  • Man in court for stealing 15 bags of pepper

    A 25-year-old man, Ismail Mohammed, who allegedly broke into a shop and stole 15 bags of Ghana pepper, was on Monday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Mohammed was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, break-in and stealing, offences he denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Maria Dauda, said that the accused committed the offences on April 7, at 4.00 a.m., at Shop 145, White Sand Market, Otto, Ebute Meta.

    She said that the accused broke into the shop and stole 15 bags of Ghana pepper, valued at N450,000, property of one Monday Ezeigwe.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 309 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajibade, admitted him to bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

    Suspected cultists remanded for smashing teenager’s head

    Two suspected cultists – Sikiru Ajibade and Gafar Isah – who allegedly smashed the head of a teenager, are to cool their heels at Kirikiri Prisons on the orders of an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Ajibade, 34, a.k.a. Farakin and Isah, 25, a.k.a. Eti, who allegedly belong to O-Strong and Ijikenji Confraternity, were brought before the court on a charge of murder.

    Their pleas were not taken by the magistrate, who said the court lacked the jurisdiction to try murder case.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr M.O. Olajuwon, said the accused should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions ( DPP ).

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Babatope Julius, told the court that the accused committed the offence sometime in October 2016 on Lagos Island.

    He alleged that the accused, suspected cultists, had unlawfully killed a 19-year-old, Charles Igbinovia, by smashing his head with a stone.

    The offence violates Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The case was adjourned until February 28 pending the DPP’s advice.

    Court remands Mother for pouring hot water that led to son death

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ court on Friday remanded  Mary Eze, in Ikoyi prison for allegedly pouring hot water on her seven-year-old son for misplacing N200 which led to his death.

    The accused, 40, a petty trader appeared before Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, on a charge for murder, but her plea was not taken by the court.

    The Investigating Police Officer, (IPO) Insp. Chris Akpanomo, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 8,  at No. 670, Ikorodu Road, Owode Elede in Ikorodu.

    He alleged that the accused had sent the deceased with the last N200 she had, to buy food for her, but he returned to tell her that he had misplaced the money.

    According to Akpanomo, out of annoyance she poured hot water on him, locked him in the house and went about her daily routine.

    He added that it was his persistent shouts that attracted neighbours, who rushed him to the hospital where he later died.

    The offence contravened section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which stipulates a death sentence for convicts.

    The Chief Magistrate ordered that the accused be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons pending the outcome of legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP’s).

    She, however, adjourned the case until January 24, 2018 for legal advice.

    Court remands 12 over “Ile-Zik” kidnappers den

    Twelve suspected kidnappers including a woman, arrested by the police in connection with a kidnappers’ den at Ile-Zik Bus Stop in Ikeja, were remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons on the orders of a Lagos magistrate.

    They include Hakeem Ogundele, 32; Noah Samuel, 25; Ayomide Olatunji, 44; Felix Matthew, 34; American Obodoyibo, 42; Shola Elemo, 32; and Adijat Mudashiru, 32.

    The rest are Tunde Akanji, 41; Adeoye Adekeye, 38; Patrick Onwubufor, 65, Samuel Iyede, 50; and Bright Amankwa, 36.

    Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias said the accused are to remain behind bars pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

    The “Ile Zik 12 men” were brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempted kidnap and possession of arms and ammunition.

    The bus stop is named after a four-storey building built by the first President of Nigeria, the late Dr Nnamidi Azikiwe.

    Another alleged kidnappers’ hole had been discovered a few days earlier at Ijaiye on the Lagos-Abeokuta Highway.

    Sergeant Kehinde Omisakin, the police prosecutor, told the court Friday that the accused committed the offences on August  10 between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. at Ile-Zik Bus Stop near Ajayi Farm in Ikeja on the Oshodi-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway.

    According to her, the 12 accused had conspired to kidnap some students of a nearby Girls Junior High School, but they luckily escaped.

    “Some school uniforms and notebooks of the students were found in possession of the accused.”

    Omisakin said one live ammunition, nine empty shells of expended ammunition, one kitchen knife and road maps were recovered from them.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences which contravened Sections 22, 330 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said kidnapping and other related offences carry life imprisonment or capital punishment.

    The case was adjourned to Aug. 22.

    Suspected cultist charged with defilement, initiation of teenager

    The police in Lagos on Friday arraigned a suspected cultist, Destiny Ikechukwu, who allegedly defiled a teenager and initiated her into a secret cult.

    Ikechukwu, 31, appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on a four-count charge bordering on abduction, defilement, cult initiation and indecent assault.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, told the court that the accused committed the offences from June 26 to June 28 on Afolabi Street, Shibiri in Ojo, Lagos.

    Omisakin said that the accused abducted a 15-year-old girl and forcefully initiated her into a secret cult known as Arubaga Cult.

    “Ikechukwu kept his victim against her wish for three days and had carnal knowledge of her during the period.

