    Emmanuel empowers 50 youths, women

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has announced empowerment programme of N10, 000 million for 50 youths and women, as part of government’s effort to encourage small and medium scale business owners.

Emmanuel, who spoke at the constituency thanksgiving service/briefing of Mr. Onofiok Luke, the House of Assembly speaker, in Nsit Ubium Local Government, said five youths would be empowered in each of the 10 wards in the local government.

He said: “We need to support what Luke is doing today.

“I want you to select five youths per ward, making 50 in the 10 wards. At least two must be women.

“I want you to support your business initiative with N200, 000 for each of them to be self-reliant.

“We came here to support you, we came here to show appreciation for what you have done and we came here to also thank Nsit Ubium people for their support,” the governor said.

He added that the government was building three power sub-stations to improve power supply.

According to him, when the power station is completed, it will reduce the cost of the businesses engaged in by youths and women.

Emmanuel said his administration would provide jobs for unemployed youths.

He said his government would impact positively on people’s lives.

Luke said the programme was to eradicate poverty and ensure prosperity for his constituents.

He added: “These programmes represent not just the distribution of resources, but also the continuation of a journey towards sustainable employment, increase income and a prosperous future for the beneficiaries and their dependants.”

Luke said he had introduced skill development scheme and constituency support programme to the empowerment programme.

“One hundred students will be given N20,000  each as bursary, while 10 indigent students will receive N100,000  worth of scholarship each.

“In addition, five law students will receive N100, 000 each to support their studies at the Law School.”

The speaker said the beneficiaries of the support items, start-up capitals and business support funds, had been grouped to reflect the people in socio-economic strata with specific areas of needs.

He noted that the support was in partnership with Mrs. Martha Emmanuel’s pet project, Family Empowerment and Youth Reorientation Programme (FEYReP).

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Imo Idem, thanked God for being among the selected persons, saying he would spend the money given to him judiciously.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the items valued about N100 million, include cars, mini buses, scholarship for students, grinding machines, generators and vulcanising machines.

Others are motorcycles, hairdressing machines, sewing machines, welding machines, desktop computers, text books, among others.

Uyo church collapse was human error, says Emmanuel

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel yesterday attributed the Reigners Bible Church building collapse to human error.

This was the preliminary verdict of the seven-man panel set up by the government headed by Justice Umoekeyo Essang (Chairman).

Its members are: James Utiaruk, Essien Nkanga, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abibo; Prophet John Linus, Asuquo Okon and James Amiang.

Mrs. Emem Victor Daniel of the Ministry of Justice in Uyo, the state capital, is the Secretary.

Speaking yesterday at the 2016 Akwa Ibom Christmas carol at the Uyo Township Stadium, Emmanuel said the state had not fully recovered from the shock.

The governor noted that what fell was a church building (man’s handiwork) and not God’s promise.

The roof of the church on Uyo Village Road collapsed during the consecration service of Apostle Akan Weeks as Bishop.

The govrnor was the special guest of honour at the event.

Twenty-six persons have been confirmed dead while scores of others were injured.

Emmanuel said: “Ever since God created the sun and put it there, we have never had a blackout. The sun has never run out of gas. The collapse of the building was man’s error. That is why we have set up a high-powered panel of enquiry to determine what went wrong.

“We dedicated two days of mourning to the souls of the departed. We activated the full machinery and resources of government to aid the rescue and evacuation of victims of the tragedy. We have also assured the victims’ families of government’s resolve to stand by and with them during this time of mourning.

“Ever since Mary Slessor and other blessed missionaries came to our shores and evangelised our ancestors, we have come to see the church as a shelter of refuge. The church has given us hope and inspiration. The church has showered blessings on us and raised our moral tone and texture.”

The governor said he led the team of rescuers and called in specialist physicians from across the nation.

He assured Akwa Ibom residents everybody’s life mattered and the state government would save their lives in any situation.

We’re with you in prayers, Ikpeazu tells Emmanuel

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has said residents of his state are praying for Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel and his people on the church building collapse.

