Oliseh rues Enyeama’s withdrawal from Tanzania tie

Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh , has admitted the late withdrawal of skipper Vincent Enyeama from Saturday’s African Nations Cup qualifier in Tanzania has put him “in a tight corner.”

Lille goalkeeper Enyeama has apparently pulled out of the match after he rowed with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over his comments regarding the safety of Kaduna for June AFCON qualifier against Chad, africanFootball.com reports.

“The late withdrawal has put me in a tight concern,”africanFootball.com quoted Oliseh as saying at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

“He asked to be withdrawn from the team. And the reason for that I don’t know, I think it’s best you ask the player.”

In Enyeama’s absence, Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is now expected to make his Eagles debut in Dar es Salaam on Saturday afternoon.

Ikeme said he will hope to reproduce for Nigeria the form he has displayed at his English Championship club.

“I will just try and do what I do in my club,” he assured.

“I will not be under pressure but I will give my best. I am not going to try and be Vincent (Enyeama), but I will just try and play my own game and give my best.”

Enyeama ‘outstanding’ for Lille against Monaco

Vincent Enyeama underlined his position as one of world’s best goalkeepers with a fine performance as Lille OSC held AS Monaco to a 0-0 draw in  France on Friday.

The 33-year-old was in supreme form at Stade Louis II as he produced top class saves to deny the Principality club what would have been a deserved victory, supersport.com reports.

The highlight of the Super Eagles captain’s performance came in the second half when he dived spectacularly to beat out Ricardo Carvalho’s goal-bound effort in the 76th minute.

Enyeama has not missed a Ligue 1 match for Lille since he returned from his loan spell from Israeli club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, in 2013.

Lille boasts of one point from the opening two matches in Ligue 1 following last weekend 0-1 defeat at home to champions, PSG.

    •Keeper pardoned

Vincent Enyeama will continue as captain of the Super Eagles after his disciplinary issue was ‘dealt with administratively’, the Nigeria Football Federation have confirmed.

There were initial concerns that the NFF had planned to strip Enyeama of his role as skipper of the team, after he was queried by the Glass House for making ‘unguarded comments’ about the choice of Kaduna for last month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad. Nigeria won the game 2-0.

But chairman of the NFF Disciplinary Committee, Christopher Green has posited that the issue has been settled without Enyeama being fined and he will continue as the Super Eagles captain.

“He is the captain of the Super Eagles and will continue as such,” Green said.

“He is eligible to play any day any time because he does not owe us anything. The matter has been dealt with and he’s not being fined.

“The issue has been dealt with administratively and I can tell you that there is no problem and everything has been settled and of course he has been forgiven,” Green added.

Enyeama had voiced concerns over the security situation in Kaduna prior to their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad in June, but went on to keep a clean sheet in the game.

The NFF however thought it necessary to ‘discipline’ the most capped Nigeria international for making what they described as ‘unguarded comments’, a development which drew so much criticism from Nigerians.

  • Oliseh to hold talks with Enyeama

Oliseh to hold talks with Enyeama

Nigeria head coach, Sunday Oliseh will hold talks with goalkeeper and captain, Vincent Enyeama following the furore generated after the Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Chad in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nation’s (Afcon) qualifier in June.

Enyeama found himself in hot water after criticising the choice of Kaduna as venue for the game against Chad’s Les Sao.

The Super Eagles’ captain was subsequently issued a query by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) before being subsequently summoned to appear before the federations’ appeals/disciplinary committee.

Enyeama did not attend the hearing and it is now been speculated that the Lille OSC man may have played his last game for the three-time African champions following his decision to snub the NFF chiefs.

Oliseh says he rates Enyeama high and had revealed that he will be speaking to the experienced shot-stopper whom he described as one of the best on the continent.

“This is a touchy issue and one has to be careful how he treads on this.

“The first thing to do is to hear both sides (of the story). I have already spoken to officials of the federation (NFF) and they provided some very tangible reasons for the steps they took.

