State ready to host 2025 Gaming Conference

The Enugu State government has said it is taking a leap from obscurity to the forefront of conversations in the gaming sector in Nigeria.

This followed intentional actions taken by the Enugu State Gaming Commission in the last 18 months in line with Governor Peter Mbah’s directives.

Executive Secretary/CEO, Enugu State Gaming Commission, Prince Arinze Arum, who confirmed this at a press conference to herald the commencement of activities leading up to the 2025 Enugu Gaming Conference.

According to Arum, the 2025 conference, themed, ‘From Unification to Diversification: Shaping Nigeria’s Gaming Future,’ would be held on July 30 and 31, 2025, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.

Reviewing developments since the first edition of the conference last year, the Executive Secretary/CEO said: “Our aim of putting together this conference last year was to start the conversation that Enugu is a viable market for gaming, while we also joined in the discussions around gaming, promoting responsible gaming and all that. And we achieved quite remarkable success in that regard, for the fact that Enugu is now a very fast growing gaming market. And investors are inquiring, coming in, we know a number of licences that we’ve issued out. A lot of operators are coming into Enugu and they are identifying the potentials we have here.

“You know there is a nexus between gaming, entertainment and tourism, so we tried to highlight that in the last edition, and as our tourism potential is being harnessed, our tourism sector is witnessing growth, gaming also growing.

“Lagos is mainly the big market when it comes to Nigeria. Our ambition is to take Enugu to that level of market that Lagos enjoys, and we are on track to do that because where we are, today, in terms of the market activity, if you do a market analysis last year and this year, you will understand that we’ve taken quite a leap from obscurity to the forefront of the conversation once gaming is mentioned in Nigeria.”

He said that this year’s edition theme reflects not only the current trajectory of the gaming sector in Nigeria, but also the bold and necessary conversations the sector must have in response to the growing diversity of players, regulators, technologies and jurisdictional realities that characterise the industry today.

He said: “As we all know, the Nigerian gaming landscape is undergoing rapid transformation. From the once monolithic structure of centralised regulation, we are now witnessing a shift towards state-led frameworks, technological adoption and deeper socio-economic implications. This diversification, though challenging, offers a unique opportunity for innovation, inclusion and growth, particularly when guided by collaboration and shared values.

“The Enugu Gaming Conference 2025 aims to bring together regulators, operators, technology providers, legal experts, financial institutions and public interest groups from across Nigeria and beyond. Our collective goal is to create a platform for open dialogue, policy harmonisation and the advancement of responsible gaming practices.”

He gave key highlights of the two-day event to include: Panel sessions featuring thought leaders and top executives from across the gaming value chain; exhibitions showcasing emerging technologies and regulatory solutions; formal unveiling of the commission’s Good Cause Projects in line with global best practices; strategic roundtables with government agencies, investors, and civil society and targeted networking opportunities for startups, innovators and operators seeking expansion into the South East market.

While expressing the commitment of the commission to its role as a progressive and proactive regulator , who believes that fostering a well-structured, transparent and socially responsible gaming environment was essential to driving sustainable development within the sector and unlocking its full economic potential, Arum, appreciated their partners, Events Arcade Solutions Limited, co-organisers and other media and corporate sponsors that had continuously supported them since inception.

He assured that the conference would be more than just a gathering as it would be a catalyst for reform, innovation and partnership.

The Managing Director of Hymac Real Limited, Okey Ayogu, has commended the Enugu State governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, for creating an enabling investment climate in the state.

Ayogu gave the commendation after an Enugu State High Court sitting in Enugu resolved a protracted litigation over a parcel of land, Plot P/23C, Independence Layout, Enugu, measuring over 6000 square meters in the state capital in the company’s favour.

The court, presided over by Justice C. O. Ajah, in a Suit No. E/658/2021 in the matter between Hymac Real Limited and NSE Enugu State branch, NULGE Enugu State Branch and Barr. Okey Ezugwu, declared that Hymac Real Limited was validly granted Plot P/23C, Independence Layout Enugu by the state government and went ahead to award N5 million cost in favour of the company.

Speaking with newsmen after the court session,  Ayogu expressed gratitude to the judiciary, describing the courts as truly the last hope of the common man.

While attributing the judgement to Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s commitment to ensuring that Enugu remains an investment haven, he said  the judgement had boosted his confidence to do business in Enugu without losing the property to fear land racketeers.

He said, “My special thanks go to the governor of Enugu State, who has decided to ensure that Enugu would be a favourable destination for investors without a godfather. I say this because my case was that of an investor who decided to come back home to invest. But the powers that be at home insisted it could not happen because I’m not a known person. And the governor insisted that the government and those in government must not throw their weight around to stop people from doing legitimate businesses in the state.

