By-election: Edo APC adopts Ikpea as party’s candidate

The Edo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has ratified the adoption of Hon Joseph Ikpea as the party’s sole candidate for the August 16 by-election to fill the vacant seat of the Edo Central Senatorial District.

Ikpea was adopted last month by the party’s caucus in Edo Central.

His adoption was ratified at an extraordinary meeting of the State Working Committee.

A statement by Edo APC spokesman, Prince Peter Uwadiae, said the adoption of Ikpea was in line with the Party’s commitment to inclusiveness and respect for grassroots leadership.

The statement said the SWC would meet on Tuesday, July 8th, for final resolution and ratification in the matter regarding the vacant seat in Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

According to the statement, “The Party reaffirmed its recognition and respect for the leadership structures at both the Federal Constituency and Senatorial District levels.

“As the Vice Chairman of Edo Central Senatorial District, Hon. Esangbedo formally informed the SWC that the APC Caucus in Edo Central had unanimously adopted Hon. Joe Ikpea for the sole candidacy of the Senatorial bye-election.

“Following his presentation, the SWC, through a voice vote, ratified the adoption of Hon. Ikpea as the party’s official candidate.”

On the matter concerning the Ovia Federal Constituency, the Vice Chairman of Edo South Senatorial District, Hon. Benson Edosomwan, briefed the Committee that a meeting has been scheduled for Monday, 7th July, 2025, to deliberate and resolve the issue.”

Edo Speaker’s defection to APC expected, says PDP chair

The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, yesterday said Tuesday’s defection of the Speaker of the 8th Edo House of Assembly, Chief Blessing Agbebaku, from PDP to All Progressives Congress (APC) was not surprising, because he had long operated as a covert APC loyalist.

Aziegbemi, briefing reporters at the new secretariat of PDP at the Government Reservation Area (GRA), near Government House, Benin, said Edo leaders of the party found it laughable, and indeed comical, that APC members in the state rolled out the drums to celebrate the exit from PDP of the representative of Owan West Constituency (Agbebaku).

He said: “Tuesday’s stage-managed fanfare in Benin City was not news. It was merely the official coronation of what had become a public secret. For months running, Agbebaku had served the interests of APC, in both conduct and allegiance.

“What played out on Tuesday at Urhokpota Hall, Benin, near the palace of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II (the venue of the defection), was nothing more than a desperate spectacle, designed to impress President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and APC’s national leadership, an illusion worthy of a David Copperfield performance.

“Let it be remembered that under Agbebaku’s leadership, and in collaboration with Governor Monday Okpebholo and Edo APC, duly-elected local government chairmen, who are overwhelmingly PDP members, were illegally suspended.

“Despite the expiration of the unconstitutional suspension, Agbebaku refused to reinstate them, acting with clear partisan bias. If ever there is evidence of his real political affiliation to APC, this is it.”

Edo chairman of PDP also declared that while the leaders of APC across Nigeria were celebrating the “shameful and ridiculous” defection of Agbebaku from the PDP, he and other leaders of the party in the state remained unbothered.

He said: “Men who stand for nothing will always fall for anything. Even more laughable is the APC’s claim that 17 of the 18 Edo local government chairmen also defected to their party in Benin City on Tuesday. This is pure fiction.

“We challenge APC’s leaders to name a single duly-elected PDP chairman who defected to APC. The truth is that what they paraded are political appointees and stooges, illegally imposed on the councils.

“I challenge Edo governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to release the names of the PDP’s local government council chairmen in the state that defected to the APC.

“This charade is part of the broader strategies by the APC to create a false narrative of political dominance in Edo, but the residents of the state are politically smarter and cannot be deceived by such theatrics.”

Aziegbemi called on PDP members and supporters in Edo to remain focused, undeterred and unwavering in their commitment to justice, while assuring them that the leaders of the party would continue to pursue all legal avenues to reclaim the allegedly stolen mandate of PDP’s governorship candidate during the September 21, 2024 election in Edo, Dr. Asue Igbodalo, from the brazenly-manipulated poll.

    • Ruling party’s chair declares state PDP dead

Majority Leader in Edo State House of Assembly, Donald Okugbe (PDP – Akoko-Edo II), and three other lawmakers yesterday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The other lawmakers are Bright Iyamu (PDP – Orhionmwon South II); Richard Edosa (PDP – Oredo West); and Sunday Ojezele (LP – Esan South East).

