    Enyimba/ Heartland planning reunion match

Heartland and  Enyimba are locked in  discussions over a reunion match. The date and venue have not been fixed.

The Naze Millionaires and  People’s Elephant are neighbours but the rivalry between them has been very fierce with one always not agreeing with the other on the football pitch.

Enyimba would be looking back at last season and what their position could have been had it been they won both games against their illustrious neighbour where they only garnered a point out of possible six.

It is owing to this and other factors that a source close to both clubs confirmed to SportingLife that Heartland and Enyimba will soon play a friendly match which they will tag a reunion affair and that it would be meant to settle their old differences as both clubs want to chart the way forward.

Though no date, time and venue has been fixed, SportingLife  reliably gathered that top officials of both clubs have sanctioned the tie to go ahead.

Enyimba placed second at the end of last season and barely a point off league winners, Kano Pillars while Heartland were in the middle section of the log.

Nigeria’s elite league defending Champion Kano Pillars is ready to take on the other clubs in Africa in the CAF’s Champions League, the Club’s Technical Adviser Okeh Emordi has assured.

The veteran Coach who led Entimba FC to win the African best Club’s Trophy for Nigeria in 2004 showered praises on the Nigeria Football Federation for organising the Super Six for the teams representing Nigeria in the continental competitions.

“I would say a big thank you to the NFF for organizing this competition for us that are campaigning in the African competitions.  The Super Four has helped me a lot to get the new players and old ones to blend well together.

“I have in my tean young but talented players that are ready to learn and I have seen a remarkable improvement from my boys. The Enyimba boys played so well in today’s match and either side could have won. But I am happy that my team won”, Emordi disclosed.

New Enyimba  goalkeeper, Moses   Ocheje has expressed happiness after guiding the People’s Elephant to their first victory at this year’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super 6 championship in Abuja.

Enyimba, who lost their first duel to the Flying Eagles last Saturday, put up a better performance on Monday and were rewarded with a 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves.

Ifeanyi George scored from the penalty spot in the 14th minute to hand the People’s Elephant their first win of the tournament.

Ocheje, who just completed his move to Enyimba, put up a five-star performance as he denied the Seasiders on several occasions on his debut for Enyimba.

He told supersport.com that he was excited to have helped Enyimba record their first victory against Warri Wolves in Abuja.

“This is my first game for Enyimba, and I am so much happy that we won the match which is also our first win in the Super 6 championship. Warri Wolves were superb in this encounter, but I thank God who gave me the grace not to allow them to score,” Ocheje said to supersport.com

The experienced goalkeeper would be happy if given the chance again in Enyimba’s next game against Dolphins in the tournament.

“I would be glad if the coach can start me again in our next match, and I promise to live up to expectations again,” the former Sunshine Stars skipper said to supersport.com.

Ifeanyi George netted from the penalty spot as  Enyimba International beat Warri Wolves one-nil in Monday’s lunch time match of the Super Six Invitational Tournament.

George scored the only goal as Enyimba produced a good performance to get their first victory of the competition.

It took Enyimba fifteen minutes to find a breakthrough as Ifeanyi fired home from the spot after an under pressure Ogagote Oke handled the ball in the penalty area.

The Seasiders responded well to the early setback, but Enyimba goalkeeper Moses Ocheje protected his side’s lead with a couple of fine saves to deny Kelvin Itoya.

Wolves’ defence struggled to deal with the two-time CAF Champions League winners at some stage in the first half, and Enyimba almost took advantage when Ezekiel Bassey dribbled his way through the defence line but couldn’t beat Daniel Akpeyi.

Chances were few and far between in the last ten minutes of the first half, but Enyimba had a one goal advantage at half time. In the 51st minute, a beautiful interplay between Ikechukwu Ibenegbu and Ezenwa Oturugu, saw the latter teeing up the former, who forced a brilliant save from Ocheje.

Some minutes after, Ocheje once again denied Wolves with another reflex save.

Ocheje, who has defended the colours of Sunshine Stars and Kano Pillars in the past, also put his body down to deny Ezenwa Otorugu.

Ifeanyi forced goalkeeper Akpeyi into a diving save with a close-range shot in the 68th minute.

