Troops storm kidnappers hideout, rescue 14 victims in Enugu forest

Troops of Sector 1 of the Joint Task Force Operation UDO KA, a military onslaught against criminals elements in the South East have rescued 14 kidnap victims, following an ‘high-impact” raid on the kidnappers’ den in Orokam Forest linking Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State and Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State.

A credible source at the Army Headquarters told The Nation on Saturday that the operation was triggered by “actionable intelligence” from vigilant community sources.

The source said the victims were abducted on Friday from Ezimo Agu community in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State and Orokam in Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State, but were held by their abductors in dispersed clusters across the forest.

According to the source, upon receiving the relevant intelligence the troops, in collaboration with local vigilantes “swiftly” mounted a deliberate assault on a suspected kidnap hideout concealed deep into the forest.

“On contact, the criminals unleashed gunfire, prompting a fierce engagement,” the source said.

“The joint force’s superior firepower, tactical manoeuvre and relentless advance forced the kidnappers to break contact and flee, abandoning the abductees.”

The source said the troops have handed over the rescued victims to the Divisional Police Officer, Udenu Division, for proper profiling and to reunite them with their families.

UK PACT targets cleaner transport, better air quality in Enugu

The United Kingdom Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) on Thursday unveiled a major national project in Enugu aimed at strengthening private-sector capacity to tackle air pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Nigeria’s transport sector.

The initiative, tagged “Transport Climate Action: Boosting Business Leadership for Clean Air in Nigeria,” is designed to accelerate low-carbon, inclusive economic growth by equipping companies with the tools, skills, and support needed to adopt cleaner technologies and climate-smart business models.

Thursday’s stakeholder engagement held in Enugu brought together key actors across businesses, government, security agencies, regulators, financial institutions, development organisations, and civil society groups.

Speaking during the event, the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, who delivered a goodwill message on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah, said climate challenges confronting Nigeria, and Enugu in particular, demand urgent, private-sector-driven solutions.

He noted that climate change impacts such as erosion, land degradation, and worsening urban air quality were already affecting livelihoods across communities in the state.

Quoting recent data shared by the UK PACT project, Onyia said more than 200,000 Nigerians die prematurely every year due to air pollution, with the transport sector contributing over 15 percent of national greenhouse gas emissions.

“Enugu is not exempt from this reality,” he said, adding, “But within these challenges lie enormous opportunities, opportunities for innovation, new business models, cleaner technologies, and job-creating green industries.”

Onyia said the Enugu State Government had begun reforms in the transport sector, including gradual modernisation of intra-city mobility, and would continue to deepen public-private partnerships to advance climate resilience.

He said the UK PACT project aligns with the state’s development priorities by supporting businesses to access climate finance, understand relevant regulations, develop climate action plans, and adopt emissions-reducing practices in line with Nigeria’s NDC 3.0 targets.

“We see opportunities here for further engagement with our private sector. This event offers us a strategic platform to strengthen partnerships, unlock finance, and shape a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient economic future for Enugu,” he added.

Delivering her remarks virtually, Isabel Hilson, UK PACT Nigeria Lead at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, said the programme is the UK government’s flagship climate-capacity initiative working with countries that have high emissions-reduction potential.

She said the new project falls under the Climate Policy and Governance sector of UK PACT, focusing on transport because of its significant emissions burden and economic importance.

“Transport is a major source of greenhouse gases and air pollution, but it is also a vital enabler of trade and development,” Hilson said.

“We hope to deliver the innovation and investment needed for cleaner transport systems that benefit health, climate, and growth.”

She added that the project would support Nigeria to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement and its long-term low-emissions development strategy.

In his presentation, Dr. Emmanuel Onwodi, Project Lead at Escher Silverman Global (ESG), described rising greenhouse gas emissions as one of Nigeria’s most urgent public health and economic concerns.

According to him, businesses are both contributors and victims of the pollution crisis.