By the defection, APC now has 13 members in the House, while PDP members are 11.

Edo Chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe, described PDP as dead in the state.

During the 2023 general election, of the 24 seats in the House of Assembly, PDP won 15 seats; APC had eight seats, while LP won one seat. PDP’s Destiny Enabulele representing Ovia Southwest Constituency was sacked by the election petitions tribunal, and replaced with APC’s Sunday Aghedo.

With yesterday’s defection, APC now has 13 seats and PDP is left with 11 seats, while LP is without any seat.

Tenebe, welcoming the defectors in Benin, said: “Today (March 12) marks a significant moment for our party, the ruling APC, a testament to the strength of our vision and the resonance of our ideals. We are here to warmly welcome some members of the Edo State House of Assembly, who, after careful consideration and deep reflection, have chosen to join our ranks.

“The decision to defect from the divided and depleted PDP, and embrace our party, is a powerful endorsement of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to progress, unity, justice, economic prosperity and food security for the people.

“The honourable members, who bring with them a wealth of experience and diverse perspectives, have recognised that APC offers the most-promising path forward for Edo State and our country, Nigeria. They have seen the clarity of the policies, the integrity of the leadership of Governor Okpebholo and the unwavering dedication to make the lives of Edo people better.

“We understand that the decision to change political allegiances is not taken lightly. It requires courage, conviction and a belief in a better future. We commend the honourable members for their bravery and willingness to stand with us, as we join hands with Governor Okpebholo to build a stronger economy, improve education, promote social harmony and secure the lives of Edo people.”

He said the defection was not a matter of increasing the party’s numbers, but about strengthening the collective resolve and bringing together individuals who shared a common purpose and a desire to make a real difference.

The Edo APC chairman said: “We value the contributions of each and every member, and we are confident that our new members will play vital roles in our journey towards success.

“Some may question the motives behind these defections. Some may attempt to sow seeds of doubt and division. For the record, the Nigerian Constitution, as amended, is clear on the issue of defection.

“Section 68 (1) (g) of the Nigerian Constitution explains that an elected party member may defect, as long as it is as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”

“The PDP in Edo State is dead. A solemn funeral service will be organised for the PDP in Edo State very soon. Based on the foregoing, the members have not flouted any law, and their actions are in order. With the defections, APC now controls the majority in Edo State House of Assembly. The dead PDP, with no structure or offices in Edo State, is now in the minority.”

Tenebe said the new members had seen the handiwork of Okpebholo in over 100 days in office, and were impressed.

He said: “No one compelled them (the four lawmakers) to join our fold. They made the decision based on the numerous good programmes that Governor Okpebholo has been carrying out across the three senatorial districts of the state.

“As a political party, we are going to restrategise ahead of the 2027 elections. We will mobilise over two million voters and ensure we win all available seats in Edo State. We will also deliver a landslide victory for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In fact, Edo State will produce the highest number of votes for President Tinubu in the entire Southsouth.”

Edo chairman of APC alleged that some opposition politicians were behind the insecurity in the state, asking them to desist.

Edo APC, PDP chairmen clash over gunshots near Edo tribunal venue

The chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, clashed on Wednesday following a gunfire incident near the venue of the governorship election petitions tribunal in Benin City.

Gunshots were reportedly fired by gunmen in a white Toyota Hilux van on Ezoti Street, close to the Edo High Court Complex, where the tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, was sitting.

A viral video showed the chaotic scene as lawyers, litigants, politicians, and journalists rushed to safety to avoid stray bullets.

The situation was quickly brought under control by heavily armed security operatives, allowing the tribunal proceedings to continue.

In response to the incident, Tenebe condemned the shootings, accusing members of the PDP of being responsible.

He called the act “deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” further escalating tensions between the two major political parties in the state.

Tenebe stated: “The tribunal is a sacred space where justice is meant to be administered impartially. Any act of violence within its walls undermines the very foundation of our legal system and threatens the safety of all involved.

“Regardless of political affiliation, resorting to violence to resolve disputes is never justifiable. We must all condemn the shootings in the strongest possible terms.”

The Edo chairman of the APC also asserted that violence has no place in a civilised society while declaring that those responsible for the heinous act must be brought to justice swiftly and without exception.

Aziegbemi, however, accused the APC’s leaders of planning to frustrate the PDP’s members from reclaiming the mandate given to the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Asue Ighodalo.

