  • Police arrest ‘notorious’ kidnapper, others in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a man it described as a notorious kidnapper, Amacauley Ikhuakpogba.

The suspect was reportedly arrested at Iguobazuwa, headquarters of Ovia Southwest Local Government Area.

He was said to have been arrested during a routine stop-and-search.

Ikhuakpogba is said to have committed several kidnappings and robberies.

He was among 35 suspects the police paraded yesterday in Benin, the state capital.

The suspect told reporters that he carried out two kidnappings and eight robberies.

Ikhuakpogba said he collected N500,000 ransom from one of his victims.

Other suspects were said to have robbed, kidnapped, snatched cars and raped women.

A dropout from the Nigeria Military School, Hope Obasuyi, who had allegedly been posing as a soldier to residents, was also paraded.

The 27-year-old was arrested in Benin after a phone he allegedly stole was taken to a relative of the phone owner for unlocking.

The “soldier” said he used the extra military camouflage given to him to sew a uniform and pretended to be a soldier.

Obasuyi said he was a welder, adding that he sometimes used the uniform to get many facilities, especially mobile phones from people.

Items recovered from the suspects included five AK-47 rifles, 25 cut-to-size guns, four double-barrelled guns, four single-barrelled guns, three pump action guns, 52 live cartridges, three cars, one motorcycle and seven assorted mobile phones.

  • Groups partner to track Edo projects

A transparency advocacy group, BudgIT Nigeria, has partnered Omidyar Network to track capital projects listed in this year’s budget of the Edo State Government.

The group said it would use its “Tracka project” to ensure transparency in the state’s projects.

The partnership, according to BudgIT’s Lead Partner, Oluseun Onigbinde, will focus on 24 communities, where the capital projects are located.

He said the partnership would have community tracking teams.

The company’s lead partner said “Tracka” would work with stakeholders in the community and civil society organisations (CSOs) as partners.

BudgIT is working with Kaduna and Edo state governments to ensure transparency in their projects.

Onigbinde, in a statement in Abuja, said “Tracka” would enable the residents to own and track capital projects in their communities.

He said: “Considering the challenge of transparency in the country, the most effective method to reach the masses is through the implementation of capital projects. Lots of funds are allocated as capital expenditure; yet, some projects are left undone. The plan is to follow up with the communities/beneficiaries and facilitators of the project.

“The project will ensure feedback to citizens, using social media and also contact parliamentary, executive bodies and key institutions to close the feedback loop and aggregate feedback and build actionable intelligence for and from the institutions.

“As Nigerians, it is important that we ensure transparency and accountability regarding the use of funds.”

  • 55 parents pick 142 kids from Edo IDPs’ camp

55 parents pick 142 kids from Edo IDPs’ camp

Fifty-five parents yesterday identified and picked their 142 children from the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Uhogua, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The camp is being run by the International Christian Mission under Pastor Solomon Folorunsho.

Six of the parents only came to see their children and were not going back with them.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who hosted the families and their children to a dinner at the Edo Government House, said the Red Cross reunited the children with their parents.

Oshiomhole said the state was not rejecting them, adding that the children were happy to return to their families.

The governor assured that President Muhammadu Buhari would flush out Boko Haram in the Northeast.

He said noting could be compared to the warmth of living with one’s family.

Oshiomhole advised then IDPs to be free to live in any part of the country as a Nigerian and that the state government was prepared to make their stay comfortable.

Oshiomhole said the other 800 IDPs at the camp would be given necessary education and facilities.

Nahata Ayuba, who was at the camp for his four children, said he lives in Nasarawa State with his wife.

The elated father said he was farming in his new location in Nasarawa State.

He promised to return his children to the camp so that they could continue their education.

Amos Azawarha, 50, a farmer in Abuja, said he wanted his family to be together.

A woman, who identified herself aimply as Mrs. Daniel, said her husband was killed by Boko Haram insurgents.

The woman said she lived in Abuja with her brother, adding that she would leave with two of her children while three others would remain at the camp.

Pastor Folorunsho said he was happy that the state government reunited some of the affected families.

  • Edo’s $75m loan and mischief makers

SIR: Even the most acerbic critic of Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, the Edo State Governor, will hesitate in calling for his head over allegations by his political opponents that he fell short of expectations in providing development for the state.

