Kaduna traders, women groups protest against El-Rufai, rally support for Gov Sani, Tinubu

Ahead of the 2027 elections, hundreds of market association members and women groups in Kaduna state staged a peaceful demonstration over the weekend, reaffirming their loyalty and support for the administration of Governor Uba Sani and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The protesters, who gathered across Kaduna metropolis, alleged they had bitter experiences under the previous El-Rufai administration.

They vowed to stand firmly with Governor Uba Sani and cautioned Kaduna residents against being swayed in a different direction.

Recounting their ordeals during the eight years of the past government, the demonstrators claimed that hundreds of market shops were seised, demolished, or confiscated, leading to severe financial losses, health complications, and even deaths among affected traders and business owners.

“We’ve been in the market for over 40 years and have never experienced the kind of set backs we suffered under the previous Governor.”

“A lot of lives were lost,a lot of finances were ruined by reason of his kind of policies. We are here to speak with one voice and say that anything that would kind of revive such kind of philosophy in Kaduna market, we don’t want it,” Daniel Audu Maigari, a stakeholder of the Kaduna Market associations, has said.

He explained, “This incumbent governor began by healing the wounds, the wounds that were really severed by the former Governor. Governor Uba Sani has been doing so,so very well and that’s why we’ve been with our leader, Alhaji Abdurrahman Mohammed, who like Governor Sani, has been charting the right course, ensuring programmes and plans that will heal these wounds.”

He said there was never been a time they are having the impact of leadership in Kaduna market, like they are having now.

“Now we’ve lots of incentives, lots of policies that are driving us to progress .We are now standing with one voice to denounce anything that would reverse this,” he said.

Alhaji Daiyabu Ismail Mai Gwanjo, Chairman Stakeholders of the Kaduna State Market Traders associations, said on behalf of their leader, Alhaji Abdurrahman Mohammed, his EXCO and all trader leaders in the 23 Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, they have gathered to unilaterally declare an unalloyed support to Governor Uba Sani who had taken care of them and protected their interests.

According to him, “We have to say so,haven had the harrowing experience in the hands of the past administration. The scar still remains and many are yet to recover.”

“But when Almighty Allah sent Governor Uba Sani to us,he declared he would not do anything bad to traders because the world thrives on businesses. All the most cherished countries like China, Canada, UAE, India, are very proud of and supportive to their traders and other business persons.”

“Unfortunately, we found ourselves during the previous administration that neither showed empathy nor sympathy to traders. An approximate number of 36 markets were demolished at that time.None of these markets was completely rebuild ,till date, and we are suspicious of the collaboration between the previous administration and the market developers.”

“We are therefore calling on Governor Uba Sani, our Governor of sympathy and understanding, to look at this issue with a view to resolving it.We are with Uba Sani a hundred percent, ” he added.

Hajiya Hadiza Abdulaziz,a woman leader of the market association, said they have gathered in multitudes to reiterate their support to the APC and Governor Uba Sani who has tremendously supported the market men and women in Kaduna State.

“Most of the market women had no shops because the shops were collected. But now we give God the glory everybody has gotten their shops back and nobody will collect it again,” she said.

She expressed happiness that those making the market women not to achieve, had left the party and government.

“We’ve been crying, a lot of market women don’t have capital, they have been deceiving us.But now,I believe Governor Uba Sani is going to assist us,”she added.

The protesters later took to the streets, displaying placards with various inscriptions denouncing the previous arrangements, and chanting slogans in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Uba Sani and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

JUST IN: Sule Lamido blasts El-Rufai over call to join SDP

…says ‘how can a grandson claim his grandfather knows nothing’

Former Governor of Jigawa State and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has fired back at former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, over his call for opposition politicians to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai, who recently announced his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to SDP, urged opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola to join him in his new political movement.

However, Lamido in an interview with BBC dismissed El-Rufai’s invitation, questioning his political ideology and commitment to national development.

“With all due respect, how does he expect us in PDP to leave and join another party? The PDP that we built is the same party that made him who he is today. How can a grandson claim his grandfather knows nothing?” Lamido said.

He recalled that El-Rufai once declared there were no political elders in Nigeria, insisting that he and his allies were the true power brokers.

