Two-time Ugandan  champions Vipers SC defeated Enyimba 1-0 in the first leg of the Caf Champions League preliminary round on Friday.

Erisa Sekisambu’s goal in the last 20 minutes was enough for the Ugandan club to take a goal advantage into the second leg in Port Harcourt in a fortnight.

Paul Aigbogun, head coach of two-time African champions, named a startlist and bench without Mfon Udoh with Christian Pyagbara anchoring their attack.

Vipers head coach, George Nsimbe included two of Uganda’s national team players, Kizito Keziron and Sekisambu, among his outfield players with Moses Alitho in goal.

The Ugandans had the first say with some good early spells and Mike Mutyaba almost stole the lead inside the opening 15 minutes but his effort from a free kick missed the target by inches.

It was the turn of Halid Lwaliwa to miss from a volley after a fine build-up in Enyimba’s area.

Then within the space of seconds, the Peoples Elephant created anxious moments for their hosts who had their hearts in their mouths.

Pyagbara did well to evade two of his markers but could not apply the finish.

Enyimba captain Chinedu Udoji watched in agony as his headed attempt was cleared off the line.

Andrew Abalogu was the biggest culprit when he failed to convert Pyagbara’s perfect pass into an empty goal just a minute to the half hour mark.

After the first 45 minutes the Peoples Elephant looked capable of stealing the show at the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium in Kampala.

On the hour mark, Sekisambu spurned the best chance of a cagey second half.

Twelve minutes later, the Ugandan international midfielder made no mistake when he brilliantly fired the ball past Theophilus Afelokhai for the winner.

Aigbogun’s attempt to salvage a draw witnessed the introduction of Stephen Chukwude for Pyagbara in the 85th minute.

Nsimbe’s men held out for the last five minutes and added time to claim a goal victory over their more illustrious opponents.

  • ‘Enyimba not superb at Super 4’

‘Enyimba not superb at Super 4’

Enyimba head coach, Paul Aigbogun says his side were not 100 percent convincing at the just concluded 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super 4 tournament.

The NPFL regular season champions were pegged to the second spot behind winners Akwa United at the conclusion of football hostilities on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The Aba outfit were held to a goalless draw by the home side in the last day clash to end their campaign on eight points, one point behind winners Akwa United.

Aigbogun said the Nigerian champions basically contested the two-legged NPFL Super 4 in Kaduna and Uyo with an entirely new set of players.

“Enyimba performed below par in the just concluded NPFL Super 4 because we played with a completely changed team.

“However, we still achieved our goal of trying out new players and we hope to excel in the league and continental assignments.

“I think it’s still okay as we finished the tournament strongly in second spot with a point separating us from the winners.

“I know it will not be easy managing the quality in our fold, but we will strive to get results, which is quite important,” said the former Warri Wolves coach to supersport.com.

Aigbogun said the key for him at the moment is to win the Caf Champions League preliminary clash against Ugandan side Vipers in Kampala next weekend.

“Right now our attention has shifted towards getting past our Caf Champions League first round opponents,” said Aigbogun.

Enyimba will be the guests of Vipers at the weekend in the first leg clash of the Caf Champions League.

  • Enyimba capture Ibenegbu

    Enyimba capture Ibenegbu

Attacking midfielder, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu on Thursday successfully completed his switch to Nigerian champions, Enyimba.

The Super Eagles midfielder was offered a two-year contract deal at the People’s Elephant.

The former Heartland ace helped Warri Wolves finish second on the log behind Enyimba in the past season and gain the handsome reward of a CAF Champions League ticket.

Ibenegbu said he is excited heading off to Enyimba and promised to bring added value to the side’s quest for laurels on the domestic and continental fronts.

“I have successfully completed my move to Enyimba for a two-year deal so I hope to join them at Uyo on Saturday as they prepare for the CAF Champions League clash against Ugandan side Vipers.

“ I was registered for the CAF Champions League campaign and that’s a huge plus for me. The deal package is satisfactory; that’s why I appended my signature on the contract documents.

“I will give the side 100 per cent of my time just as I have done at past clubs to ensure the club succeeds on the continent and in the domestic league. I will miss the relationship with Wolves players and supporters, but that’s life. There is always time to move on, which is what I have just done,” said the former El Kanemi Warriors playmaker to supersport.com.

Ibenegbu was a key player in the Super Eagles’ futile campaign at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Kigali, Rwanda.

Enyimba to play ACL games in P/Harcourt

Seven-time Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba will play their home fixtures in the 2016 CAF Champions League at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Renovation work continues at pace at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba but it seems increasingly unlikely that the refurbishment will be completed in time for the club’s opening game in the competition on February 28.

Enyimba will face Ugandan club, Vipers SC in the preliminary round of this year’s edition of Africa’s premier club competition with the first leg set to be held on the weekend of February 12 to 14 at the 5 000-seat Bunamwaya Stadium.

“The ongoing rehabilitation work at the Enyimba Stadium is not moving at a very quick pace. It is looking very unlikely that we will play the return fixture (against Vipers) at our own stadium so we have opted for the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt to play that game.

“We have already received clearance from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to that effect,” Farriel Allaputa, spokesman of Enyimba, told supersport.com.

Enyimba are two-time winners of the CAF Champions League.

Kamal scored Enyimba’s only goal against Warri Wolves on Monday and he

has noted that the club would continue to keep doing well in the ongoing Super Four knowing that the tournament is their final preparation for the CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against Vipers of Uganda.

Enyimba aims to get to at least the group stage of the competition and supplant their recent failures in the money spinning club competition.

  • Super Four: Pyagbara predicts Enyimba’s resurgence

Super Four: Pyagbara predicts Enyimba’s resurgence

Enyimba striker,  Christian Pyagbara is confident that the reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Champions will make a bigger statement at the second leg of the NPFL Super Four Tournament billed to start in Uyo on Monday.

The People’s Elephant are placed 2nd after the conclusion of the Kaduna leg of the 2016 Super Four tournament courtesy of their one win, one draw and one loss record at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.

In a chat to www.npfl.ng, the soft-spoken Pyagbara said he expects that the more time spent together by his richly talented team, the better the results they will get.

“We’ve been training hard since the end of the Kaduna tournament and we will always be training hard. You know there are many new players here and I’m sure as we spend time with each other, our results will get better,” said the former Flying Eagles star.

Pyagbara, who joined from relegated Sharks Football Club scored his first goal for Enyimba in their 2-0 win over Warri Wolves in his team’s last match at the Kaduna Super Four. A native of Gokana in Rivers State, the attacker is delighted to have quickly gotten off the ground with his new team and is ready to make contributions to the team’s success.

“I am doing my best to contribute to the success of the team and I am happy to have scored on my second start. It eases the pressure on you as a striker and the coach has told us he would field us based on how we perform during training sessions. So I will continue to give my best to ensure the team performs well,” added Pyagbara.

Having amassed four points from three matches in Kaduna, Pyagbara is fully aware of what the team has to do in Uyo starting from Monday if they hope to be crowned Super Four Champions.

“I strongly believe we have all it takes to win the Super Four at Uyo. All we need to do is to put our heads together, play like a team and help one another. I’m sure that with the quality we have, we will achieve victory,” he said.