In a statement yesterday by Ikpeazu’s Chief Press Secretary, Enyinnaya Appolos, the governor said: “Governor Ikpeazu wishes to express the heartfelt condolences of his government and the people of Abia State to …Emmanuel and the people of Akwa Ibom State on the tragic collapse of Reigners Bible Church building at Uyo…

“The government and people of Abia State are saddened to hear of the unfortunate collapse of the church building, which claimed dozens of precious lives, with the governor barely escaping from the scene of the tragedy.

“Our hearts are with the government and people of Akwa Ibom State at this tragic time and we join others in praying that the Almighty God will give the family and friends of the bereaved the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“Accept our deepest condolences and may God be with our brothers and friends as we pray for happier memories. We’re with you in prayers.”

    Emmanuel sets up probe panel

The Akwa Ibom State Government will probe the collapsed building deaths, Governor Udom Emmanuel said yesterday.

He said in a broadcast that a “high powered” commission of inquiry would be set up.

Emmanuel said he was in the church when the incident occurred and personally supervised the rescue operations and evacuation of the injured to the hospital.

He said: “A high-powered panel of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the immediate and remote factors leading to the collapse of the church building with a view to forestalling the re-occurrence of any such incident and bring to book any persons found to have compromised professional standards in the construction of the building’’

He commiserated with the families of the victim of the disaster and announced that the state government would bear the medical expenses of the injured.

He appealed for calm and prayed for those in critical condition in hospitals.

While   urging the Christian community in the state to show their support love and understanding in prayers, Governor Udom called on people to avoid undue speculation because the situation was being given the best possible attention.

He said: “I personally supervised the rescue operation and evacuation of of the injured to the hospital; I directed all emergency organization agencies of Government and corporate organization especially the construction companies to be involved in the exercise, they acted promptly and I commend them.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State had earlier expressed sadness over the tragic incident although it said it was avoidable.

A statement by Publicity Secretary Itwa Iwak, said the cruel fate that visited Akwa Ibom people at the Reigners Bible Church was due to human error and was avoidable.

The party welcomed the decision of the government to set up a panel of enquiry to look into the remote and immediate causes responsible for the sad event.

The statement reads: “It is our hope that the panel will do a thorough job and that government will be guided by its reports in formulating such policies that will make sure we do not suffer such monumental tragedies in the future.

“The APC believes and hopes that as this great country redirects its resources and innate potentials towards a more secure, sustainable and prosperous future, avoidable accidents like the Reigners Bible church mishap will be blotted out of our existence by the patriotic commitment of all citizens to the APC’s CHANGE ethos which is designed to enthrone an ordered, disciplined and prosperous country for all.”

  • Governor Emmanuel and farmers

SIR:  I wish to commend Governor  Udom Emmanuel  of Akwa Ibom State on the recent training of about 2000 farmers on poultry farming.

As part of effort to generate employment through agriculture, the government of Akwa Ibom has trained 2000 farmers on production, processing, branding and marketing of poultry produce under  the anchor borrower programme of the Central Bank of Nigeria. This is a step in the right direction.

However,  I want to strongly appeal to the governor to make sure that the project is pursued to the end. The trained farmers are full of hope that better days are here. Farmers, especially poultry farmers, are facing a lot of challenges when it comes to capital and marketing of farm products.

The  anchor borrower programme of the Central Bank of Nigeria will really help farmers in Akwa Ibom State and much food will be produced.

Kudos to Governor Emmanuel for hosting a whopping 2,000 farmers for the capacity building training. We want more of this kind of initiative in the state!

    Tony Kings,

    Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

  • Emmanuel’s big stick

    Emmanuel’s big stick

Last Saturday, Akwa Ibom State Governor Emmanuel Udom wielded the big stick. He dissolved the State Executive Council (EXCO). Commissioners were ordered to hand over to the Permanent Secretaries in their ministries.

Emmanuel’s cabinet was populated mostly by fellows who served his godfather and predecessor, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Emmanuel, a former banker and greenhorn in politics, became governor in 2015 using Akpabio’s structure. He had served him as Secretary to the State Government (SSG)? having been pulled from his job as an Executive Director in Zenith Bank Plc.

The statement announcing the casting away of Akpabio’s men was signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Etekamba Umoren. Like most of such statements, it gave no reason for the dissolution. It simply said: “His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, Governor, Akwa Ibom State has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council with immediate effect.