“But now he claims he advised Buhari. If he truly had the power he once boasted of, why did he have to seek Buhari’s counsel?” Lamido asked.

The former governor stressed that, despite PDP’s internal challenges, it remained his political home.

“If PDP is struggling today, it is still the party that nurtured El-Rufai. If he claims PDP is dead, then he must remember that it is the party that gave him his political foundation. Whatever he has achieved today, PDP made it possible.”

Lamido argued that if he had any intention of leaving PDP, he would have done so in 2014 when APC was formed.

“If I didn’t join APC in 2014 when I was invited, and they left PDP out of anger, why are they now leaving APC? What has APC done to them?” he asked.

He maintained that governance should not be driven by emotions or personal grudges.

“Leadership is about patience, foresight, and working for the peace of the people and the nation. If you allow emotions to dictate your decisions, you will never lead objectively.”

He stressed that if the goal is to unseat President Bola Tinubu, it should not be based on personal grievances but on national interest.

“We should not fight Tinubu just because we are angry at him or seeking revenge. Leadership should be about prioritizing the country’s well-being rather than personal emotions.”

Lamido concluded by urging politicians to focus on strengthening the country rather than making decisions based on resentment.

El-Rufai in SDP’s ship: will it berth at the shore?

The Social Democratic Party is still in the euphoria of having Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna state in its fold, though their gameplay is kept to their chest.  The party has spoken of its capacity to turn the political tide as 2027 approaches. Will this ship contain the decampee’s purpose of wrestling power from the ruling party? Assistant Editor Emmanuel Badejo reports.

A lot is happening in the polity, especially in the national political arena. It is barely two years since the incumbent, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), took the reins of governance. And whether he will decide to run to succeed himself or not is yet to be known. Nevertheless several alignments and realignments are going on within the political circle to the benefit of all major political parties.

Three political parties – APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP) ruled the political atmosphere heralding Tinubu’s presidency. While the APC, being the party at the centre, has received more defectors in the last two years than others.

On Monday, an unpopular Social Democratic Party (SDP), went into frenzy when the immediate past governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, announced his resignation from the ruling party and entry into SDP. El-Rufai’s defection didn’t come to his party and political watchers as a surprise as he had earlier decried the running of the APC and threatened to defect. He had complained about some policies of the party on the pages of newspapers. “APC has left me,” he declared a month ago, hinting about his next move.” However, many pundits have expressed surprise at his choice of party – the SDP, which came fourth in the 2023 presidential election.

    Why I left APC, El-Rufai

Like other parties, the APC, is not without its internal issues.  One of the persons that had felt dissatisfied with the ruling party is El-Rufai, who had accused his former political family of lacking internal democracy.

In a statement on Monday titled “Onwards to the Future,” El-Rufai said the APC had deviated from the vision of its founding members, making it impossible for him to remain.

The statement reads, “As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of   political parties that created the APC. It had been my hope since 2013 that my personal values and that of the APC will align up to the time I choose to retire from politics.

“Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party.

“On my part, I have raised concerns in private and, more recently, in public regarding the capricious trajectory of the party. Therefore, at this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish.

“Founders rightly feel attached towards institutions they helped create, but one must be pragmatic enough to admit when a divergence appears unbridgeable. I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform but recognize that the party has since strayed and left me stuck in the vision of its well-meaning founding fathers and mothers.

“As a loyal party man, I worked to help secure the APC’s election victories in 2015, 2019 and 2023. I was one of the many governors elected on the party’s platform in 2015 and 2019 that stood for certain democratic and progressive principles to advance nation-building.

“My eight-year tenure in Kaduna State was devoted to implementing progressive policies to advance human development in education and healthcare, as well as expand infrastructure, promote equality of opportunity, create jobs and attract investments. These records count for little in the current APC that has castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable.

“Today, the 10th of March 2025, I have submitted a letter resigning my membership of the APC to my ward in Kaduna, effective immediately. Subsequent to this, I had concluded consultations with my mentors, colleagues and loyalists alike about the future, and have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities.

“Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God.”

El-Rufai added: “I therefore call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.”

If the tone of his letter is anything to go by, it suggests that the SDP will be used as a vehicle to galvanise other politicians to forge a common opposition against the APC.

