  • INEC swears in seven new RECs

Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has sworn in seven new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) bringing the total number of serving RECs in the commission to 33.

Performing the ceremony on Tuesday in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, expressed confidence that the new RECs would contribute to the commission’s determination to make 2019 general elections the best in the country.

He said “with the track records of service in the academia, public service and private sector, it is gratifying to note that the new RECs made positive contributions to the society in various ways.

“I am equally delighted to note that some of you have managed elections at national level as RECs.

“I am confident that you will bring to bear on your new assignments, the experience of the recent past that will contribute to our determination to make the 2019 general elections our best elections in Nigeria.”

Yakubu advised the new commissioners to maintain openness and consultations, as well as be firm and courageous in carrying out their new assignments.

The chairman disclosed that in addition to the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections, the commission would be conducting four bye-elections this year to fill vacancies.

These, according to him, include Takum state constituency in Taraba, Lokoja/Koton-Karfe Federal Constituency in c, Bauchi South Senatorial District, and Kastina North Senatorial District in Kastina State.

The INEC boss reassured newly registered voters in the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration ( CVR ) of getting their Permanent Voter Cards ( PVCs ) before the 2019 general elections.

He added that “we have consistently reassured the public that for those who registered in 2017, their PVCs would be available for collection in the first week of May 2018.

“Those who registered in the first quarter of this year, that is between January and March, as well as those who are registering right now in the second quarter of this year, would collect their cards thereafter.”

Yakubu also reassured the public and those who applied for replacement of their PVCs that their cards would be available for collection before the 2019 general elections.

“For those who registered in Ekiti and Osun in 2017 and 2018, priority attention was given to the production of their PVCs, such that all the cards would be available ahead of the July 14 and Sept. 22 governorship elections,’’ he said.

Responding on behalf of the new RECs, Mr Segun Agbaje, representing Ekiti State, pledged the new commissioner’s readiness to justify the confidence reposed in them.

He said “by the grace of God, we shall finish well.”

He expressed confidence in the leadership of Yakubu, saying “with your style of leadership, we would
not be surprised if 2019 elections turned out to be the best elections in the country.”

The new RECs are: Mr Baba Yusuf and Mr Segun Agbaje, representing Borno and Ekiti states for second term.

Others are Dr Uthman Ajidagba, Kwara;  Yahaya Bello, Nasarawa State; Dr Emmanuel Hart, Rivers; Mohammed Ibrahim, Gombe and Dr Cyril Omorogbe, Edo.

  • Ekiti wants voters’ registration extended

The Ekiti State Government has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the duration of the voters registration.

The Head of Service, Olugbenga Faseluka, made the call when he went round the local government areas to monitor the exercise.

Describing the turnout as impressive, Faseluka said the time frame for the exercise would be grossly inadequate to accommodate all eligible voters waiting to be captured.

According to him, it took about seven minutes to register one voter, which led to a huge number of spill-over of people at the close of the exercise each day. He added that it would have been more conducive if the exercise had been extended till 5pm daily.

Faseluka said the government will follow up on the complaints and requests of stakeholders, particularly on the creation of additional polling units in some areas.

The head of service, who stressed that the sensitisation/monitoring programme was apolitical, emphasised that the focus was to secure the future of Ekiti as an entity, adding that the exercise was to allow those that relocated to transfer their cards, replace damaged cards, and allow new voters to register.

Governor Ayodele Fayose declared last Friday a work-free day for workers and directed senior civil servants to mobilise and monitor the exercise in their respective localities to ensure that as many eligible people as possible register.

The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu, and the Council Chairman Aderemi Ayeni, appealed for the establishment of more polling units in the council to forestall a disenfranchisement of many people residing at Obasanjo Estate, Shasha Market and other settlements along the Ikere/Ado road.

The Arakaja of Igbara-Odo, Oba Edward Jayeola, who said the community organised a house-to-house sensitisation for unregistered eligible voters to do so before the end of the exercise, called for additional registration machines to ease the process and allow all interested eligible voters to register within the specified time frame.