“The transport sector accounts for more than 15 percent of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions but remains ill-equipped to address the issues, limited technical expertise, unclear regulatory pathways, and restricted access to finance for clean technologies,” he noted.

He said the UK PACT intervention would equip private companies with training, policy support, and practical tools to reduce emissions while improving competitiveness.

Gari Haq, Consortium Lead from the University of York and Stockholm Environment Institute, said cleaner transport remains one of the fastest pathways to healthier populations, safer climate conditions, and stronger businesses.

“We all contribute to climate change through our actions, and we are all casualties of these emissions,” he said.

“It is about acting locally while thinking globally. With tight margins and rising costs, clean transport offers a practical route to long-term sustainability.”

Haq explained that the 15-month programme would help businesses access climate finance, participate in voluntary carbon markets, develop finance-ready Climate and Clean Air Action Plans, and understand regulatory frameworks such as the National Climate Change Fund.

He also noted that the project integrates gender equality, disability, and social inclusion principles to ensure equitable climate solutions.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement, Mr. Ibrahim Shelleng, said climate change has become a lived reality across Nigeria, from flooding in coastal cities to extreme heat in the north.

He said the private sector must play a central role in transitioning Nigeria to a cleaner, healthier, and more competitive economy.

“Our industries, SMEs, financiers, and innovators must drive this transition,” he said.

“This platform deepens understanding, builds capacity, and strengthens collaboration. It allows us to explore clean-energy technologies, climate-smart business practices, and access climate finance instruments such as carbon markets and green bonds.”

Also speaking, Dr. Bernard Obika highlighted rising urban migration, worsening air quality, and global agreements such as the Paris Accord as compelling reasons for urgent action.

He said transport emissions remain a major source of pollution-related deaths in Nigeria, reiterating that limiting global warming requires rapid, far-reaching changes driven largely by the private sector.

The project is being implemented by a consortium that includes the University of York/Stockholm Environment Institute, Consulting Engineers Group (CEG), SLOCAT Partnership, ESG, and AP3 Advisory.

Enugu arrests groom, parents, in-laws, others marrying 13-year-old girl

    • ’We married her for our only son’

The Enugu State Government has announced the arrest and detention of the parents of a teenage bride, the parents of the groom, the groom himself and a matchmaker over the controversial underage marriage involving a girl identified as Amarachi in Amufie community, Enugu Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

Commissioner for Gender, Women and Children Affairs, Hon. Ngozi Eni, said the arrests followed the refusal of the parties to honour an invitation from her ministry after videos of the illegal marriage went viral on social media.

Eni said the government was compelled to act when it became clear that the marriage, already consummated, involved a minor (13-year-old) who had neither given consent nor understood the implications of marriage.

“We invited them to the ministry to explain why a child was given out in marriage, but they refused to come. Their refusal suggested complicity, so we initiated their arrest,” she said.

Those now in custody include the groom’s parents and a native doctor, Mrs Patience, who acted as matchmaker.

According to the commissioner, the matchmaker claimed ignorance of the law criminalising child marriage.

Amarachi, now under state protection, told ministry officials she was forced into the union and had never been to school.

The groom’s mother reportedly justified the action on the grounds that her son is an only child, but went silent when confronted with the illegality of marrying off a minor.

Eni said the ministry’s legal team briefed the detained persons on the Child Rights Law, including penalties for early marriage, while senior officials educated them on gender-based violence and the severe health risks associated with early marriage, such as VVF, cervical cancer and psychological trauma.

The commissioner said all suspects had been handed over to security agencies for further investigation, while Amarachi and a two-year-old baby found during the operation, whose mother is yet to be determined, were taken into protective custody.

She assured that the state would rehabilitate and educate Amarachi, adding that the marriage would be formally nullified.

Eni also commended the swift support of the Chairman of Igbo-Eze North LGA, Hon. Ogalla, the constituency’s House of Assembly member and the Chairman of the Enugu State Civil Service Commission in ensuring the successful intervention.

