    Kelechi Iheanacho makes EPL debut

NIGERIA youth international Kelechi Iheanacho made his English Premier League debut for Manchester City on Saturday in a 2-0 win over Odion Ighalo’s Watford.

The 18-year-old Iheanacho was an 89th minute substitute for Raheem Sterling.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) at FIFA U17 Championship in 2013 has been unused substitute in all Manchester City’s league games this season.

Last season, he played for City’s developmental team before he was granted a work permit.

Manchester City set a club record of 10 successive league victories by maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season with a 2-0 win over Watford at Eastlands on Saturday.

Raheem Sterling’s first competitive goal for City since his £49 million move from Liverpool set up the win early in the second half, before Fernandinho added a second with a fierce drive to end the newly-promoted visitors’ unbeaten league start.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side are three points clear at the top of the table after winning their first four league matches of the season without conceding a goal.

The run of 10 victories, stretching back to April, beat a record set in 1912.

They were patient in breaking down a dogged but limited Watford side, and by the end of the match were showing the attacking verve which has made them the early favourites to win the title.

City are about to add to that threat with the £52 million signing from Wolfsburg of Kevin De Bruyne, who flew into Manchester on Saturday for a medical, and his arrival is bound to sharpen up a side who struggled in the first half despite plenty of possession.

Pellegrini had warned in his programme notes that Quique Flores would bring a disciplined, hard-working side to Eastlands and he was proved right.

Watford were well-organised and difficult to break down, with Etienne Capoue and Valon Behrami working hard in midfield to shield the back four.

Pellegrini’s side had to be patient, even as they enjoyed plenty of possession, but after a frustrating opening 20 minutes, they began to create chances.

Aleksandar Kolarov lifted a free kick over the bar and, moments later, Craig Cathcart got across to block when Fernandinho and Yaya Toure combined to send in Raheem Sterling down the right.

Man United pip Tottenham in EPL opening day

An own goal from Kyle Walker ensured Manchester United opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday, Goal reports.

The right-back stabbed the ball into his own net midway through the first half after a new-look United side had made a shaky start.

David de Gea watched on as Sergio Romero made his United debut, with Louis van Gaal stating that the Spanish goalkeeper is not in the right frame of mind amid ongoing speculation over a move to Real Madrid.

The Argentine international Romero produced an assured display – making a couple of fine, late saves – as Tottenham pushed for equalizer.

Van Gaal must have seen plenty of room for improvement as he aims to turn United into title contenders, but will be happy with three points after losing at home to Swansea City on the opening day last year.

Romero, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay made their Premier League debuts for United, while Germany World Cup winner, Bastian Schweinsteiger, was among the substitutes.

  • Fans’ crazy moments return as EPL resumes today

Fans’ crazy moments return as EPL resumes today

AS the thrills, frills and suspense that come with the English Premier League (EPL) resume today in far away England, supporters of premiership clubs across the country are set for those unimaginable things they do to prove their support for their preferred clubs. Already, they have started talking tough, arguing and boasting about their respective clubs’ chances of lifting the coveted trophy at the end of the season.

The story is told of a man who had to throw his wife down through the window of their apartment in the upper floor of a storey building because his wife blocked the television when he would not give her the attention she desired. A few years ago, The Nation reported the story of an Arsenal fan who went into coma after he was stabbed by a fan of a rival club. He regained consciousness in the hospital the following day and the first thing he said was ‘Up Gunners!’

Over the years, the league has enjoyed large following among football lovers in the country, pitting children against their parents and husbands against their wives because of the gap the penchant for watching the games sometimes create on the home front.

Some followers of the EPL who spoke with our correspondent revealed the pains and risks they have had to endure to sustain their support for their various clubs.

Solomon Adeoye, a university don who never liked football, revealed how he too became a follower of the premiership in the bid to rescue his son from his lust for football.

Adeoye said: “I never liked football for any reason, not to talk of being a follower of the English Premiership. Incidentally, the urgent need to guide my son forced me to become one.

“It all began on a day I went to visit him in school. When I got there and asked after him, the name I called did not sound familiar to his colleagues. They were all wondering who the person could be.

