Apc chieftain urges Ekiti voters to reject PDP at governorship poll

The Deputy Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Mr. Tajudeen Akingbolu, has urged the people to reject the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the July 14 governorship election.

Akingbolu, in a chat with The Nation in Ado-Ekiti, urged Ekitis at home and abroad to participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise to participate in the poll.

He urged them to use their votes to end what he called “the cycle of hunger, suffering and hardship” allegedly unleashed by the PDP government led by Governor Ayo Fayose.

Akingbolu said Ekiti people enjoyed better standard of living under the APC government of Dr Kayode Fayemi, wondering why Fayose has failed to utilise funds collected from the Federal Government to offset workers’ entitlements.

The lawyer said APC-led governments in other parts of Nigeria are investing in other sectors of the economy to better the lots of their people unlike what obtains in Ekiti.

Akingolu said: “It is unfortunate that despite what APC led government did in Ekiti up till 2014, the PDP through the federal might came on board and disorganized everything and ensured that APC left government.

“Since PDP came to power, there has been no development in Ekiti State. Salaries are not being paid, civil servants are hungry despite all the financial interventions from the Federal Government like bailout, Paris Club refunds and Budget Support Fund.

He added: “It is unfortunate that despite these financial lifelines, Governor Ayo Fayose has borrowed up to N56 billion within three years that he got to power. This is unacceptable and it is an abomination.

“Unfortunately, our people are at the receiving end of the maladministration of Governor Fayose and that is why we are calling on entire Ekiti indigenes to come home particularly those in Diaspora and ensure that there is good governance in Ekiti.

“This can only happen through the enthronement of APC in the July 14 governorship election. What we are witnessing in Ekiti shows that we need a rescue mission, we need a rescue mission.

  • Ekiti poll: No going back on zoning, says Fayose

Ekiti poll: No going back on zoning, says Fayose

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has said his desire to instal a successor from Ikere-Ekiti made him to endorse his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

Speaking during a rally in Ado-Ekiti to herald the declaration by Olusola to run for governors on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose told other Ekiti communities to forget producing the governor.

He said at the rally held at Ojumose area of the town that other communities, including Ado-Ekiti, would be compensated with lesser offices.

Fayose who sang in Yoruba said: “Mi o mo gomina Ise, mi o mo gomina Ifaki, mi o mo gomina Omuo, mi o mo gomina Ilawe, mi o mo gomina Ado, mi o mo gomina Isan, gomina ti mo mo, Ikere lo ti wa.”

When translated to English, the song goes thus: “I don’t know any governor from Ise, I don’t know any governor from Ifaki, I don’t know any governor from Omuo, I don’t know any governor from Ilawe, I don’t know any governor from Ado, I don’t know any governor from Isan, my governor is coming from Ikere.”

The governor was apparently referring to Olusola’s rivals at the primary.

Former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and former state Attorney General, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi are from Ise. Senate Minority Whip, Mrs. Biodun Olujimi is from Omuo. Former High Commissioner to Canada, Chief Dare Bejide is from Ilawe.

From the opposition side, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi is from Isan. The APC Deputy National Chairman (South). Chief Segun Oni is from Ifaki while Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, is from Ado.

Fayose advised Adeyeye to join the APC, if he is not happy with the adoption of Olusola as his preferred successor.

Adeyeye who has declared intent to contest and three other aspirants have kicked against Olusola’s adoption.

Fayose said: “The PDP has taken a position. I say we have taken a position and we  have no apologies  for that  and the position was that Olusola should take over after me as the governor of Ekiti.

“It doesn’t matter to us how many people that are abusing us by our action. They are even free to join our adversaries, but we will defeat them as the God liveth.

“This is just a baby declaration, the date of the declaration will be announced later. By the grace of God, Olusola will be governor of Ekiti.

The Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM) has condemned the alleged forceful coercion of civil servants, students, party delegates and other political appointees to attend the ‘Olusola for Governor Rally.’

In a statement, the PAAM Director of Publicity, Chief Niyi Ojo, said the alleged threat issued to these categories of people to attend the rally as a violation of their fundamental human rights.

