    Enugu police rescue woman from transnational human trafficking, arrest suspect

    The Enugu State Police Command has foiled another transnational human trafficking operation, rescuing a 25-year-old woman who was trafficked to Mali for prostitution.

    The police also arrested a 69-year-old man, identified as Eze Boniface, in connection with the crime.

    The arrest was made by officers from the Igbo-Eze North Police Division, following a complaint filed by the victim’s parents.

    Preliminary investigations indicate that in May 2023, the suspect and his accomplices allegedly lured the victim and her parents with promises of lucrative employment in a foreign textile company, offering a daily wage of $100.

    Contrary to these promises, the victim was trafficked to Mali, where she was reportedly forced into prostitution.

    The syndicate is said to have profited 500,000 CFA francs from her exploitation.

    Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to dismantle the trafficking network, uncover other criminal activities linked to the syndicate, and apprehend those involved.

    Giwa warned parents, guardians, and young people to be cautious of false promises of employment abroad and to avoid falling prey to human traffickers.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the command remains committed to protecting citizens and curbing human trafficking in the region.

    The Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, Enugu State Police Command, has arrested four male suspects for conspiracy, staged kidnapping, and defrauding the parents of a staged kidnapping victim of N2million.

    The suspects included Chidera Godwin Ako, 21, who orchestrated his kidnapping; Okechukwu Philip Chidalu, 19; Ifeanyi Ugwu, 20; and Ossai Chigozie, 35, recently released from the Nigerian Correctional Service custodial centre.

    They were arrested about 1 p.m on May 24, this year. with a local single-barrel gun and two live cartridges.

    According to the spokesman of the state Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, Chidera was reported missing on May 4.

    “Subsequently, on May 21, 2025, his accomplices used his phone to demand a N10million ransom from his parents, sending a video of him bound, appearing beaten, with the recovered gun pointed at him.

    “The parents pleaded for his release and paid N1.5million into a provided account, on May 22, but the suspects failed to release him. After an additional N500,000 payment, the police operatives swiftly arrested Chidera and his accomplices at a POS centre during an attempt to withdraw the funds.

    “The suspects confessed to the crime and will be arraigned upon completion of investigations,” the police said.

    Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, while describing the criminal act as unfortunate, has ordered further arrests of anyone linked to the crime.

    He urged the public to report suspected kidnappings and avoid hasty ransom payments, emphasising that some cases might be staged.

    Operatives of the Enugu state police command have neutralised a suspected kidnapper and rescued a male victim following an early-morning operation on Saturday, May 3, 2025. 

    The police recovered a locally made double-barrelled pistol loaded with two live cartridges and a green Nissan Almeria car used by the kidnappers. 

    According to Enugu State Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects abducted the victim in his Mercedes Jeep after firing sporadically within the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Enugu around 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2025, before transporting him to an unknown location. 

    Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa, upon receiving information, swiftly mobilised operational and intelligence assets, ensuring the victim’s safe rescue and the apprehension of the criminals.

    “Through coordinated efforts, the police operatives trailed the gang to their hideout in a valley within the Ngwo area.

    “A gunfight ensued, leading to the neutralisation of one of the suspects and the safe rescue of the victim.

    “However, the suspects had forcefully transferred the sum of two million, two hundred and fifty thousand naira (₦2,250,000.00) from the victim’s account after initially demanding a ransom of twenty million naira (₦20,000,000.00),” Ndukwe said.

    He said the CP, while commending the operatives for the swift and successful operation, mandated them to intensify efforts to apprehend the remaining fleeing suspects and recover the victim’s vehicle.

    He reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to rid the State of unrepentant criminals, soliciting citizens’ continued support.

    Police bust kidnap gang, nab five for other offences

    The Police Command in Enugu State says its operatives have busted a kidnapping gang hideout and nabbed five suspects for burglary and car stealing within the state.

    The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Enugu.

    Ndukwe said that the feat was achieved following intensified fight against crime this yuletide.

    According to Ndukwe, multiple operations carried out by the command have led to recovery of firearms, ammunition, military uniforms and stolen items, including a car.

