  • Allegation of $1.2m London house untrue – Sen. Oduah

Allegation of $1.2m London house untrue – Sen. Oduah

A National Assembly member, Sen. Stella Oduah, has debunked allegation that she bought a 1.2 million dollars house in England while she was Minister of Aviation, saying it is untrue.

She said at a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja on Thursday that the allegation made in an online publication was a total falsehood, without any foundation.

The online medium’s report alleged that the senator purchased the property under another name and that the ownership of the property was uncovered when she attempted to rent it out in March, 2017.

Oduah described as “unfortunate’’, the medium’s penchant for continual publication of falsehood about politicians and people in government.

“Of course, the allegation is not true, it cannot be true.

“It is unfortunate that we have a country where journalists will copy a story without verifying the authenticity of that story.

“When you read my statement on it later, then it will be for you to make up your mind. But, categorically it is untrue and it is unfair,’’ she said.

The lawmaker recalled that the same online medium had reported that she purchased two BMW cars when she was minister.

She said that the medium only published lies, adding that the vehicles were property of the Federal Government, which she never bought for herself or took away when she left the minister.

According to her, that was the same way they carried a story about bullet proof cars; bullet proof cars were never bought by me, not even by the agency they alleged.

“In fact, bullet proof cars were never a transaction that was not approved.

“They were two vehicles that were on higher purchase by the agency and the ministry directed that because of the need as proposed by the agency, they should go ahead and do the higher purchase.

“Suddenly, for the online medium, higher purchase turned into procurement; I don’t know if there is a similarity between higher purchase and procurement.

“So, I now realise and symphatise with anybody that works or tries to work for government, because you will have the likes of Sahara Reporters thrive on making your life difficult.

“I rise above that at all times because I know that what they say is never the truth, particularly on my case, it is not true.

“It cannot be true; why will I purchase vehicles on higher purchase and then it is on the ministry’s and agency’s name, why?

“That same vehicle, I never drove it for one day and when I was leaving the ministry, I didn’t take it along with me?

“The question should be `where are those bullet proof cars today?” she said.

Oduah blamed the negative reports on persons who were unhappy with her efforts to revive the nation’s aviation industry when she served as the minister.

  • Malala excited after winning place at Oxford University

Malala excited after winning place at Oxford University

Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai said on Thursday she was “excited” after winning a place to study at Oxford University.

Yousafzai, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize when she was 17, said she had been accepted at Oxford to study Politics, Philosophy, and Economics.

She joined thousands of other students in Britain in discovering where they will go to university after getting their final school results.

Others to have studied the same course at Oxford, one of the world’s top universities, include former British Prime Minister David Cameron and late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Yousafzai, now 20, came to prominence when a Taliban gunman shot her in the head in 2012, after she was targeted for her campaign against efforts by the Taliban to deny women education.

She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

“So excited to go to Oxford!! Well done to all A-level students, the hardest year. Best wishes for life ahead!” she said in a tweet.

A-levels are final year exams for school students.

After recovering from the Taliban attack, she has attended school in England.

Early figures showed a fall in the number of places allocated by universities, although the proportion of students scoring top grades rose.

University admissions service UCAS said on its website the decrease in the number of university acceptances had been driven by a fall in acceptances from older students and fewer students from the European Union.

UCAS said 416,310 people had been accepted to degree courses on A-level results day, down two percent compared to 2016.

Over one in four of the grades was an A or A*, the best ratings, up 0.5 percentage points in 2016.

  • Against All Odds: Odujinrin becomes 1st African to travel round the world

Against All Odds: Odujinrin becomes 1st African to travel round the world

It is a common saying that the world would make way for a man whose words and actions shows that he knows where he is going. The very inspiring story of Captain Ademilola Oyewale Odujinrin; a Nigerian pilot who began his expedition to fly round this terraqueous globe we call earth in nine months is a quintessential example of a dreamer bringing his dreams to fruition “against all odds”.

He is the first pilot of African descent to fly solo round the world in a relatively small plane. His achievement is a great beacon light of hope to this generation; one that has totally changed the narrative for good about the African people, especially – Nigeria.

Captain Odujinrin ‘Lola’ as he is fondly called held a press briefing on Thursday, 13th of April, 2017 at the press conference with newsmen held at the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Lagos. ‘Lola’ dedicated his achievement to the Nigerian people; especially to the younger generation of dreamers. He urged the youths to embrace hard work and persistence, and to believe that they only can make or create their luck.

According to him, his overwhelming passion for Aviation started when he was yay high – between 7 to 10 years of age. His greatest inspiration was his late Uncle who was a pilot who sometimes take him inside the cockpit of the aircraft: That was the beginning of his unflinching zest for Aviation. “I can remember one night I was flying a kite and I noticed aeroplanes flying across the sky. Then I asked my dad where the planes were going. He replied me saying ‘they are going to Lagos – Murtala Mohammed Airport’,” he said. That was also a seminal moment for his aviation foray.

Talking about some of the challenges that he and his team had to grapple with, Lola explained saying, “The challenges were numerous, however, the major one was the finance. However, one that was closely associated to securing finance was self-believe. If we believe enough in ourselves and our dreams, financial challenges can always be surmounted.

The second most challenging part of the journey was the weather. In most parts of the world it was rainy season. Although in Nigeria the season for rain is usually in June, but it was different for other places. We (I and my plane) were stuck in south-eastern Asia for two months,” he said.