“However, when Enyeama made that statement, he was and is still the captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

“You cannot forbid the captain from speaking out; it becomes autocratic if you do that and I would not want to do that as a coach.

“But at the same time, we can also caution him and say ‘we don’t want such kinds of utterances because it may bring about a negative effect on the team’.

“I, however, think that he may have spoken out because of what he had already discussed with his teammates.

“Maybe he spoke out on behalf of his teammates and I don’t think we should stop someone from speaking out when he’s the

    captain.

“However, we cannot have all the players speaking out because that would be tantamount to chaos.

“I will speak to the captain and we will look at the way forward because I still view him as one of the best goalkeepers we have,” Oliseh exclusively told SuperSport TV.

Oliseh also moved to clarify the statements he made regarding the conditions for selection of players into the national team.

The former Juventus midfielder had stated during his first press conference that only players who play for clubs in the top flight of the respective leagues their sides compete in, would get a look in the national team.

“We are trying to have our players to play at a certain standard.

“You can polish players at the national team but you cannot make them. That is what the clubs can do for (the national team).

“To save us time, it is easier to get players who are playing in the first division.

“These players are used to playing at a certain tempo and with certain demands (required of them).

“That would help us get to a certain standard.

“I was also clear about a certain exception; if we have players coming through the lower ranks, like the U20s and the U21s, that rule does not apply to them.

“This is because I know that such players may not be the finished product but will have the potential,” he said.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and one-time Nigeria league top scorer Akarandut Orok were among the fans and dignitaries who watched hometown club Akwa United beat Rangers at the Nest of Champions in Uyo on Sunday.

Akwa United won 2-0 for their first win at the brand-new Nest of Champions.

Interestingly, the duo featured for Akwa United in the past before they moved abroad.

Enyeama now plays for Lille in France, while Orok is with Bahrain club Al Hidd.

Another Eagles star, Ogenyi Onazi, was in the stands to watch Lobi Stars play in Makurdi recently.

    Oliseh: NFF shouldn’t query Enyeama

Former Nigeria captain, Sunday Oliseh, has frowned at the manner with which his country’s football governing body is handling the issue involving goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) this week summoned the Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper before a disciplinary committee for what it described as “unguard comments” to the media over its choice of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna for their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Chad earlier this month.

Enyeama did not turn up before the committee on the claims that he did not receive any official notification of such and did not respond to an earlier query given by the NFF. Reports in Nigeria now suggest that the LOSC Lille Metropole goalkeeper could be sanctioned.

But Oliseh is of the view that Enyeama should be treated as a professional footballer and not a civil servant under the full employ of the football federation and can be issued a query.

The former Juventus and Borussia Dortmund midfielder believes that Enyeama’s view as captain of the Nigerian men’s national team “should be respected.”

“He is not a civil servant. Why are you querying him?” Oliseh asked in an interview with Brila FM on Friday.

“He is a professional football player, the captain of the team and simply aired his opinion and I think that should be respected.

Oliseh, 40, further said it was wrong to crucify Enyeama, who he regards as “one of the best goalkeeper in the world.”

    Enyeama risks ban

Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Disciplinary Committee, Barrister Christopher Green, has revealed that Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, could be banned from appearing for the national team in future.

The NFF announced on June 20 that Enyeama has been summoned before its disciplinary committee on Tuesday, June 23.

Enyeama was queried by the NFF for comments relating to safety and security in Kaduna, venue of Nigeria’s first 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Chad.

The LOSC Lille goalkeeper failed to reply the query and has now been asked to appear before the disciplinary committee tomorrow.

Speaking exclusively to supersport.com, chairman of the committee, Green has now revealed that failure to appear before the committee could result in a ban, for Enyeama, from turning out for the Super Eagles in future.

“Yes, that (recommending that Enyeama is stopped from playing for Nigeria) is an option but right now, I would rather wait until after the meeting on Tuesday,” he said.

