The power distribution firm made the donation at Oraifite, Anambra State.

The benefiting schools were made up of 3 tertiary institutions and 6 secondary schools from each of the states, and were nominated by their respective state governments.

In his welcome address, the Coordinator, SEOF, Hon. Tony Obi, commended the effort of EEDC in partnering the Foundation to drive its objective towards the development of the education sector, which the Foundation has been involved in across the country over the years.

He said that the gesture by EEDC is worthwhile to the society and for posterity.

Obi stressed that the books and other educational materials that were donated must be used for the purpose it was meant for.

He went on to charge the benefiting schools to ensure that their libraries are functional, as their monitoring team would be paying unscheduled visit to the schools to monitor and ascertain how well the books are being used.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, EEDC, Mr. Robert Dickerman while delivering his address said that the gesture is in line with EEDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy of contributing towards the development of its host community.

“We know the importance of education, we have an obligation and responsibility to our communities, our business is not just to provide electricity, our job is to help and support the communities which we are a part of”, he explained.

He went on to say that, “education is a part of the core of the development of any society; we are very honoured to be part of this donation and we committed to take active role in the education development of the 5 states in which we are community member”.

Dickerman said that besides lighting up homes, companies and industries, we can also light up minds; “this, the company is doing through partnering Sir Emeka Offor Foundation. “

“We believe that the things we are trying to do and the thoughts we have towards supporting social programmes under our CSR initiatives will be best served by partnering with such a foundation. • Mbaka: People want to put me at loggerheads with president

Mbaka: People want to put me at loggerheads with president

Enugu Catholic Priest, the Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, said Thursday that some Nigerians were trying to cause disaffection between him and the presidency.

Mbaka said contrary to earlier media reports that he made negative predictions concerning the President’s ill health, he merely alluded to the reported claims by doctors.

He said Nigerian doctors had expressed fears over the chances of President Muhammadu Buhari recovering from his illness.‎ But, according to him, he prayed against that.

The priest, who is in charge of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria, spoke through his media Chief, Barr Ike Maximus Ugwuoke.

According to him, “‎our attention has been drawn to a report in a section of the media alleging that Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria said that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has slim chances of surviving from his ill health.

“The true fact is that there were media reports, making fuss about Mr President’s health and insinuating Mr President‘s slim chances of recovering from his ill health, published immediately the president went on vacation.

“Fr Mbaka referring to the said media report during his prayers for the sick in the ministry prayed with the worshippers of the ministry for Mr President’s healing and health after which there were lots of testimonies from the sick that were healed of blindness, elephantiasis, deafness, cancer, tumor and all other diverse healings at the end of the prayer session.”

He quoted Mbaka as saying: “They say the sickness is E.N.T.  When it affects, the ear, it affects the nose and affects the neck. We pray for our President and any one that is suffering such a dangerous disease.

“We lift our healing hands for divine healing upon our president. Wherever he is, may he be healed in Jesus name.

“The doctors in Nigeria are nursing fear that he may not survive but we have a healing God.  His name is specialist in impossibilities.”

He added that some ‎persons were nose-diving in the affairs of the ministry with a view to causing unnecessary rift between the ministry and the presidency.

  • UNN shuts Enugu campus over violence

The Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has been shut, following a students’ protest against blackout in their hostels. JAMES OJO (300-Level Mass Communication) and PEACE ONUBULEZE (200-Level Law) report.

It all started as a peaceful demonstration before it ended in violence. Students at the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) went wild during a protest against epileptic power supply on the campus. The protest became violent and  some school properties were destroyed.

The protest was led by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) leadership. The students earlier held a congress during which representatives of each arm of the union and Council of Hall Governors, faculty presidents, and class representatives met to discuss the challenge.

The students were angry about the blackout on the campus, saying the situation prevented them from carrying out their academic assignment. There were also complaints about lack of basic services, such as water supply and Internet. After the congress, the students’ grievances were forwarded to management in a letter titled: “Enugu Campus Students’ Demands”.

The letter listed the students’ key demands  and served management a seven-day warning strike notice.

The students’ union declared “sit-in-the-hostel” strike, which paralysed activities on the campus. To ensure compliance, the union locked all lecture halls and barred commercial bus plying the campus from operating from 8am to noon.

The students vowed not to go for lectures until their conditions were met. Their  action came at the time the school was preparing for examination.

The union president, Chukwuebuka Nwankwo, said there was need for the management to address the situation with a sense of urgency. Chukwuebuka, a 300-Level Accountancy student, said the strike was to prevent  “extreme response” from students.

After four days into the strike, the union leaders met with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Smart Uchegbu, who promised “prompt action”. The students also held another meeting with representatives of the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Benjamin Ozumba.

The union leaders held another congress to intimate their colleagues with the outcome of their meeting with the management. At the congress, students wanted the strike to continue until their grievances were addressed.

On Monday, students held another demonstration, blocking the school gate. They carried placards with the following inscriptions: “Let there be light” and “Doctor’s cannot save lives without light”, among others. The protesters were restricted to the school entrance by security operatives.

As the demonstration was going on, the union leaders were holding a meeting with the representatives of the school management led by the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Okeke Olisa.

The school, again, promised to do its best to restore electricity in the students’ hostel. The management ordered the union to open the locked classrooms for lectures to start. Olisa said the school would also procure 1,500 KVa generator to complement and increase electricity supply to the hostel to two hours 30 minutes. A decision the union leaders rejected.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that electricity was restored at night as promised by the management but the boys’ hostels were excluded. This led to another demonstration as the angry boys made bonfire in the school, before they went wild. They destroyed properties belonging to the school, including louvers of the Main Hall and ICT centre, streetlights, and statute of Eudoral Ibiam.

The students also smashed louvers in female hostels.

The violence led to the closure of the school, with the  VC ordering  all students to vacate the campus, while also announcing the proscription of unionism indefinitely.

None of the students’ leaders were available for comment, but female students criticised their colleagues for the destruction of the school property.
