  • Meet 10 Edo APC Gov aspirants

Meet 10 Edo APC Gov aspirants

Two people have withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship direct primary election holding today.

They are Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Chief Lucky Imasuen.

While Ize-Iyamu withdrew from the race on Friday, Imasuen’s withdrawal letter was publicised on Saturday morning.

Twenty -nine aspirants initially indicated interest in contesting for the ticket but some dropped their ambitions. This left the party’s National Gubernatorial Aspirants Screening Committee, led by Prof Taoheed Adedoja to clear 12 aspirants for the primary.

Here is a list of those still in the race:

    Prof Oserheimen Osunbor

Prof Osunbor from Iruekpen, Edo Central is no doubt one of the most experienced aspirants of the party, having been in the Senate for eight years before he was elected Governor in 2007.

He was Governor for 18 months before the court sacked him. Pundits say he has the legislative and executive experience and capacity to navigate but may lack the financial muscle to prosecute elections.

    Charles Airhiavbere

Airhiavbere is a retired chief accountant of the Nigerian Army. The immediate past executive Director Finance and Administration of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) contested the governorship election in 2012 but lost to Oshiomhole.

    Prince Clem Agba

Prince Agba from Uzanu, Etsako East Local Government Area, was the Minister of Budget and National Planning under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was a commissioner during the eight years of Governor Adams Oshiomhole. Pundits said he has experience, capacity and goodwill, having worked under Oshiomhole and Buhari for 12 years.

    Dekeri Anamero

Anamero is a member of the House of Representatives for Etsako federal constituency. He is a successful businessman and a philanthropist who has impacted the people through his foundation.

    Dr Ernest Umakhihe Afolabi

Dr Afolabi is among the last aspirants to join the race on the APC platform. He is the immediate past Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Umakhihe joined the race with a promise of fresh hope. But it is speculated his district may work against him as the party is said to be considering aspirants from Edo South and Edo Central.

    Dennis Idahosa

Idahosa, from the Edo South Senatorial district, is a two-time member of the House of Representatives for Ovia federal constituency. He is believed to have the backing of some APC stakeholders in the state. Pundits said winning the House of Reps and State Assembly for the APC gave him an edge over other aspirants and could work in his favour.

    Sen Monday Okpebholo

Okpebholo, also known as Akpakomiza, is the senator representing Edo Central District. He is the first politician to dethrone the PDP in Edo Central district by defeating former Senator Clifford Ordia. He is believed to be in the good books of party leaders in the State.

    David Imuse

Imuse is a retired army officer and the immediate state chairman of the APC. One of his major weaknesses was that under his tenure as APC chairman, the party went into slumber and couldn’t provide vibrant opposition.

    Dr Blessing Agbohmere

He is the immediate past zonal organising secretary (South-South) and from Senator Oshiomhole’s district. He is a young politician and many believe he is in the race to test his popularity.

    Gideon Ikhine

Ikhine is from Esan West Local Government. He was the PDP Director- General for the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki in 2020 when he left the APC. Gideon decamped to the APC last year.

  • Edo APC suspends lawmaker-elect

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State has affirmed the suspension of the Edo State House of Assembly member-elect, Hon. Washington Osifo.

The Chairman, Johnson Omoruyi, affirmed the suspension during an interview yesterday.

According to him, Osifo’s suspension followed his refusal to heed warnings that he should follow the path of honour and present himself for inauguration as a member of the House of Assembly.

He said: “He should know why we voted him into power. He should tell us if he has issues bothering him so the party can resolve them and ensure a seamless relationship between the governor and the local government.”

The Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ogbewe, said while the suspension lasts, the door is open for Osifo to have a rethink and he could be accepted back into the party.

Osifo is among the 13 members-elect of the House of Assembly yet to be inaugurated.

  • Edo APC: Of internal sabotage and integrity deficit

There are extraordinary moments in the annals of human affairs when history irresistibly beckons on individuals particularly those who have emerged through various circumstances as societal leaders to stand up gallantly for the honour of service. Unfortunately, not everyone with the leadership appellation has the capacity to comprehensively understand the obligations that they must fulfil at such times. Perhaps the grave shortcomings of these supposed leaders in epic moments are resultant from the fact that their emergence into prominence was not through genuine uncorrupted political and social metamorphosis. Indeed, the series of treacherous and undignified actions by the odious specie of leaders whose conduct is under examination calls the sociological and political pedigree of such persons to serious question.

