Ifeanyi Ubah pip 10-man El Kanemi

Ifeanyi Ubah defeated 10-man El Kanemi Warriors 2-1 on Wednesday in a rescheduled Week 33 game of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

IfeanyiUbah had initially walked over El Kanemi, but this was later reverted by the league body. IfeanyiUbah now have 50 points from 36 games, while El Kanemi have 46 points from 36 games.

Chukwude Stephen opened the scoring for the hosts from the spot kick in the 19th minute after he was brought down.

CHAN Eagles midfielder Ifeanyi Matthew levelled the score for El Kanemi with a superb 25-yard free kick which beat IfeanyiUbah goalkeeper. But with eight minutes to play, Afeez Yusuf sealed the victory for the hosts when he riffled in a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.

In the 56th minute, El Kanemi’s Ibrahim Mustapha was sent off for hitting an opponent. In the 62nd minute, El Kanemi goalkeeper George Michael was called to duty and tipped away a goal bound-effort, before he denied Afeez Yusuf a goal with a brilliant save in the 75th minute.

Meanwhile, the rescheduled match involving Taraba and Nasarawa game ended goalless in Abuja as the remaining nine minutes were played after the original fixture was disrupted.

    El-Kanemi players boycott NPFL match

Supersport.com can report that players of El-Kanemi Warriors  decided to stay away from their NPFL clash at FC Ifeanyiubah on Sunday.

Chairman of the club, Zanna Mohammed, confirmed that the players refused to travel for the game in protest over unpaid wages.

“It is true that we did not make the trip (for the game against FC Ifeanyiubah),” began a disappointed Mohammed. “The players are insisting that they will not make the trip unless they are paid despite our pleas to them.”

Players of the club refused to talk to supersport.com unless they are guaranteed to be quoted anonymously.

One of the players, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, claimed that they are owed eight months salaries, seven match bonuses as well as 145 per cent signing-on fees including 45 per cent from last season.

Mohammed, however, shed more light on the unpaid wages: “What has happened is that we have paid them the old salary scale and not the enhanced salaries this season. For instance a player who is supposed to earn N200,000 has been getting N60,000 and we have made their outstanding money in calculation available to the (Borno) State government which has promised to offset every debt soon, in fact before the deadline (given by the League Management Company).”

The Framework and Rules of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the current season states that: “The minimum monthly wage for any player shall not be less than N150,000 or as the (club) board may decide from time to time.”

Mohammed agrees that the club have flouted that which has led to the LMC slamming El-Kanemi with a suspended suspension of six points deduction should they fail to pay their players on or before October 27 following a 60-day notice issued to the Maiduguri outfit.

El-Kanemi failed to show up for the pre-match meeting against FC Ifeanyiubah and now risk being walked over thereby losing three points and three goals. They could as well face a hefty fine of N10 million for failing to honour their match.

The club chairman said they have reported the players to the LMC for refusing to honour the game despite a summary jurisdiction the league body directed the club to pay the players by October 27 or face a six-point deduction.

Mohammed claimed that the players did not serve them any form of notice of going on strike which has seen them stay away from training sessions as well.

“They did not give us any notice despite what has happened,” said Mohammed to supersport.com.

The NPFL rules states in that light that “any official or player of a club who intends to declare a trade dispute with a club over unfulfilled contract agreement or conditions of service shall in the first instance give 45 days notice to the club management stating grounds of dispute.”

El-Kanemi currently sit in 13th position with 43 points in the NPFL standings as the season enters its run-in.

  • Taraba were unlucky against El Kanemi-Huan

Taraba were unlucky against El Kanemi-Huan

John Huan Aondongu has mused that FC Taraba were downbeat to concede an equaliser to Elkanemi Warriors, even as he concedes the team were made to work.

Sunday evening saw the hosts surrender their slender lead having dominated possession for larger spells in the tension-soaked encounter.

“Elkanemi were very strong with the ball, they were very comfortable in the closing stages,” Huan has conceded to News24 this week.

“They also had to come back into the game after our goal at the start and they demanded a lot. We worked a lot, created much danger but we were somehow unlucky not to have killed the game earlier.

“No doubt they moved the ball much from one wing to the other. That required much of us in the middle.

“We were comfortable and created chances. We worked hard, and we are sad about the goal that we did concede.

“I’m still yet to believe that we drew the match but there are lots of positives to take for the future.”

“What was missing? Luck! We weren’t lucky after putting much efforts into the game,” he explained.

Emeteole hopes for El-Kanemi win against Sharks

El-Kanemi Warriors FC head coach, Kelechi Emeteole has expressed hope of continuing with the team’s unbeaten momentum by picking maximum points when they host Sharks FC on Sunday in a Glo Premier League match day 32 fixture in Katsina.

The Warriors have enjoyed a two-match unbeaten run including battling to a 1-1 draw last weekend against relegation-haunted FC Taraba in Jalingo.

Emeteole popularly called ‘Caterpillar,’ told www.npfl.ng that the Borno state team must come up with their big game attitude if they are to win at home against a Sharks side battling relegation. He added that teams in the lower rung of the league are dangerous and very difficult to play as they come fighting for whatever they can get without fear or favour.

‘Caterpillar,’ who joined El-Kanemi two months ago on a rescue mission, said the team have what it takes to retain their Glo Premier League status considering the way they have gradually climbed away from the relegation zone despite an attitude of wilting away when playing teams in the lower half of the table only to rise to the occasion when faced with big teams.

“Our match against Sharks of Port-Harcourt is another crucial match, forget the fact that they are in the struggling line. We don’t want to lose points because we don’t want to allow any team to overtake us.

“I don’t think we would take them for granted, teams like these are very difficult to beat. Looking at the way we outplayed Enyimba in our last home game we ought not to be where we are. I’m hopeful that we would get a good result. I would work with what I have to ensure that we get the required result,” he said.

Commenting on the draw against FC Taraba, Emeteole said: “We managed to get a point in our match against FC Taraba but I was still not happy because we did not play up to our expectation. We were giving away the ball and doing things very casually. Every department was faulty, the defence was relaxed, the attack were not biting, we would work on the whole team and put them on their toes.

“I’m happy that Lobi Stars also drew their last match because they are the team closest to us. If they had won, they would have moved above us. But still we retained our position and if we continue picking results like this, we would survive relegation.”