His remarkable journey which began in June 2016 in Washington DC, U.S.A, was launched by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who blessed the voyage and described Nigeria as a fortunate country with great people capable of changing Africa for better as there is one Nigerian out of every four black people on earth.

The World Tour saw Lola fly over 25 countries, had 35 stops, and for 300 odd hours in his small plane which hardly provided him the opportunity to stretch his body during his time in the air for a duration of 9 months. He began his journey from Washington DC, U.S.A, to Iceland, then Europe, and into Africa via United Arab Emirates (UAE), India, and Asian sub-continent. He flew over some islands before undertaking the longest legs of the journey across the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California, and back to Washington DC where he ended the journey.

Lola in some spates of emotions and words recounted his experiences while seeking sponsorship and endorsement, especially from Nigerian organizations. According to him, it is very regrettable that no Nigeria Company was willing to offer support and endorsement for the project. It took visionary and benevolent companies like Transcend, Air Djibouti, and Tolaram Group which are foreign companies to see the importance of the project, and the sundry benefits it has; not just to the companies, but to changing the narrative of the African people for good.

With respect to creating an enabling and congenial environment for dreamers like Lola to thrive and not just survive, he said “I appreciate and understand that I was privileged to travel, however, I know we also have some Nigerians who travel and wasted the opportunity; so the argument is on both sides. What we are advocating is for the government in whose hands the destinies of these many and ubiquitous dreamers are, should create an enabling environment for them to achieve their dreams.

“The Ooni of Ife spent sometime in the United States talking about creating an enabling environment for talent, skills, and brainchildren to find expression, application, and fulfillment.

“Our policy wonks in the senate and the federal government need to begin to create more policies and put more concrete structure on ground that will enable you and I fulfill our Nigerian dream.

“Also talking about the enabling environment, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the level of infrastructures – roads, street lights etc., in Lagos. Lagos has change; now that is a positive step in the right direction.

Lola restated that the reason for him embarking on such a long, arduous, and sometimes dangerous journey was to be a joyous daybreak to end the long nights of psychological debacles and manacles placed upon the Nigerian youths by their environment. Everyone is a star, and should be given the right environment to blossom, boom, and not gloom.

‘Lola’ as he is fondly called by his friends and associates, hails from Ijebu Remo, he was given birth to in England, before his parent relocated to Lagos, and like every other Lagos child he grew up and spent his childhood in Lagos.

Ikeme injured, Rohr names Okeowo as replacement

Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, has been ruled out of Thursday’s friendly against Senegal in London following an injury.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Wolverhampton Wanderers of England goalkeeper was missing in the team’s final training session due to a knock.

With Ikeme out injured, the Super Eagles’ gaffer, Gernot Rohr, drafted in relatively unknown goalkeeper, Tope Okeowo of Peckham All Stars, as a replacement.

It is very likely that Okeowo will man the goal for Nigeria as the other invited goalkeepers, Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, were still being expected as at Wednesday night.

NAN also reports that Okeowo, a former Golden Eaglets goalkeeper, is Peckham Town’s first choice.

Okeowo had been at Peckham Town for many years, helping his team get promotion from Division Two to Division One in their first season in the Kent County League.

Rashford unveils three lions new away kit

Marcus Rashford is the poster boy both for England’s new away kit and his country’s footballing future.

A new, two-tone Nike strip will replace the current red version as the Three Lions chase a place at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The 19-year-old has been selected to be the poster boy for the new Nike kit as England chase a place at the 2018 World Cup

England will wear the kit for the first time in a fixture on Wednesday when they face Germany in a friendly in Dortmund.

Rashford, who has emerged as an exciting option for England following a remarkable 12-month journey since his professional debut last February, represents a new generation of talent for the Three Lions.

The teenager scored on his debuts for both United and then for England in a friendly against Australia in the build-up to Euro 2016.

Rashford was one of very few high points for England at the tournament as they were embarrassingly knocked out by Iceland.

Speaking about that disappointment to the Player’s Tribune, Rashford said the post-match words of Wayne Rooney have stuck with him since.

The kits will cost the same as the Euro 2016 ones did – £101 for a full adult kit and £60 for the shirt, £84 for a child’s full strip

He said: ‘When we were knocked out by Iceland at the Euros, it was a massive disappointment. We were all sitting around in the dressing room after the match, not sure what to think. But then Wayne gets up. And he says one thing – “Keep your head up. We’ve got a lot to fight for in the future. Look forward”.

‘He says it to each individual person. One by one, he goes up to us and looks us in the eye. So that’s where we are now. Our heads are up and we’re fighting for the future.

Rashford, who started for United on Sunday, is one of only three striking options available for England in Germany.

  • Man Utd striker Rashford to join England senior squad

Man Utd striker Rashford to join England senior squad

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 19-year-old was initially expected to feature for the England Under-21 side in friendlies against Germany and Denmark next weekend.

But with England forwards Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney both ruled out through injury, Rashford will be called up.

England face Germany away in a friendly before a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on 26 March.

Rashford made a goal-scoring debut for England in a 2-1 win over Australia in May last year and has collected six senior caps.

He was a late inclusion for Manchester United in their 1-0 FA Cup defeat by Chelsea on Monday, having been omitted from the initial squad due to illness.

England captain Rooney was ruled out of Manchester United’s trip to the capital with a leg injury sustained in a training ground collision.

Also, Tottenham striker Harry Kane went off with an ankle injury against Millwall on Sunday.

Spurs said the injury is similar to the one Kane picked up against Sunderland on 18 Sept. 2016.