The NFF’s disciplinary committee chief also took the time to address the fine of $5,000 USD slammed on midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi.

Onazi was punished after receiving a straight red card in the game against Chad for scuffling with Les Sao’s Massama Asselmo in the 81st minute.

The SS Lazio man claimed afterwards that he was elbowed by Asselmo but Green was not impressed.

“Would Onazi have done that if he was playing at his club? The truth is some of our players don’t show the required amount of discipline when they play for the national team.

“These things will no longer be condoned because without discipline, nothing positive can be achieved,” he said.

Enyeama begs Nigerians Don’t call us Super Chickens

Super Eagles’ first choice goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has appealed to Nigerians for total support, as he stressed that the team is starting afresh and the task of getting the desired result is a collective responsibility.

He lamented that the tag Super Chickens normally referred to the Super Eagles after a poor outing dampens the morale and confidence of the players.

“All we need Nigerians to understand is that we’re starting a new phase, we want Nigerians to start with us afresh, everything brand new .

“Not the super chickens thing that is bygone. When you call the players super chicken it does not inspire confidence to play. We need to put it behind us and forge ahead. The entire country needs to be one team and go for the kill against opponents not turn on your own,’ the Eagles Captain told www.footballlive.ng.

NFF AXE: Enyeama gets last warning

Sportinglife can reveal exclusively that Super Eagles captian Vincent Enyeama risks being banned from the country’s senior team, if he doesn’t improve on his attitude towards eggheads of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on the team’s policies.

Sportinglife can reveal further that Enyeama has been tacitly given the last warning to be of good conduct while with the team or remain in France to play for his clubside.

Enyeama, Sportinglife scooped was reluctant to play the last international friendly against Uganda until he contacted the Akwa Ibom State governor who confirmed that he had accepted to host the game in Uyo.

Even as the game against Uganda was a milestone for Enyeama, he was prepared to skip it like he did with the second game against South Africa in Neisuit, if the Ugandan game was played outside Uyo.

Curiously, Enyeama, Sportinglife gathered further still had the termerity to ask for match bonus for the drawn game against South Africa which he did not participate. Happily, Enyeama got a tongue lash from the official that he called and was told categorically that he could afford not to play for the country, if his primary concern was to cause rifts in the squad.

Recall that Enyeama was banished from the Eagles by erstwhile Eagles chief coach Samson Siasia for instigating his colleagues not to fly in a purported small aircraft from Nigeria to the United States. Siasia called Enyeama’s bluff when he directed those interested in travelling to enter the bus and head for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport in Abuja.

Shamelessly, Enyeama bid a retreat to his threat and joined the small aircraft to the US.But Siasia had the last laugh by dropping him from the international game and subsequently until his exit as coach.

Determined to call Enyeama’s bluff, NFF chiefs have challenged the coaches to produce new goalkeepers with a tacit warning to use only the home-based goalkeepers for subsequent matches, in a bid to find capable competitors to fight for the goalkeeper’s shirt with Enyeama.

As a fallout to Eneyama’s effontary, it was decided that each player would be given $2,000 as appearance fees for international friendly games with a caveat not to pay match bonuses irrepective of the game’s outcome.

Marc Vivien Foe Award; Enyeama set to retain diadem

Super Eagles captain, and Lille shot stopper, Vincent Enyeama will battle nine other players from Africa in his bid to retain the award for best African player in the French league.

The award introduced in 2009 is named after late Cameroon international midfielder Marc Vivien Foe and is voted for by sport journalists selected by French media RFI and France 24. Foe collapsed and died on June 26, 2003, while Cameroon faced Colombia in the semi-final of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Last year, Enyeama joined a long list of other African players who have won the award but this time around he faces stiff competition from players such as Dede and Andre Ayew of Ghana with the latter considered a top favourite for the award alongside Max Gradel of the Ivory Coast, Aymen Abdennour of Algeria and Clinton N’Jie of league leaders Lyon.
