Micha hails Equatorial Guinea after Guinea-Bissau rout

Equatorial Guinea coach Juan Micha applauded his side’s “complete performance” after thrashing Guinea-Bissau 4-2 at the Africa Cup of Nations yesterday.

A sensational Emilio Nsue hat-trick fired Equatorial Guinea to victory in the Group A clash, putting them on the verge of the knockout stage.

“I am very happy, we had a complete victory,” said Micha after the emphatic triumph in Abidjan.

“I want to congratulate my team, we played at a good level and won in satisfying fashion.”

The Nzalang Nacional boss said the players understood their responsibility to positively represent Equatorial Guinea on the big stage.

“I tell them we must behave well because we are the representatives of our country and have to give a good image,” Micha explained.

While pleased with the win, the manager stressed Equatorial Guinea can still improve ahead of facing hosts Cote d’Ivoire on Monday.

“We know it’s a big competition and we have to do better than what we are doing now,” Micha added.

The victory leaves Equatorial Guinea needing just a point against the hosts to book a spot in the last 16.

“We have one foot in the next round but will approach Ivory Coast with the same desire and intensity to win,” said Micha.

After this ruthless attacking display, Equatorial Guinea have emerged as unlikely contenders at AFCON 2023.

Nsue hat-trick fires Equatorial Guinea top of Group A

Emilio Nsue grabbed a sensational hat-trick as Equatorial Guinea defeated Guinea-Bissau 4-2 in their TotalEnergies CAF  Africa Cup of Nations Group A clash in Abidjan on Thursday.

After a cagey opening, Equatorial Guinea took the lead when Nsue pounced on a defensive error to slot home on 20 minutes.

But Guinea-Bissau hit back through an Esteban Orozco own goal forced by Franculino Dju’s pressure to level on 37 minutes.

The Nzalang Nacional retook the lead straight after half-time when Josete Miranda fired home following a long goal kick.

Nsue then punished more sloppy defending to bag his second on 51 minutes and sealed his hat-trick just after the hour mark with an emphatic finish.

Guinea-Bissau pulled one back deep in added time through Ze Turbo but it only served as a consolation.

Nsue became the first player to score a AFCON finals treble since Morocco’s Soufiane Alloudi against Namibia in 2008.

The thumping win fires Equatorial Guinea top of Group A on four points ahead of Cote d’Ivoire’s clash with Nigeria later on Thursday.

“This was a complete performance and gets our campaign back on track,” said Nzalang Nacional coach Juan Micha.

With one games remaining, Equatorial Guinea now stand on the brink of a second straight appearance in the AFCON knockout stage.

On this evidence, with star man Nsue in scintillating form, they have the firepower to concern any defence left in the tournament.

  • Super Falcons go goal crazy wallop Equatorial Guinea 6-0

Defending champions Super Falcons Saturday made mincemeat of Equatorial Guinea to formally hit the semifinals of the ongoing African Women Nations Cup in Ghana.

Falcons who hammered Shepolopolo 4-0 in the second group match again went goal crazy on Saturday completely tearing the Nzalang Nacional as the Equatorial Guinea girls are called apart.

The goal bazaar began as early as the 10th minute when Francisca Ordega put the Falcons ahead.  Asissat Oshoala who wasted begging chances in the match against Shepolopolo of Zambia in the second match, rediscovered her scoring boot grabbing a hatrick in a jiffy.

Desire Oparanozie and Rita Chikwelu grabbed a goal each to hand Falcons a 6-0 victory.  The rampaging Falcons appeared to have set a target at scoring 16 goals to spell Equatorial Guinea but ended up spelling Guinea.

The second match involving South Africa and Zambia ended in a 1-1 draw thus pushing hard fighting Shepolopolo to the exit door.  Nigeria will face Cameroon in the first Semifinal tie while South Africa will slug it out with Mali.

  • AFCON 2019: The stage is getting set

    Adeyinka Akintunde

Five out of twenty four nations have qualified for the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations billed to hold in Cameroon in June 2019, after match day four of the qualifying series.