    Rise to stardom

El-Rufai, a first class graduate of quantity surveying from the Ahmadu Bello University has been in the corridor of power for almost 30 years. He first tasted power when former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar appointed him as an economic advisor in 1998.

Through the influence of the then vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, President Olusegun Obasanjo later appointed El-Rufai as the inaugural Director, Bureau of Public Enterprises and Secretary of the National Council of Privatisation where he spearheaded the privatisation of government owned corporations under the supervision of Atiku.

In July 2003, when he was appointed the FCT Minister, he insisted on the implementation of the original masterplan. With the establishment of the Abuja Geographic Information System, the federal capital became the first municipality in Nigeria with a computerised land register and information system.

After El-Rufai’s appointment was approved by the Senate, he alleged that former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu and Senator Jonathan Zwingina asked for a $414,000 bribe before his nomination as a minister was approved. Both senators denied the accusation.

El-Rufai had a running battle with the Senate over allegations of exorbitant salaries paid to his staff without approval.

As FCT Minister, El-Rufai demolished 945 buildings and settlements in a bid to sanitise the territory. The residence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Senator Ahmadu Ali, in Asokoro, built over a water trunk line, was not spared.

At the twilight of the administration, El-Rufai presided over a ministerial/administrative panel which indicted his former boss, Atiku.  This made some loyalists of Atiku to accuse him of treasury and subversion of his benefactors.  Obviously, he had fallen out with his principal and aligned with Obasanjo.

    His political journey

El-Rufai joining the SDP is the fourth political platform that he would have been associated with publicly since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

His first port of call was the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) when President Olusegun Obasanjo emerged as President, after the June 12 debacle that lasted for six years with grave implications for national unity, progress and stability.

In 2011, he became a member of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) after his return from exile.

In 2013/14, he aligned with the APC, served as governor of Kaduna state 2015 to 2023.  He was nominated as a minister, but it was said that he failed security screening.  For that reason, his name was dropped. Now, he has ported as they say in common parlance to the SDP.

    Mixed reactions

Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has described the new addition to the party, Nasir El-Rufai, as an asset with a proven track record of exemplary public service.

Adebayo extolled the intellectual sagacity of El-Rufai, a two-term ex-governor of Kaduna State, but said the former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has some weaknesses to work on.

“The issue is that I see him as an asset, as a hard-working person and he has a verifiable and measurable track record of public performance,” the SDP chieftain said on national television a few hours after he made his defection plan known.

“What I believe is that he has his weaknesses which he needs to work on but I am not his mentor or therapist.

“What I know is that Nigerians have a bird’s eye view of El-Rufai, they will consider some of the comments that he’s made and some other aspects. Overall, Nigerians will say: ‘Here is a very good public servant.”

Adebayo said El-Rufai was welcomed into the SDP. He said, “Nigeria is diverse and you will find patriots on all sides. It doesn’t mean that if you narrow the discussion to particular areas, I will agree with Nasir El-Rufai on many of them but I agree with the fact that he is a hard-working person and a highly intelligent person.”

Adebayo said it took some engagements to get El-Rufai to dump the APC and join the SDP. He said the SDP won’t accept some of the ideas that the former Kaduna governor has been used to over the years.

He said, “The idea of the SDP is that if you are going to be in charge of Nigeria, you need to persuade people; El-Rufai did not run or crash into our party; we had discussions with him, we had ideological interactions, and even now, there are works in progress – some of his ideas that he is used to over the years, the SDP will not accept, and we are working on that.

“But my welcome note to him is to say: this is the place you can come to; not that he is fit for every job in the SDP, or every position in the SDP but with time, because he has intellectual curiosity, he has the ability to test ideas and he knows that we are very strong when it comes to social services and social intervention; we don’t believe that you have to privatise everything – we believe that some should be left to the government.

“Don’t be surprised that you’ll hear in two weeks’ time, or in two months’ time, that Adebayo and El-Rufai disagree vehemently on an issue in SDP.

Reacting to El-Rufai’s defection, Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson for the Bola Tinubu administration, dismissed the move as a desperate attempt to unseat the incumbent.

In a statement on X, Bwala questioned El-Rufai’s political ideology, saying, “Senior, @elrufai . I read the news today that you resigned from APC to join SDP. Well, I have nothing against you because you exercised your constitutional right.

