“On Monday, January 29, 2024, these criminals carried out a dastardly attack in the Oke-Ako area in Ikole Local Government Area resulting in the death of two traditional rulers: the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti Oba Olatunji Samuel Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti Oba David Babatunde Ogunsola and leaving a host of others with life-threatening injuries.

“This is not an isolated event, as in the past few days alone, a commercial driver was killed between Ayedun and Ayebode by armed bandits, and just yesterday, a school bus load of students were abducted in Emure Ekiti and their whereabouts is still unknown.

“The late Onimojo was an intellectual and highly intelligent historian and orator who always spoke truth to power. The late Elesun was a peace-loving king who was very hands-on in the development of Esun-Ayedun communities.

He further stated: “Because of the topography of the area and the bad roads, there has been an incursion of murderous elements who parade themselves as herdsmen leading to heightened insecurity. The entire people of Imojo in Oye local government and Esun in Ikole Local Government and the entire state have been thrown into mourning on account of the loss of our highly revered traditional rulers who were forces for community development, peace, and stability in the constituency and the entire state.

“The Nigeria Army has a military outpost on the road, which has been non-functional, as they only patrol on Tuesdays, leaving the communities exposed for the rest of the days”.

Following his motion, the House asked the Chief of Army Staff to redeploy military personnel to the outpost along the Oke-Ako area to enhance security and forestall a repeat of these beastly acts.

The House also asked the Inspector General of Police, the Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, and other security agencies to deploy more men to Ekiti North 1 and ensure that those who carried out that dastardly acts are fished out and brought to justice.

It asked the Ministry of Works and FERMA to immediately rehabilitate the Ayedun to Irele road, and other roads in the federal constituency, while asking security agencies to put all measures in place to rescue the school children and teachers in Emure Ekiti.

The incident followed the killing of two traditional rulers in the state; the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Samuel Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsola who were killed in an ambush by armed men while returning from a meeting.

However, the third traditional ruler, the Alara of Ara–Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba escaped the attack.

Ekiti state governor, Biodun Oyebanji, who condemned the dastardly act, ordered security operatives in the state to fish out the killers of the two traditional rulers and assured the people of the state that the government would spare nothing to get to the root of the matter.

Killing of traditional rulers: Ekiti group demands signing of Hunters Bill, seeks Ooni’s intervention

Ekiti Parapo Renaissance Movement (EPRM), a group made up of youths from the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State,  has condemned the killing of two traditional, the Elesun of Esun Ekiti and Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti on Monday by suspected bandits.

The traditional rulers were attacked with the Alara of Ara Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Fatoba who however escaped death.

They were said to be travelling on the Oke-Ako Road in Ikole local government area in a car driven by Alara on their way back from a security meeting at Irele Ekiti.

The attackers were said to have taken their belongings and dragged their bodies into the bush.

Also on Monday, some school children were reportedly kidnapped in Eporo Ekiti, Emure LGA as the armed men ambushed a school bus.

Rising from an emergency meeting Tuesday morning at the Spring View Hotel, Ado Ekiti, EPRM condemned the killing of the traditional rulers and abduction of school children in their state.

In a statement by its national president, Comrade Oladapo Bamidele Tosin, EPRM said it was getting by the day, that because of insufficient manpower and other logistics constraints, the various security agencies in the country are overwhelmed by the many sponsored terror groups attacking different parts of Nigeria, especially South West Nigeria.

Tosin said that in the interim, the only visible solution to the worsening insecurity in Nigeria is the deployment of hunters into the forests, farms and bushes across the country, and that the personnel to be so deployed should be indigenes of the communities who should know the local terrains.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to sign the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) Bill into law and sought the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, to lead other traditional rulers, especially from the South West on a mission to accomplish it, as according to him, that would be the best way to secure their communities.

He also alleged that those sponsoring terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other nefarious activities as well as those benefitting from them are resisting the signing of the NHFSS Bill into law, saying the enemies of Nigeria are afraid that their evil business would end if hunters are empowered and unleashed to secure forests, bushes and farms across the country.

He said- “Rising from an emergency meeting this morning, which centered on the killing on Monday, of two of our most respected monarchs, the Elesun of Esun Ekiti and Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti who were shot dead by suspected herdsmen as well as the abduction of innocent school children from a local school in Ekiti State, we hereby condemn, in strong terms, these killings and abductions in the South West of Nigeria, especially in Ekiti State.

“We call on the federal government, through the various security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, rescue the innocent pupils and to go after the killers of our traditional rulers, apprehend them and bring them to book.

“We also seize this opportunity of mourning in Ekiti State, to call Yoruba people of South West, to rise up to the occasion and protect our motherland. Our leaders, governors, senators, representatives and traditional rulers should provide leadership and save our people through improved security measures.”

According to EPRM, various reports from the Nigeria Police, the Army, Civil Defence and other security agencies have it that over 90 percent of those abducting, raping and killing people of the South West are from outside the region. It therefore means that an indigenous approach to security is the answer to the challenge.

“As it stands how, the only solution we can see, is to employ and empower young men and women from each community to secure their local areas. This is because it is only the people in the community that understand their terrain and can identify the criminals among them. That way, it would be easy to identify strangers and criminals.

