Edo: PDP members seek Aihiavbere’s expulsion from party

Some members of the People’s Democratic Party in Edo State on Friday called on the party leadership to expel Major-General Charles Airhiavbere from the party.

Airhiavbere was the PDP candidate in the July 14, 2012 gubernatorial election in the state.

The party members said they sought the expulsion of Airhiavbere from the party for bringing the PDP into disrepute by challenging the outcome of the election.

The PDP members spoke at a press conference in Benin City shortly after the Supreme Court upheld the appeal of Governor Adams Oshiomhole against the ruling of a Court of Appeal.

They said Airhiavbere’s decision to contest the result of the gubernatorial election in the state at the tribunal, against the decision of the party hierarchy has damaged the party’s reputation.

Spokesman of the PDP stakeholders, Chief Aisulimhen Ighodaro said Airhiavbere’s unilateral decision to go to court was at variance with that of the party at the national and state levels.

Ighodaro noted that such decision showed that Airhiavbere was not a party man and that “he holds the PDP in contempt and is on a personal voyage to fulfill his inordinate ambition.”

His words: “The decision by the his running mate, Hon Johnson Abolagba is not only commendable, but it shows that he is a proper, well-tutored and real politician who regards the party as supreme.

“Airhiavbere’s ambition, which has now been truncated by the decision of the Supreme Court, has further damaged the fabrics of our party, the PDP, which had earlier been badly tainted by his shameful loss to the opposition candidate at the July 14 polls,

“It is our opinion that Charles Airhiavbere be immediately expelled from our great party, the PDP to serve as a deterrence to others and show to the world that ours is a disciplined party.

Rights activist: justice will prevail in Edo

A  social critic, Donald Inwalomhe, has said that justice will prevail at the tribunal hearing petition on the last year’s governorship election in Edo State.

He said the comments of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate,Major-General Charles Airhiavbere, and other PDP chieftains in the media would not change the course of justice.

Inwalomhe said the judiciary will never neglect the path of justice in the state.

In a statement, the activist warned agsint rumour peddling, urging hired writers to realise that the partisan interests they were defending may not be in the interest of democracy. He maintained that PDP cannot get victory that has eluded it through the ballot box on the pages of newspapers. He said the unguarded comments may be subjudice.

Inwalomhe said that Governor Adams Oshiomhole was the peoples’ choice, advising the PDP to prepare for future elections.

He added: “My question is this, when Airhiavbere and Afejuku knew Oshiomhole wasn’t qualified for the election, why did he not challenge him at the initial stage at the High Court, so as not to allow INEC waste it’s funds conducting the elections in July 14, 2012.

“Section 31of the Electoral Act 2006, it empowers Airhiavbere and his co-travelers to challenge Oshiomhole in a High Court. What stopped them?

“In line with the same section as above, INEC verification committee of candidates’ particulars came to Benin City to do their job, where was Airhiavbere? What stopped him from raising this issue of certificate? What prevented him from proceeding to court? The law is clear and unambiguous on these issues.

“Oshiomhole presented his Primary School testimonial, Modern School Certificate, Diploma certificate from Ruskin, NIPPS and Zaria and was validated by Prof. Agbebaku at the tribunal when he testified that he was Oshiomhole’s classmate, what else does the PDP candidate want?”

My consolation is that they are, however, convinced that Oshiomhole won the election but abandoned those contestation in court for certificate issue. Again, they got it all wrong; they should seek redress at the normal courts.

I want to advise Airhiavbere and his co-travelers such as Afejuku, Aigbekan, Osaze Ijesuorobo among others to sheath their sword and allow the issues presented at the Tribunal to be properly ventilated before sponsoring commentators, political columnists, and armed-chair writers. Do we agree?

Edo: Why Airhiavbere can’t challenge my qualification – Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday explained why the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Charles Airhiavbere cannot challenge his educational qualification.

Oshiomhole said Airhiavbere lost the opportunity to do because it is not contained as a ground in his (Airhiavbere) petition against his victory.

Since he did not specifically raise the issue, the governor said the apex court should not allow the petitioner to ambush him by raising the issue in his argument.

Oshiomhole spoke through his legal team led by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) at the hearing of his appeal against the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Benin, Edo, which ordered fresh hearing of Airhiavbere’s petition.

On the governor’s legal team are Ricky Tarfa (SAN), Niyi Akintola (SAN), Femi Falana (SAN), Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN).

Adopting his written address, Olanipekun said there was no basis for the judgment of the Court of Appeal.

According to him, the petitioner grounded his petition on corrupt practice and none compliance with the Electoral Act 2010, but not on Oshiomhole’s non qualification.

Besides, he berated the petitioner/respondent for asking the tribunal to declare him as the winner of the election after claiming that the election was invalid.

He wondered why Airhiavbere wants to benefit from an exercise he claimed was fraudulent.