Noticeably, the manner he generated funds for development and managed same attracted on-the-spot assessment visits by both local and international development-conscious organisations, including UNICEF, World Bank and agencies of the European Union. Without any difficulty, they passed a vote of confidence in his overall performance both in fiscal prudence and management of the state’s lean resources. Against this background, the World Bank  agreed to offer $150m soft loan facility to the state.

The loan is divided into two tranches of $75m each and tied to specific projects. Instructively, the state has collected the first $75m and has applied it as specified, hence the decision by the bank to approve the second tranche.

Unarguably, the judgment by the World Bank that the governor prudently applied the loan is the reason President Mohammadu Buhari did not hesitate in transmitting a letter to the National Assembly, requesting its approval for the second $75m. Unfortunately, however, it elicited hostile reaction from politically motivated mischief makers who ignored its inherent benefits for the state by projecting the assumption that the governor only requested for the facility for unscrupulous reasons, including claims that it will end up as dubious severance package for himself and officials of his administration, particularly now that his tenure is winding up.

But facts about the loan speak for themselves and they are verifiable. Only Lagos and Edo received approval from the global financial powerful for the soft loan of $150m tied to specific projects. Only Edo is applying for the second tranche for now having been certified to have prudently applied the first part to specified projects.

In any case, opponents of the facility seem to forget that the World Bank is never known to giving out frivolous loans. Indeed, the widely respected international financial institute is globally reputed for sticking to due diligence, prudent management, etc, in its assessment of whoever it deems fit for its facilities. In other words, the organisation would never have approved the first $75m if it was convinced that the Oshiomhole administration did not meet the requisite standard, let alone approve the second tranche. In approving the second, the bank simply emphasised the point that the administration’s reputation for prudent resource management is very intact despite claims by his opponents to the contrary.

Secondly, let us not forget that President Buhari rode into the seat of power because of his reputation for standing for anything that is right. Like the World Bank that is not given to frivolities, he will never support any course that is meant to swindle either the country or its people. Indeed, there is hardly any doubt that he is very unlikely to agree to transmit a letter to the National Assembly, as he did, knowing that in doing so, he is lending his hard-earned reputation to a dubious process designed to con the same people he vowed to redeem.

In the final analysis, I am of the opinion that rather than oppose, condemn or politicise the issue, everyone, including politically motivated mischief makers, should be more concerned with the need to ensure that the facility is deployed solely for the benefit of providing development for the people of the state.

Indeed, we should be proud that in a country like ours where government officials are notoriously corrupt, both the World Bank and President Buhari adjudged our governor qualified in matters relating to prudent management of our collective resources.

In any case, we all are aware that government is a continuum. As true as it is that the Oshiomhole administration is winding up, it is doubly true that his exit will not mean the end of the state’s development process. Therefore, just as it is true that a continuation of the development process is assured even after his exit, it stands to reason too that the reason for which the state acquired the loan will continue. It would therefore appear puerile for anyone to conclude that the loan is irrelevant to the state just because the present administration will be gone in less than two years. In that case, mischief makers calling for a wholesale disapproval of the loan must know that the right thing to do at the moment is to work towards making sure it is judiciously applied as specified. That is the most sensible thing to do.

  • NSC South-South zone to organise Chess competition in Edo

The Zonal office of the National Sports Commission (NSC), South-South Zonal has said it would organise a Chess competition in Edo to popularise the game in the country.

The Zonal Coordinator, Yemi Usikaye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Benin that the competition would provide equal opportunities to all participants to showcase their talents as well as learn new skills.

The competition, which would feature the male and female categories, would be staged at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin.

Usikaye said the arrival date would be on August 19, while the competition would run between August 20 and 24. The six states in the zone to participate  are Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

“We don’t want to concentrate only on football, wrestling and boxing. We want to develop other games, where we have comparative advantage locally and internationally. We have a representative in the World Cup holding in October and we also have a representative in the World Billionaire Chess Game,” he said.

He noted that exposing the players to regular training and competition would make them high flyers and encourage grassroots development of the sport.

Usikaye said there would be a meeting of sports directors from the zone to be held in Benin on August 20.