  • I will tackle unemployment in Ekiti, says aspirant

An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant for the coming election in Ekiti State, Mrs. Yaya Kolade, has said she will tackle unemployment if she becomes the governor.

Kolade, who spoke at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja yesterday, said she would create jobs for youths, adding that she was in the race to improve people’s well-being.

She said if elected, her administration would improve health care standard to make it be at par with that of Lagos State. “I’ve already put in place, long and short term plans to develop Ekiti and better people’s lives,” Mrs. Kolade added.

She said she would ensure women emancipation, noting that although she did not have a political godfather, she was not threatened by any political bigwig.

The aspirant hoped that she would get the party´s ticket at the primary election slated for May 5.

She said she had the backing of women and generality of the people.

  • Fayemi will restore Ekiti’s lost glory, says group

A group, the Just Keep Following Group (JKFG), has welcomed the decision of the  Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to run for governor in Ekiti State.

The Coordinator, Comrade Bisi Dada, and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Victor Irewolede, said Fayemi’s return will bring progress to the state.

The group said Fayemi’s entry will enrich the governorship race and give him an opportunity to offer his service to the people.

The group noted that the Minister  would be seeking the nomination of his party, the All progressives Congress (APC) after the lifting of ban by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The association expressed appreciation to the interest groups, which mounted pressure on Fayemi to take another shot at the governorship poll.

It noted that those who mounted pressure on Fayemi to contest to include politicians, labour movement, youths,  students, women groups, artisans, civil servants, among others.

JKFG urged the APC delegates to vote for Fayemi during the primary.

The group expressed confidence that the minister would win the  poll, if fielded as his party’s flag bearer.

It stated: “Dr Fayemi, in agreeing to view for the governorship post again has promised to surpass his achievements of his first tenure.

“He will continue to enhance the welfare of all civil servants and teachers through payment of special allowances to teachers and all categories of workers.

“He has also reiterated that the social security scheme for the aged will bounce back.

“It is on this note that we solicit the support of all teachers, civil servants, the youth and all people of the state in making Dr Kayode Fayemi the preferred candidate in the forthcoming general election.

  • Ojo declares for governor

AN Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Mr. Kayode Ojo, has informed party executives of his ambition to contest for .

The aspirant, who hails from Ikoro-Ekiti, Ekiti Central Senatorial District, said he has not  stepped down for any contender, adding that his agenda focuses on agriculture, health, education, infrastructure and human capital development.

He said his administration would ensure  capacity development and entrepreneurial skills of the youth.

Ojo noted that the gap in the political space was staggering.

The politician also informed the party leaders that he would work hard to shore up the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), to make the state depend less on federal allocation.

Ojo added: “With support, we will bring our experience and expertise to bear in the development of our fatherland.

“It is our duty to salvage our state from the current peril imposed on us by the present administration in the state.”

Responding, the state APC Deputy chairman Kemisola Olaleye, said Ojo’s record will speak for him as the primary election approaches.

She described Ojo as a loyal party man who has assisted the party financially in the past promising that a credible primary would be organised to elect a candidate.

  • Fayemi notifies APC leaders, public on interest to run for Ekiti governorship

Dr Kayode Fayemi, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, has notified the national and state leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC) of his ambition to run for July 14, governorship election in Ekiti.

Mr Olayinka Oyebode, Special Assistant on Media to the minister, disclosed in a statement on Thursday in Abuja that letters had been written to elders of the party, prominent citizens and traditional rulers in Ekiti.

Fayemi, the immediate past Governor of Ekiti, in the letter, which he personally signed, also disclosed that his public declaration for the gubernatorial contest would come up at a rally in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday, April 14.

Some prominent names to which the letters were addressed include, National Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande.

Others are, all traditional rulers in Ekiti State, his colleagues in the Federal Executive Council (FEC), former and serving governors elected on APC platform, as well as prominent sons and daughters of Ekiti.

The Minister had on April 2 hinted on his plan to run for the party’s ticket during the quarterly meeting of the Ekiti APC leaders at his Isan Ekiti country home.