Although, it must be understood that the mostly impalpable jewel and definition of human character that the Benin will call UYI is not an equal endowment of every leader. The word ‘’uyi’’ instigates the broad connotation and denotation of the innateness of unselfish dignity, a sense of unyielding pride in collective history, approximate puritanical abnegation for traitorous and treacherous conduct and the tendency for boldness and heroism. These are the pristine hallmarks of the Benin person before and now in the 21st Century.

Looking from a justifiable proud angle of history, it seems that some of the current alleged Edo South APC leaders are not cognizant of the fact that it has taken Benin people almost 40 years after Samuel Ogbemudia to produce another performing and endearing governor in the person of Godwin Obaseki. Perhaps the group of Edo South self-acclaimed leaders, who engaged in unpardonable betrayal and acts of internal sabotage and deliberately plotting the defeat of APC in Edo South during the presidential and national elections, were just incapable of responding to the critical obligations of the moment. The pack of the fake Edo South APC chieftains were so lily –livered and so lacking in the tradition of honour for the Benin model character to stand out boldly and let the APC know that they were at war with the party. Rather they cowardly hibernated and plotted to surreptitiously commit suicide by exploding the electoral fortunes of the party to which they publicly pledged loyalty.

Most of the disgruntled Edo South APC leaders who were engaged in this infamy of internal sabotage during that election were not bold enough, for fear of opprobrium, to publicly come out against the popular governor that they sought to disgrace by working for the PDP in the presidential and general elections. Of course Governor Obaseki swept the political midgets parading as heavyweights out of the way to secure the entire 24 seats in the consequent House of Assembly election. But what is this coterie of the traitors and saboteurs seeking?

The hallucinatory dream of the dissenting gang is to deny Obaseki a second term. And the hidden but true reason for their nefarious action is that Obaseki has adhered to the principle of placing more emphasis on services to the citizenry and less of patronage to the cabal of insatiable party leaders. Their real anger is that Obaseki has removed the feeding basin from the decadent arena of the festival of vultures. The resources that were previously channelled into the pockets of such leaders is now invested by Governor Obaseki in infrastructure for the public good of Edo citizenry.

Quite regrettable is the fact that the same kind of Benin sons who are engineering these diabolical plots against Obaseki are of similar breed with those that gyrated with heads upside down in the theatrical frenzy to secure a second term for Obaseki’s predecessor. But now that it is the turn of someone from the Bini bloodline, the acidic venom of self-hatred has risen in these traitors with the self-destructive gene to wreck the endearing legacy of Godwin Obaseki. But these surreptitious machinations will collapse on the heads of their sinister architects and their dreams will turn to nightmare. One must recall how some similarly traitorous Benin characters initially made the beloved ex-Governor Ogbemudia vulnerable to the point of being subjected to disgraceful treatment by a succeeding administration.  The cast of soulless masquerades who are now plotting to set Edo State back and minimize Benin’s prestige in the chronicle of governance of the region are not different from those who encouraged the humiliation of Ogbemudia by outsiders and attempting to diminish his legacy in our history.

How else can one explain what could be described as the parliament of chickens said to have been recently convened by a woefully failed former commissioner for justice in Edo State. Barrister Idahagbon, whose tenure as the state’s Attorney General is often described as the weakest most unproductive by truly learned professional, was said to have initiated a meeting aimed at further plotting a gang up against the progressive and widely acclaimed achieving governor.

The attendants list at Idahagbon’s meeting unambiguously indicate the level of desperation that the sponsors of the likes of Idahagbon have sunk. Some of the alleged major heavy weights like Samson Osagie and Mathew Ehigie who were reportedly at the meeting are literally politicians with zero electoral value. What an act of grave human frailty that Samson Osagie, a village primary school teacher, will so quickly forget how without any merit whatsoever, he fortuitously rose and got elevated to enjoy the privileges he has today. I happen to know many dignified school teachers from the rural areas of our state, some of them who have equally risen to positions of high political authority but never abandoned the core values of the venerable profession from which they began public service.  The late entrepreneurial icon from Egba in Uhunmwonde local government area who initially elevated Samson Osagie will be shocked to look out from his eternal rest and see the destructive role that Samson Osagie is now playing in the public arena. The Idahagbon’s convened meeting begins to assume the picture of a tragic comedy as it was reported that the forum was also attended by two infamous political thugs in Benin. What were these two condemnable purveyors of violence, just Agberos, expected to contribute in terms of ideas if this was a serious meeting?