“However, the motive is what we would interrogate in the coming days and reminds Nigerians that you are not a phenomenon that emerged like a clap of thunder out of a blue sky.

“We would intellectually remind you that associating with sore losers to unseat the incumbent is not an ideology, neither is it progressivism; it is simply an inordinate ambition that is destined to fail.”

A former APC National Vice-Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has described former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as too hasty.

Mr Lukman, a political ally of El-Rufai and former National Working Committee (NWC) member of APC, expressed concern that the former governor’s defection could disrupt ongoing negotiations for a broader political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although he stated that El-Rufai’s defection had been anticipated, he, however, said that he should have exercised more patience to allow coalition talks to be finalised.

While acknowledging El-Rufai’s right to political association, the former APC chieftain warned that the timing of his defection might have unintended consequences for opposition realignments.

Senator Shehu Sani has downplayed El-Rufai’s defection, saying the move won’t impact the ruling party’s fortune in the coming elections billed for 2027.

Sani, who is also from Kaduna like El-Rufai, believes the former Minister of the FCT holds no political relevance.

“Well, first of all, for those of us from Kaduna state, it [his defection] is a good riddance because he stands as a liability to the party in the state,” the former Kaduna Central senator said recently on a national television citing the APC’s losses under El-Rufai.

“I can back this with facts. In 2015, APC had two senators. By 2023, all the senatorial zones were taken over by PDP. Out of the 14 House of Representatives seats in Kaduna State, by the time he left [office as governor], almost nine of the seats were won by PDP, two by the Labour Party, and then three by APC. With him as a governor, the APC also lost the presidential election in Kaduna state.”

    Likely politicians to align…

Sources indicate that former Kaduna governor is also working to reconcile Atiku with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), in an attempt to merge opposition forces into a formidable alliance. The coalition is expected to attract former governors and ex-ministers eager to challenge the APC’s dominance.

According to insiders, some aggrieved chieftains of the APC like Abubakar Malami, former attorney general of the federation (AGF), and Abdullahi Adamu, former national chairman of the APC, among other leaders of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which merged into the APC in 2015, may leave the APC in the coming months.

Similarly, pundits say El-Rufai’s defection to the SDP may just be part of ongoing plan to form a broad alliance of opposition politicians to challenge the incumbent President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Time will tell if the party will spring surprises or not.

APC chieftain Mumuni cautions El-Rufai over ‘Lagos Boys’ remarks

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has strongly condemned the recent remarks made by former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, where he alleged that those who worked for the ruling party were sidelined while political positions were given to “Lagos boys.”

El-Rufai, in the BBC interview, also accused the APC government of deviating from its founding principles, alleging that positions were now being distributed based on favouritism rather than merit.

However, Mumuni’s reaction underscores growing discontent within the APC over El-Rufai’s statements, with party loyalists dismissing his claims as baseless and self-serving.

In a statement issued on Friday, the renowned security expert accused El-Rufai of making flippant and divisive statements that unfairly drag Lagos indigenes into his grievances.

According to him, “One needs to caution Mallam El-Rufai about his reckless statements. Although, we were together in the CPC before the formation of the APC, he should not drag Lagosians into his unfounded claims. Those he refers to as ‘Lagos Boys’ are not even the bonafide sons of the soil. They are individuals from other states who have merely lived in Lagos and remained loyal to the President for years. Hence, El-Rufai should be mindful of his utterances. I have no issue with him speculating about APC or the Tinubu government, but he should leave Lagos out of his rhetorics.”

The APC stalwart, who was actively involved in the party’s campaign security committee during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential election, questioned El-Rufai’s assertions, emphasizing that his contributions to the APC were undeniable.

According to him, “Some of us, who are bonafide Lagosians and worked tirelessly for the president’s election, have not been appointed to any positions. I was in the campaign crew and personally procured equipment from A to Z for the security committee where I served.

“Despite my contribution to the success of Asiwaju’s victory, you will not see me parading the presidency like some people. If the president finds me suitable for an appointment, I would gladly serve, but that time has not come yet. So, I will not allow a stranger to take me across my father’s compound.”