“The governor expresses his deep and profound appreciation for the contributions of the EXCO members to the development of the state, and wishes them success in their future endeavours.

“Permanent Secretaries in the respective ministries are to take over the running of the ministries pending the reconstitution of a new Executive Council.”

Before last weekend’s sack of these men not a few of them were unhappy. Off record, many of them complained that the governor did not empower them to do their job. They claimed he relied only on the few men in his government who were not nominated by the senator.?

Akpabio was the oracle of Akwa Ibom politics. He spoke and others must obey. When he settled for Emmanuel, there were 22 others in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who wanted the job. Two of them were his former deputies, who got the boot when their loyalty became suspect.

To Akpabio, neither of his former deputies, Patrick Ekpotu and Nsima Ekere, now Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was good enough to replace him. The 20 others were no match too.

The MD/CEO, Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone Authority (OGFZA), Umana Okon Umana, who used to be his ally, read the handwriting on the wall. He defected to the opposition, where he tried his luck but was ‘crushed’ by Akpabio’s bulldozers.

Umana went to court but nothing came out of it. At the time the electoral dispute was on, an interesting drama played out in the state. Many were asking for the state’s debt profile. Emmanuel chose not to give this figure as contained in Akpabio’s handover note. The N64.5b figure he released last year was not directly linked to Akpabio.

Emmanuel, in a letter to the House of Assembly, he asked for restructuring of loan but did not include the details of the debts he wanted restructured into bonds.

The governor said the measure would facilitate fiscal stability and provide avenue to liquidate its huge debt stock to cover a period of 25 years.

The letter read: “In order for Akwa Ibom State to join other states, it becomes necessary for the state to partner with the Debt Management Office (DMO) of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Finance on this directive to utilise the benefits.

“The FGN Bond will help the state to substitute short-term higher-cost bank debts with long term lower-cost debt.”

There was drama at the assembly over the letter. The simple process of moving motion to accept the letter took time.

The member representing Nsit Atai, Hon. Mark Esset while standing up to move the motion, said: “Mr. Speaker, I am handicapped and my hands are shaking.”

The letter was handed over to the Finance and Appropriation Committee for further screening and investigation.

The hush-hush about the state’s debt profile did not start with the letter to the Assembly. The Transition Committee set up by the state government chaired by former Head of Service (HoS), Mr. Sunny Akpadiaha, did not also state the assets and liabilities bequeathed by the Akpabio administration.

When I first wrote about Akpabio and Emmanuel last year, I had raised some posers: “What is Emmanuel really afraid of? A fight with Akpabio? Or is he just postponing the fight? Or he does not want to be seen as opening Akpabio’s yansh in the public? Or is the oracle still in charge and capable of pulling the rug off Emmanuel’s feet? Whatever it is, it is the people and accountability that are being taken for granted. The people deserve to know. Nothing more, nothing less. Emmanuel’s will should not be allowed to prevail.”

My intervention at the time earned me names. I was accused of trying to cause a fight between the two gentlemen. I was practically called an Akpabio hater. This was at a time an aide of the ex-governor – off record- accused the governor of messing up and threatening that ?he would not get a second term.

Last month, there was a report that the then Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Finance, Akan Okon, leaked information on Akpabio to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). That came about a month after the Akwa Ibom government secured an interim injunction from an Uyo High Court barring the EFCC, the police, and other federal agencies from examining the account books of the state government.  The injunction, which was later vacated by the court, was seen as a move to shield Akpabio from EFCC’s claws.

Okon, who is one of the Akpabio men sacked at the weekend,  denied leaking sensitive information on Akpabio.

“Since I became the commissioner for finance I have never been invited to the EFCC, so at what forum would I have given information on Akpabio to the EFCC? Or does EFCC now take information by phone?” Okon said during an interview programme on a local radio station in Uyo.

The sack of Okon and his colleagues has made me wonder who will determine who gets what in the cabinet to be reconstituted. Grapevine information suggests the governor wants to call the shots.

My final take: The interest of the people of Akwa Ibom should be paramount in choosing the next members of the State Executive Council.

Certainly, the story is just evolving.