    He said that on Dec.15, a combined team of operatives from Nsukka Area Command, acting on intelligence, raided a kidnapping gang’s hideout in Nru community within Nsukka council area.

    “The suspects engaged the operatives in a gunfight, but fled with gunshot injuries under superior police firepower.

    “A loaded revolver pistol, a cut-to-size single-barrel gun, two live cartridges, military camouflage uniforms, a Moniepoint POS machine and ATM cards were recovered.

    “Preliminary investigations revealed the gang’s involvement in a recent case of kidnapping and other heinous crimes in the Nsukka axis. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.”

    The command spokesman said that in a different operation, on Nov. 14, operatives from the Abakaliki Road Police Division of the Command arrested four burglary suspects.

    “The suspects had burgled and stole bicycles, laptops, phones and other items from a house in GRA, Enugu.

    “The stolen items were recovered, while the suspects confessed to the crime,” he said.

    Ndukwe noted that operatives from the Central Police Station in early December, apprehended a suspect for stealing a red Volkswagen Passat car from where it was parked inside premises of a church at Coal Camp, Enugu.

    He said that the car was recovered, while the suspect confessed to the crime.

    “The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring public security and safety in Enugu State during the festive period and beyond.

    “He urges citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious individuals and their activities, and also cooperate with law enforcement agents to maintain peace and security across the state,” he said.

    Gunmen have attacked a police checkpoint along Presidential Road, Enugu, killing two police officers.

    This is coming barely one week after two policemen and three vigilante operatives otherwise known as Neighbourhood Watch Group, were killed after an attack on them by a gang of rampaging hoodlums in Igga community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

    The latest incident, our correspondent gathered, happened Friday night, May 10, 2024, around 9.30 P.M. when the officers serving in Ogui Division, were conducting a stop-and-search along Presidential Road, Enugu.

    According to the spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, the attackers were suspected to be the armed members of the IPOB/ESN criminal elements, who operated in three SUV jeeps.

    Ndukwe disclosed that the operatives returned fire, forcing the hoodlums to escape with varying degrees of gunshot wounds and abandoning a recovered Lexus RX 300 jeep with Reg. No. KTU 991 FD.

    Meanwhile, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has placed a N10 million bounty on the killers of two policemen in Enugu State, Friday night, saying the state would go after the culprits with every resource at its disposal to bring the killers to book.

    Mbah pledged the reward while briefing newsmen after a State Security Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu on Saturday.

    The meeting also had in attendance, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu; State Director, State Security Services, Theresa Egbunu; Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Brigadier General Murtala Abu; and the State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Peter Ogar, among others.

    On the possible culprits, Mbah said available security information pointed to men of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, who came in several SUVs, among them a black Lexus SUV.

    He, therefore, called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the criminals and the exhibits and report the same to security agencies.

     “We have also placed a bounty of N10 million as a reward to anyone, who would have any useful information that will lead to the arrest of these criminals. So, I enjoin members of the public to, please, come forward, or call the police and other security agencies with any useful information that could lead to the arrest of these criminals.

    “We do not have room to accommodate these people, these vagabonds, and these miscreants in our state. We are going to do everything necessary to ensure that the ultimate sacrifice made by our valiant policemen does not go in vain.

    “Our condolences go to the bereaved families. I will also ensure that as a government, we are going to provide the necessary support to the bereaved families,” the governor said.

    Enugu state police command on Sunday, April 14, said that its operatives serving in Central Police Station (CPS), Enugu, have rescued a female abducted victim (names withheld) in the state.

    The command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Sunday, said the victim was kidnapped on April 9, 2024, at about 7:30 p.m.

    Ndukwe also disclosed that the police equally arrested the victim’s alleged abductors, one Ejike Okorie “m”, aged 26, and Christopher Kindness “m”, aged 25, both of Ameke Ngwo, Enugu North LGA.

    He added that an angry mob had earlier intercepted the suspects before the police swift intervention, beat them up, and set ablaze their criminal operational minibus at the P-and-T bus stop, Okpara Avenue, after an alarm was raised over the victim’s abduction.