  • Group seeks end to rights abuses in Enugu

Group seeks end to rights abuses in Enugu

A civil society organisation, the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), has petitioned Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State over what it described as widespread violations of citizens’ rights and systemic obstruction of justice at Magistrates’ Courts across the state.

In a letter dated November 14, 2025, and signed by its President, Olu Omotayo, the group alleged that innocent citizens were being unduly remanded, case files deliberately withheld, and court orders abused, resulting in prolonged detentions and financial losses.

The petition centred on two cases- those of Godwin Odey and Yusuf Omotara- which it said typified the “gross denial and frustration of justice” in the state’s lower courts.

CRRAN said Odey, an OND graduate from Benue State, was arrested on September 20, 2025, in Obollo-Afor, Udenu LGA, during a routine police search for the killers of a Catholic priest in the area.

According to the group, Odey had only travelled to Enugu for the traditional wedding of a friend and had never previously visited the state.

During the police stop-and-search, marijuana was allegedly found in the vehicle conveying Odey and his companions.

Unable to pay for bail, he was charged alongside strangers for the murder of Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya and arraigned on September 24 at the Magistrate Court, Enugu, which remanded him in prison custody.

CRRAN said it petitioned the Attorney-General, who formally requested the transfer of the case file for review.

“Shockingly, the file has yet to be transmitted to the Attorney-General’s office,” the group wrote, adding that investigations revealed that several Magistrates’ Courts delay case file transfers for years, especially those outside Enugu metropolis.

The practice, CRRAN said, hampers the Ministry of Justice from performing its statutory duties and results in prolonged detention of innocent persons.

The second case involved Mr. Yusuf Omotara, a POS operator in Ogun State, who was allegedly arrested and detained for nearly a week, from June 26 to June 30, 2023, on the orders of a Senior Magistrate Court in Enugu.

According to CRRAN, Omotara became a victim after some customers transferred N4,995,000 to his POS account and collected cash in return.

Unknown to him, a third party in Enugu filed an ex parte application claiming the funds were mistakenly transferred.

The organisation alleged that with the connivance of a court registrar and a lawyer, the court ordered Omotara’s arrest in Ogun State and authorised the withdrawal of the nearly N5 million from his account, despite him having no connection to the parties in the suit.

CRRAN said petitions to judicial authorities to recover the funds or punish the indicted officials had not yielded results.

The rights group urged Governor Mbah to order immediate reforms in the state’s Magistrates’ Courts, warning that the alleged irregularities undermine citizens’ trust in the justice system.

“Magistrates’ Courts are the closest courts to the people. If abuses at this level go unchecked, the justice system collapses at its foundation,” the petition said.

CRRAN called for urgent government intervention to ensure justice for Odey, Omotara and others who may be victims of similar systemic abuses.

“We demand immediate action to ensure that no innocent citizen suffers for what he knows nothing about,” Omotayo wrote.

The organisation acknowledged the state government’s efforts to strengthen the justice sector but insisted that decisive action was required to eliminate “illegalities and abnormalities” allegedly perpetrated by court officials.

The Enugu State Government and the Ministry of Justice were yet to respond to the petition at the time of filing this report.

  • Ex-Access Bank chief docked in Enugu for alleged $510,000 theft

Ex-Access Bank chief docked in Enugu for alleged $510,000 theft

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a former Head of Operations at Access Bank Plc, Enugu branch, Obinna Nwaobi, before Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court, Enugu, over alleged criminal diversion of $510,000 (N739 million) belonging to a bank customer.

Nwaobi was docked last Thursday, November 13, 2025, on a nine-count charge bordering on forgery and fraudulent diversion of $510,000 from the account of Lantern Gate Nigeria Limited.

One of the counts accused him of inducing Access Bank, on August 8, 2024, to transfer the funds under the false pretense that the customer had authorised the transaction, an offence contrary to Section 1(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006.

Another count alleged that he knowingly forged an Access Bank Domestic Fund Transfer Form “D” dated August 28, 2024, with intent to deceive and cause the bank to act on it as genuine, contrary to the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His counsel, F. C. Obinna, urged the court to grant him bail, relying on a motion supported by an eight-paragraph affidavit.