You are in safe hands, Oshiomhole assures IDPs

Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has assured the internally displaced persons at a camp in Uhogua, Benin City, that the state is home to all.
He assured that the state government will take care of their needs while they remain in the camp.
Speaking during his on-the-spot assessment of facilities and condition of inhabitants of the camp, in company of his wife, Iara and some senior government officials, on Wednesday, the Governor said “Nigeria is one, it doesn’t matter whether you are from Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Kano, Jigawa, Edo or Lagos , we are all one Nigeria.”
” I myself lived in the North all my adult life and that is why I understand the Hausa language. We will ensure you get all that you need. These are our children now and I can see that they come from different part of the country and they are very young children.
“We will immediately bring 500 bags of rice and five cows and ensure that Doctors and Nurses are deployed to be taking care of them and will help them to develop the school, give them qualified teachers.
“We have to do everything to ensure that they are comfortable and we have discussed with the security agencies, they will ensure that adequate security is provided to protect these children and those whose parents have been identified, we will arrange, at the expense of Edo State Government, for the parents to come here and pay them a visit so that they can reunite with their children. They can still leave them in the camp if they so wish but at least they will be assured that their children are in good hands.
“If you have any challenges, let us know. I have assigned seven very senior officers; two Commissioners and five Directors who will be around to ensure that the kids are safe.
“I have also discussed with and asked the Commissioner for Education to straightaway start to build schools for the children. I know you already have what you call School, but you know in Edo State we have standard and because Edo is one and we are particularly keen in ensuring that no child is denied quality education. It doesn’t matter that they are here because of some certain crisis in some part of the country but once they are in Edo State they have become part of the Edo Community and are entitled to all the privileges.
“So we are going to rebuild the school, furnish it and post qualified government teachers here. I think the recent issue was a communication gap. There was a communication gap because the impression that people had was that some of the kids wanted to reunite with their parents. Of course we know that there is no substitute to parental care, but we said it is better for their parents to come here, see them and when they see them, they will have confidence that their children are in good hands and then decide whether to go with them or to leave them here.
“Whatever has happened was unfortunate and I want to convey to these children and to you, the best wishes from Mr. President because yesterday I had a conversation with him and he is very concerned about the welfare of every Nigerian child and the welfare of all those who have been displaced as a result of Boko Haram and he asked me to convey his best wishes to the children and even the elderly ones among them.

“I have assured him that Edo State Government will take full control, provide every support that you need including building a school, provide teachers, provide basic conveniences so that these children will live a very decent life because we never know, one of these might become the President tomorrow. I can see that the kids are in very good spirit. Of course, they miss their loved ones but we understand the peculiar circumstances.
“We have taken time to study, through the security agencies, what and who are here, where they come from and how they got here and I think we have all the information now. What is important and very clear to me is that they are all happy to be here and they want to remain here and I believe any Nigerian and every Nigerian is entitled to live and stay in any place in which he has comfort or he wants to stay and so we will give them every support that they need,” the governor stated.

  • Three killed over bitter leaf plant

Three persons have been killed at Ibillo in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State over ownership of a bitter leaf plant.
The victims were butchered on Sunday evening by a man popularly known as Alhaji.
Names of the deceased were given as Aliu Ademo, a girl called Favour and a three-year old boy, Isaac.
Witnesses said Alhaji had quarrel with late Favour over the bitter leaf plant because he did not seek the consent of the owner before plucking some to make soup.
The witness said, “Alhaji who is from Igbira came out with a cutlass and beheaded the girl. Mr Aliu saw what happened and started shouting. Alhaji ran after Isaac the little boy to kill him but Aliu pursued him in order to save the boy. He succeeded in killing both the small boy and Mr Aliu.
“He decided to kill the man because he came to save the little boy. The small boy was rushed to the hospital because he was still unconscious but we later heard he died this morning (Monday).
Alhaji is on the run now but the police is looking for him”.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Stephen Onwechei, confirmed the incident but said the suspect was on the run.
“He will be arrested. He abandoned his cutlass and took off after killing. When people came around to stop him, he matcheted them including the three year old child.
“That is barbaric. I understand he previously had quarrel with the mother of the child over the ownership of the bitter leaf in the compound. That is madness but we must arrest him no matter how far he tries to run. He must face justice for his wicked act,” he declared.
