EPL: Some of The Things You Might Have Missed

English Premier League on Saturday was action pact as expected as 17 goals were recorded from the seven matches that were played.

Incase you missed the matches including the star match of the day at Stamford Bridge in the game against Pep Guardiola’s side, read below some of the things you might have missed.

    Chelsea 0 – 1 Manchester City

    OPTA FACT

    • Kevin De Bruyne has scored nine of his last 11 Man City goals from outside the box, including each of the last four.

A game which didn’t quite live up to its billing – not helped, of course, by Alvaro Morata limping off in the first-half with a hamstring injury. After a goalless first-half, Manchester City’s control greatly increased and Pep Guardiola’s playmakers began to make deep incisions into a shuffled Chelsea’s defence.

When Kevin De Bruyne eventually gave the visitors the lead, after a well-timed pass from Gabriel Jesus and scything move, it was a goal they thoroughly deserved. And, ultimately, it was an advantage they protected well: Chelsea mounted a vague response, but all the best chances in the remainder of the game fell to City.

Saturday’s round-up, as Tottenham run over Huddersfield and Manchester United continue to click through the gears.

    Huddersfield 0 – 4 Tottenham

    OPTA FACT

    • Harry Kane now has 13 goals for club & country in September 2017; his best ever goal tally in a single month of his career.

A real lesson. Huddersfield have begun Premier League life well, but this was not David Wagner’s best day: Huddersfield played into Tottenham’s hands, got caught too high up the field three times inside the first half-hour and conceded as many goals in the first half as they had in their previous six games.

Spurs spent most of the second half well within their comfort zone, but two goals from Harry Kane (who is now just 14 goals short of Teddy Sheringham’s Premier League record for the club) and Ben Davies capped a performance in which they played some of their brightest football of the season. Moussa Sissoko added a fourth from close range in second-half stoppage-time.

    Goals: Kane 10′, 23′, Davies 16′, Sissoko 90′

    Bournemouth 0 – 0 Leicester

Bournemouth certainly started like a side determined pull out of the relegation zone before the international break. Jermain Defoe had the clearest opportunity, but slammed his shot against the crossbar. Eddie Howe’s team were the better of the two and certainly posed the tougher questions but, oddly for two teams who don’t exactly specialise in clean sheets, this proved a stalemate.

    Goals: *Tumbleweed*

    Manchester United 4 – 0 Crystal Palace

    OPTA FACT

    • This is the first time that Marcus Rashford has assisted two goals in a single game for Man Utd.

Exactly the start here that Palace didn’t want. Only three minutes had passed when Marcus Rashford knotted up Joel Ward before setting up Juan Mata to open the scoring. Ten minutes before the break, an impressive Manchester United performance was further rewarded by their second, Fellaini scoring after good work from Ashley Young. Fellaini would double his tally just after half-time and Romelu Lukaku scored a late fourth for his seventh goal in as many games.

    Goals: Mata 3′, Fellaini 35′ & 48′, Lukaku 86′

    Stoke 2 – 1 Southampton

    OPTA FACT

    • Saido Berahino is now without a goal in 31 hours & 23 minutes of Premier League football (Stoke & WBA combined).

Stoke have quietly begun to go off the boil, having not won a Premier League game since beating Arsenal in August and having not led in any game at all since their 4-0 win over Rochdale in the League Cup. Mame Diouf gave them the lead here, heading in Xherdan Shaqiri’s corner on 40 minutes.

It wasn’t all good news in the first half, though, as there was still time for Saido Berahino to miss a penalty. His wait for a first Stoke goal continues. Fifteen minutes before time, Maya Yoshida acrobatically converted Shane Long’s flick to score only Southampton’s second goal away from home this season. Peter Crouch would have the last word, though, scoring late against his old side to win Mark Hughes three overdue points.

    Goals: Diouf 40′, Crouch 85′- Yoshida 75′

    West Brom 2- 2 Watford

    OPTA FACT

    • Abdoulaye Doucouré has scored 3 goals in his last 7 league games, as many as in his previous 57.

Despite losing, Tony Pulis would have been greatly encouraged by the improvement he saw in his side last Monday at Arsenal and West Brom initially built on that here, scoring twice in three first-half minutes through Salomon Rondon and Jonny Evans. A first goal of the season for each and the first time since May 2017 that Pulis’s team had scored more than one in a game. Abdoulaye Doucoure pulled one back before the interval and then late, late into second-half injury time, Richarlison headed in Jose Holebas’s free-kick to steal a point.

    GoalsRondon 18′, Evans 21′ – Doucoure 37′, Richarlison 90′

    West Ham 1 – 0 Swansea

    OPTA FACT

    • Swansea have never kept an away clean sheet at West Ham, conceding 75 goals in 32 games in all comps (W2 D7 L23).

Not a first half that gave anybody great reason for cheer; these really are two sides struggling for confidence. It didn’t really improve in the second period, either, and this game – if anyone chooses to remember it at all – become more notable for Slaven Bilic’s curious substitutions; Javier Hernandez’s withdrawal, in particular, proved unpopular with the home fans.

