    Herbalist in police net over fatal concoction

    The Enugu Police Command has arrested a herbalist, Adekunle Oseni, who allegedly prepared a concoction for the detection and arrest of thieves, which allegedly killed a 30-year-old woman.

    Its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement on Saturday  in Enugu, said that the incident took place at Ugbodogwu area of Trans Ekulu in Enugu Metropolis, on Friday, July 28.

    He said that the woman, Ukoro Onyinye, a resident of Ugbodogwu Trans Ekulu, had taken the concoction which was prepared with a goat heart, to enable her detect and arrest thieves that had persistently broken into her shop.

    “Investigation into the woman’s death revealed that she took some herbal concoctions prepared by Oseni.

    “From our findings, the deceased met the suspect through a neighbour identified as Alesinloye Nuru, after she (deceased) complained of constant raids into her shop.

    “On July 2, the deceased contacted the suspect who, after listening to her complaint, prepared a concoction which will enable her detect and arrest the thieves.

    “In the early hours of July 28, she (the deceased) started vomiting and was rushed to Colliery Hospital, Enugu where she was confirmed dead,’’ the statement said.

    The PPRO said that the corpse had been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy, while the suspect was helping the police in their investigation.

  • Police arrest two kidnap suspects in Enugu

    The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two suspected kidnappers, who disguised as cattle rearers on the outskirt of Akpugo community near Enugu.

    The command’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said on Saturday that the suspects were arrested after a gun duel on April 11.

    “The feat was achieved by a painstaking operation after the police received information on the hideout of the criminals in a thick bush outside the community,” the police spokesman said.

    Amaraizu said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were from Kaduna and Bauchi States.

    He added: “It was gathered that suspects had allegedly at gun point, abducted one Mr. Amobi Chibuoke, a passenger and a driver Mr. Johnson Agah on March 18 and demanded for N10 million ransom which was later reduced to N4 million.”

    The police spokesman said the victims were abducted on Amagunze-Ezza Road while returning from a traditional marriage in Ezza Agu in Ebonyi.

    Amaraizu said the victims revealed that they were fed with rice once daily and blindfolded throughout their stay with the abductors.

    “Meanwhile a full scale investigation has commenced into the incident as the suspects, with bullet wounds, are receiving medical attention to enable them recover quickly,’’ he said.

  • Police confirm death of notorious robbery suspect

    The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the death of a notorious armed robbery suspect, Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who operated in Enugu and Abakaliki, after a gun duel.

    The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the death via a statement on Thursday.

    Amaraizu said the robbery suspect had served prison terms in Enugu and Abakaliki in recent time.

    “In the morning of March 28 and through intelligence information, the armed robbery kingpin, Chukwuemeka Ugwu, alias Akpuike, was trailed by police anti-robbery squad to his criminal hideout at Aguowa axis of Trans-Ekulu in Enugu,“ the police spokesman said.

    He said the gun duel ensued between the suspect, his boys and the police anti-robbery squad when he sighted the police operatives.

    Ugwu said the suspect was overpowered by the superior fire power of the police, who had laid siege for him in a carefully coordinated operation.

    “The superior fire power of the police operatives resulted caused armed robbery kingpin to sustain serious injuries.

    “The suspect was promptly rushed to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku/Ozala for medical attention, “the police spokesman said.

    He said the doctor on duty later confirmed him dead.
