Fashola: Fed Govt will repair its roads in Ekiti

The Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has said the Federal Government will soon begin the repairs of its roads in Ekiti State.

Fashola spoke at the weekend during a fact-finding visit to some roads President Muhammadu Buhari approved recently for repairs in the state.

He said it was the resolve of the Buhari administration that all federal roads must be made motorable to Nigerians.

Represented by the Southwest Zonal Director in the ministry, Mr. Emmanuel Adeoye, the minister said priority would be given to the Federal road linking Ifaki Ekiti and Ikole Ekiti road network.

Fashola said most of the roads currently witnessing major repairs had long been awarded but their repairs stalled due to non-receipt of further mobilisation by contractors.

The minister said the government’s concern for those using the roads made it to consider the return of contractors to sites, after paying them the due mobilisation.

He urged motorists to use the roads well, adding that the residents should avoid illegal activities, such as cutting the roads or setting bonfire on them to guarantee their durability.

Also, the representative of Kopek Construction Company, the contractor handling the Iwaraja-Erinmo-Efon federal road axis rehabilitation project, Mr. Pascal Harfouch said the contract was originally awarded to his company since 2011 at a total cost of N3.5b.

He said the job which covers a distance of 21.8 kilometre was stalled as a result of unpaid certificates amounting to over N1 billion.

However, he said the company had to return to site to complete the job, having received mobilisation from the Buhari-led government.

This was coming just as he called for an upward review of the contract sum which he said was no longer in tune with the economic realities of the present day Nigeria.

Welcoming the team, the Vice Chairman of Ado-Ekiti branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Olumide Ogundipe and the state’s head of the ministry, Mr. Ezekiel Kehinde, said they would continue to monitor the progress of work on the project which they said had reached over 86 percent completion stage.

    ‘Fayose has misruled Ekiti’

Former Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Bode Olowoporoku has described the construction of N14.5 billion flyover by Governor Ayo Fayose as a “misplacement of priority.”

Olowoporoku, who spoke in his Ilawe-Ekiti country home after hosting his supporters, said the multi billion naira flyover could not be justified, amidst “acute and unprecedented hunger in the state.”

He said the money spent on the construction of the bridge should have been ploughed into agriculture, tourism and investment in human capital.

The former senator, who represented Ekiti South District between 2003 and 2007, has signified intent to run for the governor on the platform of Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN).

He expressed concern that many people in Ekiti go to bed hungry promising that an MPN government would make food available to them if voted into power.

Olowoporoku explained that the fight against hunger, poverty and unemployment would be a cardinal policy of his administration if elected governor. The veteran politician explained that he would tackle the problems with huge investment in agriculture with a policy he described as the “Agric Revolution.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Group backs consesus option in APC

Ekiti 2018: Group backs consesus option in APC

An interest group in  the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, ‘Ekiti Kete Good Citizens Association,’ has said it would support the emergence of a flag bearer through the consensus option.

The body said the consensus option would mitigate the post-primary crisis in the party after the exercise.

The party has 32 official aspirants vying for the governorship ticket, with others still secretly lobbying to plunge into the race.

A chieftain of the party and president, Ekiti Kete Good Citizens’ Association, Hon Ayodeji Babatola,  paid a courtesy visit to the State Working Committee, led by the State Chairman, Chief Olajide Awe, at its secretariat in Ado Ekiti  on Monday.

Babatola while addressing the leaders of the party, represented by its State Secretary, Hon. Paul Omotoso, advised that should the party fails to get a consensus candidate that it should conduct  a free, fair and credible primary for the party to be strong enough to defeat Governor Ayodele Fayose.

He said the group has visited the state prison and Erelu Angela Adebayo Babies Home at Iyin Ekiti to donate to inmates as part of the ways to promote and propagate the ideal of good governance the APC was renowned for.

“APC can’t afford to lose Ekiti, because that can affect President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection bid. The PDP will have their candidate from the North and that will deplete the APC’s votes, but once the southwest is strong to be able to deliver, of which Ekiti is part of, the job will be easier .

“We are ready to partner with the SWC to promote and  sell  our candidate and to manage the post primary crisis in our dear party provided the right things are done”, he said.

Speaking earlier, the group’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Fatai Adeyemo and a chieftain of the body, Hon Femi Amogbonjaye, described APC as the only hope for Ekiti, saying Fayose has bastardised governance and reduced Ekiti people to mere street beggars in the name of stomach infrastructure.