Ahead of the Saturday’s public declaration, the Minister had undertaken a tour of the 16 local government areas of the state, where he held meetings with local government and ward executives among others.

Fayemi, in the letter, said his decision to join the governorship race was to join other patriots to rescue the state from the grip of the current insensitive and incompetent PDP-led administration.

He said that the PDP-led administration has plunged the state and its people into unimaginable misery and poverty.

“My mission in public life which has always cantered on transforming the material conditions of our people has always revolved around three imperatives.

“The three imperatives are breaking the yoke of ignorance keeping our people down; liberating them from ill-health and other limitations that restrained them from achieving their potentials.

“While the third one is breaking the stranglehold of poverty which keeps people from living full creative lives.

“In practical and policy terms, this for me has always meant prioritising social investments in education, healthcare and other social interventions that reduce the cost of living, while raising the quality of life,’’ he said.

According to him, public office is too serious to be left to charlatans.

He said when men and women of good conscience that are committed to the ideals of social justice and the common good turn away from politics, that pave way for unprincipled opportunists to take power.

“My convictions about how much more is possible in Ekiti stem not from any sense of entitlement but from a sense of service of obligation and posterity that positioned us for a time like this.

“There is much that we have to repair and redress in Ekiti before we can go forward.’’

The minister’s central message at various meetings during the tour dwelled on the need for all APC members to unite to successfully confront and defeat the incumbent PDP government in the state, come July 14. (NAN)

  • APC chieftains defect to PDP in Ekiti

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  in Ayetoro-Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area  of Ekiti State.

The defectors tore their  membership cards and burnt their brooms as a mark of exit from their former party.

They were led by former APC Deputy Chairmanin in Ido/Osi Council, Mr James Afolabi, and the Obanla of Ayetoro, High Chief Joseph Olaiya.

They were received into the PDP by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola; House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Kola Oluwawole and Assembly member representing Ido/Osi Constituency 11, Mr. Abiola Jeje.

The defectors said they were impressed with what they called “developmental strides of Governor Ayo Fayose,” promising to work for the election  of his “anointed candidate,” Olusola.

They claimed that the APC lacked internal democracy, adding that  the PDP, which is better organised, will give members the opportunity for participatory democracy.

On of the defectors, Oluwole Gbenga, said he left the APC for thePDP because of the people-oriented programmes of the Fayose administration.

Olaiya said the Fayose administration has impacted positively had more positive impact on the life of people at the grassroots than the previous administrations.

Olaiya said: “I am defecting because I have seen the efforts of the PDP. The purposeful government the PDP is giving the state is one of the factors that enticed me to cross over from the APC to the PDP.”

A member of the House of Assembly representing Ido/Osi Constituency 11, Hon.  Jeje, explained that the defectors were thrilled by the good works of the Fayose administration.

Jeje noted that the defectors voluntarily defected to join the “moving train of the Ayo Fayose” to attract more developmental projects to their area.

The lawmaker lauded the step taken by new members of the party, adding that they would be accorded the rights and privileges enjoyed by old members of the party.

Prof. Olusola, who received the defectors on behalf of the party leadership, pointed out that there is no discrimination in the PDP.

He said the defectors would be integrated into the party.

According to him, the PDP stands for light and development, adding that the defectors left the APC, which he accused of “plunging Ekiti into debts.”

Olusola, who also spoke on education sector, explained that the sector was in distress before Fayose came to revive it.

This, he said, was evident in the ranking of the state at the senior secondary school’s examination where the state came first.

Olusola urged the people to work for continuity by retaing the PDP in power in Ekiti state.

  • Osun, Kogi, Ekiti most peaceful states, says report

Osun State is the most peaceful in the country, according to a report on Nigeria Peace Index (NPI).

It is closely followed by Kogi and Ekiti States, according to the report.

According to NPI, Kwara and Imo ranked as fourth and fifth respectively in the rating.

The inaugural peace index report put together by the Foundation for Peace Professionals, a research organisation that advocates for peace, adopted similar methodology of the Global Peace Index.