“Suddenly, one of them, as if he had just woken up from sleep, asked, “Is it Gerard?” I was stupefied but I managed to hide my shock. Immediately, they ran to inform him that I was around. When he came, he was shocked to see me.

“I had another round of shock when I went into his room and discovered that his life was built around the club. His books, wall, chair and table were covered with Liverpool logo and colour. Everything around him revolved around the premiership and his club to the extent that his education was secondary.

“It was then I realised that I had lost my son to football and Liverpool, and that was why he distanced himself from me. I was detached from his world and wanted him to live in mine.”

He continued: “The look on his face showed that he was expecting me to rebuke him, but I still chose to keep quiet, pondering in my heart what I would do next. All through my stay with him, I said nothing about it.

“When I left, I thought that the best way to win him was to be like him. Thereafter, I decided to choose a rival club to follow, and the club I chose was Manchester United.

“Because I knew nothing about them, I went to buy books and other relevant materials about the club. I also did online studies to know all their players and their histories and read about other clubs too.

“When he came home one weekend, I told him that my club would defeat his. Incidentally, the two clubs were playing on that day. When I said that, he was shocked, looking at me with a kind of surprise because he had never heard me discussing football before. I went further to tell him the names of the players, the coaches and their history.

“At that point, he got tickled and sat joyfully beside me with his eyes widely opened to hear more. Before I could finish delighting him with details of the league, he woke up from his bewilderment and vivaciously engaged me in sizzling argument about the premiership.

“We spoke like age mates and friends and from there. Our relationship became very cordial and he began to accept my advice on the need for him to make his education his priority. Today, he enjoys both football and his studies and we are all better for it.”

It was a different kettle of fish for Ibrahim Olawale, a Chelsea fan who relived how he was beaten to pulp by fans of a rival team because he sang the praise of his team.

He said: “I love my team a lot and would not stop at anything to continue to support them. If there would have been any reason for me to stop supporting them, it would have been in 2008 when I was brutally dealt with by fans of Manchester United and Arsenal.

“I had gone to watch the European Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich and was singing the praise of my team when the Man U and Arsenal fans got angry and descended on me. They beat and inflicted severe injury on me for daring to sing the praise of Chelsea, which they wanted to lose the match.

“My love for the team is so deep that I fell ill after the club lost the 2008 final. I also fell ill when we lost the FA Cup to Blackburn Rovers last season.

“I could not comprehend why we could lose to a lowly rated team like Blackburn. I was completely overwhelmed by the thought and ended up falling sick because of it.

“I can never wish to overcome the passion because of the challenges that come with it. I am incurably in love with it and there is nothing anybody can do about it.”

As a final year student in the university, Samson Oyeniyi, a self professed diehard fan of Arsenal, spoke about how he risked his academic success to watch the Gunners, as the club is fondly called.

“I was to write my final paper and Arsenal was to play the day before that. Instead of reading to pass the examination, I left my books and went to watch Arsenal play. It was after the match that I started reading. I was not used to reading at night but I had to keep vigil to read to avoid failure. So I kept my legs in a bucket of water just to stay awake.

“It may appear silly, but I couldn’t help the situation. I certainly would not have concentrated if I had decided to read during the day.

“Before that very day, a lecturer in my school was always fixing lectures for the time premiership matches would be played. Incidentally, football matches were always televised with a large projector in my school in Ghana, such that you could watch every bit of the game from any distance. Each time the lecturer was teaching us, we would be peeping from the window to watch the matches. Seeing that our concentration was always poor, he stopped the classes and never attempted to fix lectures any time matches were to be played.”

Rilwan Olaiwola, a Man U fan, narrated how his love for the club has on several occasions made him to wager with monies meant to execute jobs for his clients. Although he has lost the bets on many occasions, he says nothing would stop him from believing and staking his money for the club.

He said: “I love my club and also love Real Madrid because of Christian Ronaldo. I can bet with anything I have on these two. I don’t hesitate to bet whenever anybody doubts the ability of the club or Ronaldo.

