  • Two women face N21m fraud charge

    Two women, Blessing Asugwa and Joy Ogbu, were on Wednesday brought before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a housewife of N21million.

    Asugwa, 23, and Ogbu, 24, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of obtaining under false pretence, fraud and theft.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladele Adebayo alleged that the defendants committed the offence between 2015 and 2017 at the Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.

    The court heard that the defendants collected the cash from the complainant, Mrs Amaka Joel, with a promise to help her invest in a business but failed to do so.

    They allegedly failed to return the money.

    Chief Magistrate O. O. Olatunji granted them N5 million bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The case continues on September 3.

  • Two men remanded for ‘abducting three children’

    An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded in prison custody two men – Charles Amakanyadioha and Raphel Amaechi – for allegedly kidnapping three children.

    Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo gave the order after hearing a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping preferred against them by the State Criminal Intelligence Investigation Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba.

    Amakanyadioha and Amaechi, both 52, pleaded not guilty.

    Following a police request, Mrs Adedayo remanded the defendants and adjourned further proceedings till June 25.

    Earlier, prosecuting Inspector Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the defendants committed the offences at about 1:40 p.m on June 14 at Gboke Street, Ijagemo in Ikorodu, Lagos.

    Uwadione said the defendants kidnapped three children aged two, four and six years.

    They are children of Mr Timothy Adeposi and Mrs Rashidat Oyedotun.

    The offences, the prosecutor added, contravened sections 2 and 3 of the Kidnapping Prohibition Laws of Lagos State, 2017.

  • Police arraign 11 suspected cultists for alleged murder

    Eleven suspected cultists were on Tuesday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for alleged murder.

    They were Adeniyi Bamgbala, 23; Rufia Adewale, 35; Gbenga Kolawale, 20; Waheed Salami, 20; Rilwan Okegbenro, 20; and Abiodun Jaiyesimi, 20; Femi Osifeso, 26; Abiodun Alegunleye, 20; Mohammed Sanni, 23; Sunday Vincent, 22; and Olatunji Ojo, 20.

    They were charged with conspiracy and murder but their plea was not taken.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladele Adebayo told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 6 around 10pm on Ireshe Road in Ikorodu.

    Adebayo alleged that the suspected cultists had stormed the home of one Sodiq Adewale, 26, shot him to death with a locally made pistol and hacked his body with a cutlass.

    He said that the alleged offences contravened Sections 223 and 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate O.O. Olatunji remanded the 11 defendants at the Ikoyi Prison, pending the outcome of legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    He adjourned till July 10.

     

  • Man remanded for beating wife to death over sex

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Friday remanded one 31-year-old Godspower Johnson accused of beating his wife to death during a fight over sex.

    Chief Magistrate O.O. Olatunji, ordered that Godspower should be kept at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos, for the next 30 days pending  advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the case.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Oladele Adebayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 21, at 5.30p.m., at No. 28, Adekoye St., Igbo-Elerin, Ishashi.

    He alleged that Johnson  beat his wife, Deborah, aged 31, to death during a fight.

    “The defendant wanted to make love to his wife, he inserted his two fingers into her private part which didn’t go down well with the deceased. A fight  ensued leading the defendant to beat up his wife,” he said.

    The prosecutor said that murder contravened the provisions of Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    NAN reports that Section 223 stipulates death sentence for the offence.

    Olatunji adjourned the case until June 7 for mention.

  • Court remands Civil Defence operative for ‘killing’ colleague, Korean

    An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos Monday remanded a Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) operative, Innocent Oshemi, accused of shooting his colleague and a Korean to death on April 8, 2019.

    Magistrate M. C. Ayinde made the order following an application signed by the Officer in Charge (Legal) of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Asuquo Effiong, an Assistant Commissioner (ACP).

    She ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody and the duplicate file sent to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DDP), for legal advice.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Adetutu Sanusi told the court, in a charge marked JA/13/2019 that Oshemi, 32, allegedly committed the offence at about 1:55pm on April 8, at the Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics (LADOL) Free Zone, Tarkwa-Bay Island, where he was on guard duty.

    She said Oshemi, of Ette Centre, Enugu, following an argument, shot and killed his colleague, Mamman Wuyah, 28, and a Korean, Taekkun Kang, 47, who died in a hospital.

    The court heard that the shots were fired from a G3 Riffle issued to him, “by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), for guard duties.”

    According to Sanusi, the offence contravened Section 222 and was punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Oshemi’s plea was not taken.

    Sanusi moved the application for a remand warrant.

    “Your honour a remand warrant is in the court’s file. We hereby make an application to remand the defendant,” she said.

    But defence counsel S.O. Ogunbiyi opposed her.