This is not the vision of the progressive and people-oriented party that Obaseki and the overwhelming majority of Edo people want to build. Fortunately, some credible and visionary Benin political leaders are offering a more proper response to the historic agenda before our people. Very noteworthy in this regard is the recent meeting of political leaders that was convened by a foremost APC chieftain in Edo State, Charles Idahosa. The meeting very clearly defined the popular acceptable path for our people.  There is indeed a strange hubris to the conduct of a man like Idahagbon.

From giant strides in education reforms to evolving Edo State into an economic power house of the South-south region, the improvement in the welfare of workers and pensioners to the massive investment in road infrastructure and expansion of opportunities for youths’ employment, Governor Obaseki has justifiably earned the approval and confidence of the vast Edo electorate far above the dwindling horizon of those who attended the recent parliament of chickens with no concrete resolution. The clock of history is ticking with ominous repercussion for those who acclaim themselves and accept the responsibilities of leadership – there will undoubtedly be consequences for the historical positions that we take as Edo the 2020 year of decision. Ultimately, I hope that APC leaders of Edo South extraction will display a modicum of the honour and courage for which our ancestors were famed by boldly and publicly maintaining their stance instead of hibernating in the crumbling silos of traitors and saboteurs.

  • Dep Senate President: Delta, Edo APC in Diaspora endorse Omo-Agege

As the 9th Senate Assembly moves towards electing new officers to pilot the affairs of the Red Chamber, members of the All Progressive Congress in Delta, Edo in Diaspora have endorsed Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege for the position of the Deputy Senate President.

They have also appealed to the leadership of the party to do the needful and present Barr. Ovie Omo-Agege as consensus candidate for the Deputy Senate President since the party has, in its wisdom, zoned the position to South-south region.

In a statement by the Delta, Edo states Coordinators, APC in Diaspora, Princely Ovakpo, representing Urhobo, Anioma, ljaws, and others and Nosa Obaobowha, representing the Binis, Ishan, Akoko-Edo, Ugbogi and others, said supporting Omo-Agege will enhance robust relationship between the legislature and the executive.

They said, “APC should look beyond the ordinary and allow a fearless and articulated lawmaker who knows the workings of the legislative business and won’t concede to opposition be given a responsibility such as the Deputy Senate President and not someone who can’t defend his party.

“So, we are calling on Mr. President and the party leadership to grant their request by ensuring Omo-Agege is given the opportunity to serve as the Deputy Senate President for a peaceful and sustainable leadership. This is our request after the victory of our leader, President Buhari.

“Omo-Agege has been tested and confirmed as one of the loyalists of the President-Elect, so nominating such a person to work with the Senate President, the president can go and sleep with his two eyes closed considering how he has fought severally to defend the pre-election electoral law.

“We have no doubt that if he is given the privilege to serve, he will build a bridge between the legislature and the executive with a robust relationship that will bring in rapid development across the country, hence there is this call on the party leadership to give him the room to serve.

“We quite know that making him the Deputy Senate President, militancy will be a thing of the past; having a Niger-Deltan, Omo-Agege there will ensure their activities are brought to the barest minimum since the Deputy Senate President is one of their own,” they said.

  • How Obaseki averted doom for Edo APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the presidential and National Assembly elections in Edo State. But, Governor Godwin Obaseki rose swiftly to abort the plan of the main opposition party to win majority of seats in the House of Assembly elections, reports Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State is in a celebration mood. It has broken an all time record in electoral contest in the just concluded House of Assembly polls held on March 9 by winning all the 24 seats in the House. For the first time in the history of the state, the House of Assembly would not be having a Minority Leader.

Basking in the euphoria of its victory in the February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had called on Edo people to repeat the feat in the House of Assembly elections by giving the ruling APC a bloody nose. The APC has lost the presidential election by polling 267,842 against the 275,691 scored by the PDP.

The victory of the PDP, especially in Edo South where Governor Godwin Obaseki  and Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, hail from, was a big blow to the APC. It was a shock to see a sitting governor losing in his senatorial and House of Representatives seats to the opposition.

In Edo Central, the PDP retained its political prowess, winning the senatorial and the House of Representatives seats.

After the presidential election, Edo APC returned to the drawing board to strategise on how to prevent the PDP from winning majority seats in the Assembly. The APC wanted to avoid a repeat of what former Governor Adams Oshiomhole suffered in the hands of a PDP-dominated Assembly.

