  • Woman seeks justice over daughter’s defilement

A woman whose three years old daughter was defiled by a 30-year old neighbour, Peter Ewanta, has cried out for justice.

The woman who gave her name as Nkechi Amaechi said the suspect’s family members refused to pay for medical treatment for her daughter.

Mrs. Nkechi said her daughter has been manifesting several symptoms since she was forcefully defiled.

The incident occurred at Ewanta Street off New Lagos Road in Benin City.

In a chat with newsmen, Mrs. Nkechi said the suspect lured her daughter into his room under the pretext of buying biscuit for her and defiled her.

She said the suspect was a closed door neighbour.

“I saw my daughter the way she was walking. When I checked, I saw that her vagina as very wide. It was wider than that of a woman that just gave birth.”

“The man was begging and wanted to fight me. I had to call the police. I don’t have money now to take care of my daughter. I want help from people for proper medical treatment.”

“My daughter has not been able to pass out excreta since Sunday when the incident occurred. Her stomach is now swelling.”

Spokesman for the Edo Police Command, DSP Stephen Onwochei, confirmed the incident and said the suspect has been arrested.

Edo, BoI set up debt recovery committee

Edo State government has set-up a six-man committee to recover loan it granted some small scale business enterprise in collaboration with the Bank of Industry (BoI) tagged EDSG-BoI Micro Credit Scheme.

Many of the beneficiaries of the scheme are yet to pay back the debt.

Addressing members of the Debt Recovery Committee, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Barr. Macdonald Obasuke, urged the committee to recover all loans being owed by defaulters across the state.

The commissioner expressed lamented the non-payment of the loan, adding that it prevented others from benefitting as the facility was revolving in nature.

Macdonald advised the loan defaulters to cooperate with the Committee to avoid any legal action and urged members of the committee to carry out their duty with passion and prudence so as not to mar the objectives for which they were constituted.

The terms of reference of the committee included move to ascertain the actual amount owed by the beneficiaries as at May 31 this year as well as notification of the beneficiaries’ guarantors.

Oshiomhole’ll restructure Edo YES, says APC chair

Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Anslem Ojezua, has said Governor Adams Oshiomhole will restructure the Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) to conform to the current economic realities.

The chairman was reacting to the controversies trailing the phasing out of the scheme.

The Edo YES was inaugurated in 2009 as part of the government’s intervention programme to empower over 10,000 youths.

Addressing reporters in Benin, the state capital, Ojezua said the governor’s decision to abruptly end the programme was caused by a drop in the allocations from the Federation Account.

The APC chairman noted that the drop was also the fallout of decline in the price of crude oil in the international market.

He said Oshiomhole did not take the action to impoverish the youth, who played a predominant role in the state’s political development, but to ensure that the beneficiaries derived maximum benefits from it.

According to him, Oshiomhole has the moral justification to determine how youths could earn regular wages.

Ojezua said the absence of some youths from their place of primary assignments – following their journeys abroad or getting alternative jobs – had been an issue the government was concerned about.

The party chairman assured that the youth would be reinstated, after a thorough screening by the committee set up for that purpose.

He regretted the hardship the hardworking beneficiaries were going through.

Ojezua expressed satisfaction at the friendly manner the issues were handled.

The APC chairman hoped that before the end of the year, the scheme would be back on track.

He assured the youth of his readiness to liaise with the government on how to re-absorb those affected into the renewed scheme.

    •Kidnapped Magistrate released

There is anxiety in Edo State over the whereabouts of a kidnap victim and a traditional title holder, Dr Paul Erie.

The associate professor at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has been in his captors’ den for one month.

The other victim, Mrs Victoria Oyekpen, is a Magistrate in Jattu, Etsako West Local Government Area and wife of the Bishop of Akoko-Edo Diocese of Anglican Church.

Residents of Igbanke, Orhionmown Local Government Area, and the university community are at pains about Dr Erie’s whereabouts, one month after he was abducted from his home.

The traditional ruler of the community, the Onojie of Omolua, Dr Isaac Uwaifo, told our reporter yesterday that the community was worried about Dr Erie.

He said: “We have not heard from them (kidnappers). We learnt they spoke with his wife once. After that, they have not sent any message – written or oral. Our people are worried.”

Last week, AAU’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) staged a peaceful protest in Ekpoma and suspended lectures and examinations over Dr Erie’s abduction.

Mrs Oyekpen was reportedly abducted last Saturday evening by some gunmen on Igarra-Ibillo Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

She was released on Sunday afternoon by her abductors in an unclear circumstance.