  • ‘Why progressives should win Ekiti’

    ‘Why progressives should win Ekiti’

Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Debo Ajayi spoke with some reporters in Lagos on the party’s primary and why progressives should win the election. MUSA ODOSHIMOKHE was there.

Why are you in the race for Ekiti governor?

Many people acknowledged the intellectuality of Ekiti State, but there is no evidence of proportionate development to match the level of intellect. I came to realize that one unique asset that Ekiti has which no government in the past had taken advantage of, is the intellectual gift of the people. We know that knowledge rules the world and if Ekiti has that knowledge why don’t we convert it to wealth creation. Why don’t we convert it to providing good governance? Having been out there, working in foreign lands, I saw development first hand. I saw what could happen when nations have visionary leaders. We have seen what good leadership had done for Lagos State, what vision had done for Lagos and we will like to see that happens in Ekiti State. One of my key inspirations is that the fate of Ekiti, being derided and deprived would have to change. Any measure of development in Ekiti will inspired the rest of Nigeria. People have come to expect too much from Ekiti which energizes me. We can transform Ekiti and show the rest of Nigeria what is possible. All the intellectual assets of Ekiti that are abound world over could be tapped into. We can rally them, provide the enabling environment for them to prosper and show the rest of Nigeria what is possible.

So, I am interested in the position of the governor because I see the potential of using Ekiti to showcase to the rest of Nigeria good leadership. This is possible because I have the development background that prepares me to provide good leadership for Ekiti State.

This is not the first time Nigeria would have intellectuals in position of leadership, yet nothing substantial was achieved…

Let me emphasise that policies in every area of human endeavour and even in the corporate world need intellectualism and political skills. When you are dealing with people, you really need to have the political skills. The problem really is not about intellectualism versus political factualism. The problem in Nigeria is that the process of producing leadership is very faulty. That is really where the problem lies. The issue of assessing potential leaders on the basis of tract records, credibility is not there, rather the emphasis is money. For instance if people want to talk about Debo Ajayi running for governor, the first question people will ask is does he have the money? And that breaks my heart because that tells me that people don’t even care about the vision, plans and programme. They don’t want to know how you care about the people, but about money. I know there is need for money in politics because running advertorial, publicity and providing logistic for supporters, cost money. The end result is that the leaders we produce are leaders that perpetuate the terrible system. So, we have bad leadership producing bad followership and bad followership sustaining bad leadership. The circle goes on, but to break it, that is where you need technocrats in politics combining intellectualism and political sagacity. And that is part of what I represent, I am among people that know what they are doing, people that are propelled by their own empathy for the people. That is when we will have the real democracy. So, if you go to Ekiti today, the clamour is that they need someone fresh. They are saying they need someone with clean records, not somebody who had gathered the political experience from the past that comes under scrutiny.

The present governor rode to power on the promise of stomach infrastructure, is the APC towing the same line?

I want to say that stomach infrastructure actually started under the government that I served as commissioner. When people started to think beyond physical infrastructure and trying to deal with their own vulnerability, we recognize that there is need for stomach infrastructure. And if you really understand stomach infrastructure, it is nothing more than care for the immediate need of people. In other words, when you are talking about development, you have to realize that there is a transition between now and that future that you envisage. Every responsible government needs to care for the people; it is when you politicise stomach infrastructure, that you become a manipulator of the people. For example, if you go to Ekiti today, you ask them, was the expectation of stomach infrastructure actually met under Fayose? The answer you get is a resounding no. Governor Fayose popularizing the concept was to win votes but, in the actual situation, the hopes of the people were dashed. When you have financially vulnerable people the concept become so important to them, I am looking forward to providing a government that care for the people now and at the same time plan for their future. So, sustainable development is going to be very important.

The APC has many governorship aspirants . Is this not worrisome?

We don’t have an abnormal list of APC aspirants yet in Ekiti. So, it is not really a major concern. The list is long because it indicates that the trend is in favour of the APC. So naturally, that would attract quality aspirants to contest on the platform of the party. This of course is good for democracy. I am not particularly concerned about that, but what is really important is the process that would generate who emerges APC flag bearer. The process has to be free and fair. It has to be a credible process, so that the chances of APC will not be in endanger by having the wrong candidate. As long as the APC has the right person, that will be good for Ekiti because right now people are so disenchanted with the present administration. They are looking for credible alternative and are hoping that the right governor will come in 2018. That will set Ekiti on the course of leading the rest of the nation in terms of development. I am very positive that if things are properly done, APC will have a good chance, but God forbid if APC loses this chance, that could be the end of the progressives in Ekiti. The next governor will probably want to do everything possible to run for eight years. We are having the current one almost running for four years. That will be 12 years APC will be out of government. This is very critical to the APC, but I am absolutely confidence that will force us to get it right.

