    EFCC quizzes Chris Giwa

The factional president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Chris Giwa, has been quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, africanFootball.com reports.

Giwa was whisked away from his Abuja home on Friday by EFCC operatives to answer questions on the banking transactions involving one of his associates.

According to africanFootball.com, the associate’s banking transactions between January and June this year were put at 300,000 naira, but between June and August, the transactions had skyrocketed to 250 million naira.

EFCC has now ordered 19 other persons who had transferred cash through this account to appear before it on Monday.

The list included an ex-international, who was inaugurated on a six-man panel by Giwa to run the Nigeria premier league till the end of the season.

EFCC arrests three for hacking into bank’s system

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three suspects, who allegedly attempted to compromise the Enterprise Bank’s system and steal depositors’ funds.

The suspects were said to have failed to get access to the bank’s network.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the arrest was made possible by a worker, who cried out that the bank’s system was about to be hacked into.

The statement said: “Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a syndicate of scammers for attempting to defraud Enterprise Bank Plc. Ola Lawal, Olumide Kayode and Abass Adekunle were arrested following a botched attempt to compromise the bank’s system and steal depositors’ funds, using an electronic device known as Keelog Key Grabber.

“The trio’s arrest was made possible by an insider, who revealed to the bank’s management that some fraudsters were planning to gain access to its network, using a device called Keelog Key Grabber.

“Investigations showed that a worker of the bank was contacted by one of the suspected fraudsters, who proposed a business arrangement to him on how to hack into the system of the bank.”

The EFCC added that the worker subsequently informed the management of the bank and he was instructed to play along with the fraudster.

“In the arrangement, an electronic device called Keelog Key Grabber would be used to harvest passwords of some of the key operation workers of the bank.

“The grabber was meant to be plugged into the computer system of the Head of Operation of a particular branch, to retrieve the information technology configuration settings from the computer system and pave the way for the fraudsters to move customers’ funds out of the bank.

“Lawal was arrested while trying to hand over the Keelog Key Grabber to the worker. His arrest led to the arrest of two other suspects: Olumide Kayode Maborukoje and Abass Ajibade,” the statement added.

Items recovered from the suspects include: a keylogger, a laptop, a router, a modem, SIM cards, USB keyhole log with a template of keylogger and a jotter containing some account numbers, which they intended to use for the fraud.

The anti-graft body said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

  • ‘Mu’azu, Tukur will destroy Adamawa PDP’

A group, The Adamawa State Collective (ASC), has alleged that the attempts by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Adamu Mu’azu and the Principal Private Secretary to the President, Alhaji Hassan Tukur, to impose a candidate on the PDP will spell doom for the party in the October governorship by-election in the state.

It accused Mu’azu and Tukur of working towards imposing the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to emerge as the governorship candidate of the PDP in Adamawa State against all odds.

The deft moves by Mu’azu and Tukur, ASC alleged, were part of a subtle but grand conspiracy against President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 general elections.

A statement by ASC’s Musa Ayuba stated that the plot by the PDP National Chairman is aimed at planting his surrogates and men for the actualisation of his 2019 presidential ambition without considering the consequences on Jonathan’s ambition in 2015.

The ASC said: “Mu’azu doesn’t care if in the process President Jonathan’s political future is jeopardised. This was exactly what he did to former President Olusgun Obasanjo in 2003 when he campaigned against the then president by telling the people of Bauchi State to vote for him (Mu’azu) but vote against Obasanjo.

“This was the reason why in 2007 Chief Obasanjo ensured that Mu’azu’s candidate for the governorship of Bauchi was defeated and also ensured that the PDP National Chairman lost his Senatorial election.”

The group demanded for the emergence of a Christian governor in the interest of fairness and equity.

It said: “After the Christians had governed for 8 years through Boni Haruna and the Muslims also for 8 years through Murtala Nyako, it is only fair and just that the next governor should be a Christian.

“We demand that Mr. President supports a Christian to emerge as the next governor. We are not slaves of the Fulanis.”

The ASC vowed to work against the PDP if it fails to field a Christian aspirant.