Mumuni further dismissed El-Rufai’s criticism of President Tinubu’s administration, asserting that the former Kaduna governor has no right to undermine the contributions of Lagos-based APC loyalists.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has warned former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai to guard his utterances, saying that, contrary to his claim, there is no kidnapping gang within the NPF.

The Kaduna Command of the NPF was reacting to El-Rufai’s post on his verified X handle, where he alleged that, one of his former Commissioners, Malam Jafaru Sani, was abducted by “Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang,” claiming to be Police.

In a statement signed by Kaduna Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan  it said, the Police have the legal, legitimate and constitutional right to arrest and investigate whoever is alleged or suspected to have committed an offence.

According to the statement, “The attention of the Kaduna State Police Command has been drawn to a statement credited to  former Governor of the State, Malam Nasir El Rufai, on his X handle, wherein he alleged that one of his former Commissioner Malam Jafaru Sani, was abducted by what he referred to as “Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang,’’ which he claimed to be the police.

“The former Governor further stated that Jafaru was remanded in prison custody by a magistrate without any police First Information Report or charges by the State Ministry of Justice.

“To put the records straight, there is no kidnapping gang within the Nigerian Police Force. The Nigerian Police as an institution, is created by the 1999 Constitution. The statutes mandate the Police to maintain law and order.

“In the discharge of this constitutional duty, the police have the legal, legitimate and constitutional right to arrest and investigate whoever is alleged or suspected to have committed an offence.

“Individuals, corporate organisations and government etc, Have the right to lodge a formal complaint to police and the police have the mandate to investigate such allegations and when it’s believed that an offence has been committed such matter be prosecuted or referred to court.

“The Command urges the members of public, especially individuals who have held positions of authority, to exercise caution and desist from frivolous and malicious allegations against any security agency.

“We urge individuals to always verify allegations before making any public statements. Making unverified allegations against security agencies not only mislead the public but also have the potential of undermining the law enforcement agencies.

“Citizens are encouraged to seek legal redress if they feel aggrieved, rather than resort to inflammatory comments that will heat up the polity,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Ata, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the government of President Bola Tinubu will remain focused on keeping to the promises of the party, despite the theatrics by El-Rufai.

The minister said El-Rufai’s anger with the ruling party stems from his failure to secure a ministerial position in the Tinubu administration, averring that El-Rufai was disqualified because he failed security screening.

According to Ata, El-Rufai’s recent attack on the Tinubu administration, including his decamping to the SDP, is the “dance of a sinking politician.”

Ata said: “His tenure as the minister of the FCT under President Olusegun Obasanjo was marked by contentious policies and an abrasive leadership style.

“This trend continued throughout his political journey, from his days in the opposition during the formative years of the APC to his tenure as a two-term governor of Kaduna State.

“It is, therefore, not surprising that in the present dispensation, while President Tinubu remains focused on tackling the multi-faceted challenges facing Nigeria, El-Rufai has chosen to embark on yet another round of political mischief.”

The minister, in a statement by his media aide, Seyi Olorunsola, said it was imperative for him to set the record straight and address El-Rufai’s theatrics, following his (El-Rufai’s) vitriolic outbursts and unwarranted attacks on the leadership of the APC and the Tinubu administration.

Ata pointed out that, during his reign as governor, El-Rufai presided over an era of unprecedented insecurity, where ethnic and sectarian violence reached alarming levels.

“Under his watch, Kaduna recorded some of the highest fatalities linked to communal conflicts and banditry activities.

“His leadership style was often criticised as divisive, with policies that alienated minority groups and exacerbated communal tensions in the state.

“El-Rufai’s latest political outburst stems from his personal disappointment over his failure to secure a ministerial position in the current administration.

“Feeling entitled to a role in President Tinubu’s government, he was unable to pass the necessary security clearance, leading to his rejection by the Senate. Since then, he has carried himself like a man scorned, unleashing a barrage of unfounded criticisms and engaging in political brinkmanship.

“His recent defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is nothing more than an act of desperation—an attempt to remain relevant in Nigeria’s political discourse. However, this move was long anticipated, given his history of political opportunism and self-serving maneuvers,” he said.

The minister said the administration remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s critical challenges, from economic reforms to infrastructural development and national security.

Ata added: “While detractors like El-Rufai seek to distract and derail progress, the government and its supporters remain undeterred.