None of her family was ready to speak on the incident.

It was gathered that Mrs Oyekpen, last Saturday, arrived from Asaba, Delta State, for a church engagement in company of the wife of the late Archbishop of Bendel Province of the Anglican Church, Dame Mabel Agbaje, and others.

  • Man dies during ‘deliverance’ in Edo

A 45-year-old man, Osayande Ekhator, has died during a deliverance service at a Pentecostal church at Uselu Quarters in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

The victim’s family had taken him to the Holy Ghost Deliverance Centre, also called Hope Ministry, for spiritual cleansing when the incident occurred.

Relations alleged that the victim was beaten to death, adding that they saw his body with bloodstains.

The father of the deceased, Pa Ekhator, told reporters that he suspected that the deliverance went wrong when his son was thrown to the ground, with his hands and legs tied.

He said: “They forced him and tied him up, as usual, and threw him down. From there, they carried a bucket of water and poured it on his body.

“The mother asked why. They said that was what they usually did; that after struggling, they wanted him to have some rest. After about five minutes, she came out crying that Osayande was dead.”

A sister of the victim, who spoke in confidence, alleged that the victim was “beaten to death”.

She said the “killers” also planned to deposit his remains at a mortuary.

“They beat him to death. They removed his clothes, bathed him and  clothed him.

“They said they wanted to take him to a mortuary. But we refused.”

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said there were bloodstains on the head of the deceased.

“I think he was hit on the head. I saw blood on his head when his body was placed in a vehicle,” the resident said.

Resident Pastor, Mrs. Isoken Ekundaye, denied the allegations.

The cleric said several “lunatics” had been healed in the church.

She said: “We don’t kill here; we don’t beat here. If they bring insane people, we heal them.”

Some youths invaded the church and destroyed its property.

Police spokesman Stephen Onwochei, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said the pastor had been arrested and the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation.

  • Edo PDP begins search for governorship candidate

Edo PDP begins search for governorship candidate

The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun the search for a credible candidate to present against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s governorship election.

PDP chieftains said to have shown interest in the race are: Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, Chief Solomon Edebiri, Matthew Iduoriyikemwen and Mike Onolememen.

It was learnt that a special committee has been set up by the top hierarchy of the party to scout for a popular candidate.

A source told our reporter that all lawmakers, except Ehiozuwa Agbonnayima, representing Ikpoba Okha/Egor Federal Constituency, attended the meeting when the committee was set up.

The source said Ehiozuwa was barred from the meeting because of his alleged romance with the APC.

But in a telephone chat, Ehiozuwa said he was not barred from any PDP meeting.

The lawmaker denied acting the APC script at the National Assembly.

He said: “The National Assembly is not APC or PDP. You do what is in the interest of Nigeria and your constituency once you are a member.

“I am PDP member. The Captain Hosa they are talking about is no longer a politician. Everybody goes to his house, irrespective of party affiliations.”

Former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, in an interview, had said he would join other well-meaning leaders of the PDP to scout for a credible candidate without connection with PDP’s failed government.

He said: “The 2016 governorship will not be based on political platform; it is going to be about who the candidate is. For the PDP to be seen to have broken ranks with irresponsibility, we have to be sure that our candidate will not have any relationship with previous failures of the PDP government in Edo.”

Former Governor Lucky Igbinedion said the next PDP governor would be a founding member of the party in the state.

  • Who succeeds Oshiomhole in Edo?

    Who succeeds Oshiomhole in Edo?

Ahead of next year’s governorship election in Edo State, aspirants have started to mobilise supporters and set up structures for the realisation of their dreams. Correspondent Osagie Otabor reports.

Who will succeed Governor Adams Oshiomhole in November, next year when his tenure expires? This is a one million dollar question Edo residents are battling to answer because of the unprecedented developmental strides of the governor. Many people have indicated interest in the race, but the big question is, who will the people trust with their votes?

Among those interested in the job are Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Oshiomhole’s deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu, former Minister of State for Works Chris Ogiemwonyi, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere, Mike Onolemenmen, Chief Solomon Edebiri, Kenneth Imasuangbon, Matthew Iduoriyikemwen and Christopher Iyare.

The aspirants are carrying out consultations and intense lobbying among leaders in the state and explaining why they are better replacement after Oshiomhole.

In June 2014, two-time governor of the defunct Bendel State, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia, began a lone search for a successor to Oshiomhole. Ogbemudia began his search during the party primaries for the recent general elections. He visited the Ijaw in Gelegele and some community leaders in the state to seek their support.

