    Heartland vows to bounce back after Enyimba loss

    Heartland FC chief coach, Charles Uzor has praised the Imo fans for their massive support to the team in their 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League first game of the season.

    Uzor who was distrust at the Naze Millionaires’ 3-1 loss to Enyimba on Sunday assures Imo people that the team would bounce back from the defeat and that they should keep on supporting the team.

    The Heartland coach reckoned that the young Naze Millionaires played against a more experienced Enyimba side and that things could have been different had they converted the chances they had earlier in the game. 

    “Enyimba is a formidable team with experienced  players while Heartland team are very youthful side. The game when it started was going on good but sometimes you know younger players lose concentration when it matters most but all the same we are promising our fans that this team will come back stronger and better,” Uzor told journalists.

    “In football such situations happen if the goals that came in, in the second half nobody will talk about experience. How do you get experience? Nobody was born with it. It is constant when you keep doing same particular thing constantly then you build the confidence and the experience. 

    “This is the first game of the season and you don’t decide who takes the league or who goes on relegation from the first game. Of course the game wasn’t that too bad but the result came out this way doesn’t mean we will not come up. We are assuring Imo people that this team will come up stronger and better.”

    Rangers to face tough Angolan side 

    Former Nigeria champions Enyimba International will start their continental campaign with a clash against Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante in the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup next month.

    The two-time African champions were  among the 12 teams that drew bye in the first qualifying round of the 2024/25 competition.

    To book a meeting with Enyimba, the Burkinabe’s Etoile Filante defeated Guinea’s Hafia FC on away goals rule to progress into the next round.

    Filante held their opponents to a 1-1 draw away in the first leg, and drew 0-0 in the reverse fixture.

    The People’s Elephant as Enyimba are known will face Etoile away from home on September 13, while the reverse fixture will be played on September 20 in Uyo, Nigeria.

    Meanwhile, Rangers have to go past Sagrada Esperance of Angola to reach the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Champions League.

    Rangers scraped past US Zilimadjou from Comoros 2-1 on aggregate in the first preliminary round, while Esperanca saw off St Louis Sun United of Seychelles 4-0 on aggregate.

    Rangers will host the first leg on Friday, September 12, while the return leg will be a week later in Angola.

    The overall winners will march on to the group stage of the annual competition.

    NPFL: Enyimba gear up for new season with key signings

    As the countdown to the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season continues, teams are busy strengthening their squads for a successful campaign. 

    Former Nigeria champions Enyimba International have been particularly active in the transfer market, bolstering their squad ahead of the upcoming season.

    The return of NPFL matches to TV screens last season was a significant milestone, thanks to a five-year broadcast rights deal worth N5.91 Billion with StarTimes.

    This partnership has enabled fans across the country to watch live matches from the comfort of their homes, bringing the excitement of the league to a wider audience.

    Enyimba’s latest signing is 27-year-old striker Wasiu Jimoh, who joins from Zambian side Forest Rangers.

    Jimoh is no stranger to the NPFL, having played for several clubs including Shooting Stars, IfeanyiUbah, Plateau United and Rivers United.

    He has also gained experience in the CAF Confederation Cup, scoring three goals in Africa’s second-tier club competition, where Enyimba will compete in the second qualifying round of the 2024/25 season.

    Another addition to the team is goalkeeper Abubakar Zalii, who arrives from Doma United. Zalii’s signing may be linked to the departure of Super Eagles’ goalie Leke Ojo, who transferred to Sudanese side Al Merreikh. 

    Odinaka Francis has also joined the Aba Landlords from Lobi Stars, further strengthening Enyimba’s squad.

    These new signings and others who have opted to stay at their respective clubs will be looking to prove their mettle while the fans cheer them on from the various match centres and also from the TV screens live on StarTimes.

    Last season, Enyimba were dethroned as champions by Rangers International, finishing third, seven points behind the champions. 

    Chairman Kanu Nwankwo is determined to reverse this trend, investing in new players to boost the team’s chances of success.

    With these key signings, Enyimba International is poised to make a strong comeback in the 2024/25 NPFL season, and StarTimes will bring all the action to life for fans across the country.

    Enyimba confirms Olanrewaju as substantive coach

    Record winners of Nigeria topflight Enyimba International have confirmed the appointment of Yemi Olanrewaju as their substantive head coach.

    Enyimba officially made the confirmation public yesterday after the former Golden Eaglets assistant trainer signed his new contract at the club more than a month ago.

    Olanrewaju took charge of the People’s Elephant on interim basis in May after Finidi George left the post to handle the Super Eagles.

    The 32-year-old also known as Yema, joined Enyimba as an assistant coach in 2022 and played a crucial role in the club’s league title success in the 2022/23 season under Finidi.

    Olarenwaju’s baptism of fire as Enyimba’s substantive coach comes up on September 7, when the club face Beyond Limits in their opening fixture of the 2024/25 NPFL season.

    Enyimba will also campaign in Africa’s second tier club competition, the CAF Confederation Cup.

    Two time CAF Champions League winners, Enyimba FC of Aba will on Saturday engage Sierra Leonean club side, Football Club Kallon in a friendly game.

    Enyimba Sporting Director, Ifeanyi Ekwueme who made this disclosure, said both teams are playing the game at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba by 3pm to gauge the level of their preparedness for the CAF inter club competitions and the league.

    The Freetown- based side is owned by the biggest football export of Sierra Leone and former AS Monaco (France), Inter Milan (Italy) and Genoa (Italy) striker, Mohammed Kallon and they also took part in the just concluded Coal City International Pre-season Tourney held Enugu just as Enyimba.