The competition, which used to have sixteen teams battle for the big prize was expanded to accommodate twenty-four nations, after an Executive Committee meeting  of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on 20th July, 2017

The teams already qualified as it stands now are Cameroon (the hosts), Senegal, Madagascar, Tunisia and Egypt.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal and Madagascar both have ten points from four matches each, after winning three and drawing one game. The drawn game happened on 9th September 2018, at the Mahamasina Municipal Stadium, in Antananarivo, when both teams played out a 2-2 draw with Paulin Voavy and Koulibaly getting on the score sheet for the Barea, and Pape Moussa Konaté and Keita Diao scored one goal each for the Teranga Lions.

Both teams had in the process conquered Equatorial Guinea and Sudan to seal their place in Cameroon, Madagascar earning their place in the biggest football showpiece in Africa for the first time ever.

Senegal and Madagascar meet on the last match day, but that will only be a formality.

Tunisia and Egypt also had an easy ride in Group J, Egypt whitewashing Niger Republic 6-0 in Alexandria, Swaziland 4-1 in Cairo, and 2-0 in Manzini. Tunisia on their part beat Swaziland 2-0 in Manzini, Niger Republic 1-0 In Rades, and visited Niamey to conquer them 2-1.

The Egyptian Pharaohs only tasted defeat when they travelled to Rades to face Tunisia, and the Carthage Eagles piped them 1-0, Taha Yassine Khenissi finding the net, two minutes into the second half.

Both sides meet again in Egypt next month, and it will be a battle of who finishes top of the group.

In Cameroon’s group, things are slightly different, being the host of the coming Africa Cup of Nations . It turns out that three teams from that group will be at the AFCON, with only one losing out. If the Indomitable Lions finish first, then the second and third advance, and if second, the first and third will make it.

As things stands, after match day four, Morocco and Malawi are at advantage, with Cameroon, leading with eight points, Morocco with seven, and Malawi with four points. Comoros only has two points so far.

The road is still rough in other places, though some teams are very close to qualification. Countries like Algeria, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Guinea are one win away from qualification for AFCON 2019. A point can do the magic for Guinea, provided Ivory Coast fails to win their remaining matches. It is safe to conclude that a great cracker awaits on 16th November, when Guinea hosts Cote d’Ivoire. It should be recalled that the Syli Nationale won the first leg in Bouake in June, 2017

In Group E Seychelles is out of the race, as there is still a slim chance for Libya to make it through. Mathematically, a win against Seychelles in November, and and at least a draw against South Africa at home will guarantee a place for the Mediterranean Knights, provided South Africa fails to win any of their remaining fixtures. Nigeria on their part need a  point from the available six to seal their place in Cameroon.

There is still all to play for in Group C, where Mali, Gabon and Burundi have eight, seven and six points respectively. Group D sees Algeria, Benin Republic struggle with seven points each, and Togo has five, Group G, seeing Zimbabwe in eight points, DR Congo with five, Congo and Liberia with four points each. Zimbabwe visits Liberia on match day five, before hosting Congo on the last match day.

Group I is dicey. Mauritania, also seeking its first appearance at the finals currently has nine points, its only loss against Angola, in Luanda, Burkina Faso has seven points, Angola has six points, and already eliminated Botswana has one point.  And Group K has former African Champions, Zambia, sitting at the bottom of the group with four points, but still having a chance, as Guinea Bissau and Namibia have seven points respectively, and Mozambique has four.  The Chipolopolo, who had a 2-1 victory and defeat to Guinea Bissau within four days, will visit Mozambique, before they host Namibia, knowing what destiny holds for them.

  • Buhari, Equatorial Guinea President meet in Aso Rock

Buhari, Equatorial Guinea President meet in Aso Rock

*Equatorial Guinea President seeks dialogue as solution to African problems

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met with Equatorial Guinea President, Theodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

At the end of the closed doors meeting, Equatorial Guinea President, advocated for dialogue as the solution to the myriad of crises plaguing various countries in West African sub-region.

