  • OPEC oil output rises in May as cut-exempt Nigeria, Libya pump more

OPEC oil output rises in May as cut-exempt Nigeria, Libya pump more

OPEC oil output rose in May, the first monthly increase this year, a Reuters survey found on Wednesday, as higher supply from two OPEC states exempt from a production-cutting deal, Nigeria and Libya, offset improved compliance with the accord by others.

According to Reuters surveys, a drop in output in Angola and Iraq and continued high compliance from Gulf producers Saudi Arabia and Kuwait helped lift OPEC’s adherence with the supply cut deal to 95 per cent from 90 per cent in April.

OPEC pledged to reduce output by about 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) for six months from Jan. 1, 2018 as part of a deal with Russia and other non-members.

Oil prices has gained some ground but an inventory glut and rising supply by outside producers has kept prices below the 60 dollars a barrel that Saudi Arabia wants.

A sustained output rise from Libya and Nigeria poses further challenges.

To provide additional support for prices, the producers decided at a meeting last week to prolong the deal until March 2018.

They discussed whether to include Nigeria in the output cap but decided against for now, OPEC delegates said.

Nigeria and Libya were exempted because their output has been curbed by conflict.

However, supplies from both nations staged a partial recovery in May, lifting overall OPEC output by 250,000 bpd to 32.22 million bpd.

The biggest increase came from Nigeria, where the Forcados production stream began loading cargoes for export.

The Forcados pipeline had been mostly shut since it was bombed by militants in February 2016.

In Libya, the state oil firm said output had reached 827,000 bpd on Wednesday, around levels last seen in 2014. But production is still half the 1.60 million bpd Libya pumped before the 2011 civil war.

While the exempt nations pumped more, those bound by output targets boosted compliance.

Adherence by OPEC with the deal has been higher than in the past, reaching a record according to the International Energy Agency and other analysts.

Angolan supply showed the largest decline due to fewer scheduled exports after a jump in April. Iraq exported slightly less crude from its southern terminals, the survey found.

Saudi Arabia pumped more although its compliance was the second-highest in OPEC. Even with May’s increase, the total curb achieved by OPEC’s top producer Saudi Arabia is 564,000 bpd, well above the target cut of 486,000 bpd.

Output in Iran and the United Arab Emirates was steady. Iran was allowed a small increase in the OPEC agreement and, having sold the oil it had held in floating storage, appears to have reached a short-term peak.

The UAE, with lower compliance than other Gulf producers, has said suggestions that it is failing to comply fully can be explained by the gap between its own figures and those estimated by the secondary sources that OPEC uses to track compliance.

OPEC announced a production target of 32.50 million bpd at its Nov. 30 meeting, which was based on low figures for Libya and Nigeria and included Indonesia, which has since left.

No new target was announced last week to reflect this change or the addition of Equatorial Guinea, which OPEC said on May 25 joined the group with “immediate effect.” The country will be added to the Reuters survey from June.

The Libyan and Nigerian increases mean OPEC output in May averaged 32.22 million bpd, about 470,000 bpd above its supply target, adjusted to remove Indonesia and not including Equatorial Guinea.

The Reuters survey is based on shipping data provided by external sources, Thomson Reuters flows data, and information provided by sources at oil companies, OPEC and consulting firms.

Trial of Equatorial Guinea leader’s son postponed

A French court on Wednesday postponed the corruption trial of the son of Equatorial Guinea’s president until June 19, bringing proceedings to a halt two days after they had begun.

The lawyer for Teodorin Obiang had asked for the hearing to be suspended on the grounds that his client, who was summoned to trial three weeks ago, had not been given enough time to prepare his defence in a complex case.

Obiang, eldest son of President Teodoro Obiang and a vice-president of Equatorial Guinea, is accused of buying palatial Parisian properties and exotic cars with money plundered from his country, a small oil-rich state on Africa’s west coast.

Obiang has not appeared in France to answer the charges of laundering embezzled public funds, which expose him to a sentence of 10 years in jail and big fines if convicted.

The case is the first of several to reach court in a broader judicial investigation into allegations of illicit acquisitions in France by long-time leaders and family relatives in several African countries including Gabon and Congo Republic.