He alleged that Edo APC’s leaders were scared of justice and resorted to deploying thugs disguised in PDP-branded attire to disrupt the legal process, allegedly pointing fingers at the members of his party (PDP).

The Edo chairman of the PDP said: “We strongly dissociate ourselves from the shooting incident that occurred near the venue of the sitting of the tribunal in Benin. We wish to state that this shameful incident is another in the series of clandestine efforts by the APC to frustrate the legal process and tarnish the image of our party.

“Why would the PDP attempt to disrupt the only opportunity it has to reclaim the mandate given to it by the people of Edo State during the last governorship election?

“The PDP is aware that its only pathway to justice is through the legal process. Therefore, it would be utterly senseless for anyone to suggest that the party would deploy thugs to disrupt the process and jeopardise its chances.”

Aziegbemi also disclosed that he had directed all supporters and members of the PDP in Edo to remain calm and to be optimistic that the party’s standard bearer would emerge victorious.

The then representative of the Edo Central Senatorial District, Senator Monday Okpebholo, of the APC, won the governorship election in Edo on September 21, 2024, and was inaugurated on November 12 last year.

Seven of the 18 political parties that participated in the election, and filed petitions at the tribunal, were the PDP, Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Accord (A), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Action Alliance (AA), all of which wanted their candidates to be declared winners of the keenly contested poll.

Edo APC chair condemns attack on members, lawyers at election tribunal

Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe, has denounced the attack on the party’s members and lawyers during the inaugural sitting of the Edo governorship election petitions tribunal on Monday.

The incident occurred at the High Court Complex on Sapele Road, Benin.

Tenebe described the attack as unacceptable and regrettable, revealing that the Edo APC had previously alerted security agencies about the planned assault.

However, he lamented that the police failed to act on the intelligence.

Speaking on Tuesday in Benin, Tenebe stated that many APC members and lawyers were caught off guard by the violent invasion of the court complex by thugs.

He called on authorities to investigate the attack and ensure those responsible face justice.

He said: “The thugs violently attacked APC’s members and some lawyers representing us and other political parties, with many persons sustaining various degrees of injury.

“The thugs, who were seen in branded T-shirts and fez caps, came with battle axes, bottles and other dangerous weapons, which they used freely on APC members, who did not provoke any fight. They took over the court premises and adjoining streets, without resistance from the police.

“In the circumstance, Edo APC will not guarantee the restraining of our members in subsequent court dates. We are left with no option, but to defend ourselves.”

Edo chairman of APC also urged the teeming members of the party to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, while admonishing all residents of the state to continue to support the focused and visionary administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Edo APC, CAN trade words over alleged stealing of FG food palliatives

A war of words has erupted between the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the alleged theft of federal government food palliatives.

The controversy began after a viral video circulated on social media, showing people looting 10kg bags of rice from a truck during the ongoing end bad governance protests in Edo state.

Reacting to the allegation, the chairman of CAN, Edo state chapter, Apostle Irekpono Omoike, clarified that the rice being taken in the video was meant for distribution by a vendor contracted by the Edo State CAN Implementation Committee for its Christian Feeding Programme.

He said the programme was wholly sponsored by the state government and has no connection to the federal government.

However, the Edo State APC chapter dismissed the CAN chairman’s statement and insisted that the rice in question was from the stock provided by the federal government.

The party accused CAN of colluding with the state government to steal and hoard the rice instead of distributing it to the people of Edo.

At a press conference held at the Chancellery of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin, in Benin City, CAN chairman, Apostle Irekpono Omoike clarified that the bags of rice were from the second phase of the state government-sponsored Christian feeding programme.

He revealed that in the first phase, which began in May 2024, 60,000 bags of rice were distributed across the state’s three senatorial districts: Edo South received 27,000 bags, Edo North 18,000 bags, and Edo Central 15,000 bags.

The secretary of the CAN Implementation Committee for the Christian Feeding Programme, Revd. Osagie Ehrunmwunse, further explained that the vandalised truck belonged to a logistics company contracted to transport the rice from Ekpoma.

The truck had broken down, leading to a delay, and they had directed that the rice be taken for safekeeping before it was intercepted by hoodlums.

Meanwhile, the protests in Edo State have remained relatively peaceful, with thousands of demonstrators gathering daily at the Ring Road Roundabout in Benin City.

They bear placards with messages such as “Tinubu, reduce the hunger,” “APC, stop suffering us,” and “Say No To High Fuel Price.”

The state commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, has called on the protesters to maintain peace and follow the law.