  • Ribadu swims through waiver storm

    Ribadu swims through waiver storm

BY defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and immediately vying for the Adamawa governorship, Nuhu Ribadu, former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has probably taken the greatest risk of his career. Even if he succeeds, he will by no means be justified at the end of the day, for the future is fraught with graver risk yet: of internal squabbles within his new party, danger of unsuccessful tenure as governor, and other unforeseen problems and obstacles. Together with a few other aspirants, he has, however, finally got a waiver to contest the Adamawa governorship poll. But should he fail to win the election, it would be hard to see him recover in a hurry.

But it is clear that in spite of having been assured of a waiver and the party ticket, the party’s national and state hierarchies have presented unexpected obstacles before Mallam Ribadu. Suddenly, it is no longer looking like Mallam Ribadu had made the best decision of his life. His competitors in the party are no pushovers, as they also have grit and implacable backers. If the presidency does get deeply and brusquely involved in the Adamawa race and imbroglio, it is possible they may swing it for him. But it would be over the dead bodies of his rivals, and at a cost that would definitely be pyrrhic.

Worse for Mallam Ribadu, should he win, it would come at a prohibitive cost to his personal values and principles, as inchoate as they appear to be. Not only does he not have money, and others must now sponsor his race and ambition, leaving him to guess the quality and scope of their altruism, it also appears he would watch agonisingly as the party behemoths crush his opponents in ways that would not warm the cockles of his heart. In retrospect, Mallam Ribadu should have waited more patiently for the right time, right party, and right office. He now cannot afford to fail; but even if he succeeds, he will rue his success. In other words, damn if he does; and damn if he doesn’t.

  • Why I joined PDP, by Ribadu

Why I joined PDP, by Ribadu

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has explained why he left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He also denied disparaging the APC and Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano).

Ribadu was the presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), one of the parties that fused to form the APC.

In a letter to APC Chairman in Bako Ward in Adamawa State, he said he would forever be thankful to the opposition party for admitting him into its fold as a member.

The letter, dated August 14, 2014, reads: “I wish to forward my membership withdrawal with the All Progressives Congress (APC) from this day, Monday, 30th of July 2014.

“It has indeed been a great pleasure working and being associated with the party, APC. I am forever thankful for all the support accorded me while I was a member.”

On his Facebook page, Ribadu opened up to his friends on why he joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He also denied insinuations that he attacked APC, Amaechi and Kwankwaso.

He said: “I know how difficult it may be for you to come to terms with my defection to another party. But I must assure you that it’s a carefully considered decision for which I do not wish to hurt anyone’s feeling.

“I’ll not embark on a needless animosity with my good friends, irrespective of political, religious and ethnic affiliations.

“Let me make it known that I did not issue a statement disparaging APC and its members, including Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Kwankwaso…

“These were clearly fabricated, expected backlash, by mischievous characters interested in misleading the public and drawing a picture of non-existent feuds between me and my good friends.

“My defection shouldn’t be seen as an initiation of political antagonism with my good friends in another party. I still hold them in high esteem, and even where there are marked differences, I believe there are decorous and honourable ways of resolving them.

“So, kindly disregard any statement said to be by me attacking the personality of any politician since my defection. I’ll never allow myself to be drawn into such disrespectful exchange.

“As for my next step in this political struggle, this would be made known in due time.

“For now, I wish to assure you that my defection is in pursuit of a good cause and never out of any selfish interests as portrayed by a section.

“Thanks for bearing with me on this decision, and for those who have been in solidarity with my struggles and still giving me the benefits of the doubt, I’m most grateful. I’ll never let you down on this new path. Thank you!”

Yesterday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the time table and schedule of activities for the Adamawa State governorship by-election.

Latest to pick the form is Adamawa State House of Assembly Chief Whip Jerry Kumdisi.

  • Ribadu takes the plunge

    Ribadu takes the plunge

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) is now a governorship aspirant in Adamawa State.  Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI examines his chance at the primaries.

After several weeks of speculations, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has finally defected to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ribadu, who registered for the PDP last Saturday after a meeting with the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, is not your archetypal Nigerian politician. Though the PDP had been making overtures to him, the former anti-graft czar remained consistent as a member of the opposition since he entered the murky waters of Nigerian politics in 2011. He hardly engages in political diatribe, a practice that has been severely abused in Nigerian politics. A quiet and easy-going fellow, the no-nonsense former EFCC chairman’s watchword has always been how he can utilise his talents to serve his people and his country.