It also followed the pattern of the United States Peace Index and the United Kingdom Peace index in series of national indexes.

Speaking at the unveiling of the report in Abuja, the Executive Director of FPP, Abdulrazaq Hamzat, explained in attempting to rate the level of peace in Nigeria, NPI investigated the extent to which states experience social, economic, political and environmental factors that either hinder or promote peace.

He said: “We collected data for 2010 to 2016, an average of which gives us the result of Nigeria peace Index 2017.

“Five broad indicators were adopted for this index and they include the level of poverty crime rate, level of education, rate of human rights abuse and level of Incarceration.

“Key findings of the NPI showed that Osun State is the most peaceful state in Nigeria and it has greater tendency for peace based on its overall performance in the five broad indicators. While Osun didn’t come top in any of the five indicators, its overall score is the least violent.

“Osun, Kogi, Ekiti, Kwara and Imo States are five most peaceful states in Nigeria.

“Kogi is second most peaceful state in Nigeria and most peaceful in the North. Imo is the most peaceful state in South-East and fifth most peaceful in Nigeria.

“Akwa Ibom is most peaceful state in South-South, Kaduna in North-West, Kogi in North Central, Osun in South-West, Imo in South-East and Taraba State in North-East.”

The report stated that Yobe Kebbi, Bauchi, Zamfara and Sokoto were five least peaceful states in Nigeria, adding this was apart from Borno that was not considered due to insufficient data and the Boko Haram red light.

The report therefore assumed that Borno was overall least peaceful.

It said Lagos had least poverty in Nigeria while Zamfara had least crime and Imo the most education.

The NPI noted that Ekiti had least incarceration and Taraba had least human rights abuses, adding that the North-West with least education and most poverty in Nigeria was one of the two least peaceful regions in the country despite being most performing in the other three indicators.

  • Fayemi set to change game in Ekiti

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, is set to join the governorship race in Ekiti State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports that his entry into the race may alter previous calculations by other aspirants.

The waiting game has ended. The suspense is over.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development and former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, is set to join the governorship race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He told reporters in his Isan-Ekiti country home that he was throwing his hat into the governorship ring. But, he said he would declare his intention at a later date.

The minister had earlier hosted the quarterly meeting of APC stakeholders at his Eyiyato residence. The meeting was attended by party officers from wards, local governments, senatorial districts and the state. He hosted them in his capacity as the state party leader.

The Easter meeting was strategic. It was full of drama. Party members  attested to the fact that Fayemi “spoke like a real politician for the first time” by chanting some political slangs and sending a warning signal to Governor Ayo Fayose and his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) about his rediness to bounce back.

The way and manner Fayemi spoke made the crowd to request him to declare his ambition. But, the minister, who did not want run foul of the law, only gave a hint.  He said he will wait until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) blows the whistle.

Fayemi said he will defeat Fayose and his preferred candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

He warned Fayose not to attempt to remove or destroy his campaign posters and billboards as he is doing to other opposition contenders.

But, asked to make a ctegorical statement, Fayemi said he will first visit the party secretariat when the  umpire lifts ban on open campaign.

Fayemi explained that the pangs of poverty, frustrations and misery of Ekiti people, and not his personal ambition, have motivated him to join the race.

Whether Fayemi would run or not has become a big issue for long. Party members, ostensibly promoting the ambition of other aspirants, accuse him of “selfishness,” saying that it was morally wrong for him to seek the governor’s seat again.  They said Fayemi should “stay in Abuja” and allow the emergence of a new face as the flag bearer.

But, others see nothing wrong in Fayemi’s ambition. They are of the opinion that he has the constitutional right to contest, having done one term, which ended in 2014.

The second school of thought believes that “there is no morality in politics” and that every aspirant who shows interest should be allowed to  test his popularity on the field and woo delegates at the primary.

Fayemi told reporters: “Do you need a rocket scientist to tell you that I am running? I was very clear that I am a process person. I am not going to jump the gun because there are rules and guidelines for electioneering.