    “He also used a blade to cut the right thumb of his victim and collected her blood which was used to swear to an oath of secrecy,” the prosecutor said.

    Omisakin said that the offences contravened Sections 42(1), 127, 135 and 141 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned further hearing in the case until Aug. 23.

    Court remands man over arson

    A 30-year-old Ikechukwu Ezeigwen, who allegedly set a building ablaze and attempted to murder a mother and her seven children, was on Wednesday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, wilful and unlawful damage, attempted murder and belonging to an unlawful society.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

    Magistrate Mr A.T. Elias refused the accused bail but ruled that the matter be taken to a higher court and that the bail should be perfected there also.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 18 at about 3.00 a.m., at No. 1, Miabi St., Ajegunle.

    She said that Ezeigwen, who belonged to the “Eiye confraternity,’’ had attempted to murder Victoria Eriogun and her seven children by setting ablaze the two-room apartment they occupied, while they were sleeping.

    The offences contravened Sections 41, 230, 341 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The case has been adjourned until June 29, pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Man remanded in court for train cables theft

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the remand of Timothy Azegbe, at the Ikoyi Prisons, for allegedly damaging and stealing cables attached to a train.

    The accused, 26, had appeared before Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Adejuwon, on a charge of unlawful damage.

    His plea was, however, not taken and the request of the prosecution was upheld that the case be transferred to a higher court.

    Magistrate Adejuwon ordered that the accused be remanded and the case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the Office of the Federal Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), on the Marina.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Moses Uademevbo, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 23 at about 3.00 a.m., at the Iddo Railway Terminus, Iddo.

    He alleged that the accused was caught disconnecting and stealing cables that supplied electricity from the train’s main engine to the various coaches.

    The offence, he said, contravened Section 1 (9) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap. M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    The case has been adjourned until July 11, pending legal advice from the Office of the Federal DPP.

     

  • Court grants N7m bail to lovers for allegedly defiling 2 sisters

    Catherine Edet, 29, and her male lover, Chinedu Nwobodo, 30, were on Tuesday granted N7 million bail by an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly defiling two sisters.

    . The trial judge, Mr A. T. Elias, admitted Nwobodo to a N5 million bail with two sureties, who are to deposit the sum of N250,000 each into the account of the court.

    Edet was, however, admitted to a bail of N2 million with two sureties each in like sum.

    The duo are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, defilement and failing to provide necessary care and endangering the health of the children in their custody.

    They both, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin, had told the court that the accused had committed the offences sometimes in December 2016 at Ikota Housing Estate, Ajah, Lagos.

    Omisakin alleged that Nwobodo, Edet’s boyfriend, was fond of defiling his lover’s two daughters, aged 9 and 12, whenever he visited.

    “When he had realised that his lover was fast sleep after she must have drunk to stupor, he would have intercourse with the two girls,” she said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offences contravened Sections 137, 245 and 411 of the Criminal law of Lagos State, 2015 as amended.

    The court adjourned the case until May 10.

    Man docked over alleged possession of fake N4, 000

    A 35-year-old man, Sunday John, was on Tuesday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged possession of four pieces of counterfeit N1,000 notes.

    John, whose address was not provided in the charge sheet, is standing trial on a two-count charge of being in possession of counterfeit notes with intent to cheat and cause wrongful loss.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde said that the offences were committed on March 22 at about 8.50 a.m, at Costain Bus Stop in Lagos.

    Olatunde told the court that the accused had tried to use one of the fake N1000 note to purchase apples from the complainant, Joy Samuel.

    The prosecutor said that the vendor, who identified the N1000 note as fake, raised an alarm which led to the arrest of the accused.

    Olatunde said that the offences contravened Sections 134 and 372 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin-Williams admitted the accused to N50, 000 bail with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Folarin-Williams adjourned further hearing in the case until April 5.

  • Man in court for disrupting church service, damaging N5m property

    A 49-year-old man, Abiodun Adeyinka, who allegedly damaged  property worth N5 million belonging to the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), on Monday appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Adeyinka is facing a six-count charge bordering on malicious damage, conspiracy, unlawful assault and manner likely to cause breach of peace.

    The accused, however, pleaded innocence to the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams, said that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 3, 2016, at noon, at No. 64, Adekunle Banjo St., Magodo, Lagos.

    He said that the accused forcibly entered into a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) building located at the address during worship.

    Adams said the accused caused panic among the worshippers before damaging the church property.

    He said the damaged property were Jazz musical instrument, Konga drum, piano, five wireless microphones, six pieces of altar clothes, assorted church perfumes, wedding gowns and sacred pictures of Mary and Jesus.

    The prosecutor said that the accused also assaulted the presiding head of the church and tore her church garment.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 50, 126, 166, 170, 309 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Helen Omisore, admitted the accused to a bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Omisore said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case till April 10, for further hearing.