When President Goodluck Jonathan withdrew the charges against the anti-corruption crusader, which paved the way for his return from exile in 2010, expectations were that he was going to join the ruling party. But, Ribadu chose the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), one of the three major opposition parties that metamorphosed into the All Progressives Congress (APC). He eventually became the flag bearer of the party in the 2011 presidential election. Since the emergence of the APC, Ribadu has acquitted himself very well as a chieftain of the party in his native Adamawa State. Indeed, he was one of the closest allies of former Governor Murtala Nyako, who was impeached recently under questionable circumstances.

    Ribadu at crossroads

Ribadu is today at a crossroads of his political career. He has not only decided to take a shot at the governorship of Adamawa State — rather than the highly exalted presidential seat – but has also dumped the APC for the ruling PDP, to pursue his latest ambition. Following the impeachment of Nyako, which necessitated conducting a by-election within three months, Ribadu has been perceived as a potential candidate by both the APC and the PDP. Consequently, the two major parties have been trying to woo him for the crucial contest, which is expected to be a stepping stone for the rival political platforms ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The defection of Ribadu, who  picked his governorship nomination form in Yola yesterday, is no doubt a boost for the ruling party. According to our source in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, it was engineered as a strategy by the PDP to weaken the APC support base ahead of the governorship contest.  Ribadu had made up his mind to switch to the ruling party, but was only waiting for the approval of President Goodluck Jonathan.  The President conveyed his approval at two  meetings through aides delegated to herald the former presidential candidate into the fold. The meetings were reportedly held in Abuja and Kaduna, where Ribadu was assured that he would be granted waivers to  pave the way for him to run.

Observers say there has been overwhelming pressure from some notable individuals from Adamawa and beyond, urging him to jettison his presidential ambition and vie for the Adamawa governorship instead. Such individuals, it is said, have specifically asked Ribadu to utilise the PDP platform, which they believe is more formidable, given the political equation in the state.

    Turning point

However, according to a source, Ribadu had become frustrated by the top-bottom leadership approach of the APC. He added that Ribadu was unhappy with what he saw as the APC’s lack of ability to resolve conflicts within its fold. Before his decision to dump the opposition party, he was still nursing the ambition to contest the presidential election in 2015 on the APC’s platform, but, according to the  source, it was made clear to him indirectly that he does not stand any chance of securing the ticket through an open  primary.

The turning point, the source said, was the way Nyako was abandoned by the party leadership in the height of the crisis that led to his impeachment. “Ribadu worked so hard and nearly saved the former governor because he was able to convince some members of the Assembly to withdraw their support for the impeachment,” an associate of the former EFCC chairman said.

He added: “If he had gotten the support of the national leadership of the party, all they needed was one more member and the impeachment would have collapsed.” This reminded Ribadu about the way he himself was also abandoned midway into the 2011 presidential campaign when it became clear to the ACN leadership that there was no way the former EFCC chairman could win the election.

As a last resort to save his political career, Ribadu has now settled for the Adamawa governorship. He had chances of realising his governorship ambition under the APC, because the party’s national leadership saw him as a good candidate that could help to give the PDP a run for their money. But with his love-hate relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has suddenly emerged as the leader of the party in Adamawa, the possibility is that he may not get the ticket eventually. “As you know, Ribadu once wrote a report indicting Turaki for corruption,” an official of the Adamawa State chapter of the APC was quoted as saying. He added: “Both men have yet to forget that episode and it is unlikely Ribadu will be comfortable working with the former Vice President in the same party.”

The APC leadership had continued to dissuade the former anti-corruption chief from defecting to the PDP. But Ribadu’s attitude to the whole thing suggested that the matter had already been decided and that the APC leadership’s intervention was coming too late. In response to the speculation that he was leaving the APC for the ruling party, Ribadu said recently that he was not bothered about the pressure being mounted by his former party, the APC, to halt his planned defection to the PDP. Ribadu, who responded through his media aide, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, noted that while he appreciated the gestures, he was entitled to his decision.