“It is that unbiased and impartial justice-seeking mood of the government that gave the judge the liberty to do the right thing.

“For over three years, the judiciary was being muscled against doing the right thing in this matter.

“Governor Mbah has demonstrated that he’s an investment-driven and investment-friendly governor, and I can rightly say that Enugu State should be the destination of every investor in Nigeria.”

  • Transforming Education: Enugu’s disruptive model

    Transforming Education: Enugu’s disruptive model

    • By. John Bankole

Imagine a future where every child, regardless of background, has access to a world-class education—one that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and technical expertise from an early age. Picture classrooms equipped with digital whiteboards, students engaging with Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, and an education system seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technology with practical skills. This is not a distant dream but a tangible reality taking shape in Enugu State, Nigeria.

Nigeria’s education sector has faced persistent challenges for decades—insufficient funding, outdated curricula, and a disconnection from modern technological advancements. These limitations have stifled progress, leaving generations of students ill-equipped for the rapidly evolving global economy. However, a radical transformation is underway in Enugu, led by Governor Peter Mbah’s visionary leadership. The goal is clear: to position Enugu as Africa’s leading hub for human capabilities, producing a generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers who will drive economic and technological progress.

This transformation is anchored on three strategic pillars—experiential and future-oriented learning, inclusive and equitable education, and strengthening technical, vocational, and higher education. By reimagining the role of education and making unprecedented investments in learning infrastructure and curriculum development, Enugu is pioneering a model that other states and nations can emulate. In this new era, education is not just about acquiring knowledge but about building competencies that empower students to thrive in a dynamic world.

Traditional Nigerian education has relied heavily on rote memorisation, leaving students ill-prepared for the demands of an evolving world. Enugu State is shifting towards Experiential Learning, where students gain knowledge through practical applications rather than passive listening.

To achieve this, the state will integrate cutting-edge technologies into the curriculum: Interactive Digital Whiteboards and Tablets to create engaging, interactive lessons; Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics to teach problem-solving and innovation; Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) to provide immersive learning experiences; and the Internet of Things (IoT) to introduce students to smart technologies.

A 2023 report by the World Economic Forum states that “65% of children entering primary school today will work in job roles that do not yet exist.” Enugu’s forward-thinking approach ensures that its students will not only be ready for these jobs but will pioneer them.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is at the heart of this reform, ensuring that students are not just consumers of technology but creators, innovators, and future leaders in the global digital economy. In the words of Governor Mbah, “Our children will not just use technology; they will build it, shape it, and lead the world with it.” A key component of this transformation is ensuring that every child in Enugu State has access to quality education, regardless of socio-economic background.

The government addresses this challenge by constructing 260 Smart Green Schools, one in each ward, to ensure widespread access to modern education facilities. The Smart Green Schools project is a radical rethinking of primary and secondary education in Enugu. Each school will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including interactive classrooms, digital labs, AI-driven learning tools, and a curriculum designed for the 21st century, focusing on skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and technological proficiency. The pilot school in Owo, Nkanu East LGA, is already operational, with many more under construction. The government has committed to completing all 260 schools by September 2025.

The government is introducing Early Childhood Education (ECE), which focuses on social skills, cognitive development, and problem-solving from as early as three years old, provides special accommodations for children with disabilities, and ensures inclusivity. This initiative will ensure that every child receives a world-class education from age three onwards, preparing them for success in an increasingly technology-driven world. According to a McKinsey report on education, “Students who engage in digital and experiential learning from an early age show a 45% improvement in problem-solving skills compared to traditional methods.”

These measures ensure that education in Enugu is not just a privilege but a right, setting a precedent for other states. A 2022 UNICEF report states, “Nigeria has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children in the world, with over 10.5 million not receiving formal education.” Enugu’s investment aims to change this narrative, ensuring no child is left behind, especially in Enugu.

A significant flaw in Nigeria’s education system is that it is disconnected from industry needs. Many graduates are unemployed due to a mismatch between their skills and market demands. Enugu’s model seeks to bridge this gap by prioritising Science, Technical, and Vocational Education (STVE). Many students will transition to STVE institutions after graduation from Smart Green Schools. Eight new Technical and Vocational Schools (one per Federal Constituency) are under construction, ensuring that students interested in practical skills training have access to top-tier facilities. The Government Technical College (GTC), Enugu, is being revitalised as the flagship institution for technical education.

