    Edo Assembly approves N200m house for Oshiomhole

    …Deputy gets N100m building 

     

     

    Edo State House of Assembly has amended the “2007 Pension Rights of the Governor and Deputy Governor Law” to provide a residential building worth N200million for the immediate past governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

     

    The amended also provided N100million worth of house to his deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu.

     

    Oshiomhole left office last Saturday after the end of his tenure.

     

    If the amended law is assented to by Governor Godwin Obaseki, the former governor and his deputy stand to enjoy the pension benefit of residential buildings worth N200 million and N100 million.

     

    The provision of the residential building was the only amendment to the law.

     

    Both the former governor and his deputy are to have the residential buildings worth N200 million and N100 million in any location of their choice in Nigeria.

     

    According to the bill with the subhead titled, “provision of a house” read thus; a house in a location of choice in Nigeria of the Governor provided that the total cost of building the house shall not be in excess of 200 million naira while 100 million naira for the deputy governor.

     

    Other benefits to be enjoyed by former governors in the state are, a pension for life at a rate equivalent to 100 percent of his last annual salary in addition to an officer not above salary grade level 12 as Special Assistant, a personal secretary not below grade level 10 who shall be selected by the former governors from the public service of Edo state.

     

    Former governors are also entitled to have two cooks, two armed policemen as security, three vehicles to be bought by the State Government and liable to be replaced every five years, three drivers who shall be selected by the former governor and paid by the state government as well as free medical treatment for the governor and his immediate family.

     

    Former deputy governors are entitled to 100 percent of their last annual salary as pension, a personal staff not above salary grade level 12 as Special Assistant, a personal secretary not below grade level 09 who shall be selected by the former deputy governor from the public service of the state, a cook, two policemen as security.

     

    Two vehicles bought by the state government and liable to be replaced every five years are to be provided, two drivers who shall be selected by former deputy governors and paid by the state government and free medical treatment for them and their immediate family.

    There was pandemonium at the Edo State House of Assembly Tuesday when thugs numbering about three hundred invaded the hallowed chamber shooting sporadically and in the process six persons were seriously wounded.

    Trouble started when Hon. Folly Ogedegbe the majority leader moved the motion for impeachment of the speaker, Hon. Victor Edoror and the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bright Osayande.

    The motion which was seconded by Hon. Gani Audu representing Etsako West 1 reads in parts, “We the underlisted and undersigned Honourable Members representing the various constituencies in the Edo State House of Assembly have on this day 3rd of May 2016 have resolved to impeach our speaker, Hon. Chief Victor Edoror Tiger and the Deputy Speaker Hon. Osayande for acts of gross misconduct.

    Speaker ex-tempo Hon. Patrick Iluobe was appointed to preside the business of the day where the new speaker, Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie representing Uhuwode was appointed and Dr. Joseph Okonoboh
    representing Igueben was appointed as Deputy Speaker.

    Immediately the new speaker was sworn in, the impeached speaker and his deputy walked into the chamber in company of the thugs shooting sporadically to scare people out of the chambers, in the process a lot of peoples sustained various gun short.

    Addressing journalists immediately after the fracas, the new speaker Hon. Mrs. Ativie said the members can no longer tolerate the greedy nature of the speaker.

    She said the impeached speaker has up to six different financial cases with the EFCC and the members cannot continue to allow such indecent person to lead the House.

    She therefore said that five member committee headed by Kabiru Adjoto representing Akoko-Edo 1 will investigate the financial recklessness of the impeached speaker from June 2015 till May 3rd.

    She said if found wanting at the end of the three months when the committee will submit their report he will be handed over to the appropriate authority.

    Also speaking, Hon. Adjoto Kabiru said the impeached speaker is violently corrupt who have flair for eating government money just the way the red mouth squirrel has mouth for palm kernel as it is eating one, it is looking at another one that is how Edoror is.

    “As it is today, Edoror has a lot of EFCC case hanging on his neck, you media men can go and verify this we cannot afford to have a speaker that is been investigated by the EFCC because of his corrupt nature. As earlier mentioned by our new speaker, Edoror has a corrupt tendency that cannot be mentioned by one, enough is enough, that is why sixteen members of the house today signed impeachment notice against him. As we speak today, both APC and PDP members in the House signed impeachment notice against him”.

    Sixteen members signed the impeachment notice that circulated to journalists immediately after the house proceedings.

    EDSIEC explains delay in Edo council polls

    Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has said that it could not conduct local council elections according to constitutional provisions because of the inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to update voter register in the state.

    The tenure of elected council official expires Thursday and lawmakers in the State House of Assembly have asked Heads of Local Government Administration to take over from the council bosses.

    A Commissioner in EDSIEC, Prof. Stanley Orobotor, stated the dilemma of the commission while briefing the lawmakers during plenary.

    The lawmakers has summoned members of EDSIEC to explain why local elections were not conducted three months to the expiration of the tenure of incumbent local council officials.

    Prof Orobator said, “We are fully aware of our responsibilities. We are waiting for INEC to update the voter register and put the card readers in good condition so that nobody will be left out. Some persons have reached the age of 18 and they should, be allowed to vote.”

    “These are the two things that have held us from conducting the local government election.”

    Speaker Victor Edoror, urged EDSIEC to liase with INEC to update the voter register with a view to conducting credible local elections in the state.

    Workers of Egor LG council protest non-payment of 13 months salaries, as chairmen tenure ends.

     

    Official activities are grounded at some local government Secretariat in Edo state  as workers  protested non-payment of their salaries spanning thirteen months.

     

    The tenure of local government chairmen and councillors will end on Friday 22nd April, 2016.

     

    Our reporter who visited some of councils Secretariat quoted the workers as saying that,the chairmen has engaged in looting of councils properties and the little change remaining in the pulse.

     

    They lamented that even when council workers couldn’t get money for Christmas, new year and Easter celebration, some of the chairmen were busy organizing parties, and build mansion upon mansion to the detriment of their arrears of salaries that are  yet to be paid.

     

    Meanwhile, the Edo state House of Assembly has directed the council chairmen across the eighteen local government to hand over power to their Head of Service latest on Thursday 21st April, 2016.

     

    Workers in the council including political appointees lamented the inability of the chairmen to pay their claims, saying that records in their various accounts department showed that the claims have been collected by the chairmen.

     

    According to staff of Ikpoba-Okha , who doesn’t want his name in print said, “the chairmen collected all their salaries to day, their allowances, claims including other workers claims, their imprest account, and their security votes “.