Be that as it may, securing the Adamawa PDP governorship ticket is not going to be a jolly ride for Ribadu. He might be granted waivers from the powers that be in the party, which would come in the form of overlooking certain clauses in the party’s constitution, particularly the one that stipulates that an aspirant for an elective position must have been a member of the party for a given period. But he may not be given an automatic ticket to fly the party’s flag during the election. Thus, now that he has become an aspirant under the PDP platform, he would be obliged to take his chances alongside other members who have indicated interest in the plum job.

The Secretary, Adamawa State PDP, Mr. A. T. Shehu, acknowledged this. He said the party would appreciate a personality like Ribadu in its fold. Shehu cautions nevertheless that the PDP is a party that respects its constitution and manifesto, and that the former EFCC chairman is not likely to be given preferential treatment. “That Nuhu Ribadu has made name does not give him the automatic ticket to be the party’s flag bearer. Those of us in the party that have shown interest to vie for the governorship ticket are equally very good materials,” he noted.

    PDP’s long list of contenders

Interestingly, the PDP has more than enough contenders. Some of the aspirants include Dr. Umar Ardo, an academician; Aliyu Idi Hong, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and a protégé of Professor Jibril Aminu; Awwal Tukur, son of former national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and a former member of the House of Representatives; and General Buba Marwa, former military administrator of Lagos State.

The list also includes Marcus Gundiri, a popular politician in the state, Senator Abubakar Gurei, and Mr. Ahmed Gulak, a former Presidential adviser on political affairs.

A number of the aspirants have been eyeing the governorship of the state for a long time. For instance,  Girei has been in contest since 2003 when he insisted in participating in the primaries against the wish of the then Vice President, Atiku Abubakar after other aspirants stepped down for the incumbent governor, Boni Haruna. He also aspired in 2007 alongside Nyako. Similarly, Dr. Ardo contested in the last gubernatorial primaries with Nyako and challenged the result at the Supreme Court. He has been an active member of the PDP Stakeholders and Elders Forum and he was a key player in the fight to remove Nyako.

Marwa and Gundiri are equally not new to the Adamawa governorship race, having aspired to govern the state under different political platforms. For instance, Marwa was a former member of the PDP. He had pitched tent with the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), because he was denied the governorship ticket in 2007. He contested the 2011 governorship election in the state under the CPC platform and returned to the PDP in April 2014 when he realized that he might not get a fair deal in the contest for the APC’s ticket when the leadership of the party was handed over to former Governor Nyako.

    No automatic ticket

The long list of contenders vying for the PDP ticket is an indication that that the party faces a tough choice and that there would be crisis if anything goes wrong. According to our source, some political heavyweights in the party are intent on frustrating the former presidential candidate’s lobby to secure waivers to qualify to contest the governorship. The dissenting voices see Ribadu’s bid to contest the poll under the PDP platform as an imposition.

  • Adamawa stakeholders endorse Ribadu

Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) stakeholders in the 21 local governments have endorsed the governorship ambition of the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Ribadu got their nod yesterday in Yola as the stakeholders said only he would be elected.

At the event, convened by the Concerned Youths for Good Governance in Adamawa, held at the conference hall of Muna Hotel, the stakeholders extolled Ribadu for his incorruptible stance.

The group’s leader, Alhaji Isa Ibrahim Toungo, said: “Our clamour for Ribadu is an honest and patriotic effort to entrench good governance, following the decay, which pervades the state as a result of poor leadership.”

He added that Ribadu has earned a reputation of being a fearless, dedicated and patriotic citizen.

Ribadu’s representative thanked the people for their support.

He said if elected, the former EFCC chairman would restore the state’s lost glory.

Stakeholders at the event included the former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, ex-Commissioner for Local Government, Saleh Kinjir, former member of the House of Assembly, Rhoda Bugi and others.

  • Navy hands over 20 suspects to EFCC

The Nigerian Navy has handed over 20 suspected  crude oil thieves  to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The hand over held at the command’s Forward Operating Base, Formoso, Brass, Bayelsa State.

Commanding Officer, FOB Formoso, Capt. Noel Madugu, said the suspects were arrested at Sangana River in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

He said the suspects comprising 18 Nigerians, one Camerounian and one Ghanaian were on board the vessel MV ELMINA.

He said during the arrest, the captain of the ship could not provide the relevant documents  to lift crude oil.