Other key initiatives include building eight specialised STVE schools, one per Federal Constituency, offering training in fields such as Industrial Technology & Engineering, Software Development & Information Technology, Building & Fabrication Engineering, and Industrial Agriculture. Upgrading tertiary institutions to incorporate experiential learning methodologies, including Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT). Ensuring ESUT’s programmes are accredited, with 97% of courses now officially recognised, thanks to increased government investment. Clearing salary arrears and releasing long-stalled promotions, motivating educators to deliver higher-quality instruction.

These technical institutions will not just train students but forge direct partnerships with industries, ensuring that graduates are ready to enter the workforce immediately upon completing their programmes. By focusing on skills that are in high demand, Enugu is reducing unemployment and creating a pipeline of skilled workers who can compete globally.

According to a recent National Bureau of Statistics study, Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate stood at 42.5% in 2023. Enugu’s focus on vocational training is expected to significantly reduce this figure, as skilled graduates will be job-ready upon completion of their programmes. Through initiatives such as industrial attachments and collaborative research with industry players, students will graduate with practical experience and marketable skills, significantly enhancing their employability.

Perhaps the most groundbreaking aspect of this transformation is the unparalleled financial commitment by the Enugu State Government. In 2024, the administration allocated N134.9 billion to education, 33% of the total budget, surpassing the UNESCO benchmark of 15-20%. This trend continued in 2025, with education receiving N320.6 billion (33.2% of the budget), making it one of the highest investments in education in Africa’s recent history.

This financial commitment extends beyond mere infrastructure; it ensures teachers receive competitive salaries, training, and incentives to deliver world-class education. Additionally, bursaries and scholarships are provided to high-achieving students and those from underprivileged backgrounds, removing financial barriers to education.

The significance of this is obvious. Education funding in Nigeria has been lip service for decades, with insufficient allocations hampering development. By making education the top budgetary priority, Governor Mbah is proving that transformational change is not just a vision but a well-funded reality. Enugu is fostering a generation of self-reliant, employable graduates capable of driving industrial and technological advancement by prioritising practical skills development.

This commitment has not gone unnoticed. The Vanguard Newspaper’s editorial board, in its December 21, 2023 edition, acknowledged Enugu’s revolutionary approach in an article titled “Enugu’s Laudable Education Budget and Abia’s Recurrent Expenditure.” This recognition highlights the national and continental significance of the state’s educational reforms.

Enugu’s Disruptive Education Model is more than just a policy—it is a revolution in the making. If these ambitious initiatives are sustained and expanded, the state will serve as a benchmark for educational transformation across the continent. With an unwavering focus on experiential learning, inclusive access, and technical education, Enugu sets a new standard for what African education can and should be. The world is watching, and Enugu is leading the way.

  • Enugu farm estates: A blueprint for agricultural transformation

Enugu farm estates: A blueprint for agricultural transformation

    • By Jeff Ukachukwu

For centuries, agriculture has been the silent engine of economic growth, sustaining civilisations and shaping the prosperity of nations. Today, Enugu State is embarking on a bold journey to revolutionise its agricultural landscape with the Enugu Farm Estates Programme—a visionary initiative poised to turn rural communities into thriving economic hubs. This is not just about farming; it is about transforming lives, unlocking prosperity, and placing Enugu on the global agricultural map. Imagine a future where every farmer has access to modern technology, every hectare of land yields its full potential, and agriculture is no longer seen as a struggle but a thriving industry. The potential impact of this programme on the local economy is significant, with the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and a substantial increase in agricultural output.

With a strategic blueprint inspired by the success stories of Israel, Brazil, China, and Vietnam, Enugu State is determined to harness its rich agricultural resources to create employment, ensure food security, and drive economic growth. This ambitious strategy aims to increase agricultural output by 2000% within the next decade, positioning Enugu as a model for sustainable agricultural development. Similar models in Israel have increased farm yields by 1,500% through precision agriculture, while Brazil has turned formerly unproductive land into thriving agricultural hubs, contributing over $84 billion annually to its economy. This potential for economic growth is a reason for optimism about the future of Enugu State.

Enugu State embraces a holistic approach to agricultural transformation. The programme is not just about farming but about creating a structured and sustainable ecosystem where agriculture drives economic prosperity. The Enugu Farm Estates Programme is poised to impact the state’s socio-economic landscape by targeting food security, job creation, and rural economic development. Governor Dr. Peter Mbah stated, “We envision an Enugu where agriculture is not just a subsistence activity but a wealth-generating industry, contributing significantly to our $30 billion GDP target.”