Edo APC guber campaign: Why I declined DG new media position – Mayaki

Prince John Mayaki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state, explained on Sunday, June 9, why he declined his nomination as the director general of new media for the Edo APC governorship campaign council.

He revealed that he is still recovering from a fatal auto crash that claimed the lives of five people and emphasised the need to ensure peace and maintain a harmonious work environment within the Edo APC.

Mayaki said: “I am honoured to have been offered the position. The role is significant, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and confidence placed in me. However, after careful consideration, I have decided to decline the offer.

“A key consideration in my decision is the potential impact on my working relationship with a colleague, who was initially considered for this role. Accepting the position could create an uncomfortable situation, and I prioritise maintaining a harmonious work environment. I have communicated my decision to the relevant leaders, before the final announcement.

“As a person of faith, I strive to live by principles that promote peace, integrity, and goodwill. I do not wish to hold grudges or engage in actions that could generate bad blood between myself and others. It is essential for me to act in a manner that aligns with my values and fosters positive relationships.”

The APC’s chieftain also stated that he needed more time to fully recover from the accident.

He said: “I am currently recovering from a devastating accident that unfortunately claimed the lives of five people, and had a debilitating impact on me. My primary focus at this time is on my health and well-being. Engaging in a demanding role such as the Director of New Media in governorship election could potentially hinder my recovery process. I must prioritise my healing, and ensure I am in the best possible condition, before taking on significant responsibilities.

“I want to assure the party and our governorship candidate (Senator Monday Okpebholo) that my decision to decline the offer does not diminish my commitment to the APC, and our collective vision for Edo State.”

Mayaki assured that he would continue to support the APC and its candidate in Edo in any capacity that suits his current situation and abilities.

He expressed confidence that the Edo APC team would be victorious in the September 21, 2024 governorship election and wished everyone the best in their endeavors.

  • Obaseki’s commissioner, Edo APC clash over competent guber candidates

Obaseki’s commissioner, Edo APC clash over competent guber candidates

Edo state commissioner for communication and orientation, Chris Nehikhare, and the state’s chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed on Tuesday, April 30, over godfatherism and competent governorship candidates for the September 21, election.

Nehikhare, an ally of Edo governor, Godwin Obaseki, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), fired the first salvo in a press statement, by describing APC’s governorship candidate in the state, Monday Okpebholo, as camera-shy and ineloquent politician, while alleging that APC and Okpebholo did not mean well for Edo residents.

He titled his press statement: “APC’s infantile antics to return the godfathers, starve Edo people of development.”

He said: “I watched with disdain and utmost disappointment, the most recent embarrassing outing of Senator Monday Okpebholo, wherein he promised to release Edo State’s resources to political leaders, in exchange for their support to clinch the governorship seat.

“Stuttering and muttering his words, after several efforts to get his handlers to polish him up to publicly address the people, Senator Okpebholo said he would end the ‘suffering’ of political leaders under Godwin Obaseki by granting them unfettered access to the people’s purse, while neglecting the state’s development and short-changing the majority of Edo people.

“So, in Senator Okpebholo’s warped thinking, the best reward system for his political benefactors is to end their ‘suffering’ by sharing the patrimony and resources of Edo State among these predatory few, as against prioritising the development of the state.”

Nehikhare also stated that it was nonsensical for anyone to suggest that a governor must remain loyal to non-state actors, who allowed their selfish interests to supersede those of the people.

Edo APC, through its assistant publicity secretary, Victor Osehobo, in its reaction, titled: “Debunking the misguided misinformation of the PDP government and setting the records straight,” accused Nehikhare and his PDP’s government in the state of standing truth on its head, and embellishing falsehood for almost eight years of poor governance, mismanagement of the state’s resources, legacy of broken pledges, and spurious Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

It said: “Fortunately for us, the ever-enlightened people of Edo State, the archaic antics of the sinking PDP’s government, led by the outgoing governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, will soon come to an end (on November 12, 2024).

“Contrary to the unfounded allegations hurled against Senator Monday Okpebholo, his commitment to the welfare and development of Edo State is unwavering. Any suggestion that he intends to prioritise the interests of a select few over the broader populace is not only baseless, but also malicious.

“Senator Okpebholo’s vision for Edo State is anchored on progress, and equitable distribution of resources for the betterment of all residents, something that is alien to the PDP. Is it not a case of pot calling kettle black, for the PDP to be hawking the notion that the APC is synonymous with godfatherism?