The two teams continued to carve out chances for themselves, with Joseph Osadiaye whipping a well executed free kick which was brilliantly turned away by the outstanding Ocheje.

Ocheje almost let his team down when he misjudged a corner kick, but one of his defenders cleared the danger on the touchline. However, the People’s Elephants held on for an important win in their quest to win the pre-season tournament.

  • Enyimba City ticks again after holidays

Enyimba City ticks again after holidays

The hum lessened during the Yuletide. You could hardly hear the clang and jangle of the workmen’s metals or the sustained din of hagglers. Aba, the commercial headquarters of Abia State, lost much of its bustle. But now, it is ticking back to what the people used to know. Artisans, traders, commercial drivers and other residents who travelled out to their hometowns are returning and the Enyimba City is filling up again.

Some returnees, especially parents making purchases for their children and wards lamented that the economic crunch was still taking its toll on their finances.

One such parent, Mr. Frank Olewe, said, “I returned to Aba from Item on January 1 because one of my daughters’ school resumed on the 4th and her other siblings including those at the university will be resuming soon. So I am here to buy some of the things that they will need for the term. We thank God for granting us the grace into 2015, but the truth is that majority of the civil servants are finding it hard especially as some of us are yet to receive our salaries”.

Another parent, Gideon Offor who said he worked in a private firm, said, he was in the market to buy things for his kids before prices of goods and other commodities got out of reach of low income earners as was usually the case in January when most traders capitalise on the limited goods to exploit traders.

“Most companies from my experience usually take stock from December until sometime mid-January when they will start supplying goods in the market. So some of the traders who stocked products that are in demand will always hike their prices because from experience, it is usually like that in January and that is why I am here before the market gets crowded”.

A trader who sells textbooks at Ariaria International lamented low patronage blaming publishers for supplying books and other learning materials to schools that persuades parents to buy from the school instead of coming to the market to patronize them.

The situation was not the same at school road market where parents and people that sells school bags in commercial quantity were seen making choices of school bags for sell and their kids. Some of them who commented said school bags were part of the inevitable that children needs and can be affordable for parents of any class depending on the person’s choice and taste.

However, visit round some of the commercial park reveal that until the time of this report people are still coming back the hinterlands and other places where they spent their Christmas, a few of the commuters including Mrs. Ngozi Chika told our reporter that she was coming back from one of the northern states and would not be going until the 2015 election ends.

According to Chika, there is so much tension surrounding this election. My family (Children) came back December. My husband is no more and I can’t risk my life and that of my children staying in the north until this coming election passes by. Until the election ends and swearing-in of whoever that will emerge the president takes place, we are not going to go back. At least, we can talk about feeding for now and talk about how my children can continue with their studies later”, she said.

However, while the Christmas returnees were enjoying a relative peace and secured environment, the Aba Area Commander, ACP Peter Wagbara in a chat with The Nation attributed the peace recorded within his command during the festive period to the commitment of men and officers in his command towards achieving the instructions and directives of the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba and Abia State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ibrahim that police in Nigeria and Abia State should humble, loyal and dedicated to their duties.

According to Wagbara, “we also adopted a proactive operational strategy such as visibility policing; where police were seen in almost all the nooks and crannies of the city, because we believe that high visibility policing will scare hoodlums from taking the advantage that people left their homes for the hinterlands to come and loot their properties. Our men patrolled with their vehicle and on foot including stop and search points, all in a bid to ensure a crime free festive period.

“Adhering to the IGP’s and CP’s directives has helped in the reduction of crime and criminality drastically within the Aba and Abia Command. It might interest you to know that in this command (Aba Area Command) throughout the festive period and ass the moment that I am talking with you (Tuesday), we have not recorded any crime in the command.

“We have enjoyed a robust relationship with Aba residents which also yielded to the success we recorded during the festive period and to ensure that we maintain the standard, we are going to organise routine seminars and lectures for our officers and men to ensure that they didn’t drift from the attitudinal change.

“We are also collaborating with other security agencies in Aba, its environs and the state at large to ensure that we synergized to curb crime rate in Aba and its environs”.