“The body that is responsible for that has stated the obvious when you can actually start campaign. The fact that people are actually flouting the guidelines is a fault of INEC and INEC is not taking them up on it.

“That is my own attitude to it and at appropriate time, I will tell my party because this is purely a party matter. It is not a public matter yet.

“So, I don’t really understand the level of curiosity; whether I am running or I am not running. I am very clear that what we have in this state today is not what this state deserves.

“I have always been very clear that whatever it takes constitutionally, legally and legitimately to put our party in office in October 2018, we will do as a party.

“I have also gone ahead to say this meeting is our usual gathering; it is not a place to declare the intention to run, but as to whether I am running or not, I am running.

“That is not debatable. But, I am a process person, I am not going to flout the law. You will know, you will all be invited when I decide to formally declare within the ambit of the guideline issued by INEC.”

Also reacting to the allegations that he would not get the votes of Ekiti workers, especially teachers, because he had dealt with them in his first term, the debt profile of Ekiti and the abandoned projects.

Fayemi said: “I dealt with teachers very well and they never experienced the kind of positive support from any government as they did when I was in office.

“For the first time in the state, teachers had their salaries raised three times within the period of three years. And for the very first time in the whole of Southwest, Ekiti teachers benefited, and I hope they are still benefiting, from a rural teachers’  allowance, which is twenty five percent of their salary.

“They also benefited from core subject allowance, which is another 25 per cent of their salaries. So,  50 percent of their basic salaries come to them as allowances, if you are teaching a core subjects teacher like English, Mathematics and Integrated Science or if you are serving in a place like Isan-Ekiti, which by our definition is rural area, you get an additional stipend because you are not in the city.”

Reacting to the White Paper issued by the Fayose government, which  banned him from holding public office for 10 years, Fayemi said the said White Paper cannot stop his ambition, describing the document as the final result of months of political witch-hunting by the Ayo Fayose administration that cannot stand the test of time.

“Regardless of whatever anybody may think, I know I am eminently qualified to contest the election. If I am not qualified, I would never have come to tell you I want to contest

“Most of the negative things Fayose and his government said or alleged of me were deliberately concocted out of malice to either malign my character or score cheap political goal but the truth will always prevail.

“Same goes for the manipulated debt profile of the state which was a clear case of exaggeration and distortions

“Can you imagine, Fayose said he issued White Paper banning me from holding public office, but today, I am giving him red card. By the end of the gubernatorial poll, we will know who is right between the two of us.”

Fayemi expressed gratitude to party leaders, led by the APC Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, for their sacrifice in keeping the party together.

He said the quarterly meeting was not an avenue to declare governorship ambition but to rejoice together in the spirit of Easter and deliberate on ways to move the party forward.

Fayemi called for unity among party members to ensure victory at the poll. He appealed to those he may have wronged in the past to forgive him, adding that he has forgiven those who offended him.

He said: “We have been holding this quarterly meeting, this is not the first time but this meeting is different. The reason why it is different is that we are celebrating Easter and the last one we held was during Christmas.

“This is Easter. Ekiti is about to resurrect; peace, jobs, food and other good things are coming back to Ekiti.

“When we called this meeting, some has been insinuating that it will be used for declaration of ambition. I am a party leader, I am a party leader and I don’t violate party rules and it is not out of fear.

“If Fayemi says he is ready to do something, he will not do it secretly. I will come to the party secretariat, I will come there and tell our leaders elected to run the affairs of the party.

“INEC has just released election notice. They said public campaign begins in Ekiti State on April 14. Let us wait till then, whether we are sure of ourselves or not, we will know then.

“I am a member of the government. I will not violate the constitution. I will not violate the Electoral Act. I follow due process. When the time comes, I will enlist your support.”

Fayemi added: “The most important task for us is to regain our rights that were wrongfully taken away from us.

By the grace of God, all those LCDAs are coming back and all of you will go back to represent your people.