Read Also: ‘Why Obaseki named Labour House in Edo after Oshiomhole’

“PDP originated godfatherism in 1999, and has since then modified and perfected the venom across the country. In 2024, in Edo State, Asue Ighodalo, who is not a member of the PDP, was imposed as its governorship candidate by his godfather, Godwin Obaseki. So, the claims about the APC not only lack substance, but also disregard the democratic principles upon which the party is founded. APC stands for transparency, accountability, and good governance, values that are very confusing to the PDP.

“Senator Okpebholo’s candidacy embodies principles, and his track record speaks volumes about his dedication to serving the people of Edo State selflessly. It is no longer a secret that Edo PDP has been plagued by credibility crises, since the godfather, Godwin Obaseki, joined the party on June 19, 2020, ahead of the September 19, 2020 governorship election. PDP is a party brewed in godfatherism, and it is marred by corruption, ineptitude, and a blatant disregard for the welfare of the people.”

The main opposition APC in Edo also stated that the attempt by Nehikhare to portray the PDP as a viable alternative to the APC in Edo 2024 governorship election was not only misleading, but laughable, pointing out that relevant PDP and Labour Party’s (LP’s) chieftains were now defecting to Edo APC in droves.

  • Violence, thuggery rock Edo APC’s stakeholders’ meeting

Violence, thuggery rock Edo APC’s stakeholders’ meeting

Violence broke out yesterday at the venue of a meeting of stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Benin Kingdom, Edo South Senatorial District of Edo State.

The strategic and well-attended meeting, ahead of the April 24 commencement of campaigns and September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo, was hosted at the private residence of Ikpoba-Okha LGA’s apex leader of APC, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, a former governorship aspirant on APC’s platform and ex-federal lawmaker, off Dumez/Sapele Road, Benin.

Shortly after the commencement of the meeting, many hoodlums and fully-armed political thugs suddenly invaded the venue, and injured some APC leaders and members in the LGA, who are on danger list in hospitals in Benin, while many expensive vehicles were vandalised and other valuables were carted away by the hoodlums.

Agbonayinma, while later speaking with reporters in Benin, over the sad incident, said: “Ikpoba-Okha LGA’s APC Chairman, Hon. Sunny Ogbewe, earlier called me that the leadership of Ikpoba-Okha LGA of APC was coming to meet with me, in order to rub minds with me on the way forward for the party in the LGA.

“It was, however, a sad story. My friend, and my brother, the one that I will call my son, Osarobo Idahosa, and Cromwell Osaigbovo, led many others, came here (his private residence in Benin) and destroyed everything, beat up APC’s women leader in Ikpoba-Okha LGA and her husband. Both of them are in the hospital.

“The attackers vandalised vehicles, broke chairs and tables. They also carted away drinks and a generator that was brought to power the equipment for the meeting, and they destroyed the hired musical equipment.

“This is not how politics should be played. Going violent and beating up elderly persons are condemnable. My teeming supporters and I cannot be intimidated. We are marching forward, and, God willing, victory is sure for Edo APC and its governorship candidate.

“For sometime, APC’s leaders and members in Ikpoba-Okha LGA have been pleading with me to come and take the leadership position, especially to be the apex leader of APC in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, but I told them that I was not interested, because of what I have gone through. I lost my grown-up son, and I am still going through a lot, because of the trauma.”

Many security operatives, particularly personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) and policemen from Edo command, were later deployed in the venue of the meeting, after the escape of the thugs, and normalcy was restored, with the APC’s stakeholders continuing with their meeting at the same venue.

The Ikpoba-Okha LGA’s apex leader of APC then declared that the hoodlums that invaded the venue of the peaceful meeting would pay dearly for all the valuable items that they destroyed.

Agbonayinma stated that he would not take for granted the opportunity given to him by Edo leaders of APC, while promising not to disappoint members of the party in the densely-populated LGA, where the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osarodion Ogie, hails from.

Apex leader of APC in Ikpoba-Okha LGA gave an assurance that he would always consult widely before taking decisions, while urging members of the party in the area to respect their leaders at all levels.

Seventeen governorship candidates are vying in Edo governorship poll, to elect the politician that will succeed PDP’s Governor Godwin Obaseki on November 12 this year, but the real contenders are APC’s Senator Monday Okpebholo, PDP’s Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and Labour Party’s (LP’s) Olumide Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), with the 14 others seen as pretenders.