Ogbemudia told the Ijaw that he looked forward to the realisation of his dream that one of them (Ijaw) would become governor and urged them to work with other ethnic groups to achieve the goal.

He said: “We need to work together as a team. We need to keep our cooperation working. Expand and make friends and make sure you are part and parcel of the whole. There are many things we can do without fighting. We need God to give us somebody to take over from Oshiomhole in 2016.”

Ogbemudia told the elders of Evbuotubu and Ohovbe that Oshiomhole’s successor would emerge, following consultations with community leaders.

He said the time has come for the people to look for a good candidate, who would build on the legacies of Oshiomhole, instead of waiting till the eleventh hour.

Last month, the former governor announced that he would launch the Edo Mass Movement (EMM) on July 4, adding that the group will lead the search team.

Ogbemudia noted that the state has made tremendous strides in infrastructure, adding that Oshiomhole’s successor should not destroy his achievements.

He said: “We in Edo State, want to ensure that the state is developed and because of that I am going to proclaim Edo Mass Movement, irrespective of party affiliations, and we will support any political party that gives us indication that it wants Edo State to succeed.

“The launch of the movement entails the mobilisation of people across the three senatorial districts to sensitise them on the need to collaborate in the search for a credible candidate that believes in good governance so as not to destroy the progress made so far by the Oshiomhole administration.”

Ogbemudia, however, said the movement would not work for any political party, but for the people in their search for a credible successor.

Analysts, however, are of the view that the search for Oshiomhole’s successor by Ogbemudia would be a fruitless one. They argue that searching for a candidate without any political platform would be a hard sell to party leaders. Ogbemudia, observers said, lacks the goodwill to propel any candidate to electoral victory.

Ogbemudia, a former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was a member of the defunct National Republican Party (NRC). The NRC fielded Lucky Igbinedion, who lost the governorship election to Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

When PDP was in power in Edo, Ogbemudia’s residence was a rallying point. His son, Eghosa, won an election as Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government during the Igbinedion administration. One of his daughters was councillor in Ikpoba-Okha.

In the 2012 governorship election, Ogbemudia ‘supported’ the PDP, which lost in the 18 local governments. In the last general elections, two of his children contested under the PDP. A third contested under the APC. Only one, Uyi, got the PDP ticket to contest for the Oredo East Constituency in the House of Assembly, but she lost to the APC candidate, Chris Okaeben.

Besides Ogbemudia, the Edo Peoples Assembly (EPA), led by Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, is also searching for a successor to Oshiomhole. The group said the next governor must also make life meaningful for Edo people.

The ideal candidate must have pedigree, proven record of service and sufficient understanding of the intricacies of governance.

Obaseki said the group would ensure that elected officials are alive to their responsibilities.

Obaseki said the EPA will educate the masses and the political class so that the killing of youths would stop because of the inordinate ambition of a few.

He said: “We will move to places and talk to people. We will take over our streets and ask our brothers to sink boreholes in their neighborhood”

“The card reader has made us to know that the political calculus has changed. People will not be able to go into a small building and thumbprint papers. It is either the card is reading or it is not.”

“The 2016 election is going to be a pivotal turning point for the Edo people. Nigeira has just witnessed a paradigm shift in electioneering in Nigeria. If it doesn’t affect the people of the state now, we might just miss the box.

“It is important that we must be able to take over the political space and agenda of the state. We must be able to make sure that we contribute directly to the emergence of someone who will protect the economic and socio-standing of the average Edo man.”

The APC has barred aspirants from setting up campaign structures and it has been silent on zoning to any senatorial district. The PDP has also not spoken on zoning, but indications are rife that both parties may field candidates from Edo South Senatorial District.

Indications that Ogbemudia’s choice may be rejected by some PDP leaders emerged last week when former Governor Lucky Igbinedion declared that the next governor would be a founding member of the PDP.

Former Senate Chief Whip Senator Roland Owie said he would join other well-meaning leaders of the PDP to scout for a credible candidate, who does not have any connection with the PDP failed government.

He said: “The 2016 governorship will not be based on political platform; it is going to be who that candidate is. For the PDP to be seen to have broken ranks with irresponsibility, we have to be sure that our candidate for 2016 will not have any relationship with previous failures of the PDP government in Edo”

“The truth is that the performance of the PDP government between 1999-2007 cannot be compared to the performance of the Oshiomhole government because we all have eyes and we can see. You can see achievements in roads, schools and many other spheres of life. The Ugoneki-Ehor Road, which passes through my community, was done in 1974 by the military administration; no body touched that road until Oshiomhole came. Today I can get to my village  in 20 minutes from Benin.”