The policy for the development of agriculture is a two-pronged approach. The first is supporting large-scale farming through land banks. Investors are allocated land to commence large-scale agriculture. The second is the farm estates. The Farm Estates is for smallholder farmers. While increasing the productivity of smallholder farmers, the government aims to aggregate them and make them produce in a manner that surpasses the productivity of large-scale farmers. This dual strategy—supporting smallholder farmers while creating opportunities for large-scale agribusiness—ensures Enugu’s comprehensive and sustainable agricultural transformation. In Nigeria, states embracing large-scale agribusiness have reported a noticeable increase in agricultural GDP within five years.

Enugu State has positioned itself as a destination for large-scale commercial agriculture. The Enugu State Land Bank, with over 130,000 hectares of land, is available for investors looking to establish large-scale agricultural enterprises. This policy framework attracts agribusiness investments, fosters public-private agricultural partnerships, promotes modern and technology-driven farming practices, and develops value chains for export and food processing.

The Farm Estate Model is built on three key pillars: sustainable agricultural practices that promote environmentally friendly farming techniques and ensure long-term productivity; economic empowerment that creates direct and indirect employment opportunities while increasing farmers’ incomes; and rural security and development that transforms uninhabited and underutilised lands into thriving agricultural hubs contributing to community stability. With these guiding principles, the programme is designed to harness Enugu’s vast agricultural potential and create an inclusive economy where smallholder farmers and large-scale investors can thrive.

The Farm Estates are designed to operate as cluster farms, with each estate covering 200 hectares per ward. Enugu State has 260 wards, resulting in 52,000 hectares of farmland, providing over 104,000 direct jobs and more than 156,000 indirect jobs. This unprecedented scale of development marks a bold step toward repositioning agriculture as a cornerstone of the state’s economy. A similar initiative in Vietnam helped lift over 20 million people out of poverty by transforming its rural agricultural sector through farm clusters and structured support systems.

Each Farm Estate is envisioned not just as a collection of farmlands but a well-planned agricultural community equipped with modern infrastructure, including central warehouses for produce aggregation and processing, tractor sheds to support mechanised farming, resting sheds to enhance farmers’ productivity and comfort, perimeter fencing for security and protection against encroachment, irrigation systems to support year-round farming, and well-constructed access roads to facilitate easy transportation of goods. These features ensure that farming is not just a subsistence activity but a highly organised, profitable, and sustainable venture. Studies show that in regions where mechanised and structured farming is implemented, agricultural productivity increases by up to 300%.

The success of the Enugu Farm Estates hinges on empowering the local farmers who will drive agricultural productivity. Each estate will accommodate 200 farmers from local communities, each allocated 1 hectare of land. To ensure maximum productivity, farmers will receive training and extension services to enhance their knowledge of modern agronomy practices, access to quality inputs such as improved seeds and fertilisers, mechanised support including tractors and other farming equipment, and guaranteed market access through structured offtake arrangements. By eliminating significant challenges such as lack of technical knowledge, poor market access, and inadequate resources, the programme ensures that farmers can focus solely on what they do best—farming. According to agricultural expert Dr Chidi Okafor, “Providing smallholder farmers with structured support and access to mechanised farming can triple their yields and significantly boost local economies.”

One of the significant barriers to agricultural success is the difficulty smallholder farmers face in accessing markets. The Enugu State Marketing Company will play a pivotal role in coordinating the offtake and sale of agro commodities. This structured marketing approach will prevent price fluctuations and market exploitation, provide farmers with a stable and reliable source of income, and encourage increased production by ensuring that produce is bought at fair prices. By removing the uncertainty often accompanying selling agricultural produce, the programme allows farmers to concentrate on improving their output. In Kenya, a similar structured market approach led to a 40% increase in farmers’ earnings within three years. The role of the Enugu State Marketing Company is to reassure farmers and investors about the stability of the market, ensuring fair prices and income stability for farmers.

The Enugu Farm Estate Programme is a collaborative initiative between the state and local governments, demonstrating how strategic public-sector partnerships can drive rural development. The funding structure ensures effective resource mobilisation, with a 60% contribution from the Enugu State Government and a 40% contribution from Local Governments. This joint approach secures funding and ensures accountability and shared responsibility in executing the programme. Similar models in China have shown that government-private partnerships in agriculture can lead to GDP growth of over 8% annually. This collaborative nature of the initiative makes all stakeholders feel included in the process.