    Ekwueme also revealed the highlight of the encounter will see Enyimba Boss, Kanu Nwankwo welcome his former teammate at Inter Milan to Enyimba City and he will be joined by fellow ex-international and Enyimba Board member, Uche Okechukwu among other ex-Super Eagles and Enyimba players.

    Meanwhile, all is now set for the unveiling of Enyimba FC newly signed players to their ever darling and supporting fans as well as the media.

    The unveiling which will be done on Friday at the Enyimba Int’l Stadium, Aba from 9am. 

    It will afford the eagerly awaiting fans of the People’s Elephant the first hand of meeting with the new acquisitions that will help the club regain their league title as well as return the team back to glory days.

    Returning Jimoh joins Enyimba as Plateau United capture Chinedu, Adeyinka

    Former Kwara United forward Wasiu Jimoh has returned to Nigeria from Zambia after two seasons away.

    Jimoh last played for the Harmony Boys in the Nigeria Premier Football League two seasons ago before joining Zesco United in Zambia.

    He spent last season with Forest Rangers also in Zambia before returning to Nigeria.

    Jimoh has decided to join Enyimba International ahead of the CAF Confederation Cup.

    Before departing Nigeria, Jimoh also played for FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Shooting Stars.

    Meanwhile, Plateau United have announced the capture of former Lobi Stars’ Chinedu Sunday Chukwu and ex-Kwara United Goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka as they look towards correcting the mistakes of last season that cost them a continental ticket.

    The Peace Boys finished the 2023-24 season in fifth spot with five points adrift of third spot occupied by Enyimba who picked the last slot from the league.

    A press statement from the club media indicated that Sunday and Adeyinka both signed two years contract with the quest to return Plateau United to the top. 

    Sunday and imposing defender scored four goals and gave five assists while he played for Lobi Stars last season.

    Adeyinka on his part made several important saves to help Kwara United remain in the elite division despite courting the relegation zone for the most part of the season.

    The management of Enyimba FC is set to renew the contract of the club’s head coach, Yemi Olanrewaju ahead of the next season of the Nigeria Premier Football League.

    Olanrewaju was appointed as interim head coach as a replacement for Finidi George after the latter joined the Super Eagles and the young coach was able to pick a continental ticket for the club.

    Sudan’s Al Merreikh unveil Enyimba’s goalie Olorunleke

    Former Enyimba captain and goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke has been unveiled as one of Sudanese side Al Merreikh’s latest signings.

    The Super Eagles goalkeeper signed an Initial two-year deal with an option to further extend it by a year.

    While reacting to his unveiling on his social media page shortly after the unveiling ceremony, Ojo Olorunleke attributed his transfer to his new side to God.

    He said he was thrilled to take his career abroad after so many years in the Nigerian league.

    The 28-year-old ended his stay with nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions , Enyimba  after three years to link up with Al Merreikh.

    The former Akwa United and Sunshine Stars goalie won the NPFL title with the People’s Elephant two seasons ago. He was Nigeria’s third choice goalkeeper at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

    Enyimba, Rangers sanctioned over ‘Oriental Derby’ infractions

    Rangers International of Enugu and Enyimba International of Aba have both been charged and fined for several infractions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) rules arising from their respective conducts in the Matchday 35 fixture in Enugu on Sunday, June 9.

    Enyimba was charged with a slew of breaches and fined a total of N10, 000, 000 (Ten million Naira) including forfeiture of three points and three goals as well as a directive to identify and produce for further investigation and appropriate sanctions players and officials complicit in the disruptive conducts (particularly against the match officials) that led to a discontinuation of the game.

    Rangers, the host team was cited for breach of Rule B15.24 relating to selling tickets beyond the capacity of the stadium and leading to overcrowding and endangering the safety of players, match officials and fans.

    Based on the same rule B13.52, Rangers were also charged for failure to provide adequate and effective security before, during and after the match.

    On a third count, Rangers were charged with a breach of Rule B13.52.1 for failing to implement adequate and effective crowd control measures. On a fourth count, the Enugu side was also charged for failure to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to restricted areas.

    For the listed breaches, Rangers was fined a total of N5,000,000 (Five million Naira) and ordered to implement a more effective crowd control mechanism in subsequent home games

    In specific charges brought against Enyimba International, the NPFL listed breaches of Rule C9, B6.23, B13.18, C1.1 and B13.24.

    On charge B6.23, Enyimba was fined N5,000,000 for disrupting on-going transmission of a live match broadcast.

    The NPFL Summary Jurisdiction also made “an order for the forfeiture of three points and three goals in favour of your opponents for refusing to allow the penalty awarded in favour of your opponents to be taken, thereby disrupting the match and bringing the game to disrepute”.

    It further ordered Enyimba to “identify and produce for further investigation and appropriate sanctions, other players and officials complicit in the disruptive conducts (particularly against the match officials) that led to a discontinuation of the game, in addition to the following identified players; Eze Ekwutoziam (Jersey No.6), Chibuike Nwaiwu (Jersey No.27), and Akanni Elijah (Jersey No.10)”.

    The two clubs are expected to in accordance with Rule C26, required, within 48 hours of the date of the issuance of the notice of the charges and the fines, to either submit to the summary jurisdiction and the sanctions or elect to be dealt with by a disciplinary panel.

    They are also required to communicate in writing whichever option they adopted within seven working days.