“His political career, which has been marked by opportunism and a penchant for controversy, is practically over, and his recent actions are nothing more than the last gasps of a politician grasping at straws.”

El-Rufai storms SDP headquarters vows to position party for future

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has promised to position the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the future.

El-Rufai also disclosed his readiness to abide by the rule guiding the SDP.

He said this during his official visit to the national headquarters of SDP in Abuja where he held a meeting with the SDP National Working Committee (NWC).

According to a top member of SDP who was part of the meeting and pleaded anonymity, El-Rufai also made it known that he will use his influence and contact to grow the party.

He quoted El-Rufai to have said that: “Many of my followers had moved and joined SDP before me. I believe that APC is not what we intended it to be. I believe that I need to look for another party that I can continue in my political activities and further contribute to national development.

“I am ready to join forces with other opposition parties across, work with them to see how the nation can move forward.I promised to abide with the rules of the party.”

The SDP has, however, expressed panic over what it described as a plan to suppress party members in order to instill fear in the political circle.

The development, the party  said, is aimed at preventing further defection to the opposition party by using intimidation tactics.

A statement issued by the National publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, alleged that the persecution will commence with El-Rufai.

Aiyenigba said: “The Social Democratic Party (SDP) wishes to bring to the attention of all Nigerians that we have been informed about plans to suppress opposition figures in order to instill fear in political circles.

“The SDP has received reliable information indicating that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is concerned about the mounting momentum of our party. In response, the APC has decided to leverage its governmental control to fabricate criminal charges against our members.

“Our sources reveal that the persecution will commence with one of our prominent leaders, Malam Nasir El-Rufai. The government is planning to file multiple charges against him in Abuja and Kaduna imminently. In preparation for this, we have also learned that the federal government has instructed its agencies to prevent Malam Nasir El-Rufai from leaving the country.”

“This is my only and official TikTok page. Please join me for videos, comments and conversations on Nigeria politics as well as the activities of our new party Social Democratic Party (SDP). Welcome on board,” he said.

Interestingly, El-Rufai’s TikTok bio describes him as an “accidental public servant, certified ruffler of feathers and deliberate SDP member.”

This comes after his recent resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his decision to join the SDP on Monday.

El-Rufai rains curses on Gov Sani over arrest of ex-Commissioner

Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has rained curses on Governor Uba Sani, accusing him of using Police whom he described as the Governor’s ‘kidnapping gang’ to arrest former Commissioner, Ja’afar Sani who served under his administration.

Though details of his arrest were still sketchy as of press time, The Nation gathered security operatives arrested the former Commissioner on Thursday afternoon and immediately took him to court from where he was later moved to a correctional facility.

Sani, who served at various times as Commissioner for Local Government, Education and Environment, was allegedly picked up by policemen acting on the orders of the State Government.

El-Rufai nominated the former Commissioner to President Bola Tinubu to replace him as Minister in 2023 after the Senate withheld his confirmation, citing security reports from the State Security Service.

Sani recently defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with his former principal, El-Rufai.

The former Governor, in a reaction on his verified X handle, rained curses on Governor Sani and the security operatives who arrested his political ally.

El-Rufai, who closed his statement with curses in Hausa language said: “Allah Ya Isa! Allah ya Tsine ma su”, meaning; God will judge them! God punish them, alleged Sani’s real crime is his resignation from the APC, and joining the SDP.

According to the former Governor: “Our colleague and versatile former commissioner during the El-Rufai Administration – Mallam Jafaru Sani has been abducted in Kaduna by Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang claiming to be the police, this afternoon!

“Ja’afaru was remanded in prison custody by a magistrate without any police first information report or charges by the State Ministry of Justice.

“On inquiry, we have learned that Jafaru is being charged with money laundering – a federal offense that neither the State Judiciary or even the Police have jurisdiction to adjudicate or investigate.

“Jafaru’s real crime is his resignation from the APC, and joining the SDP – and having been proposed by he as the replacement ministerial nominee representing Kaduna State in August 2023.

“The tactics are similar to those used against another colleague of ours – Bashir Saidu when he was abducted on the 31st of December, 2024, and kept in captivity for 50 days before he was released on bail!

“The ignominious role of some henpecked and compromised magistrates and high court judges in the Kaduna State judiciary remains a source of great concern to us.