Ekiti people probably do not want to support a government that looks too elitist. How will you fit in?

With the level of connectivity that we have with the people and having served under Dr. Kayode Fayemi led administration, I have learnt about what is good about the administration. Therefore, we must make sure we don’t lose. I have equally kept a tab on what we need to amend and what is wrong about that administration that we have to put everything to avoid. I happened to have that privileged, so in terms of elitist which I believe is perception and how we carry people along. There is a school of thought that says if you call a round table in Ekiti of any programme to make the state better, that programme will never get done because of the intellectual debate that it will generate. That school of thought says if you know what is good, go ahead and do it, hoping that at the end of the day people will see what you have done and appreciate you for it.

You may also get it done and people still don’t appreciate. I saw firsthand how hard you can work and people still don’t appreciate. I feel compelled to carry people along in whatever that I am going to be doing. So, if elitist, that is not going to be my style of government and I going to be involved with my people. I do that right now because I know the local joints the people meet and I assembled. There is no leader that can be effective if you are a stranger to your people.

Fayose has anointed his deputy for Ekiti governorship position, has this not push the APC to a tight corner?

Governor Fayose anointing his deputy is within his right. The problem is that sentiment is against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti because Fayose has not delivered on the expectation of the people. There is the overwhelming belief that anointing his deputy is a continuity of Fayose in power. This is what the people are going to dwell on in the coming election. He is entitled to do whatever he wants to do, the people are equally entitled to elect whoever they want to elect. So, what he did is not of serious concern to us.  What I have working for me, is that I am the only governorship aspirant that had prior working experience in Ekiti. I am very familiar with legacy of issues that we need to continue and familiar with the people and putting some innovative projects in place. So, as long as the APC gets it primary right, the PDP will never be a threat because it is a spent force in the state.

•Fayose, Ahmed set up peace panel

Eight persons have been wounded in a bloody boundary clash between Obbo Ayegunle in Kwara State and Eda Oniyo in Ekiti State.

Youths from both communities used weapons against one another while several property were reportedly destroyed in the mayhem.

Governments of both states have resolved to set up a joint committee for a lasting peace between the two neighbouring communities.

Eda Oniyo is located in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, while Obbo Ayegunle community is in Ekiti Local Government area of Kwara State.

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, who addressed reporters yesterday after a peace meeting with leaders of the two communities at the Government House in Ado-Ekiti, warned traditional rulers to call their subjects to order.

He warned that the full weight of the law would be brought upon anyone caught unleashing terror in the name of a boundary clash.

To demonstrate his seriousness about lasting peace in both communities, Fayose made the two monarchs of the feuding communities to swear by the Holy Bible that they would not sponsor violence or any act that could lead to a breakdown of law and order.

The governor warned that he and his Kwara State counterpart, Abdulfatah Ahmed, would not hesitate to suspend any traditional ruler whose subjects foment trouble in the two communities.

He said the six-man peace panel would submit its reports in two weeks, but warned youths on both sides of the boundary to stay away from the disputed land.

Fayose said: “We are not interested in bloodshed. Some people don’t know the meaning of peace. Because violence pays, that is why they are doing it. There are financiers for every act of violence.

“I blame this crisis on leadership failure. The two sides know the sponsors who left these people in this condition because of some worthless land. If you cannot guarantee peace in your domain, we will suspend you as Kabiyesi (monarch). This should be the last warning to both of you.

“I appeal to the traditional rulers and the local government chairmen in both communities to allow peace to reign. Any young man who causes violence will go for it.”

Those present at the peace parley included the representative of Kwara State governor and his deputy, Chief of Staff, Mr Leke Ogungbe, the Chairman of Ekiti Local Government of Kwara State and Ilejemeje Local Government of Ekiti State as well as security chiefs from the two states.

He noted that Bamidele has acquired experience in governance for twelve years in Lagos State from Special Adviser to Commissioner before representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II in the Lower Chamber for four years.