The organisation urged party members to disregard any threat of suspension from their positions.

  • Senate alarmed over spread of Lassa fever to 14 states

Senate alarmed over spread of Lassa fever to 14 states

The Senate Thursday expressed concern over the spread of Lassa fever to fourteen states of the federation.

It listed the affected states to include Edo, Ondo, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Imo, Kogi, Bauchi, Anambra, Benue, Federal capital Territory, Abia, Ekiti and Delta.

It also said that the outbreak of the disease which was first recorded on the 5th of January, 2018, has risen to 363 as against the lesser number of cases recorded in previous years.

It said that out of the 363 cases, 81 persons have tested positive, while 44 persons have been admitted at the Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control, Irrua Teaching Hospital, Edo State.

About 11 deaths have been recorded, of which 3 are health workers, it said.

Senator representing Edo Central, Clifford Ordia, drew attention of his colleague to ravaging spread of disease in a motion entitled “Urgent need to support the Centre for Research, Control and Treatment of Lassa Fever disease in Nigeria.”

The upper chamber mandated its joint committee on Health and Primary Health Care and Communicable Diseases, to investigate steps taken by the Ministry of Health to curb the spread of the disease.

It asked the Federal Government through the Ministry of Health to urgently provide the Center all necessary equipment to enable it meet its responsibilities to Nigerians seeking medical care at the center.

It also resolved to urge the Ministry of Information and National Orientation to engage in sensitisation and education of the public on the prevention, control and treatment of Lassa fever.

The upper chamber urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to quickly visit the center in Irrua Specialist Hospital for on the spot assessment, with a view to providing relief material to the victims.

Ordia who quoting the World Health Organization said that fever is an acute viral heamorrhagic illness of two to 21 days duration that occurs in West Africa and is transmitted to human through contact with or exposure to food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces.

He said person to person infection and laboratory transmission can also occur particularly in hospitals lacking adequate infection prevention and control equipment.

Ordia said: “The institute is the only centre in Nigeria known for excellence in the management, control and treatment of Lassa fever in Nigeria. The centre received samples from all states referred above for the purpose of examination and treatment.

“The centre also engages in the training of Health care workers, i.e. Doctors, Nurses and Laboratory Technologists on the management of Lassa fever in Nigeria. Last year alone, the centre trained 67 health workers from 15 states with reported cases of the outbreak.

“The centre is presently overwhelmed by the number of samples received, including patients on admission which has stretched the bed space, beddings, Dialysis Machine,  X-Ray equipment, Ultra Sound Scan, ECG Machine, Ventilators monitors, human and financial resources beyond limit.”

“The centre is confronted with the challenges of Inadequate protective instruments for the health workers engaged in the management of  victims; inadequate drugs, i.e Ribarvirin for patient treatment; inadequate disinfectants and other infection prevention and control consumables; and lack of operational vehicles, public address system and health education materials for contact tracing and community sensitization.”

The Edo Central lawmaker said that the Senate should resolve to make more funds available for the centre in the 2018 budget.

It also urged the Federal Government to set up centres in different parts of the country.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided, said health care should be one of the major responsibilities of government.

Ekweremadu noted that “If this matter is not addressed, we will be fail in our responsibilities. And to know that this issue has been going on for years is worrisome.

“We need to give this issue the attention it needs. We have enough medical doctors. We need to provide the needed equipment they need to work with. I believe that the committee will help us address the issue. We cannot allow this to continue to spread.”

  • Ekiti to upgrade staff development centre to institute

Ekiti to upgrade staff development centre to institute

The Ekiti State government is set to upgrade the in-house Staff Development Centre to a full-fledged institute for public servants.

The Head of Service (HOS), Dr. Olugbenga Faseluka, broke the news yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, during the second convocation ceremony of the centre.

The HOS said Governor Ayodele Fayose had approved the advancement of officers in the secretarial cadre from their previous cadre bar to a more advanced level.