“We are watching and waiting as no condition is permanent, and there will be accountability for all decisions and actions, one day, soon.

“Allah Ya Isa! Allah ya Tsine ma su.”

El-Rufai‘s theatrics won’t distract Tinubu govt, says Housing Minister

Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Ata, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the government of President Bola Tinubu will remain focused on keeping to the promises of the party, despite the theatrics by the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

The minister said El-Rufai’s anger with the ruling party stems from his failure to secure a ministerial position in the Tinubu administration, explaining that El-Rufai was disqualified because he failed security screening.

According to Ata, El-Rufai’s recent attack on the Tinubu administration, including his defection to the SDP, is the “dance of a sinking politician.”

The minister, in a statement by his media aide, Seyi Olorunsola, said he needed to set the record straight and address El-Rufai’s theatrics, following his (El-Rufai’s) vitriolic outbursts and unwarranted attacks on the leadership of the APC and the Tinubu administration.

Ata pointed out that during his reign as governor, El-Rufai presided over an era of unprecedented insecurity, where ethnic and sectarian violence reached alarming levels.

“Under his watch, Kaduna recorded some of the highest fatalities linked to communal conflicts and terrorist activities. Infamously, he once admitted to making payments to foreign militias, a statement that remains a dark stain on his record and raises questions about his role in fostering peace and stability.

“His leadership style was often criticized as divisive, with policies that alienated minority groups and exacerbated communal tensions in the state.

“El-Rufai’s latest political outburst stems from his disappointment over his failure to secure a ministerial position in the current administration.

The minister said the administration remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing Nigeria’s critical challenges, including economic reforms, infrastructural development, and national security.

“While detractors like El-Rufai seek to distract and derail progress, the government and its supporters remain undeterred.

“His political career, which has been marked by opportunism and a penchant for controversy, is practically over, and his recent actions are nothing more than the last gasps of a politician grasping at straws,” Ata added.

  • Presidency, APC: El-Rufai’s defection to SDP inconsequential

Presidency, APC: El-Rufai’s defection to SDP inconsequential

The Presidency and Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday waved off the defection of Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Although the Presidency and APC  admitted that El-Rufai had a constitutional right to do so, they predicted that the former Kaduna State governor would fail in his decision to join forces bent on defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Also yesterday, Senator Shehu Sani said El-Rufai will have no political relevance in Kaduna State in 2027.

He added that his exit from the APC would strengthened the party because the people he chased away from the party have returned and working with Governor Uba Sani.

Presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala: “It (defection ) is simply an inordinate ambition that is destined to fail.”

President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said it was no surprise that El-Rufai   ‘’is going about everywhere to campaign against the President’’ because he was not made a minister.

The Kaduna chapter of the APC said it would not lose sleep over the defection of El-Rufai who served as governor between 2015 and 2023 on the party’s platform.

The former governor yesterday announced his decision to leave the ruling party for the  SDP via a post on his verified Facebook page.

In the post titled  “Nigeria  Update: Onwards to the future,” he accused APC’s current leadership of deviating from its founding principles and disregarding internal democratic processes.

The former governor cited a growing misalignment between his values and the current direction of the ruling party as the primary reason for his decision.

“The developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” El-Rufai said.

He   added that he had privately and publicly raised concerns about what he described as the party’s “capricious trajectory.”

A part of his post reads: “As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that created the APC. Since 2013,

‘’I have hoped that my values and those of the APC will continue to align until I choose to retire from politics.

“Today, 10th March 2025, I have submitted a letter resigning my membership of the APC to my ward in Kaduna, effective immediately.

‘’Before this step, I had concluded consultations with my mentors, colleagues and loyalists across the country about the future.

‘’I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities.

“Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God.

‘’I, therefore, call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the black race.’’

But Bwala said  El-Rufai’s defection was driven by personal ambition rather than political ideology.

In a post on his verified X handle, @DanielBwala, the presidential spokesman said the former governor’s motives would be scrutinised in no distant time.

He criticised  El-Rufai’s association with opposition forces, asserting that working with those seeking to unseat the incumbent government does not constitute a political ideology or progressivism.

