Akwa United put up a spirited first half performance to defeat El-Kanemi Warriors of Maidugari 2-0 at the Nest of Champions in a Match Day 23 Nigeria Professional Football League played yesterday.

The Promise Keepers were clinical in front of goal to complement their dominance on the field of play as Aniekan Ekpe ran riot in the middle of the pack in impeccable fashion and doing the double over their visitors this season.

Despite flashes of sparks from the visitors in the opening moments, it was Akwa United’s Fortune Omoniwari who had a real effort at goal as he brought down a floated cross into the box with his chest before hitting it on the volley in the eighth minute. His effort went wide.

Akwa kept the pressure going and it paid off in the ninth minute when El-Kanemi conceded a  penalty as the ball struck Mohammed Alhaji’s hand when he went to block a shot. Ekpe converted the spot kick though George Michael got a hand to it.

The second goal came in the 30th minute as the hosts quickly turned defence to attack. A long clearance fell to Omoniwari who made a dash to the opponents’ half without resistance. He took his time before sending in a delightful cross into the box and an onrushing Michael Ikpe planted it into the far right corner to double their lead.

El-Kanemi’s Bosso eyes top three finish

El-kanemi Warriors Coach, Issa Ladan Bosso declared that his team will be the toast of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) during the second round that starts on Sunday.

“You can see the display and pace of the game, especially the offensives by my team, it’s a game plan that worked perfectly and yielded an instant result,” declared Bosso.

“Rangers have a formidable team that has enjoyed continuity and they could as well win titles. My team has young minds with little experience in the likes of Umar Zango, Isaac Hele Hele and Suleiman Dorri, but the good thing is that the boys adhere to instructions and the zeal to play burns like fire. That is a team that can compete as well,” reasoned the one-time Kano Pillars coach.

“The home fans have been worried about our form on the road which has yielded poor results but we are working on making amends as the second stanza kicks off. There will be new signings before the window closes and we intend to fortify every department,” Bosso said.

“I have always been a confident coach from the outset and nothing is impossible in football. We want to replicate same form displayed in our home games against Warri Wolves on Sunday and hopefully start a new road form in Bauchi against  to Wikki Tourists by midweek. These matches will be approached with all sense of win win mentality,” Bosso vowed.

El Kanemi hit Lagos with Azma Flight today

SportingLife can report that players and officials of El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri will arrive in Lagos today (Friday) aboard Azma Airline ahead of Sunday’s match day six of the Nigeria Professional Football League encounter with Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM).

It was gathered that the state government, which was impressed with the team’s 2-0 win over Enyimba FC in the match day five tie on Sunday, requested that the team should travel by air to enhance their chances of getting another good result against MFM at the Agege Stadium on Sunday.

The club’s technical adviser, Ladan Bosso, who disclosed this to SportingLife, said the team will travel from Maiduguri to Lagos by noon today.

Bosso said the government’s gesture will be a morale booster to the team as he promised that he and his boys will reciprocate the confidence repose in them by the government.

He said Bornu Army will maintain the standard while he advised other clubs to emulate Bornu State Government by making the players more comfortable.

“The trip is From Maiduguri to Abuja and from Abuja to Lagos on Friday. This is a sign of good commitment from the government and we are ready to show the government that we really appreciate their efforts on us. This is a good step from our government and we want other clubs to follow suit. It is all about players’ comfort and we are travelling to set standard,” Bosso told SportingLife.

  • El Kanemi write LMC to return to Maiduguri

El Kanemi write LMC to return to Maiduguri

The management of El Kanemi Warriors FC of Maiduguri has re-appealed to League Management Company (LMC) to reconsider its decision to suspend their home matches in Maiduguri by returning the team to his base in Bornu.

The Bornu Army has been playing its home matches at the Karkanda Stadium, Katsina for two years  due to the security situation in Maiduguri.

