State government has shown how the people can be swayed to react differently. While there is diversification and increase in taxation, in the state, the people are not stringently complaining, because the state government appears to be doing enough to justify the increases. If those in governments in the region, can curtail their wasteful lifestyle, open new economic activities, especially for the youths, and engage the people on how the incomes generated are being used for their good, there will likely be a reduction in the prevalent criminality.

As I argued here last week, there is near complete abdication of economic activities at the local government areas, across the country. And that helps to feed the insurgency in the rural communities. The saying that a hungry man is an angry may, is a truism. To help tame the hunger and anger in the rural areas, state governors who want peace in their states, should allow and encourage local government administrators, to tap into the economic activities which the constitution has provided for them, so they can help to economically engage the idle minds in the villages.

Those of them, who refuse to engage in meaningful ventures, but prefers criminal activities, like kidnapping, extortion, and burglary, of which this writer was a recent victim, would face the security agencies.

  • Ebonyi shuts mining companies for non-compliance to community development agreement

Ebonyi shuts mining companies for non-compliance to community development agreement

Ebonyi state government on Wednesday, September 25, shut down four mining companies in various parts of the state over their alleged non-compliance with the Community Development Agreement they entered with host communities.

The CDA, it was learnt, is designed to ensure that mining companies contribute to the development of the communities in which they operate.

The Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Chidi Onyia stated this after he led a joint task force to seal the companies.

According to him, the miners were given enough time to comply with the agreement but vehemently refused to do so.

“The companies were given sufficient time, since July last year, to meet the CDA requirements but chose to ignore the rules,” he said.

The affected companies are Anli Mining and Investment Ltd; China Solid Rock 1 and 2, located in Ngodo Amachi in the Afikpo Local Government Area; and Shenglong Mining, located in Eziulo in the Ishielu Local Government Area.

Mr Onyia noted that the sites will remain closed until the companies comply with the state government’s directives.

He stated: “The people of Ebonyi are being treated as if they have no value. The Mining Act clearly stipulates that every miner must prepare a CDA to benefit and uplift the community in which they operate. However, most mining companies in Ebonyi State have disregarded this. This is against the state’s directives, and we will no longer tolerate it.”

“The land belongs to the people. Even though these companies have leased land from the Federal Government, they must ensure that the communities benefit from their operations.”

Onyia criticised one of the site operators, labelling its CDA as fraudulent.

“The agreement presented by Shenglong is fraudulent. There are clear procedures and templates for developing a CDA. How can a company of this size justify the community’s sole benefit as being one million naira annually?”

“We have companies here in Ebonyi constructing tarred roads for their host communities. Why is Shenglong different?” he queried.

He assured that the state government would continue to monitor mining activities to ensure that all companies follow the law, warning that any company found breaking the rules would be shut down.

JUST IN: Petrol Tanker drivers block Ebonyi roads over alleged extortion

Petrol tanker drivers have blocked the busy Spera-in-Deo junction in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, with their trucks.

The blockade began around 2 pm and has persisted for over an hour, with attempts to persuade the drivers to move their vehicles proving unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Local sources said that the tanker drivers were protesting against what they describe as ongoing extortion, exploitation, harassment, and intimidation by various state government task forces.

It was gathered that members of a notorious state government task force on traffic management placed nail-laden enforcement wood in front of one of the petrol trucks at the junction, puncturing its tyre and causing it to come to an abrupt stop.

The frustrated driver abandoned the truck and called for his colleagues, who quickly joined him in blockading the road with their vehicles, nearly resulting in an accident.

They are demanding that the destroyed tyre of the truck be replaced and an undertaking by the government that the incessant harassment of its members will stop.

The junction is an intersection of the Enugu-Abakaliki Highway and the Afikpo-Abakaliki Highway.

It is a major gateway from the two highways into the city centre and the blockade has caused a serious traffic holdup in the area.

The Senior Special Assistant on Transport to the Governor, Fred Nwogbaga could not be reached at the time of this report.