Still, West Ham mounted a late siege and, after Andy Carroll had hit the bar minutes earlier, Diafra Sakho (remember him?) finished well to snatch the points. A relief for the home fans, less so the ones who (quite understandably) decided to leave early.

    Goals: Sakho ’90

  • EPL: Liverpool’s visit ‘special’ for me, Benitez says

EPL: Liverpool’s visit ‘special’ for me, Benitez says

Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United host Liverpool in the English Premier League on Sunday and the manager says playing against his former side will be a special and emotional experience.

The Spaniard was in charge of the Merseyside club for six years from 2004 and guided them to their fifth Champions League title in his debut season.

After spells at Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid, Benitez was brought in to save Newcastle from relegation in March last year.

He did not succeed but helped them back into the top flight immediately and faces his old side which he has not lost against in two previous meetings.

“It’s a special game for me. It will be emotional, because I spent so many years there, and have so many good memories. My family still live in Liverpool, so it is my home,” Benitez told Newcastle’s website (www.nufc.co.uk).

“I have a lot of positive, very good relationships with Liverpool fans, (including) the families connected to Hillsborough. There are a lot of connections, and it will be very emotional.”

Nostalgia aside, Benitez said he is focused on ensuring his team get all three points against Liverpool.

Newcastle are 10th in the league with nine points from six games.

“I have to concentrate on Newcastle United, trying to win,” he said.

Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp seeks his first victory over Newcastle United to stay close to the four teams above his side in the league table.

  • Burnley stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Burnley stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Sam Vokes scored twice as Burnley surprised defending English champions Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea had Captain Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas sent off and Burnley took full advantage through Vokes’s brace and a superb Stephen Ward’s effort.

Two second half goals from new signing Alvaro Morata and David Luiz were not enough to save the champions’ blushes.

Burnley’s win, the club’s first at Chelsea since 1971, was one of the few surprising results in the opening day of the English Premier League (EPL).

Newcomers Huddersfield stunned Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park while Watford forced 18-time English champions Liverpool to 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road.

  • Sanchez stars as Arsenal close on top four

Sanchez stars as Arsenal close on top four

Olivier Giroud grabbed a brace as Arsenal bolstered their bid to gatecrash the top four with a convincing 4-1 victory at Stoke City.

The Frenchman started and finished the scoring to take his tally to 16 for the season as the Gunners continued their rich-vein of form with a sixth win in seven outings in all competitions.

Mesut Ozil and the mercurial Alexis Sanchez were also on target as the visitors eventually made their superiority count to move a point behind fourth-placed Liverpool with two matches to play.

Substitute Peter Crouch had threatened to drag the Potters back into it at 2-0 when he appeared to handle the ball into the net, but a controversial moment didn’t have an impact on the outcome as Arsenal finally won at Stoke for the first time since 2010.

    TALKING POINT

Arsenal’s Champions League hopes are alive and kicking – but would it be enough for the fans?

The Gunners’ bid for a 21st straight season of dining at Europe’s top table have looked bleak in the past few months – but now they are on a charge. Liverpool have faltered and if the Merseysiders slip up at West Ham on Sunday, the door will open for Wenger to sneak into the top four once again. For most clubs finishing in the Champions League places and reaching the FA Cup final would be enough, but Gunners still feel they have not lived up to expectations. After the Bayern Munich humbling Wenger’s future looked in major doubt, but the Frenchman may well end up doing enough to fight on. Watch this space.

    MAN OF THE MATCH

Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) – Quite simply the Gunners’ talisman. Provided a sensational pass for Ozil’s goal and scored the match-clinching third despite appearing to pick up a knock.

Giroud’s first goal was the first time Arsenal have opened the scoring in a Premier League game at Stoke City.

The Sanchez to Ozil combination has provided five PL goals this season, only Swansea‘s Sigurdsson to Llorente (6) have combined for more.

  • Chelsea wins the English Premier League

Chelsea wins the English Premier League

Chelsea wins the  Premier League title after defeating West Bromwich Albion in an away match 1-0 at the Hawthorns.

Late goal from  Michy Batshuayi  gave the Blues the league, which mean they hold an inviolable 10-point advantage over Tottenham.

It is the sixth time that blues have won EPL title and the fourth time since 2004-05 season that they have claimed the Premier League title.

Their campaign has been one of virtual unabated excellence since a sticky period in September, when they lost successive matches against Liverpool and Arsenal saw them drop as far as eighth.

The Chelsea first team manager Antonio Conte, who arrived in the summer to guide the team after a disappointing 2015-16 season, thereafter altered his side to play with three at the back, and that proved the catalyst for a 13-match winning streak that proved to be the decisive run as they claimed the crown.

Chelsea can yet complete a league and cup double as they face Arsenal on May 27 at Wembley in the FA Cup final.

Conte’s men have been recognised individually as well as collectively, meanwhile. Summer signing N’Golo Kante won the PFA Player of the Year award and also claimed the Football Writer’s prize, with Eden Hazard finishing as runner-up in both categories.