“In appreciation of those facts, we are in support of the President’s position to set up peculiar agency that would specialise in fighting crimes that are planned and executed within and around the forests, farms and bushes.

“We believe that when that Bill is signed into law, the organization is expected to recruit personnel from local communities to secure their area and their states.

“Apart from helping to tackle insecurity, the engagement of these young people would engender massive employment which in itself, is one of the best means to tackle crimes.

“It is on that note that we call on His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife and other traditional rulers in the country, to rally round and support the signing of the NHFSS Bill into law as that would be the best way to secure their communities,” EPRM stated.

Ekiti okays restructuring of road to avert demolition

Ekiti State Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, has assured residents of Iworoko, Are and Afao Ekiti that the Ekiti Ring Road Phase One has been restructured, to avert demolition of houses.

Olatunbosun, who gave the assurance in Ado Ekiti, stressed the commitment of the Governor Biodun Oyebanji administration to the well-being of the people, while developing the state.

He said the government would not do anything that might jeopardise the economy, peace and tranquility of the people.

The commissioner, however, stressed that government would not compromise on standards, noting that going by international best practices, a ring road is a road or a series of connected roads encircling a town, city or country.

He said the most common purpose of a ring road was to assist in reducing traffic volumes in the urban centre by offering an alternate route around the city for drivers who did not need to stop in the city core.

According to him, the focus is to develop the state and improve the lot of the people, using efficient techniques, methods, processes or technology to contain the waste and keep people and the environment safe.

Lawmaker representing Oye Constituency II in Ekiti State House of Assembly, Idowu Odebunmi, has praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for road projects.

The lawmaker said the road infrastructure policy would transform the economy, create jobs and boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

He lauded the diligent pace at which the Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki dual carriage way and return of contractor handling Itapa-Omu-Ijelu road were prosecuted.

Odebunmi, who took a tour of the projects, said beside the two roads, the Ring Road between Iworoko-Are-Afao- Igbemo to the Cargo Airport will expose towns in that axis to opportunities.

“The Itapa-Omu-Ijelu road, which falls within my constituency, was awarded before inception of this government, but was abandoned by the contractor. But Oyebanji has directed the contractor back to site. The road leads to agricultural zone and I know farming will be more enhanced in that axis when completed…’’

On the proposed 1.2km flyover between Okeyinmi and Ijigbo roundabouts in Ado-Ekiti, Odebunmi said the project would decongest the capital’s Business District of traffic logjam and add aesthetic value.

“This project is not misplaced. I think the benefit outweighs the demerit. That area is Ado Ekiti business centre. We have Erekesan Market, banks, and business centres, which often resulted in regular traffic hold up…”

Ekiti varsity VC seeks increased funding for varsities

The Vice Chancellor of the Ekiti state University (EKSU) Ado-Ekiti, Prof. Edward Olanipekun has called on government to increase funding for the universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.

Olanipekun who made the appeals while addressing journalists, lamented the country’s institutions are being faced with protracted financial challenges which has continued to affect their operations.

He said that Nigeria with its increasing population needs more  universities in order to measure up the candidates who applied for University education on yearly basis but could not be admitted due to limited space.

Olanipekun said: “As I speak, we don’t have enough tertiary institutions in the country to accommodate teeming applicants who are craving for university education. Looking at the available statistics, less than 10 percent of students writing UTME yearly are lucky to secure admission into the available ones.

“I think establishing universities is good but funding them is something that is germane. And that has been a recurring issue that is leading to an imbroglio between the government and the staff unions.

“This is an issue that the government has to look into seriously on how it can be addressed. There are still other challenges the Universities are facing in Nigeria which include accommodation for the students on campus.

“It will be nice having almost all students residing on the campus. There is a dearth of infrastructure in the available universities and having more is not a problem but they must be well funded. Conscious efforts must be made by governments to fund education, especially at the tertiary level.”

He said the institution under his watch as the VC in the almost five years have recorded landmark successes in the education and entrepreneur aspect, adding that the graduates being churned out are making headway in their respective careers.

“I also don’t subscribe to the idea of a graduate study to be looking for white- collar-jobs. Things have changed over time. It is no longer the certificate one is carrying that can only bring food to the table, you can do other things after graduation to become an employer of labour.

“To bridge that gap, our university has a very good and robust entrepreneurship study center, where all the students will at least learn one skill or the other before they graduate.

“And is compulsory for every student. We have quite a number of activities going on there, which can make them self-reliant and independent. We thank the Tetfund for providing the needed fund for equipping the center.

“Talking about food security, it is something that must be taken seriously, because without food security there will be problems. If we are not able to feed ourselves there are bound to be challenges.

“Senate in its wisdom has just decided that, henceforth, all our students should take as a compulsory course an art of agriculture. In other words, they must have a grasp of something that has to do with agriculture.

“So, the curriculum is being put together by the faculty of Agricultural Sciences and as soon as that is concluded, it will be rolled out. We know the importance of food security, particularly in our present society and there is no way it’ll occupy the back seat.

“So, in terms of entrepreneurship, we are ensuring that all our graduates master one skill or the other before they leave the university.

“The university is ready to support them to acquire facilities that would enable them to set up their own businesses after graduation. It is compulsory that all the students, including medical students, learn one skill depending on their time. Some can even learn two or more.”