    “A preliminary investigation has shown that the suspects confessed to the crime. They stated how they and others at large have been perpetrating the criminal acts of “one-chance” robbery, abduction, and fraudulently obtaining money and other belongings from unsuspecting victims within Enugu metropolis.

    “The suspects will be arraigned in court and prosecuted once investigations are concluded”, Ndukwe declared.

    Meanwhile, the state commissioner of police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has commended the operatives for their quick intervention, thereby preventing the angry mob from murdering the suspects in the name of jungle justice.

    He, however, urged citizens to always adhere to the laws by arresting and handing criminal suspects over to the Police, for necessary investigation and prosecution, instead of resorting to self-help in the form of the criminal act of jungle justice.

  • Irate mob kills man after he hacked mother to death in Enugu – Police

    The Police Command in Enugu State is now investigating the circumstance surrounding the killing of a man by a mob after he allegedly hacked his mother to death.

    The man was said to have been killed by the mob at Isiagu Ibagwa community in Igboeze South Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

    The state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO, SP Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the development.

    Amaraizu said : “Tragedy had allegedly struck at Isiagu Ibagwa community when a son identified as Ifesinachi Ukwueze allegedly murdered his mother identified as Beatrice Ukwueze with a cutlass over a yet to be established issue.

    “It was further gathered that the action of Ifesinachi Ukwueze allegedly angered irate mob who descended heavily on him and left him lifeless before the arrival of security operatives,’’ he said.

    The police spokesman added that the dead bodies of the son and mother had been deposited in a nearby mortuary “while police operatives have commenced a full scale investigation into the incident.

  • Police arrest three suspects over killing of 105-yr-old man

    The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged killing of a105-year-old man, Chief Eze Nwah-Onuh, in Igboeze North Local Government Area of the state.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria  in Enugu on Friday.

    Amarizu gave the names of the suspects as Onyeka Abugu, 22; Ogbonna Eze, 22 and Nnamdi Eze, 19 and said they were already helping the command in its investigation.

    Nwa-Onu of Ekposhi Umuidoko village in Ogurute community was allegedly strangled on Aug. 9.

    The spokesman said the body of the deceased had been deposited in a hospital mortuary.

    “The command through its operatives of the state’s Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID) has commenced investigations into the alleged killing of Chief Eze Nwah-Onuh of Ekposhi Umuidoko village of Ogurute community.

    “It was gathered that on that fateful day the alleged suspects conspired and strangled the deceased over a yet-to-be established issue or issues and escaped.

    “But through intelligence information, the suspects were promptly nabbed,’’ he said.

    The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected electricity transformer cable vandal, who has been operating for months within Enugu metropolis.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said on Friday in Enugu that the suspect, one Chizoba Akam, was specialized in the vandalism of electricity transformer and selling its cables and parts to his cohorts.

    Amaraizu noted that the suspect was nabbed by police operatives of the Trans Ekulu Division of the command on July 24 at about 5:30 a.m.

    He said that the police recovered vandalized transformer armoured cables and other transformer parts from the suspect.

    “It was gathered that the suspect, Chizoba Akam, who claimed that he is from New Artisan Market, Enugu, was nabbed by police operatives on early morning routine patrol with armoured cables stocked inside a sack bag and with a view to beat security check.

    “It was further gathered that the suspected notorious vandal is an indigene of Igbeagu Town in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

    He said, “the intermediate cables was vandalized from Mrs Obiekwe Sub-station of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) at Ugbene in Enugu East LGA.’’

    The police spokesman noted that the command’s Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (CIID) had commenced investigation of the matter.

    Man killed for ‘stealing’ yam in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigation into the alleged killing of a man who was accused of stealing a tuber of yam in Amorji Nike community, Enugu East local government area of the state.

    The command’s spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Saturday that the incident happened on October 4.

    “It was gathered that a man whose identity is yet to be established was allegedly beaten to death on October 4 at Amorji Nike, Enugu, for stealing a yam tuber.

    “His corpse was dumped in a compound from where it was recovered,’’ Amaraizu said.

    According to him, investigations have commenced, while two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

    “The arrested suspects are currently helping police operatives in their investigations,’’ the police spokesman added.
