The Speaker said some of the landmark legislations passed in 2025 include the Ekiti State Local Content (Second Amendment) Law, which mandates the prioritisation of local businesses, artisans and workforce in government contracts, with at least 40 per cent of project execution reserved for Ekiti residents and resources.

Aribasoye also highlighted the Ekiti State Quality of Health Care Law, 2025, aimed at regulating the healthcare practice and curbing quackery across the state.

Other key laws passed include the Ekiti State Commercial Motorcycle Operators Regulatory Law, amendments to the Ekiti State Electoral Law and the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission Law, the Ekiti State College of Technology, Ijero-Ekiti Law, as well as the timely passage of 2026 Appropriation Law.

The Speaker said the legal framework would eliminate multiple taxation, curb unauthorised collections, block revenue leakages, and enhance the ease of doing business.

Aribasoye added that the Assembly’s performance was further reinforced by its emergence as the 2024 Best State Assembly in the ICT Integration Award winner from the Presidency.

The Speaker attributed the recognition to innovations such as live streaming of plenary sessions, digital voting, online television operations, and an upgraded website that enables public engagement

He added that the House is set to transition to a fully paperless legislative system and launch a parliamentary support mobile application in 2026.

Aribasoye commended his colleagues for their unwavering support, reaffirming the Seventh Assembly would sustain its reform drive and legislative productivity in the coming year.

FG begins distribution, installation of CNG kits in Ogun

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) on Saturday began inspection, distribution and installation of CNG kits to commercial motorists in Ogun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 500 CNG cylinders and kits were distributed to three centres in the state.

Speaking at one of the conversion centres in Abeokuta, Mr Olugboyegba Ademehin, Director, Vehicle Inspection Services, Ministry of Transportation, said the main concern was to first inspect vehicles that were fit for conversion.

Ademehin said that any vehicle certified okay for conversion would be given a kit for onward conversion.

He said that a total of 60 cylinders, comprising 10 units of 75 litres and 50 units of 65 litres cylinder kits would be distributed at the Ogun Public Works Agency, Agbeloba Centre.

According to him, the 75 litres cylinder can cover up to 150 kilometres journey.

He said that the centre would cater for other members of the public in the coming months.

Speaking on the safety, Ademehin said that the cylinders were moulded and not welded, hence, the thickness, which assured of its strength and fireproof properties.

He said that the cylinders, with 60 millimetres thickness, had been certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

The director said that there were two filling stations for the CNG in Abeokuta.

“We, in Ogun state, through the initiative of the governor, have begun conversion before now because we prioritise cleaner environment and that is why we have our CNG buses that have been plying the city.

“We didn’t even know that petrol will be this expensive, and CNG is cheap and cost effective for motorists, and of course, eases transportation costs for the masses,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Ali Manager, the Operations Manager of Nigerian Gas and Transport Solutions Ltd., noted that the gas industry was still being underutilised in Nigeria.

Manager expressed optimism that the CNG initiative would ensure that the country maximised the potential of natural gas resources it possessed.

“Nigeria is blessed with natural gas resources, but it has not fully maximised its potential to satisfy the needs of its citizens.

“CNG will also help the transport sector to deliver cost effective services to the people,” he said.

In his remarks, Alhaji Ismail Adewale, Chairman, National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ogun, commended the Federal Government for the initiative.

Adewale said that business had been slow with the hike in price of petrol and diesel, expressing optimism that “things will change in no time”.

He assured that with the use of CNG, the cost of transportation would be reduced, as they increasingly embrace the initiative.

  • Ekiti Assembly suspends local govt chairmen, councillors for alleged corruption

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has slammed an indefinite suspension on the 16 local government chairmen and 177 councillors for alleged financial misappropriation.

This resolution was reached yesterday at the Assembly’s plenary, where it also ordered the Auditor General of the local government to begin forensic audit of all accounts of the local government areas.

Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on the resolution of the Assembly, the Chairman of House Committee on Information and Leader of Government Business, Gboyega Aribisogan, said the action was in consonance with Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 82 of the Assembly’s Standing Order.

Aribisogan said the reports submitted by the Public Accounts Committee, which is statutorily saddled with probing the finances of the local governments, in line with Section 82 of the 1999 Constitution, alleged misappropriation, diversion and contract inflation.

The lawmaker said the Assembly could not overlook such infractions.

He said: “We worked on the documents and we realised that the council bosses went on their way to use direct labour for projects that go beyond their approval limits, making them conduit pipes to siphon the third tier of government.

“The ineptitude, corruption, misappropriation, diversion and outright looting discovered in the reports saddened us that the third tier of government was badly managed by these local government elected officials. They showed that they were there to promote their interests and not that of the people.

“Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution stipulates that the House of Assembly shall make laws for the good governance and operations of the councils, including agencies not contained on the Exclusive List.

“We hereby resolve that the chairmen of the 16 local government areas, their appointed officials and all councillors be placed on an indefinite suspension to pave way for a forensic audit of the accounts, for their continued stay in office will obstruct the course of investigation.

“The suspended officials should hand over government properties in their possession to the Directors of Administration.

“We also resolved that appropriate sanctions will be meted out to erring elected or appointed and career officers that are found culpable in the misapplication, misappropriation and diversion of public funds.”

He added: “We saw cases of over-invoicing and contract inflation and there were evidence of how contracts were awarded to families and their cronies.

“We are not going to spare anyone, including the career officers. Whoever is culpable will be sanctioned. But they have the liberty to go to court to challenge our action.”

Aribisogan dispelled the rumour that the local government officials offered the Assembly N8 million bribe to stave off suspension.

The committee chairman said only members of the committee carried out the oversight function.

“On the issue of whether they were coerced or pressured or persuaded to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not concern the Assembly. What we are after is ensuring that government money is preserved and spent appropriately,” he said.