  • Police arrest 30 suspected cultists in Edo

The police in Edo State  have arrested 30 suspected cultists in the last one month.

Those arrested have joined the list of the 227 suspected cultists who were remanded in prison custody in May.

The police said 20 suspected kidnappers were arrested for abducting prominent persons in the state.

Police Commissioner Samuel Adegbuyi, who addressed reporters in Benin, the state capital, on the security situation, said the suspects were intercepted by the command’s highway patrol teams.

Adegbuyi said 15 kidnap victims were rescued and 107 arms recovered from the suspects.

The police chief said some of the suspects were not Edo residents but used the state as their escape route.

He noted that local vigilantes used their knowledge of the terrain to aid the command in tracking down criminals, even at odd hours.

Adegbuyi said: “Apart from the 227 high profile cultists arraigned in court between May 2 and 9, this year, we have 20 other suspects who have confessed to have kidnapped prominent individuals in the state and even outside the state.

“Fifteen victims of kidnapping have been rescued. Nine AK-47 rifles were recovered. One Bareta pistol and about 60 locally made weapons as well as some paraphernalia of military outfits were recovered.”

The police chief said highway patrol vehicles had been deployed in Benin-Lagos Road, Benin-Agbor Road, Benin-Akure Road, Auchi-Okpella Road, Ibilo, Ehor and Benin bypass.

  • Tanker driver burnt to death in road mishap

A tanker driver conveying petrol to an unknown destination was on Saturday burnt to death in a road mishap that occurred at the Ovia River head bridge along Benin-Ore-Lagos express road.

Three vehicles including a heavy duty tow truck belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were burnt.

The fire was still on as at press 3.28pm on Saturday.

Officials of the FRSC had to divert motorists going and returning from Lagos to link Benin City through Iguobazuwa road at Okada junction.

Edo Sector Commander of the FRSC, Familoni Oluwasusi, said the fire occurred when the tanker fully loaded with fuel hit the tow truck used for clearing two previous accidents on the road.

Familoni said the tanker driver lost control despite diversion and obstruction placed on the road to warn motorists that its officials were clearing vehicles involved in multiple accidents.

He said a truck conveying diesel fell on the road on Friday evening and after it was partially cleared, two other vehicles had accident almost at the same spot.

The Edo FRSC boss stated that it was in the process of clearing the vehicles that the tanker driver rammed into the two trucks and caused the fire.

He said his men escaped with injuries but the tanker driver was not lucky.

According to him, “His corpse is still burning and clearing of obstruction is ongoing. The injured has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

“Patrol team blocked the road to remove a crashed truck when the trailer carrying fuel lost control and hit the FRSC two truck which resulted in fire outbreak,” he said.

Boko Haram: Union seeks support for displaced persons in Edo

The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) has appealed for organizations, international donors and individuals to support the government in catering for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) who are victims of Boko Haram attacks.

The national president of MHWUN, Mr Josiah Biolemoye made the appeal when he led other members of his executives to donate cash and food stuff worth about N2m to the IDP camp in Benin on Saturday .

Biolemoye who alongside members of executives openly wept at the numbers of Boko Haram victims in the camp, stressed that there was no way government only can bring succour to the IDP’s.

The president who described as tragidic, the pathetic stories told by some of the victims, said irrespective of tribe, religion or state, we all belong to one and the same country.

He urged Nigerians to show love and be their brothers keepers by coming to the aid of these people.

While praising efforts by government to put an end to the insurgency, he stressed that all hands must be on deck to address the menace.

“Welfare of these people must be of priority not only to the government but to all Nigerians, organisations as well as international communities.

“With the situation I met here in this camp in Edo today which is just one of the several camps in the country, there is no way welfare of this people can be left in the hand of the government alone.

“We must all show to be truely our brothers keepers by coming to their aid. There is no assistance that will be too small for these people.

“This camp in Edo, is being run by an individual who was only moved by their plead for assistance. We should all emulate the noble gesture of this pastor as well as other Nigerians that have in one way or the other come to the rescue of these people,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the cleric who runs the camp, Solomon Folorunsho of the International Christian Centre for Mission said what he sees in the IDP’s are young and intelligent Nigerians who will move the country to greater height.

About 1,500 IDP’s are in the camp in addition to over five hundred orphans previously catered for by the mission.

The Boko Haram victims comprises mostly of children, women and men.

The victims were brought in from the North East according to the cleric through another missionary group.