But EFCC counsel, ACE II Mainforce Adaka Ekwu, opposed the application, citing an 11-paragraph counter-affidavit and arguing that the “weight of evidence” could compel the defendant to abscond.

After hearing both parties, Justice Giwa-Ogunbanjo granted Nwaobi bail in the sum of N250 million with three sureties in like sum.

Two of the sureties must own landed property in Enugu State, with title documents submitted to the court, while the third must be a relative of the defendant and present evidence of three years’ tax payments.

The court also ordered the defendant and his sureties to deposit two passport photographs each, while Nwaobi must surrender his international passport and National Identification Number pending the determination of the case.

He was remanded at the Enugu Custodial Centre until he meets his bail conditions.

The case was adjourned to March 10, 11, and 12, 2026 for trial.

The matter began in September 2024 when Access Bank petitioned the EFCC, reporting unauthorised transfers from Lantern Gate Nigeria Limited’s account allegedly executed by Nwaobi without the customer’s approval.

  • How false rape allegation nearly destroyed Enugu man

How false rape allegation nearly destroyed Enugu man

When a wife accused her husband of defiling their two daughters, the world rushed to condemn him. But behind the viral video was a story of betrayal, broken trust and the danger of social media trials. DAMIAN DURUIHEOMA, reports

When police officers dragged a visibly shaken 29 years old Ozioma Okonkwo into an interrogation room at the State Police Command Headquarters in Enugu, his world was already collapsing. Cameras rolled as the officers subjected him to interrogation. His wife, Chisom, had reported that he raped their two little daughters: aged just two and five and threatening to kill her if she revealed the incident.

In the interrogation room, one of the female officers confronted him sharply: “You defiled your children, your daughters.”

Ozioma froze. His face, captured in the now-viral video, betrayed disbelief more than guilt.

“Me? Defile my children? My own children that I love so much?” he asked, his voice breaking.

“No, no, no. There’s a mistake somewhere. Madam, are you sure Chisom made this report against me? It can’t be my wife,” he said.

But the officers pressed on. He was asked to make a written statement, to either admit or deny. Ozioma refused.

“Before I put anything in writing,” he said firmly, still in handcuffs, “I would like my wife to be here to say it before me, this thing that you people are saying.”

At that moment, the bewildered father had no idea that his words, spoken in agony, would soon echo across social media.

The news spread like wildfire. A man accused of defiling his own daughters. People were too outraged to doubt it. The video of his interrogation, leaked online, drew thousands of comments within hours. Some called him a “monster.” Others demanded jungle justice.

In Emene, Enugu where the family lived around Adoration Junction, opposite Dan-Legal Hotel, residents whispered the story in shock.

But when this reporter visited the address, neighbours feigned ignorance. “We don’t know the man,” one woman said curtly before walking away. Others avoided the conversation entirely.

The stigma of such an accusation, even when false, runs deep.

    Twist in investigation

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the case but initially declined further comment, sayingwas it was already before the court.

However, police sources later revealed that the children were subjected to medical examination and the results shocked everyone.

“The medical tests showed that the children had not been defiled at all,” a police source said.

That discovery prompted detectives to dig deeper, and what they found was even more disturbing.

Investigators reportedly uncovered video clips on Chisom’s phone, showing one of the girls being coached to say “my daddy touched my bum-bum on Saturday.”

In the background, her mother’s voice could be heard prompting her, ensuring the child repeated the rehearsed line correctly. Confronted with the footage, the truth began to unravel.

    Police give official clarification

In an official statement issued on November 13, 2025, titled “Alleged Defilement of Two Children by Their Father: Why Enugu Police Arraigned the Complainant and Children’s Mother Instead of the Accused Father,” the Enugu State Police Command provided detailed findings of its investigation.