Describing Bamidele as a “man of the people who have the interest of the masses at heart,” Ige disclosed that the ex-federal lawmaker attracted 88 projects to his constituency 49 of which were completed before leaving office.

Ige stressed that Bamidele remains the only aspirant that has cognate experience spanning the three arms of government as a lawyer in the temple of justice, a lawmaker in the legislature and a commissioner in the executive.

Rainstorm destroys over 200 homes in Ekiti

Rainstorm has destroyed over 200 houses in Ekiti State in the first two months of the year.

The General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Jide Borode, broke the news in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The agency chief said the disaster affected about four local government areas.

Expressing shock at the devastation the rainstorms caused and what he called the monumental loss the residents suffered, Borode noted that there was need to be grateful to God as there was no report of death.

He listed the affected communities as Ado metropolis, Emure, Ise and Erinjiyan in Ekit West Local Government Area, where he said the damage ran into hundreds of millions of naira.

Borode urged the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the victims of the rainstorms.

The agency chief said the effect of the damage was too massive to be left for the state government alone to handle.

He added that the victims needed succour that would enable them to recover as quickly as possible.

Borode also warned the residents to avoid building houses in flood-prone areas, saying the best period to acquire land was during the rainy season when flood-prone areas could be easily identified.

The SEMA chief also cautioned against acts that could hinder free flow of water in the canals.

He urged the residents to plant trees to protect houses from storms and erosion.

    •Commission to prevent underage voting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ekiti State has expressed concern that over 215,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have not been collected, less than five months to the governorship election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. AbdulGaniy Raji, broke the news yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, while addressing reporters in his office on preparations for the governorship poll.

Raji, who spoke through INEC Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Ekiti State, Mr. Taiwo Gbadegesin, expressed worry over apathy among voters to the collection of the PVCs, despite the enlightenment being carried out by the agency.

The REC said the state government had been partnering traditional rulers, religious organisations, political parties and the media to increase awareness among the electorate.

He said: “We have done a lot of jingles and we have been working with our outfits in the 16 local government areas for voter education. But despite these efforts, our people seem to be showing apathy.

“As we speak, we have about 215,000 PVCs with us which are yet to be claimed.

“We are hopeful that all these will be collected before the election because our aim is to ensure that we have a high turnout during the election, like we witnessed in July 21, 2014.”

20 jailed in Ekiti for sanitation offences

Twenty residents of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, were sentenced at the weekend for failing to participate in the monthly environmental sanitation.

The offenders were arrested by the state’s environmental sanitation officers for indiscriminate dumping of refuse and disregard for official restriction of movement during the sanitation period.

The Magistrate of a mobile court, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, who sentenced the convicts to prison terms – ranging from one to two months – gave them options of fine between N3,000 and N500 in lieu of the prison sentences.

Mrs Afeniforo noted that the sentences would not only serve as punishment but also as a deterrence to people that may be tempted to commit similar offences.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Environment, Chief Bisi Kolawole, warned the residents that government would continue to prosecute anybody caught flouting environmental and sanitation laws.

Stressing the need for residents to take care of their environment to prevent flooding and outbreak of epidemic, Kolawole noted that because of the devastating effect of flooding, the people should not allow anybody to indiscriminately dump refuse in the waterways or do anything that would block canals.

The commissioner called for continued support for the government to make life more meaningful for the residents.

He urged them to make judicious use of the waste bins the government provided at designated areas to enable the government achieve a healthy environment.

  • Ekiti radio, TV get knocks for campaign funds’ source

A political pressure group, John Kayode Fayemi (JKF) Movement, has accused the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) of spreading falsehood to malign the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The group faulted a news item the BSES radio and television channels and social media carried in which it accused the minister of boasting that he (Fayemi) had N8 billion to spend in the election.

The Federal Government was also accused in the broadcast to have earmarked N20 billion on the July 14 poll.

In a statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, by its Director of Publicity, Mr. Kunle Omotayo, the JKF Movement accused those they called agents of Governor Ayo Fayose of being behind the news.

The group maintained that the story was “untrue, false and unfounded”.

It said Fayemi never made such a statement, adding that the news was fabricated by Fayose’s “media spin doctors”.

The JKF Movement described the allegation as a reckless abuse and an assault on the intelligence of Nigerians and Ekiti people.

The group said the people were aware that “an urbane and reticent Fayemi will never make that reckless statement privately to close friends, let alone to the public”.