Sources in the ruling APC said factors responsible for the electoral defeat were identified. The factors included sabotage on the part of some party leaders, hate speech against President Mohammadu Buhari by some Christian leaders, lack of voter’s education, proper sensitisation of the people on the achievements of Obaseki and the need for a cooperative Assembly.

Before the March 9 election, Obaseki held a strategic meeting with party leaders in Oredo where he released the mobilisation fund. Source at the meeting the sum of N40m could not be accounted for. Some youths at the meeting who were shortchanged were said to have been enraged that the leaders could shortchanged them. It was revealed that some leaders did not use prescribed party agents, but opted for family members.

A source at the meeting said Obaseki challenged the affected leaders to reveal what he gave to them.

According to the source: “We were shocked when Obaseki started talking. He revealed so many things. He said he was shocked how the leaders sabotaged his efforts. Obaseki asked them if it were his re-election, that is how he would have lost.

“The governor spoke to a point that he threw away the microphone. None of the leaders utter any word in defence. He has said he would deal with them.

“We are happy that the Governor set up a 25-man team to work with him for the purpose of the House of Assembly election this Saturday.”

Obaseki further met with  stakeholders, including the Igbo Traders Union, where he explained to them why they should not support the PDP to have majority in the Assembly.

Unlike before the presidential election when Obaseki decided not to campaign with his achievements, he recorded several speeches which were relayed on radio, television and social media where he talked about the need to continue with projects like roads, Bénin River Port, Industrial Park and several others.

The APC selected new party agents and trained them on the proper way to vote, with a view to avoiding voids votes as was experienced in the Presidential election.

On March 9, there was voters apathy in some areas while other areas witnessed huge turnouts of voters. Agents of the APC were more vigilant as they resisted any attempt.

In Edo Central where the APC had found it difficult to win, the party won all the seats for the first since 1999.

APC candidates that emerged are Chris Okaeben (Oredo West), Crosby Eribo (Egnr) Henry Okhuarobo (Ikpoba-Okha) Roland Asoro (Orhionmwon West) Nosayaba Okunbor (Orhionmwon East) Osaro Obazee (Oredo East) Washington Osifo (Uhunmwode) Ugiagbe Dumez (Ovia North East 1) Vincent Uwadiae (Ovia North East 11) Sunday Aghedo (Ovia South West) Francis Okiye (Esan North East 1) Emmanuel Okoduwa (Esan North East 11) Victor Edoror (Esan Central) Sunday Ojiezele (Esan South East) Marcus Onobun (Esan West) Ephraim Aluebhosele (Igueben) Ganiyu Audu (Estako West 1) and Aliyu Oshiomhole (Estako West 11).

Others were Emmanuel Agbaje (Akoko-Edo 11) Yekini Idaiye (Akoko-Edo 11) Eric Okaka (Owan East) Micheal Ohio-Ezo(Owan West) Oshoma Ahmed (Estako Central) Kingsley Ugabi (Estako East).

The Secretary to Government,  Osarodion Ogie, said the results showed President Buhari won in the state, if some APC votes were not cancelled or voided.

Ogie said the PDP has been decimated, adding that it cannot be victorious in any election in the state.

He said: “We saw Obaseki’s capacity for annihilating the opposition during the last local government election in which all the 18 candidates of the All Progressives Congress triumphed in the state.

“With all the 24 House of Assembly seats in our kitty, we are determined as a party, to put our best foot forward in the gubernatorial election, come 2020. The rising profile of our party under Obaseki is phenomenal, and Edo people have spoken that they appreciate his people-focused policies and programmes.”

Obaseki thanked the voters for coming out en masse to vote for candidates of the APC. He said he was delighted by the enthusiasm and maturity exhibited by voters across the state while casting their ballots.

He said: “My dear good people of Edo State, I thank you immensely for the massive votes you gave to candidates of my party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Saturday March 9, House of Assembly election in the state.”

“With this overwhelming endorsement of my party and my administration, my government is now turbocharged and fired up to exceed the expectations of the millions of Edo people and residents who reaffirmed their faith in our developmental programmes and policies at the polls on Saturday.

“We campaigned vigorously and impressed it on our people that a vote for the APC House of Assembly candidates, is a vote for me to continue and complete all ongoing projects in every sector of the state.