Speaking with State House journalists, he said that he came to visit Buhari to know about the state of his health in view of the health crisis he went through for the better part of last year.

Stressing that the visit was also in line with a maxim that when a fellow person is down, it is the responsibility of persons around him to seek his wellbeing, he said that he was glad to see the President looking hail and healthy.

He also congratulated Buhari for giant strides in the fight against Boko Haram, which he said had caused a great havoc which had spread to some other West African countries including Chad and Cameroon.

According to him, through Buhari’s committed fight against Boko Haram, the insurgent group is almost eliminated but for pockets of attacks still being carried out by the insurgents.

“One of the salient issues in the meeting was that l congratulated our dear brother for the great fight against Boko Haram. We realised that Boko Haram had caused a great havoc that had been carried all over the sub-region including Chad and Cameroon. He is doing a great job. He’s almost eradicating the menace of Boko Haram apart from pockets of attacks here and there,” he said.

Mbasogo, who spoke in Spanish, aided by an interpreter, said the meeting also discussed security concerns in the neighbouring West African countries.

He said that he and Buhari considered the need to work together with a view to securing a common ground for development and cooperation to achieve desired goals.

The President who also narrated how his country had been a victim of varying security crises orchestrated by some terrorists from Chad and Sudan in collaboration with a group of deviants from France, disclosed that his decision to promptly reach out to Cameroon helped to put the situation under control.

Narrating how the country became a victim of the first coup d’etat in 2004, Mbasogo said through the cooperation of neighbouring countries, the coup plotters were apprehended and imprisoned for several years until the government opted to pardon and free them.

On the plan of West African leaders on the crisis which broke out in Southern Cameroon and resulted in the influx of refugees into Nigeria, Mbasogo said there is no country without its own peculiar crisis.

According to him, it only behoves on parties concerned to put heads together and embrace dialogue as the platform for solution to the crisis.

“Cameroon is a big nation whose crisis requires the concern of all forces. There is no nation without its own crisis. What is required is to seek solution through dialogue and use it to find a common axis. Those seeking refuge in other lands need to sit down together and find solution through dialogue. It is only through that, they can find solution to the crisis,” he said.

On the challenge of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, Mbasogo who said the pirates were destroying and sabotaging Nigeria’s development effort in the area, also advocated dialogue as solution to the crisis.

“On piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, the pirates are destroying and sabotaging the property of Nigeria. The government of Nigeria cannot develop the area. What is warming therefore is to expect the government of Nigeria to bring the parties to dialogue for a solution to the crisis.

“In Equatorial Guinea, we feel concerned. We all need to put our hands on deck to ensure that there is security in all regions. We have to develop our nations and we can only do so under peace and harmony,” he said.

  • Djibloho… emerging city in the jungle of Equatorial Guinea

Djibloho… emerging city in the jungle of Equatorial Guinea

Olalekan Okusan, was recently in Equatorial Guinea. In this travelogue, he explores the Central African nation, particularly the new capital – Djibloho, which is well on its way to becoming the first African technology driven city.

Just before I was billed to resume at work after a well-deserved vacation, my trip to Equatorial Guinea was the last thing I did. I got just a few hours’ notice with a call from one of Nigeria’s top golfers, Willy Gift, who informed me that the organisers had decided to include me on the trip. I was able to make it to the Lagos airport on time but the delay by one of the local airlines kept us at the airport for hours.

When we finally jetted out to Port Harcourt, the trip was smooth. However, my joy was quenched on getting to Port Harcourt with the usual begging style of airport officials who are fond of cajoling you to part with money whenever you are travelling out. But after completing the formalities, we boarded the Cronos Airline heading to Malabo.

The journey to Malabo from Port Harcourt only lasted for less than 40 minutes and on getting to Malabo we completed the visa requirements on arrival before heading to Bata where we then proceeded to Djibloho for another three-hour journey by road.