The gesture, according to Faseluka, is a display of the commitment of the current administration to making public service more proficient while prioritising the welfare of workers.

Faseluka said the development centre, which caters for the training of the secretary cadre only, would be upgraded to become a vibrant citadel of learning that can handle the training of all cadres in public service.

Emphasising that the government was aware that training was key to a better, more professional public service, Faseluka said Fayose relocated the centre to its present site with state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment during his first term in office.

He said: “There is no gainsaying the fact that the centre has contributed tremendously to the manpower needs in the secretarial cadres of public service and private/corporate sector of Ekiti State and sister-states.

“I congratulate the workers and students for maintaining the quality and standard the centre is known for.”

The Permanent Secretary in the Office of Establishments and Training, Mr. Olusesan Alabi, noted that the centre was established to build human capacity and ensure career progression of workers in the service of Ekiti State government.

He stressed the importance of exposing the public service to regular training to achieve effective service delivery.

The centre’s principal, Mrs. Mercy Ipinmoroti, acknowledged the support of the DAWN Commission and the Department for International Development (DFID) for the proposed upgrade of the centre.

He said the establishment was known for its consistent pursuit of excellence, adding that it performed well in the last national secretariat examination with an overall aggregate of 97 per cent.

Ekiti APC laments imminent collapse of Water Company

…Says Fayose attitude driving investors away

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Ekiti State has expressed concern over the alleged refusal of Governor Ayo Fayose to sustain the state investment in Warm Springs Water Limited.

The party rued the imminent collapse of the company which was floated by the Adeniyi Adebayo administration in partnership with United African Company (UAC) Limited. The company produces the popular Gossy Water.

APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement on Thursday lamented that the policies of the Fayose administration has been driving investors away from the state.

Olatunbosun said the imminent collapse of the company was an evidence Fayose’s neglect of government enterprises that have potentials to generate jobs for Ekiti people.

It was learnt that the board of Warm Spring Waters Limited had given liquidation notice to stakeholders, citing failure of the company to pay its debts and other challenges.

Olatunbosun cited the closure of GTB, Ecobank and Coca Cola over their alleged refusal to surrender their corporate social responsibility cash to Fayose as reasons why they were forced out of the state.

Olatunbosun said the latest on the list of the shut down businesses would be Gossy Water to be liquidated at the extra ordinary general meeting of the company on February 6th, 2018.

“One major reason for the winding up of the company is the unfavourable business environment such that there was no electricity supply to the company to run effectively for three years, including the non-patronage of the company’s product by Fayose’s administration because the company was the initiative of his predecessor.

Massive security in Ekiti as ex-minister joins governorship race

There was a heavy security presence yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, as a former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, declared intent to vie for the governorship seat.

Adeyeye, who intends to run on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), condemned alleged attempts by the state government to stop the declaration.

He accused Governor Ayo Fayose’s administration of ordering some television stations not to cover the event.

Adeyeye’s campaign office at Coca-Cola area of Ikere Road and the open field on the opposite side, where the declaration was held, were cordoned off with heavy security presence.

A police armoured personnel carrier, two vehicles belonging to security agencies and battle-ready armed policemen were on the ground to avert likely breakdown of law and order.

There was a massive lockdown on the busy Ado-Ikere roas as Adeyeye’s supporters resorted to trekking to the declaration venue.

The former PDP national spokesman said he was joining the governorship race to give good governance to Ekiti residents and make life better for them.

Adeyeye, who was joined by his wife, Adetomilola, accused the Fayose administration of inflicting hardship on the people.

He promised not owe civil servants, teachers, local government workers and pensioners, as being witnessed in the state.

The governorship hopeful promised to repair Ekiti, which he said had been damaged by bad governance.

Adeyeye said he would invest in agriculture, create jobs and give economic empowerment to the people.

He urged Ekiti residents, who are yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so to enable the exercise their franchise on Election Day.

  • ‘APC should conduct transparent primary in Ekiti’

‘APC should conduct transparent primary in Ekiti’

Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Hon. Bimbo Daramola, in this interview with Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU and MUSSA ODOSHIMOKHE, explains the issues that will shape the primaries and the election.