  • Emmanuel dissolves Akwa Ibom Exco

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council (Exco) with immediate effect.

A three-paragraph statement, titled: Dissolution of the State Executive Council, by the Secretary to State Government (SSG), Sir Etekamba Umoren, said the governor expressed his appreciation to the former Exco members for their contributions to the development of the state and wished them success in their future endeavours.

The statement reads: “His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel …has approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council with immediate effect.

“The governor expresses his deep and profound appreciation for the contributions of the Exco members to the development of the state and wishes them success in their future endeavours.

“Permanent secretaries in the ministries are to take over the running of the ministries pending the reconstitution of a new Executive Council.”

  • Emmanuel urges governors’ wives to promote unity

Emmanuel urges governors’ wives to promote unity

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has urged women to use their numerical strength to promote the nation’s unity.

Emmanuel spoke yesterday when members of the Southern Governors’ Wives Forum (SGWF) visited him at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.

Governors’ wives on on the entourage are: Mrs. Olufunsho Omosun (Ogun), Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu (Abia) and Dr. Linda Ayade (Cross River).

Others are: Mrs. Racheal Umahi (Ebonyi), Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Mrs. Bonlade Ambode (Lagos) and Dame Edith Okowa (Delta).

The governor said Nigeria had been left behind in the development matrix of the global community and there was need for the women to use their platform to change the status quo.

He hailed the governors’ wives for brainstorming on how to improve the living standard of the people, particularly the girl-child and the less privileged, through their pet projects.

Emmanuel also praised the forum for avoiding biases, gender, ethnicity and political platforms to complement the developmental programmes of their husbands.

The hostess and governor’s wife Mrs Martha Emmanuel said her colleagues were in the state for their quarterly meeting and to brainstorm on how to improve the lives of the people in their states.

She expressed appreciation to the President’s wife, Hajia Aisha Buhari, for providing the platform form the governors’ wives to improve the living standard of the people, particularly women and children.

  • Recession won’t limit Nigeria, says Emmanuel

Recession won’t limit Nigeria, says Emmanuel

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has said the recession will not limit the country.

The governor said Nigeria would overcome the challenges and the global depression.

Emmanuel addressed State House correspondents yesterday in Abuja after meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

He said: “Everything we do, I keep reassuring Nigerians. We want to be together in Nigeria. So, whatever we discussed, it is in the interest of our citizens. We make sure we put our heads together to solve our challenges as a developing nation.

“Let me assure Nigerians that there is no developing country that doesn’t go through what we go through. But how do we make effort to face the challenges? That’s why you see us putting heads together, trying to appraise and trying to find a solution that will be enduring.

“We are not limited by what we see all over the world. We are not limited by the recession and, based on what people see, we will go beyond that. We shall go beyond biases: ethnicity, religion, even gender. We shall rise in togetherness. That’s the message.”

On his visit to the Villa, Emmanuel said: “I think we will always come here because we were mandated by the governors’ forum to come and discuss certain issues with the Vice President. That’s why you saw two of us here. We were supposed to be three but the third governor could not make it.”

According to him, the meeting was fruitful because some issues were tackled.

On the anniversary of the creation of Akwa Ibom State, he said: “My state will be 29 on September 23. We chose to mark it and thank God. A child that was born 29 years ago is a father. As a state, development strides have been made in the last 29 years and where God has brought us. That is why we want to thank God and make the citizens know where we are going to.

On the economic challenges, the governor said: “There is recession. You must give hope to the citizens. I think we are on the right path and we are going somewhere. I know that where we are going will bring about prosperity, job creation and other good things. At the end of the day, we just want to improve on the living standard of every citizen. I believe and what we normally say once the passion is right is that nothing is impossible.

“Once the government is ongoing, there is always a project. We don’t celebrate projects; it is either you inaugurate or build a new one. But I am one governor who won’t make so much noise. We still have a long way to go.

“You can also say you have achieved so much while you stamped out hunger, unemployment. You cannot be happy when you see a young man who has finished school but has not been employed. So, we cannot roll out the drums to celebrate but only to thank God. We are going to the Promised Land and we will be there. But mind you, on the way to the Promised Land, you have to pass through the wilderness.”