“We created EKSTMA, Peace Corps, Social Security stipends for the aged, youths in commercial agriculture, youth volunteer scheme, we constructed roads, markets, hospitals, palaces, town halls and we paid bursaries. Where are all these again?

“The money coming to Ekiti now is double of what we received when we were in government and there is nothing to justify what the present government is receiving.

“They are using thugs to intimidate our people and somebody said yesterday that he has a White Paper but I have a Red Card. We will know which is more potent between a White Paper and a Red Card.

“For our red card to be effective, we must be disciplined; some of us talk as if they are spies in our party to allow these impostors in government to wreak more havoc.

“There is nobody that has been privileged to head a government that will not offend people. I have learnt my lessons since I left. Those that I offended, I beg you to forgive me and those that offended me, I have forgiven you.

“Whoever that our party elects as candidate,we should all support him because we must take that Okebareke (Government House) back. The most important task to me and true progressives is that we must take over government in Ekiti.

“Party members desist from abusing themselves, whoever you support, you are free to advertise your candidate. Don’t run down other aspirants; tell others what your candidate will do for the people,

    their children, youth and others.

“Ekiti election will not be won on Twitter, WhatsApp or Facebook, it will be won at the polling units, election will not be won on the social media because the election oracle (Ifa) is at the polling units.

“When the primary comes up on May 5, Chief Oyegun swore to us that there will be no rigging at the Ekiti APC primary and it will be peaceful, transparent, open, free and fair.

“You saw the Lagos APC presidential primary that I presided over which brought President Buhari to power. After the Ekiti primary, whoever emerges will be candidate.

“Spread the gospel that this is what they said at Isan. Your PVC in one hand, your Red Card in the other hand. We don’t warn our primary to be crisis-ridden, we are ready to support the winner.”

The entry of Fayemi into the race  is expected to change the complexion of the battle for the party’s ticket.

Fayemi has advantage of being a serving minister and a friend to many of the APC governors. But, other aspirants are expected to give him a run for his money. The element of surprise cannot be ruled out in a shadow poll.

He is expected to slug it out with his predecessor, Chief Segun Oni; former Deputy Senate Chief Whip Gbenga Aluko; Presidential Adviser on Political Matters Senator Babafemi Ojudu; former House of Representatives members Hon. Bimbo Daramola, Bamidele Faparusi and Opeyemi Bamidele; Dr. Wole Oluleye, Chief Diran Adesua, Hon. Femi Bamisile, Ishola Fapounda, Yinka Akerele, Muyiwa Olumilua, and Mr. Kola Alabi.

The leaders of the APC have a tough assignment on their hands to ensure a free and fair shadow poll and prevent a post-primary crisis.

  • 218,000 PVCs still not collected in Ekiti – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) in Ekiti on Wednesday said that 218,000 Permanent Voter Cards ( PVCs ) were yet to be collected in the state.

The commission said this just as it formally issued a “Notice of Election”, which stated that the governorship election would hold in the state on July 14.

It said that this was in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Law.

The INEC’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Alhaji Taiwo Gbadegesin, disclosed this at a public enlightenment forum in Ado Ekiti.

He, however, said that not less than 500,000 PVCs had far been collected by their owners.

Gbadegesin advised those who were yet to pick their PVCs to do so, saying that they would be disenfranchised during the forthcoming election without the PVCs.

He said that the 500,000 PVCs already collected by would-be voters did not put an end to those that would be qualified to vote in July.

He said that the PVCs for those that registered between April 2017 and date  were yet to be delivered to the state from its national headquarters in Abuja.

The INEC image-maker said that the cards would be distributed to their owners as soon as they were delivered to the Ekiti State office of INEC.

Gbadegesin said that university students and youth corps members, who had completed their stay in the state and had since left, might be those who had not collected their PVCs.

Alternatively, he said that the commission was also suspecting persons who might have done double registration.

They might be afraid that they could be arrested if they showed-up at the state office of INEC for collection, he said.

Gbadegesin said that the commission would still sensitise would-be voters ahead of the election.

The PRO also called on the various political parties to sensitize their followers and party members on the need for them to collect their PVCs.