What is your assessment of the political situation in Ekiti State?

I reckon that people are beginning to react and respond to the political situation as it unfolds. Again, as we get closer to the primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State and given that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had already taken a position in respect of the anointed candidate of Governor Fayose. As we move closer, people in the two leading parties in the state will begin to get agitated on the process of the coming election. There will be anxious moments. A number of activities have been taking place in the parties because election is getting nearer. You will discover that the likes of Hon. Adeyeye, Mrs Olujimi, Barrister Owolabi will be raising issues about the appointment of a successor for Governor Fayose. On our own side, many people are still asking questions about how many people are really running in the APC.  There are candidates all over the place. People are beginning to come to term with the fact that elections are coming.

Don’t you think the PDP may be ahead of your party as the election draws nearer?

Being ahead will just be the fact that they are the ruling party and they have the nominee of the governor. To that extent, there seem to be a direction they want to go as regards who the governor wants to field for that position. I am also sure things will begin to narrow down to the extent that we will get to know the aspirants who are really serious about the election.

If Ekiti, especially the elite, have said they did want Fayose and now he is giving them a professor in a state where we have highly educated people, don’t you think that the PDP may  have an edge?

That in itself will be a contradiction, a contradiction in the sense that this is a government that rode on the credo of stomach infrastructure. Now, all of a sudden it is putting forward a man who has a Ph.D. That means the man is contracting himself. It must have been a later day reality for this government to appreciate the importance of fielding a candidate because of his academic credentials. It does not appear as if he has gone through a process of self re-examination. This was the man who told the people that he was the friend of the masses and had identified with them. I don’t think he would pick Prof. Olusola on the basis of academic standing. He had talked about continuity over and over. So, if he is going to sell the Deputy Governor if he is going to sell the candidate on the basis of his academic standing, there will be a serious challenge. A man who said he is the friend of the masses and had risen on the crest and credo of stomach infrastructure, so what would he preach to the people that will not make the people confused. So, if Olusola campaign veered off the continuity slogan, the campaign will die right from day one. The moment Olusola picks another educated person who begins to preach mental infrastructure against stomach infrastructure, there will be contradiction. The people will be confused and for them, I think they are smart to have said that a Ph.D does not count. He had just gone through the school of stomach infrastructure and appeared to have graduated from the stomach infrastructure. So, it is better to keep it as it is. I don’t think that in the course of the campaign anybody will refer to the PhD credential of Olusola.

If the PDP candidate finally comes from Ikere Ikiti, and his running mate comes from Ado-Ekiti,  do you see the APC beating the PDP at the election?

It is very simply. Tell me one election that Ekiti had actually voted along geographical sentiments. It has never happened. I do not expect that people should begin to instigate voting along ethnic lines. There is no election that had been won on the basis of that sentiment. Otunba Niyi Adebayo did not become the governor on the basis of coming from the Central neither was Ayo Fayose. If they had talked of zoning at that time, it may have been an issue and Fayose would not have come in back to back with somebody who just came from the same central axis. And then, from Fayose it went to Segun Oni. Oni did not win election on the basis of coming from the North, Ekiti did not vote for him on the basis of the fact that he came from the north. How can that appeal to anybody now? When I hear these things about the sentiments of zoning and geographical expression, I begin to wonder. Whoever is elected would need more credentials than his place of extraction. Place of extraction would be the least credentials that you will parade to assume the government that will take us out of the mess that we are in today. You must connect with the reality of the fact that for the past months, people have not been paid. How does your place of extraction pay salaries? How your place of extraction does resolve the badly damaged infrastructure? How does it address the quality of education, healthcare, make pensioners happy? How does it make civil servants happy? I was born and live in that place, so I understand what it takes to address these issues. I know we must take a contextual analysis of where we want to be in that place. If we make the mistake of not having a proper re-orientation and a proper contextual analysis of the place, who we are and where we are, we would have failed. And our forebears will never forgive us for that.

How united is your party in Ekitiland?