    He said: “Remand proceedings are not automatic. Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2015 provides that the prosecution must satisfy the court as to why the defendant should be remanded.

    “The law allows the court to make an enquiry as to whether it is an appropriate case for remand. We shall be urging the court to do same in this case.”

    Following his prayer, Magistrate Ayinde enquired about the case from the Investigative Police Officer, Mr Oderinde Gaffar, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP).

    Gaffar answered: “The scene of the crime was visited. The point where the first deceased (Wuyah) was shot as well as where the second deceased (Kang) was also shot were visited. The second deceased was shot about 15 yards near where the first deceased was shot. We’ve visited the hospital where the deceased were taken. The CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) which covers the area and captured the incident has also been retrieved.”

    In a bench ruling, Magistrate Ayinde upheld the prosecution’s application.

    She held: “I’ve gone through the case file and I am of the view that there are further questions requiring some explanation.

    “I therefore remand the defendant in prison custody for 30 days, pending advice on the matter from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    “The case is adjourned till 6th June, 2019.”

  • Woman allegedly kills cleric for attempted rape

    A woman, Gift Daniel, who allegedly killed a cleric for attempting to rape her, was Thursday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    According to the Police, Daniel, 25, of No. 1, Alhaji Aleke Street, Bariga, Lagos, stabbed Taofeek Olumoro, 52, to death with a kitchen knife.

    The defendant was arraigned before Mrs. A. Kusanu on a one-count charge of murder.

    Prosecuting Inspector Oladele Adebayo told the court that the defendant committed the offence at about 10pm on February 16, at No. 3, Bajulaiye Street, Fadeyi, Lagos.

    Adebayo said: “The defendant was lured into the deceased’s room where he tried to forcibly have sexual intercourse with her and in her defence she picked up a knife and stabbed him fatally on his chest.”

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
    Daniel pleaded “Not guilty.”

    Chief Magistrate Kusanu granted her N200, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She also ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    The case was adjourned till March 27 for the DPP’s advice.

  • Two ‘fake’ lawyers charged with fraud

    Two persons were yesterday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for posing as lawyers to defraud some potential tenants.

    Taiwo Alatise, 53, and Abiodun Olatoye, 67, were charged with conspiracy, stealing, obtaining under false pretences, forgery and being in possession of false documents.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Kehinde Omisakin said the defendants committed the offence on January 16, at Ilupeju, Lagos.

    She alleged that Alatise and Olatoye obtained N880,000 from Lamidi Adenuga and Abidemi Mustapha on the pretext of renting a three-bedroom flat to them.

    Omisakin said the defendants also presented themselves as lawyers in charge of the flat at Ilupeju and were found in possession of false documents.

    “They also forged a letterhead and logo showing them as lawyers and property consultants, which they used in defrauding the public,” she alleged.

    Chief Magistrate A.O. Komolafe admitted the defendants to N250,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The case continues on March 7.

  • Two men docked for stealing bus

    Two men  on Friday appeared  before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged theft of a Mazda bus valued at N2.1 million.

    The accused, Temitope Adisa, 29, and Christopher Stanley, 25, were arraigned on a three-count of conspiracy, stealing and intent to steal.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde Olatunde, said that the accused committed the offences at 9.30p.m., at Itamaga, Ikorodu, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole the  bus with registration number FKJ 704 XU by using a master key.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 287, 330(d) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Komolafe admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

    Substantive hearing in the case will start on Nov. 25.

  • Man pleads guilty to stealing cooking pot

    A 22-year-old man, Adekunle Olukoya, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to stealing a cooking pot valued at N70,000

    Olukoya who was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on one-count of stealing, pleaded guilty to the charge.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp. Oladele Adebayo, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 27, at 7.00 a.m., at 99, Borno way, Ebute Meta.

    He said that the accused stole the cooking pot valued at N70,000 belonging to the complainant, Taiwo Kareem.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State that prescribes a seven year jail term for offenders.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr O.O. Olatunji, ordered that the accused be remanded in Ikoyi prison and fixed August 13 for facts and sentencing.

  • Sales assistant disappears with employer’s N3m jerseys

    A 20-year-old sales assistant, Nnamdi Mbanefo, was on Friday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing his employer’s jerseys valued at N3 million.

    Mbanefo, resident of No. 11, Kadiri St., Surulere, is standing trial on a charge of theft.

    He, however, denied the charge.

    But Police Prosecutor Cousin Adams told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 2 at No. 92, Ojuelegba Road,
    Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused had at various times refused to deposit proceeds from the sales of jerseys valued at N3 million.

    The offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajibade, in her ruling, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

    Ajibade said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and adjourned the case until July 23.