In a letter signed by the team’s secretary, Tahiru Bala, the club said Maiduguri is now safe to host matches, claiming that the money spent to prosecute matches in Katsina is taking a toll on the team.

The statement read in part: “I am directed to once again write and appeal to your esteem office to reconsider your decision to suspend our home matches in Maiduguri by returning us to our base in Bornu State capital.

“Two years have passed  and we endured playing away from Maiduguri with lots of difficulties. While we appreciate your interest in safeguarding our collective security interest by your action, we want to draw your attention to the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the war against the insurgents whose activities were the reasons behind our suspension.

“Today Grade A matches are played in Maiduguri, with an example of full capacity stadium in our friendly match against Wikki Tourists of Bauchi last year, and the recent Shehu of Borno  Cup final this year which saw a tumultuous crowd of spectators with the Shehu of Bornu in attendance. All these are testimonies to the peace enjoyed in Maiduguri, the state capital.”

It added: “I want to also inform you that our team, El Kanemi Warriors is running the league on a very expensive position because of the away from home factor, for instance we left Makurdi last Thursday to Katsina instead of going to Maiduguri for our home match. And in Katsina, we spent four nights for our match  against Enyimba which cost us N1,000,000 for accommodation and N320,000 for feeding minus officials’ accommodation and allowance and match expenses.”

The letter read further: “It is sad to also inform you that even the Katsina State Stadium management, Karkanda has opted to increase their stadium charges on us  by N100,000 per match and failure to meet up their pay will close the gates of the stadium because of pressure from the revenue task force and consultant of the state.

“It is due to the above factors coupled with the peace that has returned to Maiduguri that we are saying we can no longer stand the unfair punishments from your side and our host thus forcing us to say we are opting to withdraw from the league if Maiduguri will not host our next home match which is after the MFM encounter in Lagos. By this position I am directed to convey to you our position which is, we are only playing our match against Ifeanyi Ubah in Maiduguri not Katsina.”

EL-KANEMI LOSING STREAK:No cause for alarm, Bosso insists

El Kanemi Warriors Technical Adviser, Ladan Bosso is confident that his team will soon bounce back despite losing its opening two league matches.

The Borno Army lost 1-0 to Wikki Tourists in the matchday one in Katsina on Sunday and suffered another 2-1 defeat to Abia Warriors in Umuahia on Wednesday.

The former Flying Eagles told SportingLife that it is too early for the clubs at the top of the summit to celebrate as he insisted that his boys would soon turn things around for the good of the team.

“When I checked the table I can see that we are last in the log, no shaking about that because I am very confident that we would bounce back despites losing two matches. It is too early for clubs in front to celebrate,” Bosso said to SportingLife.

“I am too confident in my ability and caliber of players I am parading in the ongoing league. It is not too far to remember what happened last season, when FC Taraba were leading the log at beginning in the first six games and ended up relegated to the lower division.

“I know that we are battling blending of players for them to understand themselves in the entire departments. Very soon the link between the defence and the midfield to the attack will be very invincible.

“Our first good test was against Wikki Tourists, during pre-season we were not opportune to play any premier league clubs nor were we involved in pre-season tournament before the start of the league. My confident came at the wake of our game against Abia warriors and we played far better than what we played against Wikki Tourists at home. Abia Warriors were just lucky to get three points in that match. It was 50/50 situation.”

El-Kanemi finished the game with 10 men following the expulsion of their defender, Aghoha Otakho after receiving a second yellow card in the 35th minute.

The former Kano Pillars managers said Otakho’s red card distabilised their initial plans.

“The red card given to Otakho distabilised our option one game’s plan. The card was genuinely given to him. The officiating was fair and I have no quarrel against officiating. And I am taking responsibility for what is happening now. I am assuring our fans within and outside that El-Kanemi will soon bounce back. Moreso, that we are getting the attention of the sponsors; government and management. I have believed that our fans are behind us. I congratulate Abia Warriors for luckily clinching the three points in the game.”