According to the statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, detectives discovered that the periods when Chisom Okonkwo claimed her husband assaulted the children were the same times she had travelled alone with all the children to their hometown in Imo State.

The statement also revealed that their seven-year-old son, in two separate handwritten voluntary statements, exonerated his father and disclosed that his mother had coached him and his sisters to falsely accuse their father—a fact further supported by video evidence.

The police noted that Chisom even attempted to withdraw the complaint when she realised that the investigation was turning against her.

Having failed to substantiate her claims, she was charged to court for defamation and giving false information, offences punishable under the Criminal Code of Enugu State. She was granted bail, and the case was adjourned for further hearing.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the detectives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) for what he described as a thorough and impartial investigation. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to fairness, justice and professionalism, warning that anyone who makes false or malicious allegations will be prosecuted accordingly.

    From victim to accused

After confirming Ozioma’s innocence, police released him, and the case flipped. His wife, Chisom, became the accused. She was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Enugu on a two-count charge of defamation of character and giving false information to the police.

The charge sheet obtained by this newspaper read in part:

“That you, Chisom Okonkwo, sometime in the month of August 2024, along Adoration Junction, Emene, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did defame the character of one Okonkwo Ozioma by shouting in public that he defiled your two daughters, which has exposed him to hatred, contempt and ridicule, thereby damaging his reputation…”

The second count accused her of giving false information to detectives, leading to her husband’s arrest, a violation of Section 154(1)(a)&(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004.

For Ozioma, the nightmare was over, at least officially. But the scars of humiliation, betrayal and public disgrace would take much longer to heal.

The human cost of false allegations

False rape allegations are rare, but their impact is devastating. Under Nigerian law, filing a false police report or giving false testimony is a criminal offence punishable by years in prison.

Legal experts say the consequences extend beyond the courtroom. A wrongfully accused person can lose reputation, family and livelihood, even if later cleared.

In Ozioma’s case, his name became synonymous with one of the most heinous crimes imaginable. For weeks, his image circulated online with captions branding him a “beast.”

    Activists react: It’s wake-up call

Human rights lawyer and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) advocate, Barr. Nnenna Anozie, said the incident reflects growing dangers of online mob justice and weak investigative processes.

“This case should be a wake-up call,” she told this newspaper. “Social media trial is dangerous and has ruined many innocent lives.”

Anozie said that while cases of sexual violence are serious and deserve thorough investigation, the speed with which allegations are broadcast online often leads to irreversible harm, even before evidence is examined.

“Our people are quick to shout, ‘Stone him!’ the moment an accusation comes up,” she added. “That’s jungle justice. We must learn to verify before we crucify.”

    Lessons for law enforcement

Anozie also questioned how the police initially handled the case.

“If the security agencies had done thorough investigation from the start, it wouldn’t have escalated this way,” she argued.

“The system must be cautious about sensitive matters like SGBV. Every claim must be verified through medical and forensic means before arrests are made or the accused is paraded publicly.”

She believes the police must adopt a new standard operating procedure, which is quiet, confidential, and evidence-based, especially for sexual offences.

“It’s not everything reported to you that should be taken hook, line and sinker,” she said. “Private verification should come first before alerting the public. That will help stop media trials and jungle justice.”

    A lesson for society

Beyond law enforcement, the Okonkwo case exposes a deeper social issue: the unchecked power of social media in shaping public opinion.

In a digital age where outrage spreads faster than truth, reputations can be destroyed in hours. Few users pause to verify facts before joining the online mob.

As Barr. Anozie noted, “We’ve leveraged social media for awareness, but without checks. It’s causing more harm than good.”

Her hope is that the case becomes a turning point, a lesson for citizens, media practitioners, and security agencies alike.

‘Before I put anything in writing…’

Perhaps the most haunting image of this entire saga remains that viral interrogation video, where an innocent man, confused and broken, begged for the truth.

“Before I put anything in writing, I want my wife to be here to say it before me,” he said.

For many who have since watched that clip again, his words now carry a different weight, not of denial, but of faith betrayed.