“These two are no-go areas for me. I have placed heavy bets on them several times. I won on some occasions and lost on some others. Even if I had lost all, I would not be deterred from further betting because of them.

“Whenever my clubs win major trophies, I organise parties for my friends to celebrate it.”

He added: “At home, my wife supports Chelsea while my son supports Arsenal. Whenever Arsenal and Man U would clash, my son would come and tell me that he would beat me very well. He and the mother always make jest of me whenever my clubs lose and I always don’t feel good about it.”

Another supporter of Chelsea who gave his name as Iroko recalled how he had to lie to his pastor to watch a league match.

He said: “It is not good to tell lies, especially in the house of God. But I had to do so one day to watch my darling team play. Sincerely, I don’t allow anything to affect my watching Chelsea matches. I may miss others but I would never miss a match involving Chelsea for any reason.

“One day, my pastor wanted me to wait for a meeting while Chelsea was billed to play. When I checked the time the meeting would start and end, I found that it would prevent me from watching the match. I thought of what to do and came up with a lie that would make him to release me. I simply told him that I was going to have a crucial meeting with another pastor in the other parish. When he had that, he said I should go immediately.

“Apart from my pastor, I have also told lies to my wife several times just to watch Chelsea’s matches. At times, I would be in our neighbourhood watching the team’s match on my way from work. She would call to know where I was and I would move away from the commentary area and tell her that I was held up in traffic.

“She always wants me to stay back in the house with her when I am supposed to be watching my team. It is all borne out of my love for the game. If my son does the same, I will not be angry because it is a prank I have also been playing.”

For Fatai Olawale, another Chelsea fan, failing to watch the club’s matches would be tantamount to sin.

He said: “If I don’t have money to eat, I must have money to watch Chelsea’s matches. If I don’t have money to watch full time, I must do everything possible to save N50 to watch the second half. I don’t joke with this at all.

“If for any reason I don’t have money to go to a viewing centre, my wife’s phone would be in trouble. After running down my phone’s battery following live commentary, I would descend on hers, exhaust her money and run the battery down. It is always causing frictions, but there is nothing she can do about it.

“Football is part of my life and I doubt if anything can separate us. In fact, as a Moslem, if I have to say my prayers and Chelsea has a match, I would put the prayer aside to watch the match and later come back to pray.”

  • Ighalo: Watford will fight their way back to EPL

Ighalo: Watford will fight their way back to EPL

Your career has been on the  high since you move to Watford, what’s the secret?

IGHALO: Well, not when I joined Watford but right from my time in Spain with Granada. It was only last season that was bad because I had an injury that kept me out for four months. Here in England, I think I am getting used to the league and it suits me. It was not easy in the beginning but hard work is paying off.

Watford missed promotion last season, are you sure the team will make it this season?

Yes, we can, we have good quality players and management.  But we still need to work hard because there are good teams in the league who want promotion tickets too.

You have scored 17 goals already, any number of goals you wish to score?

If I can reach the 20-goal mark, I will be happy but I don’t have a target. I don’t want to put myself under unnecessary pressure. I will just keep working hard.

What can you say about Italian, Spanish and English leagues?

The league in Spain is all about skills and ball possession. In Italy, it is physical and more tactical. Here in the English Championship, it is physical and tough, the tempo here in England is high, you must be fit and ready to run from the beginning of the game till the end.

What are your set goals for the season?

Promotion to the premier league is my priority, any other thing that follow is a bonus.

Did you have your parents’ backing when started playing the game?

My dad was not happy with me playing football from the beginning because he wanted me to go to school and be a graduate like some of my brothers and sisters. In fact he would beat me up when I went out to play football, but he is now a proud father.

What exactly did he want you to become?

I would have become a lawyer today.

You have played for Nigeria’s U-20 team, do you dream of appearing for the Super Eagles?

Yes, of course. It is every footballer’s dream to play for the national team. So, I am patiently waiting for my time to get into the Super Eagles.

Who is the biggest football personality you have met?

That has to be Samuel Eto’o.  It was three years ago while I was with Udinese. We played against his team, at that time Anzhi, in a Europa League game. He is a legend and a very humble man. In fact, he gave me his jersey.