Bwalla wrote: “Senior, @elrufai. I read the news today(yesterday) that you resigned from APC to join SDP. Well, I have nothing against you because you exercised your constitutional right.

“However, the motive is what we would interrogate in the coming days and remind Nigerians that you are not a phenomenon that emerges like a clap of thunder out of a blue sky.

“We would intellectually remind you that associating with sore losers to unseat the incumbent is not an ideology, neither is it progressivism; It is simply an inordinate ambition, that is destined to fail.”

Onanuga said on a breakfast programme on television that the former governor became critical of the Tinubu administration and the APC because he was not made a minister.

He said even though El-Rufai worked hard for Tinubu’s emergence as president, it was time for him to move on from the disappointment of not being a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The presidential spokesman added: “I will pity former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, he feels hurt that he was not made a minister, but I think it’s time for him to move on,” Onanuga said.

“You cannot continue to behave like a child as if someone stole his bread and things like that and then you are crying over spilt milk.”

While acknowledging that it was not out of place for El-Rufai to feel aggrieved having worked hard for the election of Tinubu, Onanuga said that the President was not in denial of his efforts.

“It is natural for him to feel bad that he has been excluded. I think the president has acknowledged in a recent tribute to him that Nasir did a lot in installing President Tinubu, and if he is not there it doesn’t mean he will bring down the roof,” he advised.

Onanuga urged El-Rufai to let go because he has been in public service since 1999, saying that “it’s time for him to move on.

Secretary of the Kaduna APC Yahaya Baba-Pate dismissed El-Rufai’s move.

He said that  APC  remained unperturbed by his defection.

He said:   “We are unperturbed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to another party.

‘’Our main focus in Kaduna is on how to deliver the state to both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in 2027.’’

Baba-Pate told reporters in Kaduna that  APC was growing from strength to strength in the state.

“The APC in Kaduna State is growing day by day, judging from the calibre of politicians streaming into the party daily. So, we are not disturbed by anybody defecting to another party.

“We are not disturbed and we are not going to lose our sleep over El-Rufai’s moves. The party in the state is growing more than before,” he said.

     * Shehu Sani: El-Rufai will have no political relevance in 2027

Senator Sani said the political relevance and fortune of the former governor will eclipse with his defection.

“ Leaving APC for SDP wouldn’t make any difference for someone with no political relevance again. One thing is sure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani will be voted again in 2027,’’  Senator Sani said.

    Adebayo welcomes El-Rufai

Leader of the SDP  Prince Adewole Adebayo, has welcomed El-Rufai, to the party.

Adebayo noted that with an avid worker like El-Rufai joining the party, it was time to liberate Nigerians from the shackles of poverty.

Writing in his official X handle, @Pres_Adebayo, he said: “On behalf of the teeming members of the SDP and patriotic democrats, who believe in Nigeria and her promise of inevitable greatness, I heartily welcome my dear brother El-Rufai to our party.

“With the hardworking and sagacious Mallam joining our ranks, an avid worker for the people has been enlisted in our forces against poverty and insecurity.

He emphasised that all genuine democrats and true nationalists, who believe in order, decency and honesty were welcomed to the SDP “where we are governed by law, not men, constitution not constipation of money or personal ambition.

“Together, following the law, the constitution and the manifesto of our party, we can set a good example of clean and ethical politics to emulate and rally Nigeria to the forefront of the liberation of Africa and peoples of the Black World.

“Good politics begets good governance. Let no one sit on the fence any further. There is no time to waste. Join us on the March again. God bless Nigeria.”

    Ex-governor’s action hasty, says Lukman

A political ally of El-Rufai and former National Working Committee (NWC) of  APC,  Salihu   Lukman, faulted the former governor’s defection, saying it was hasty.

Lukman expressed worry that the move by El-Rufai might affect the ongoing negotiations for a coalition of political forces ahead of 2027.

He said:  “He (El-Rufai) knows better and I do hope his decision is not going to become like a kind of break away from whatever we are doing.

‘’I hope that at the end, we should be able to reconcile and work together under one platform.”

National Coordinator of the Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ), a political Support group, Abdulhakeem Alawuje said the exit of the former governor from  APC would be the ruling party’s victory in the next general election.

Adegoke said: “ It is evident that this(defection) is nothing more than an empty threat that holds no real political weight.