Madugu said the suspects said they were loading Automated Gas Oil (diesel), but when the products were tested, it was discovered to be crude oil.

Before the hand  over, he said  the culprits were arrested about 1.30am on August 7.

“About 1.30am, August 7, 2014, MV ELMINA was intercepted coming out of the creeks of Sangana River entrance in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

“The vessel and her crew were intercepted by NNS BOMADI while on routine patrol of the area.

“Upon arrest, the actions of the crew during interrogation indicated that they had carried out the dubious activity as they refused initially to answer their radio until several warning shots,” he said.

Adamawa governorship poll: Ribadu registers for PDP

    •Meets party chair Muazu

Former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, yesterday registered as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the party’s primaries to pick its candidate for the October governorship bye election in Adamawa State.

He was registered at Bako Ward in Yola South.

He was until now a member of the APC. He ran for president on the platform of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)

He is expected to pick the nomination form tomorrow in Yola.

His registration had been preceded by meetings with several PDP chieftains and lately with the party’s national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu.

Some party chieftains are rooting for Ribadu to fly the PDP flag in the October 11 bye-election to replace the impeached Governor Murtala Nyako.

Ribadu is also said to be banking on a presidential aide to push for a waiver for him to contest in the PDP primaries.

The number of PDP governorship aspirants has already increased to six, the latest being ex-Military Administrator of Lagos State, Gen. Buba Marwa; Dr. Umar Ardo, and Mr. Marcus Gundiri.

The nomination process closes on Tuesday sparking an intense horse-trading in the last 48 hours.

It was gathered that Muazu met Ribadu for some hours on Friday as part of the last minute moves to pressurise the ex-EFCC chairman to join the PDP.

Sources said that their discussions centered  on the need for waiver for Ribadu to enable him vie for the PDP governorship ticket.

Any defector to PDP is expected to fulfill mandatory two-year membership before aspiring for an elective office unless a waiver is granted by the party’s leadership.

A reliable source said: “I am aware that Muazu had a meeting with Ribadu on Friday. In fact, they went for Jumat Service together before holding talks on issues having to do with the latter’s invitation to PDP.

“This is not the first time the two leaders were meeting or discussing. But I think Friday’s talks had to do with the membership of PDP and the governorship slot of the party.

“It is normal when new entrants are being welcomed. Even some members of the House of Representatives who defected from APGA to PDP had audience with Muazu.

“But Adamawa’s case is peculiar. There has been pressure here and there on PDP and Ribadu. Some PDP members welcome Ribadu’s defection, some are vehemently opposed to him. There is division in the party on whether to grant Ribadu a waiver or not.”

The source said some forces , including a presidential aide, are pushing for a waiver for Ribadu.

The Presidential aide is currently out of the country.

Another source in Ribadu’s camp said the meeting was a normal consultative type in the present circumstance.

He said: “Irrespective of politics, Muazu and Ribadu are friends. We are talking of family bond spilling into politics. This background is necessary to clear some misgivings on the overtures to Ribadu to join PDP.

“Other than serving the state, Ribadu has made it known that he is not a desperado as being portrayed.”

.A third source added: “Since the PDP’s nomination form closes on August 19(Tuesday) , Ribadu has less than 48 hours to obtain governorship form.

A PDP National Secretariat source added: “ So far, six aspirants have obtained the form but we do not know whether they will all return the nomination form or not.”

EFCC arrests former bank manager for alleged N81m fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday said it arrested a former branch manager of one of the new generation banks, (Ecobank Plc), Victor Amushie, for alleged credit fraud of N81, 024, 749.28.

According to a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity of the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, the suspect was about relocating from the country when he was picked up.

The sattement said: “The suspect allegedly packaged loan facilities for himself, using several names and accounts of some customers of his bank, with whom he shared the proceeds.

“The loans went bad and the bank had to hold Amushie who was on the verge of running out of the country before being apprehended by operatives of the EFCC.

“Details of the loan disbursement showed that he granted a total sum of N57, 979, 024. 07 to Onezh Oil and Gas Limited; N11, 317, 562.73 to Esubeb Staff Multipurpose Cooperative and N11, 728, 162. 48 to Ogochukwu Amanda.

“Amushie is in the custody of the EFCC and will be charged to court as soon is investigation is concluded.”