I believe that the party is strong, united and the leaders is doing so much to keep us united. But, don’t forget that election will always appeal to sentiments and aspiration is also a sentimental thing. There will be a little bit of contention here and there. I believe that as soon as our candidate emerges, we are going to put ourselves together and work for the success of the party. And more than anything else, we are going to work for Ekiti State.

If you put yourself on the popularity weighing scale, how will you rate yourself?

It will not been fair for me to rate myself but, if you allow me to say just for the purpose of responding to this question, I would say if the encouragement had not been overwhelming, at this level, I would have opted out by now. If I am not extremely encouraged by the kind of responses we are getting from the field, from the elders. Our message recovery and restoration is sinking so well with the people. And don’t forget that at this election, I am running on the basis of reputation. It is not an ego thing for me, I am running on reputation. People are going to begin to ask critical questions like who is this, what have you done before. What are you going to do when given the opportunity? I am sure this is not a lousy boast. Are you going to deny the fact that we built the best hospital of American standard in the state? We have cut down infant and maternal mortality in that area because of that intervention. Are you going to deny the fact that we have given a future to 2000 Ekiti young men and women through our education intervention programme? Out of the graduates Ekiti would produce in no distant time, Bimbo Daramola would have etched in their minds a direction. We are going to liberate more of these people and whatever they become there after, Ekiti gains from it. That means we cut down number of people who would be social deviants. The grand-father of today was a child of yesterday I must emphasised.

What are your expectations about the primary in theAPC?

My expectation would be that the election would be free and fair. I would expect that election would be conducted and we already have standards of conducting primaries in this party. The grand norm of conducting our primaries in the party is the standard used during the President Buhari primary. We have seen the one conducted in Ondo, Anambra and have no misgiving that Ekiti will fall lower than that. The standard for which the party had set for itself would be maintained in the case of Ekiti. We expect 100 per cent transparency. We expect that the list of delegates would be out and would be known. Every aspirant would have access to the list in good time at the same time. And then, we validate because that is where the problem usually is. The list should also be transparent enough because we will meet the delegates. There is standard that we already have in the party which we will keep. That is what made our election highly commendable. One of the things that the APC celebrates today is the fact that we have transparent primaries. How come Andy Ubah did not challenge Tony Nwoye? The one in Akure got a little bit contentious but, riding on the back of the mistake of Akure, Anambra came out very clear. So, we expect that Ekiti primary will be a lot cleaner than all the others.

How many aspirants have appealed to you to support them?

There are people who cannot open their mouth to say such a thing. What are you going to lobby me for? It is either you join with us. Again, one or two people have said let us work together. This aspiration is beyond personal ambition and for 14 years I have a trajectory for this party. It will be difficult for anyone to come forward to want to inherit our patrimony.

You were the Director-General of the Dr. Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation in 2014. The former governor has kicked off consultations in Ekiti on his ambition. Has he approached you?

I would rather say that he is my elder brother, my leader. He has not approached me yet and I know the discussion I had with him and so I am still within the purview of that discussion.

What factor will tilt the pendulum of victory to the APC during the election?

That is a most brilliant question. What will shift the pendulum of victory to the APC, is if we get it right before going into the election. We should thank God that He allowed the PDP to come into governance in Ekiti. I must say by now Ekiti people can now use their tongue to count their teeth. The civil servant can now double check, if Fayose pays salary. Everybody can now assess whether there is social security or not. People can now talk about welfare or not. That is a serious challenge and opens a bumpy ride for the PDP in the coming election. For us, a whole lot of people will still want to give us the chance, in view of what President Buhari is doing in the areas of the fight against corruption. I will expect that the integrity level of this party will appeal to the people of Ekiti. If I become a candidate of the party, for instance, we are going to create jobs for our youths. There will be rural development and whole lot of transformation. So, the candidate of our party will be a crucial factor and should be reassuring that the person can take us out of the challenges facing Ekiti people. It is a complex situation therefore we must endeavour to get our primary right. If we get all the dynamics right I believe that it will be a good run for our party.