“Thankfully, this message resonated well with our people and you have charged us to continue with all our ongoing reforms in Edo State. We will continue to create more jobs, construct more roads, renew our education and healthcare system, invest more in the security of life and property, and industrialise Edo State, in our collective quest to actualise the Edo of our dreams.

“I assure you that we will not take for granted this loud vote of confidence in my administration. I will continue to put you, our people first, in all our development plans.”

  • APC leaders adopt Obaseki as sole candidate for 2020 Edo election

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oredo Local Government Area has adopted Governor Godwin Obaseki as their sole candidate in the 2020 gubernatorial election in the state, owing to the governor’s sterling performance and inclusive governance style.

The decision was reached at an expanded meeting of the leaders of Oredo LGA APC, held on March 31, in Benin City, which was attended by party leaders, who unanimously endorsed Governor Obaseki’s candidature.

They also congratulated the party’s National Chairman and Leader, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, on his effective leadership and victory at the 2019 Presidential election, and passed a vote of implicit confidence on his leadership.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, Oredo LGA chapter of the APC, Hon. Godwill Alabi and his Secretary, Hon. Magdalene Isekhure, the party leadership said those who attended the meeting and endorsed Governor Obaseki’s candidacy include the Local Government Executive, Councilors, Ward Chairmen and leaders from the twelve (12) wards in the LGA.

The meeting was attended by over 90 party members and leaders, including the Special Adviser to Edo State Governor on Political and Community Matters, Chief Osaro Idah; Secretary, Edo State Chapter of the APC, Mr. Lawrence Okah; Chairman, Oredo LGA, Hon. Jenkins Osunde and Edo APC Youth Leader, Hon. Valentine Asuen, among others.

According to them, “Considering the pace of development in different sectors of the state from infrastructure to education, industrialization, civil service and judicial reforms, enterprise development, prompt payment of pensioners and civil servants’ emoluments, among others, we are convinced beyond doubt that the only way to sustain the current rapid growth trajectory is to ensure that Governor Obaseki continues as governor of the state after the expiration of his first four-year term.

“We, therefore, with full sense of responsibility, call on him to run for 2nd term and hereby adopt Governor Godwin Obaseki as our sole candidate in the coming 2020 governorship election in the state.”

The leaders said Governor Obaseki has made them proud as Edo people, noting “At the moment, among states in the Federation, Edo State stands out in all development spheres, heads and shoulders above states that are far more privileged than us in terms of federal allocation and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

“As the saying goes, the reward for hard work is more work, we, therefore, urge Governor Obaseki to heed our call to take on the responsibility of governing the state for another four years, beginning from 2020.”

They added, “We also assure, as leaders of the party in Oredo, of our readiness to pull all our resources together to ensure that Governor Obaseki not only fly the flag of the party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election, but also emerge as governor for a second term.”

Other party members at the meeting include Barr (Mrs) Faith I. Osaze, Otabor Vincent, Inneh Bright, Prince Enikaro Eweka, Mr. Ojo Oni, Kingsley Erhunwunse, Dr. Sam Osato Igbinoba, Hon. Johnson Osemwengie Elema, Hon. Efosa Ogiamien and Hon. Enabulele Eweka, among others.

  • Polls: Court sacks Edo APC candidate

The Federal High Court sitting in Benin City has sacked Mr. Osaro Obaze as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Oredo East Constituency in the House of Assembly election scheduled to hold this Saturday.

Justice Damilola Ajayi in his ruling upheld Mr. Ekhosuehi Aiguobahi as the legitimate candidate of the APC.

Ekhosuehi has filed the case asking the court to name him as the duly elected candidate of the APC for Oredo East Constituency.

Justice Ajayi ruled that Ekhosuehi won last year primary of the party and therefore remains the rightful candidate for the March 9 election.

Reacting to the judgment, Obaze said he was unfazed by the court judgment as he has put machinery in motion to appeal the decision.

He said he remained the party’s candidate for the election.

“My supporters should come out enmasse to vote for me on Saturday. I have the INEC form which was given to me as the candidate who won the primary. They should remain calm.”

Edo State spokesman of the APC, Mr. Chris Azebamwan, said Obaze remained the party’s candidate for the constituency.

“We hereby re-affirm Obaze as the candidate of the APC in Oredo East Constituency, and hereby reassure our teeming supporters to keep faith and remain steadfast. The leadership of our great party will do everything necessary, and explore all legal options to ensure that the mandate which we collectively gave Obaze to fly our flag in the election of Saturday, March 9 remains inviolate.”