Olanipekun pointed out that the Respondent is challenging results in only five of the 18 local governments.

Responding, counsel to Airhiavbere, Chief Efe Akpofure (SAN) asked the court to dismiss the appeal and affirm the judgment of the lower court.

    Edo faults U.S on advisory

    … Says state is safe

The Edo State Government on Thursday faulted the travel advisory of the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the United States Department of State and declared that the state is safe.

It claimed that Edo State is the safest in the South-South.

The state made the clarifications in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere.

The state said it was unbelievable that the advisory left out some states which had been recording violent crimes on daily basis.

The statement said: “Our attention has been drawn to a travel advisory issued by the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the United States Department of State which listed Edo State as unsafe for visitors during this holiday season.

“We find it laughable that Edo State is on the list, and this might suggest that the U.S Department of State is not in tune with events in Nigeria.

“While we are unclear on the parameters used by the Department of State, we however make bold to state, and this can be confirmed from the security agencies in the country, that Edo State is the safest in the South-South region of Nigeria and one of the safest in the country.

“It beats the imagination of discerning minds that while some states which record violent crimes on a daily basis in the country are excluded from the list, Edo State which has been commended by all, including the World Bank which, through its Country Director, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly said: “Edo State’s social indicators are above the national average” and which had earlier been confirmed by her predecessor, Mr. Onno Ruhl, who said, “Edo State is one of the states in Nigeria where the willingness to change is the fastest in Nigeria”, is included in the offensive U.S list.

“Those who come to equity must do so with clean hands. If the U.S Department of State could include Edo in its advisory list, then it should also issue a travel warning to citizens of the world to avoid Connecticut where 20 innocent Elementary School Students and six of their teachers were cut down in the confines of their classrooms just two weeks ago,

“It would do good to also issue a travel advisory to people of the World on New Jersey which, according to the Cable News network (CNN) “has already suffered 65 violent deaths in 2012” and on Philadelphia where the “the year-to-date total of homicides is 322. Last year, 324 were killed.”

The statement added that Governor Adams Oshiomhole had done much to improve the security situation in the state than any government in the country.

Govt takes stock of massive attacks on four banks, others

Auchi, the Edo North town under gunmen’s bombardment on Monday night recovered yesterday to start taking stock of the sudden attack that left 15 residents dead.

Shattered windows and doors, smashed ATM machines and broken walls were all that was left at the four banks attacked by the brigands.

Businesses were paralysed as security men cordoned off the roads leading to the town.

Three soldiers were said to be among the dead, but the police denied this.

To Mr. Rasaq Momoh, the lawmaker representing Etsako West II in the Edo State House of Assembly, the incident was a “terrorist attack”.

“I don’t believe it was armed robbery. This is a terrorist attack,” he said of the siege which began at about 6.25p.m.

Edo State Deputy Governor Pius Odubu visited the scene of the attacks and urged the police to upgrade the quality of their arms.

The gunmen attacked banks, residential houses and a police station.

Six bodies were seen at Omeme Bridge. Villagers said they were motorcycle operators who ran into the escaping bandits.

A driver with Bob Izua Motors and a motorcyclist were shot on Jattu road. Others were said to have been hit by stray bullets. Many others were injured.

The Zonal Medical Director of the Central Hospital, Dr. Jude Omoregie, said bodies were brought in to the hospital.

He said bombings made it impossible to evacuate the injured for urgent medical attention.

Omoregie said of the people brought to the hospital, one died early yesterday. He said the dead was yet to identified the dead person.

He said a motorcyclist and his passenger were shot, adding that the motorcyclist died on the spot. The passenger, a yam seller, survived.

He said most of those caught in the crossfire were poor people who were hit by stray bullets.

One of the victims, Khadijat Musa, said she was shot at on Policed Station road.

She said: “I saw them and greeted them but they still shot at us.”

She has a bullet lodged inside her body.

Six others were admitted at the JMJ Hospital.

A nurse at the hospital, Mrs. Juliana Aghogho, said she and her son ran into the robbers who asked her to lie on the ground.

She said they took her vehicle away.

Acting Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hurdi said seven people died. According to him, two policemen were shot in the leg. He denied the killing of any soldier.

Hurdi said no policeman was killed during the attack.

Deputy Governor Obudu said the robbers were blood thirsty.

Speaking at the palace of the Otaru of Auchi, Alieru Momoh, Obudu urged Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubarkar to equip the Edo State police command with modern weapons.

“Edo State cannot be a safe haven for criminals. We will spare no effort in ensuring that they are caught,” he said.

Momoh said the attackers were looking for money to finance their activities.

Rasaq, who visited the injured in the hospitals, offered to offset Khadijat’s medical bills.

He said: “They are out to raise fund for their organisation. The attacks started simultaneously at different places. It was centrally coordinated.”