Security is a significant concern in many rural areas, hindering economic activities. The Farm Estate Programme tackles insecurity by creating employment opportunities that reduce crime rates among the youth, transforming uninhabited lands into thriving farming communities, and strengthening local economies to make rural areas more attractive for investment and habitation. By addressing the root causes of insecurity—poverty and unemployment—this initiative provides a long-term solution to rural safety and stability. “Where there is economic activity, there is security,” says Chief Security Advisor Nnamdi Eze. “The best way to fight insecurity is to create jobs and ensure communities are economically viable.”

The Enugu Farm Estates Programme is more than just an agricultural initiative; it is a blueprint for economic transformation. The projected outcomes include a significant increase in Enugu’s GDP, with agriculture contributing over 40%, a reduction in rural-urban migration by creating thriving rural economies, achievement of a low poverty rate through job creation and financial inclusion, and a significant leap towards food self-sufficiency and reduced dependency on food imports. Governor Dr Peter Mbah has set a vision for Enugu’s economy to reach a GDP of $30 billion. Agriculture will play a pivotal role in achieving this goal, and the Farm Estates Programme is a critical part of this journey.

The Enugu Farm Estates Programme represents a transformational shift in state practices and perceives agriculture. With the proper support from government agencies, local communities, investors, and development partners, Enugu has the potential to become an agricultural powerhouse, setting a precedent for other states to follow. This initiative is not just about farming but about building a future where prosperity, security, and opportunity thrive in every rural community. The time for action is now, and Enugu State is leading the way.

‘Media critical to fighting immunisation myths, rumours’

Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ES-PHCDA), Dr Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, has urged media practitioners to remain champions of truth, warriors against misinformation and health advocates to ensure no child was lost to preventable disease in Nigeria.

Students and youths in Enugu state on Sunday, July 28, announced that they will not participate in the planned nationwide protest in the country.

The students, who rose from a townhall meeting in Enugu, under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS), Enugu State chapter,  pulled out of the proposed protests, saying it could result in chaos and loss of lives and property as witnessed during the EndSARS protests.

The student body said the decision was in line with its longstanding principles of three C’s: Consultation, Consolidation, and Confrontation, saying, “we must consult and consolidate on our consultation before we confront.”

Presenting their communique after a townhall meeting that lasted over four hours on Sunday, the Chairman of the Enugu State Chapter of NANS, Comrade Prisca Okeke, said the event themed, “The Role of Students in Nation Building and National Stability,” was in response to the declining economic conditions and increasing hardship in the country, stressing, however, that the benefit of the nation’s recent history and prevailing circumstances did not favour a street protest at this time.

They charged the federal government, FG, to take immediate steps to address the challenges of high cost of living and poor welfare, among others, facing the students, staff, and academia.

“While we recognise the right to protest, we are also acutely aware of the potential for societal disruptions that can arise from protests that escalate into violence and unrest.

“The lessons from past civil strife like the EndSARS protests underscore the devastating consequences, including loss of lives, widespread displacement, economic decline, and the erosion of social cohesion.

“In alignment with the National Body of NANS, which has called for a peaceful resolution and demonstrated this through a peaceful march in FCT, the Enugu state students arising from this townhall engagements unanimously resolves not to participate in the proposed nationwide protests.

“The student leaders in Enugu State are deeply empathetic to the prevalent hardship in Nigeria and the outcry of Nigerian citizens. However, in the interest of preserving peace and preventing a repeat of the EndSARS experience, we advocate for alternative means of addressing these  issues.

“We call on the FG to urgently address the widespread hardship by implementing policies that have a direct and positive impact on the lives of citizens. This includes measures to reduce inflation and make essential commodities more affordable.”

Similarly, the Enugu State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria(NYCN), equally resolved not to take part in the protest and sued for peaceful dialogue, enjoining youths of the state to stay away from any protests in the state’s and nation’s interests.

In a communique endorsed by over 50 youth oganisations in the state and read to newsmen by the Chairman of NYCN, Enugu State, Comrade Bartholomew Okoh, said they preferred dialogue to street protest as it could spiral out of control.

“The youth of Enugu State, under the aegis of the NYCN, have chosen a path of dialogue and engagement with both the State and Federal Government, rather than participating in the national protests slated for August 1st to 10.

“This significant decision prioritises constructive conversations as a means to address the array of pressing issues that concern the youth and the broader community.

“While recognising and respecting the right to protest, the youths of Enugu firmly believe that dialogue is in the best interest of the State and country at large. This approach will help to avoid the economic disruptions witnessed during the EndSARS protests, which had far-reaching consequences.

“In light of the above, we strongly urge the FG to promptly address the following pressing issues, namely, security, job creation, affordable food prices, improvement in the quality of education and healthcare, reduction of fuel prices, youth involvement in governance, among other demands,” they stated.