Diego Costa has been their top scorer in the Premier League this season, having netted 20 goals for the campaign to date, just four shy of the division’s leading marksman, Romelu Lukaku.

The long-term aim for Conte must be to maintain the momentum created by this success and ensure that his squad does not fade in the same manner that Mourinho’s did previously.

  • EPL: Chelsea beat Bournemouth 3-1 to maintain 7-point lead

EPL: Chelsea beat Bournemouth 3-1 to maintain 7-point lead

Chelsea maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.

Pressured by Tottenham’s earlier thrashing of Watford, the visitors from Stamford Bridge looked to be cruising after two goals in three first-half minutes.

But Bournemouth, who had already hit the post, got back into the contest through Joshua King’s long-range deflected effort.

The Cherries continued to press after half-time only for Chelsea to gradually regain control and secured the points through Marcos Alonso’s impeccable free-kick.

The Blues next match is against Manchester United at Old Trafford, their sternest of six league fixtures between now and the end of the season.

If they return with their seven-point advantage still intact, they will be a huge step closer to a sixth title and fifth in the Premier League era.

In other EPL matches also played today, Liverpool came from behind to beat Stoke City 3-1 and stay on course for a top-four finish, thanks to goals by substitutes Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool remain third in the table.

Also, Manchester City ended a four-game winless run with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Hull City. The victory has boosted their hopes of finishing in a Champions League spot.

  • Cahill’s late goal snatches victory for Chelsea at Stoke

Cahill’s late goal snatches victory for Chelsea at Stoke

Gary Cahill made up for conceding a penalty kick by scoring a late winner as Chelsea moved closer to the English Premier League (EPL) title with victory at Stoke.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the England defender settled a heated encounter three minutes from time by sweeping home after Stoke failed to clear a Willian corner kick.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa was involved in a running battle with Stoke’s defenders — being booked himself and involved in incidents that saw Bruno Martins Indi and Phil Bardsley cautioned.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men late on when Bardsley was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Willian had given Chelsea a first-half lead with an in-swinging free-kick from the left that caught out goalkeeper Lee Grant at his near post.

Stoke defender Martins Indi then had a goal ruled out for a push by team-mate Saido Berahino on Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, the home side drew level when Cahill was ruled to have pushed Jon Walters, who blasted in the resulting penalty kick.

The visitors had nearly all the chances, with Marcos Alonso firing a free-kick against the bar and Pedro denied by a fine Grant save.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has spoken in the past of his admiration for Costa — a striker of undoubted talent who plays on the edge.

Hughes, a fearsome centre-forward in his playing days, has suggested he sees a bit of his own playing style in Costa’s game.

The Spain international certainly did his best to rough up Stoke’s defenders, and seemed in danger of getting sent off after he was booked with barely a quarter-of-an-hour gone.

His tussles with Martins Indi were a feature of the game from the off, and referee Anthony Taylor had to speak to both players following an early off-the-ball tangle.

Costa, though, drew the Stoke defenders into the battle — and then concentrated more on his football after half-time to keep himself out of trouble.

He made sure not to retaliate when Bardsley clattered him shortly before the break, then forced Martins Indi into a challenge for which he was booked.

There was to be no goal for Costa — chasing his 50th in the Premier League — but he still came out smiling as Stoke lost their discipline.(NAN)

  • Pogba ruled out of EPL, France games with hamstring injury

Pogba ruled out of EPL, France games with hamstring injury

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the France international pulled up in the second half of United’s Europa League win over FC Rostov on Thursday and had to be replaced by Marouane Fellaini.

The 24-year-old is also expected to miss France’s matches against Luxembourg and Spain later this month.

United boss Jose Mourinho could not say how much longer Pogba would be out.

Asked whether he would be out for around three weeks, Mourinho replied: “Yeah. I don’t know for sure, but for sure, no Middlesbrough and no national team.”

Pogba, the world’s most expensive player, has provided seven goals and five assists in 41 matches for United this season, but has been criticised for his recent performances.

Before the match, Mourinho defended his player by saying: “I feel that the world is losing values and I am scared about the level of envy coming in. It is not Paul’s fault that he gets 10 times the money some players did in the past.”

Dutchman Daley Blind also went off in the match with what looked like concussion, but no news was given on the extent of his problem.

  • Man United waltz past Sunderland, Mikhitaryan nets cracker

Man United waltz past Sunderland, Mikhitaryan nets cracker

Manchester United  surged past Sunderland 3-1 in a Boxing Day English Premier League (EPL) clash, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan netting a superb goal.

Blind combined with Ibrahimovic in the first half to net the opener, charging into the box and finishing low into the bottom corner, Goal reports.

Ibrahimovic sealed all three points after being teed up by Paul Pogba to score a deserved goal as the clock ticked down.

Jordan Pickford had been instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable for David Moyes’ side but was powerless to prevent Mkhitaryan’s sublime back-heel flick in the 86th minute.