    What did he tell you?

He advised me to be humble and keep working hard.

What has becoming a family man done to you and your career?

It changed everything about me, I know some people depend on me and I don’t think about myself only before I do anything but think about my family in making decisions.

Which is your toughest game for Watford so far?

That was the recent game against Blackburn Rovers. They were too physical.

What do you do at your leisure time?

I watch sport channels and Nigerian movies. Other times I sleep.

    Who are your favourite actors?

Mr. Ibu, Nkem Owoh and Charles Inoje

Best African star for December: Mikel nominated for EPL top award

Mikel Obi will battle Swansea striker Wilfried Bony, Sadio Mane of Southampton as well as Alex Song from West Ham for the best African performer in the EPL for the month of December.

Giving details, New African Soccer’s Awards Director and CEO Tunde Adelakun stated that the choice was a difficult one, given the busy schedule of games in the EPL in December.

“We had varying and diverse opinions from our followers, and this is understandable,” he said, “given the many matches that were played in December and the involvement of a high number of Africans”.

“Wilfried Bony has featured in the shortlist on two occasions in the past, as he continued to lead the line for Swansea City. His physical presence, tenacity and knack for goals has brought the attention of many clubs to him, and Swansea might have a job keeping him with the January transfer window looming.  Swansea has dropped marginally in the EPL log but Bony’s presence and impact is noticeable”, Adelakun said.

Southampton’s Sadio Mane, 22, has been in good form as he settled down gradually into his role at the southern coast club, and Adelakun was quick to provide justification for his inclusion in the shortlist.

“Mane is young and very skilful, and he brings something different into the Southampton team. He has taken time to settle, but from the games he played in December, one can see what a real asset he is turning into. Goals against Crystal Palace and Chelsea in succession are just crowns at the top of encouraging performances in the month, and I think Southampton will miss him when he goes for the African Cup.”

One late entrant into the fray is Chelsea’s Mikel Obi. The Nigeria midfielder did not have an active start to the season as many might have expected, partly due to the excellent partnership in the middle of Chelsea’s park of Fabregas and Matic. But it was all the more reason why Adelakun felt that he deserved a shout in December.

“Mikel is playing in the midst of gifted individuals at Chelsea and I was one of those who felt his playing time was over at the club at the start, but he battled his way back to the starting eleven, and has been solid and formidable since”, Adelakun said.

Alex Song, Cameroon midfield maestro, makes up the fourth name on the shortlist. He is a versatile player who, according to Adelakun, “held things together in the midfield for West Ham until the latter stages of December when they faced different class of opposition”.

“Song has settled in well, and he is an asset for West Ham. He suits Allardyce’s style of play and he is pivotal to where West Ham will finish at the end of the season”.

The winner of the December award will be announced at the weekend.

  • Ameobi can be a EPL great

Ameobi can be a EPL great

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker, Michael Owen, believes Newcastle United winger Sammy Ameobi can become one of the Premier League’s most exciting players.

Owen said the 22-year-old can go on and emulate some of the greatest talents of the English game.

“I have watched Sammy quite a bit over the years and there are times I’ve thought ‘wow” after he’s done something that few other players can.,” said the former Manchester United striker.

“He can run with the ball at his feet as fast as without, he has skill good for a goal as he showed on Sunday.

    There is something there.?

“Right now, he’s a tidy player, however, Sammy has it in him to go onto the next level. Who knows what will happen but he’s a real talent.?

“What he needs is belief in himself, maybe for the fans to sing about him. It’s amazing what that can do for your confidence and what confidence can do for any player.

The former England forward, who played alongside Sammy’s brother Shola at Newcastle United, believes Sammy has got more class than Shola.

“I’m told Sammy is a good guy and Shola was a lovely bloke as well. He’s got more in his locker than Shola.

“Sammy is definitely classy. As I said, he does produce moments that not many others can.”

Out of contract in the summer, Ameobi made an impact at Swansea City, scored a goal at Tottenham Hotspur and on Wednesday he played his part in the Capital One Cup victory at Manchester City.

