Edo traditional rulers ask Adjoto to vacate seat

The days of Hon Kabiru Adjoto as the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly may be numbered as traditional rulers in the state have insisted that a lawmaker from Edo Central senatorial district must be made Speaker for the purpose of equity and justice.

Hon Adjoto who hails from the same senatorial district with the Deputy Governor, Hon Philip Shaibu, emerged Speaker last week after the impeachment of Hon Justin Okonoboh, a lawmaker from Edo Central.

The traditional rulers spoke yesterday at a summit of Edo North and Edo Central traditional rulers held at Auchi, headquarters of Estako West local government area.

Otaru of Auchi, HRH Alhaji Aliru Momoh, Ikelebe III, who addressed journalist at the end of the summit, said they supported comments of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewaure II, who described the action of the lawmakers as an act of barbarism and hooliganism.

The Otaru noted that the power balancing factor in the state has been displaced with the removal of Okonoboh as Speaker.

His words, “We are meeting the Oba. We will send delegation to the Benin Monarch to inform him that we support him on his comments as regards what happened at the Edo State House of Assembly.

“We feel that equity, justice must prevail. Edo Central must have somebody who should be the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly. We are going to see what we can do to bring justice to the state over that matter. A balancing factor has to be made which was in place. That has been displaced and it is not a good thing for us if we have to navigate justice.”

On the call for restructuring by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Otaru stated that they resolved that Nigeria does not need restructuring but justice and restructuring of the heart.

He said there would no clamour for restructuring if every Nigerian were treated equally.

His words, “We felt that restructuring is nothing to do other than justice. Justice has no boundary. Everybody has to be treated equally. We appeal that everybody has to restructure their heart to do the good thing.

“Restructuring is not the problem of this country but the restructuring of our heart to the belief that we are all one nation. If we have good roads, water, railways, nobody will be talking about restructuring because the poor and the rich will have an environment that provides for all. The structure of wages and salaries is lopsided. We feel that the salary of the top should reduce and the bottom should rise. There should be a living wage for the low income earners.”

I’ve sold my official vehicle, ex-Speaker tells Edo Assembly

Immediate past Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Elisabeth Ativie, has told the new leadership of the Assembly that she has sold one of the official vehicles, a Lexus Jeep 2016 model, given to her when she was Speaker.

Hon Ativie served as Speaker for 84 days after which she stepped down for Justin Okonoboh to emerge as Speaker for the purpose of balance of power among the three Senatorial districts.

She was made Deputy Speaker to Okonoboh but both of them were violently impeached on Monday by 16 lawmakers.

In a letter dated August 16 and signed by the Clerk of the Assembly, James Omoataman, Hon Ativie was asked to return the official vehicles allocated to her as a Deputy Speaker.

The letter listed the vehicles to include one Prado Jeep, two Hilux vans, and one Lexus Jeep 2016 model.

In her reply through her Counsel, Olayiwola Afolabi, Hon Ativie said she has registered the vehicles in her name and that she acted as bonafide owner of the vehicles to sell one of them.

Hon Ativie said the vehicles were permanently given to her by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole as compensation for the sacrifices she made to step down for Okonoboh.

Ativie urged the Clerk of the Assembly to advice the House leadership properly as the vehicles were no longer official vehicles of the Edo State House of Assembly.

She quoted part of the letter written by the former governor to read, I wish to convey “My compliments and recall the discussion between the leadership of the Edo State House of Assembly and the Executive branch on the geo -political stability of Edo State and the need to engender equity, fairness and sense of belonging amongst all sections and citizens of our dear state.

” Given the exceptional circumstances surrounding the issues and in an explicit acknowledgement of the enormous sacrifices you were required to make for the peace, security, stability and well-being of our beloved state, the official vehicles attached to the office of the Speaker are now yours ”

Everybody has accepted that a change of leadership has occurred, but it is not over yet. Talks are ongoing to address the issues,” Ojezua said.

He added that leadership change was not new in the legislature as the National Assembly has witnessed similar changes.

Edo State House of Assembly is to prune its workforce of 724 staff to a number to be decided by the state government.

It was gathered that the staff reduction would be carried out after a screening exercise.

A source said any affected staff will not be sacked or be deployed to other ministries.

The source said the decision to prune down the staff strength was due to pressure from Governor Godwin Obaseki that it was unacceptable for a 24-member assembly to be having 724 staff.

It was learnt the governor was also pressuring the judiciary to also embark of reforms by reducing its many redundant workforce.

Confirming the development, Governor Obaseki said the move was to reduce waste in governance.

Speaking while delivering a lecture at the annual lecture series of the Edo State Correspondent Chapel, Governor Obaseki said the ratio of the 24 lawmakers to the number of staff was too wide.

His words, “We don’t have control over the judiciary and legislature but we have been in active dialogue with them to ensure that they also start the process of reforming those in their institutions.

“They have been responsive. The House of Assembly has come to understanding and agreement that a 24-man Assembly cannot have a staff strength of 724. The ratio is too wide. They have decided to streamline the workforce so that those who are redundant can now be put into active use.

“One of the challenges we have is not the lack of resources, we have devolve a system where we waste so much. If we make a lot of savings, we can to what we want to do. How do we have more than 200 Hilux vans for various political actors and appointees when the entire police force don’t have that number of vehicles”.