I met and interviewed Olawale Opayinka, a Nigerian, whose ingenuity is driving the tourism potential of Equatorial Guinea. For five years, Opayinka through his firm, 3e Actuaries, has organised the annual 3e Actuaries Golf Open in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea. The tournament, which has continued to grow each year, can boast of assembling more than 100 professional golfers drawn from across the globe, with a prize-money of $250,000 this year.

On arriving at Djibloho, we were welcomed by Opayinka who is the tournament host at the Grand Hotel Djibloho. I would get to know later that the warmness with which he welcomed us at the hotel reception was the natural style and character of the Oyo State-born businessman.

Apart from his warm hospitality, I was really impressed with the organization. The list of expected visitors was already posted at the reception and everyone knew their room numbers without any prompting, there was a designated hotel staff who later handed the room keys to us, and shepherded us to our various rooms within ten minutes of arrival.

Having traversed the globe in the last one decade, this was one of the smoothest and most effective logistical arrangements I had encountered, and it gave me a good idea of how organized the overall tournament would be.

It would be unforgiveable not to mention about the grand opulence of the Grand Hotel Djibloho. Being my first time in that hotel, particularly the 50 square-meters spacious rooms filled me with a sense of awe.

    Taste of the new city

According to Wikipedia, Oyala is a city in Equatorial Guinea that is being built to replace Malabo as the national capital. Established as an urban district in Wele-Nzas in 2015, it is now the administrative headquarters of Djibloho, Equatorial Guinea’s newest province was created in 2017, and is located near the town of Mengomeyén. In 2017, the city was officially renamed Ciudad de la Paz (“City of Peace”).

The location of Djibloho, which is a planned city, was chosen for its easy access and conducive weather. It was designed by a Portuguese studio for architecture and urbanism, FAT – Future Architecture Thinking. The city is projected to have around 200,000 inhabitants, a new Congress building, a number of presidential villas and an area of 8150 hectares. The construction of this new capital has been criticised by the political opposition to President Teodoro Obiang, who was the driving force behind the initiative. The government of Equatorial Guinea temporarily moved to Oyala in early 2017.

Djibloho is surrounded by several national parks and is not far from the eastern border with Gabon. The city, which has been several years in the making, includes a five-star hotel, a championship golf course, a conference centre and a university.

Located on the Wele-Nzas, the new capital city was built in order to fulfil the President’s dream, which is that the concept city is characterised by modernity and respect by the country’s cultural roots, optimizing its identity and the richness of the ecosystem where it belongs. It is projected that the new capital city will attract an estimated 160,000 inhabitants and will extend for 8,150 Hectares.

Djibloho is characterised by the dense equatorial forest that surrounds it and by the strong presence of the river Wele. The Administrative Area consists of the Presidential Palace and Presidential Guards, along with the Government Ministries, the Parliament and the Supreme Court culminating at Av. de la Paz (Peace Av.) and a wide garden.

    Hotel of grandeur and allure

The beautiful Grand Hotel Djibloho is one of the big attractions in the new city. According to the hotel’s General Manager, Vincenzo Presti; the edifice can rival any seven-star hotel in the world.

“The Grand Hotel Djibloho is a masterpiece of the International Hotel Industry with great finishing done by the construction company Piccini Construction from Perugi in Italy. Honestly, in 39 years of my career in the hotel business, I have never seen a hotel which offers various kinds of services to any kind of tourists.”

Speaking on the importance of the hotel to the government, Presti explained, “The hotel was sited in Djibloho because the city will be the future administrative capital of Equatorial Guinea and the government wanted to have something more than a normal deluxe five-star hotel. This is why they built the Grand Hotel Djibloho.”

The eight days I spent in the city would forever be memorable and this has confirmed the potential that abound in Africa. For tourists willing to have fun in a quiet and beautiful environment, Djibloho is indeed a place to be.