    Ighalo talks up EPL action

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo said the target is EPL action next season after he grabbed his third for Watford in 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest in an English Championship clash.

Watford are now second on the table with 25 points from 13 games, a point behind leaders Derby County.

He told AfricanFootball.com that premier league promotion remains the target but will take it game after game.

“Promotion is still our target, but it is too early to talk much about that. We just want to take it game by game, the league is difficult and very long,” Ighalo told AfricanFootball.com.

The former Udinese forward was on target in the 29th minute to give his side a 2-1 lead. This was his second goal in four days and his third in the league this term. He was replaced with Ttoy Deeney in the 64th minute.

Super Eagles star,  Mikel Obi featured for ten minutes as Chelsea came from behind to defeat newly promoted side Burnley 3-1 away from home in their first game of the season.

Chelsea went behind in the first half as Scott Arfield rifled in a shoot that left Thibaut Courtois stranded but the Blues responded with two quick goals from new signing Diego Costa and German International Andre Schurrle.

Branislav Ivanovic sealed victory for Chelsea in the 34th minute with a simple finish from a Cesc Fabregas corner to make it 3-1 as the Blues top the EPL log.

Mikel’s compatriot Victor Moses was sent on a season long loan to Stoke City for the 2014-15 season but the former Lyn Oslo star preferred to stay and fight for his place amid transfer speculations.

  • EPL teams target Greensprings’ teen sensations

EPL teams target Greensprings’ teen sensations

For their exceptional display during the just concluded 2014 Warrior Keele International Football Cup, three top English Premier League (EPL) teams are now targeting Greensprings’ duo of Musa Alli and Elvis Onyenze.

Alli and Onyenze were part of the victorious Greensprings School team that won this year’s U-13 event of the Warrior Keele Cup and Alli was also named the best player of the tournament by the organisers.

Two of the EPL teams are former champions of the Premiership and they have all officially expressed their interest to engage the players.

After watching the players at the 2014 Warrior Keele Cup in Manchester last week, scouts from these teams were convinced that the two players are future stars that can be nurtured to stardom.  At the Keele tourney, Alli was adjudged the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament for his impressive performance.

According to Head of Sports, Greensprings School, Oluseyi Oyebode, the teams are willing to sign the players having officially expressed their interest in the players.

“I think the scouts from these EPL sides were convinced that the players are future materials for the EPL and they are willing to engage them in their youth teams,” Oyebode said.

Prior to the Keele Cup in United Kingdom (UK), Alli and Onyenze distinguished themselves at the football event of the African Youth Games (AYG) held in Gaborone, Botswana and their efforts ensured that Nigeria clinched gold in the event.

The players were products of public schools in Lagos Island, and through their conduct on and off the pitch during the annual Greensprings/Kanu Football Camp in 2013, the management of Greensprings School decided to award them scholarships to proceed with their studies.

After securing the scholarships to continue their education at Greensprings School, their fortunes on and off the pitch have changed positively.

As members of the team, they were outstanding and also contributed immensely to the success of Nigeria in Botswana.

Before the AYG in Botswana, Alli led the Lagos State team to the national U-13 championship in Abuja and his performance ensured that Lagos made it to the final before the team finally lost to Niger.

But the exceptional display of Alli was recognized and he was awarded the most valuable player (MVP) award of the competition.

Alli’s performance at the national U-13 tournament also earned him a call-up to the national during the build up to the AYG. Also, two new students- Murtala Toheeb and Haruna Hadi, who were awarded scholarships by Greensprings in 2014 made the team to the Keele Cup in UK.

Commenting on the feat achieved by Greensprings, Chairman, Lagos State Football Association, Seyi Akinwunmi said: “I have noted with pride the feat performed by our worthy ambassadors. I also acknowledge the great impact Greensprings School is having in the lives of the kids, some of whom have never travelled out of the country prior to this trip, I’m sure they will never forget it.

“I must say well done to the indefatigable Coach Oyebode and also finally a big thank you to our dear, Mrs. Lai Koiki, Director of the school, who always makes good things happen. A big congrats to Greensprings,” Akinwunmi said.