He further appealed to the general public to provide the police with valuable information that would to the minimal reduction of crime rate in the commercial city that host a lot of business groups and economic activities on daily basis.

    Enyimba capture Onomuefe

Nembe City striker, Okikimusampa Onomuefe has successfully switched allegiance to the 2014 Federation Cup winners, Enyimba for the 2014/15 Glo Premier League season.

The former Kano Pillars marksman was a stand out performer for the demoted side in the outgone Nigerian top flight season.

Onomuefe said his five-star performance for Nembe City in the outgone season may have convinced the People’s Elephant to come for his service.

“Yes, I’ve moved over to Enyimba for the upcoming 2014/15 Glo Premier League season. I’m quite satisfied with what was offered and I hope to work very hard to justify the confidence the side reposed in me.

“I’ve always had soft spot and likeness for Enyimba even before they came knocking at my door, so it’s more or less a dream move and I’m sure to enjoy the environment. I know that Enyimba are star-studded but I believe I’ll stand out as well as improve on my goal-scoring prowess.

“Of course, I can’t be on the bench that’s more or less the reason they actually came for me because they appreciate my quality. I scored a stunning goal against them in Nembe City colours now I’ll score more stunning goals for them in the new season.

“I’m there to win laurels specifically the league title as I’m made to understand that’s key for them in the coming season. Of course, I’ll contribute my quota to ensure we defend successfully the Federation Cup title as well as excel at the CAF Champions League competition.

“I see my move to Enyimba as a career booster and I’ll do everything humanly possible to make it count positively,” said the former Akwa United hitman to supersport.com.

The Aba Millionaires will campaign in Africa’s most lucrative elite club competition together with Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars.

  • SOFOLUWE TO PILLARS, ENYIMBA: Don’t treat continental assignment with levity

SOFOLUWE TO PILLARS, ENYIMBA: Don’t treat continental assignment with levity

Management of league winners Pillars and runners up Enyimba have been told to take preparation for their continental outings seriously if they wish to do well.

Former international Yisa Sofoluwe, who gave the charge, said there is more to winning the premier league and picking a continental ticket, noting that lack of proper preparation, poor approach to management and over confidence had in the past stopped teams with potentials from achieving set goals.

The Dean of Defence, as he was fondly called in his days in the national team, added that with the improving standard of play in the league Nigeria ought to start calling the shots at all levels in the continent.  He, however, expressed confidence in the quality of players at the disposal of both teams, insisting that laurels can come on a silver platter, especially with maximum support from their state governments and club management.

“The league was highly competitive this season and both teams cannot be said to be pushovers, but they must avoid the usual pitfalls like poor preparation and travel arrangement among other things.  If they get the support I think they will do well,” he enthused.

Sofoluwe, who is being courted by some clubs ahead of the next season, re-echoed the need for all departments of the league to improve so that whoever emerges champion can withstand the heat anywhere.

“We must continuously improve the league in all aspects, standard of play, officiating, management in fact everything so that whoever wins the league at any point in time can truly beat his chest and be in a position to compete anywhere, but where a team emerges through sharp practice, such as poor officiating, it will tell along the line,” he said in a chat with SportingLife on Friday.

Enyimba threatens to boycott Fed Cup final over cash

Players of 2014 Federation Cup holders, Enyimba have threatened not to play this year’s cup final because they are owed bonuses for 28 games and signing-on fees for the just concluded season.

The players are complaining over the non-payment of 28 match bonuses and sign-on fees for the season that is just ending.

An official of the club told AfricanFootball.com: “The players are very serious with their threats of not playing the Federation Cup final match.

“We are even lucky that they did not fail to show up for the last league encounter with Pillars in Aba on Sunday after they refused to move into a closed camp called by management. They trained on their own for over three days.”

A player of the Aba millionaires, who did not want to be identified, added: “We shall be staging a peaceful demonstration to the Government House in Umuahia today to press home our demands.

If they fail to settle the debts owed us, that have run into 28 match bonuses and signing-on fees for this season, we will not go to Lagos.”

On Sunday, Enyimba will face Dolphins in the Federation Cup final in Lagos. Enyimba won the cup competition last year after beating Warri Wolves on penalty shootout.