Travellers plying the Benin-Auchi-Abuja expressroad were stranded as the road was sealed off by security operatives.

Many of the passengers alighted from their vehicles and took naps under trees. Others trekked into Auchi from the outskirt.

Shops, hotels and banks were under shut. Many residents were on the streets to see the destruction wreaked by the attackers.

Residents said the bandits were more than 100 and were stationed around the community. They said the attacks were carried out simultaneously on various targets.

Some of the bandits were said to be riding on motorcycles, shooting sporadically. Some were said to be on buses driving through the streets. The bandits were reportedly stationed in all junctions leading to the town.

At the Auchi Police Station, three buildings were bombed and destroyed. The Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), vehicles and motorcycles were burnt.

A police source said the attack took them by surprise as they were exchanging duty at the time the bandits struck.

The source said: “Some were praying while others were dropping their rifles. The weapons used by the bandits were more superior. Many of us ran away.”

A storey building on Warrake Road was also attacked by the bandits, according to residents, who said seven dynamites were thrown at the building but they exploded before reaching the building.

It was gathered that the bandits attacked the building to demobilise soldiers attached to the state’s security outfit, Operation Thunderstorm, who are said to be living there.

Mohammed, who lives in the building with his family, said the attack on the building began at about 6:30pm.

He said occupants were in fear as soldiers in the building engaged the bandits and repelled them.

The perimeter fence was pulled down by explosives. Two vehicles in the building were riddled with bullets.

The four banks attacked during the three-hour operation were GTB, Access Bank, First Bank and Ecobank.

Access bank workers were balancing their accounts when the first explosion blasted open their security door.

An official of the bank, who pleaded anonymity said they ran for cover, adding that no one was injured in the attack. The robbers gained access to the vault after threatening to kill those holding the key, it was learnt.

The attack on First Bank was massive, but the bandits could not get open the safe. An official said only two of them were left at the bank when the robbers attacked the security post with dynamites.

It was gathered that the bandits repeatedly threw explosives at the safe vault, which stood firm.

Some unexploded dynamites and explosives were found.

The bandits bombed a part of the GTB building and raided the Automated Teller Machines (ATM).

A woman, Iyabo Omon, whose shop is by the police station, said she thought it was an accident when the first explosion occurred.

She recounted: “I saw many of them carrying guns. I ran under the bed and one came to bang on my door. Suddenly, I heard them shoot a man. They took the chickens and other items I displayed for sale. We discovered that the man they shot was a driver with Bob Izua Motors.”

Another witness, Shaka Hamza, said he started hearing explosions at about 6:24pm and it lasted till after 9pm.

Shaka said he saw three bodies on Jattu road and a military’s body near Agip the filling station.

“I was about to go to the mosque when the shooting started. They attacked the command quarters at Warrake; nobody was killed in the bank robbery.”

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, collapsed on Thursday morning during the on-going hearing of the petition filed by Major-Charles Airhiavbere against the election of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Airhiavbere represented PDP in the July 14 governorship election in the state.

The man, who wore a white flowing brocade made a noise when the second witness called by Airhiavbere was about to start testifying at the tribunal.

Immediately he made the noise, he fell, hit his head hard on the floor and started bleeding.

Everybody sitting around him, including lawyers fled and stood afar, watching him.

While some attributed the fall to epileptic seizure, others said it was a spiritual attack.

It took several minutes before the man was placed in a police van and driven to the Central Hospital whose building is adjacent to the venue of the tribunal sitting.

The tribunal judges abruptly retired to their inner chambers and sitting was disrupted for about one hour.

Edo: Airhiavbere gets ultimatum to open case

Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has given Major-General Charles Airhiavbere till Friday to open his case for hearing.

Airhiavbere, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the July 14 governorship election in Edo State, is challenging the victory of Governor Adams Oshiomhole in the poll.

At the commencement of hearing of the matter on Wednesday, lead Counsel to Airhiavbere, Efe Akpofure said they could not start their case because of refusal by the Independent National Electoral Commission to give them certified true copies of registered voters as ordered by the tribunal.

Akpofure said they intend to use the documents to prove malpractices during the conduct of the election.

He urged the tribunal to make compelling order, directing INEC to produce the said documents and demanded for an adjournment to get the relevant documents.

Counsel to INEC, Robert Emukpero informed the tribunal that INEC has given the said documents to the petitioner since October.

He said Akpofure did not complain about non-receipt of the document when they met at the Court of Appeal.

Counsel to Governor Oshiomhole, Adeniyi Akintola said the petitioner has no reason not to start his case because the petitioner’s pleadings cut across 51 units in five local government areas of the state.

He said witnesses could be called from the available documents while they wait for other documents.

Akintola submitted that most of the petitioners’ dispositions have nothing to do with voters’ register.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Muazu Pindigi, told the petitioner and INEC to sort themselves out in the interest of justice.