*Vows to deal with violence sponsors

*Says new national airline not his priority

*Says anti-graft war will be merciless

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Malabo condemned recent political violence in Rivers State.

According to him, killing of people over political differences was primitive, barbaric and unacceptable.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said: “We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have given the security services clear directives in this regard.

“We will show that violence in any form will no longer be tolerated before, during or after elections,” the President said at an interactive meeting with Nigerians resident in Equatorial Guinea.

President Buhari said that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be encouraged to explore the possibility of Nigerians abroad voting in the 2019 general elections.

Noting that some African countries have started allowing their citizens resident abroad to vote in national elections, the President said that he fully empathized with the desire of Nigerians in the Diaspora to vote in national elections.

He said that he will therefore do all within his power to fulfil that desire.

“I want all Nigerians to know that I respect them and their right to choose their leaders,” he said

The President also said that establishing a new national airline was not currently on the Federal Government’s list of priorities.

He said that his administration’s main area of focus now was reducing the level of poverty in the country.

The President said that developing the infrastructure needed to boost production in all sectors of the economy and creating more jobs for young Nigerians, and other actions that will directly improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians will continue to be prioritized by his administration.

President Buhari was responding to complaints by members of the Nigerian community about the absence of direct flights between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

He assured them that his administration’s war against corruption will remain “fearless, relentless and merciless”.

“We will be merciless and relentless in pursuing all those who abused public trust. Nigerians will see how some of the elite conspired to run the nation down,” he said.

Buhari receives highest honour in Equatorial Guinea

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday night received in Malabo Equatorial Guinea’s highest national honour, the Grand Collar of the Order of the Independence.

He has dedicated it to the people of Nigeria, who, he said, have worked tirelessly for peace in the country and Africa.

Buhari in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said: “I will like to express profound gratitude for the honour given to me and my people.

“There has never been a time for greater neighbourliness on our continent in the interest of peace, security and economic stability than now,” President Buhari said at the investiture ceremony.

As African countries faced common challenges, he said, they must strive to cooperate more to find workable solutions that will facilitate rapid socio-economic development on the continent.

Buhari pledged that under his leadership, Nigeria will continue to make significant contributions to peace, political stability and progress in Africa.

President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea said that the honour was conferred on President Buhari for his “personal integrity, exemplary leadership style and courage to fight terrorism in order to ensure peace and safety in Africa”.

“We deemed it fit and appropriate to honour this son of Africa for the great work he is doing, which includes tackling Boko Haram, a great menace to the continent,” President Mbasogo said.

  • NFF seeks German model for Nigeria

NFF seeks German model for Nigeria

The Nigeria Football Federation is seeking to forge closer links with Germany in an attempt to revive the country’s soccer fortunes and hasten the national team’s development, the federation’s president, Amaju Pinnick, said on Tuesday.

NFF wants to send coaches to German clubs and model Nigeria’s senior league on the Bundesliga, which it considers “the top model league in the universe,” as part of a plan to take Nigerian football to a new level, Reuters says.

“Germany is not only the reigning champions of the world in football, it is also a very strong economic power,” Reuters quoted NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, as saying on the NFF website (www.thenff.com) following a meeting between federation delegates and Germany’s ambassador to Nigeria, Dietmar Kreusel.

“We keenly desire to partner with the DFB (German Football Federation) and the German League. The NFF is presently doing a lot in the area of development of the game in Nigeria.

“Now we are requesting support for our developmental programmes for women’s football, as well as capacity building for our referees and coaches,” Pinnick added.

Among requests made by delegates to the ambassador were better procedures for securing visas for NFF executives into Germany for football programmes.

Nigeria, once the powerhouse of African football, has endured a tough few years in international competition.

Ranked 10th globally in 2006, the country is now 57th in the FIFA world rankings – its lowest since 1999.

In last year’s World Cup, the Super Eagles reached the round of 16 for the first time since 1998 before losing to France.

After winning the African Nations Cup in 2013, the three-time African champions failed to qualify for this year’s finals in Equatorial Guinea.

  • Equatorial Guinea 1-1 Congo

    Equatorial Guinea 1-1 Congo

E milio Nsue emerged the man of the match after his performance almost secured Equatorial Guinea a winning start to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations yesterday.

The 25-year-old Middlesbrough player opened the scoring in the 16th minute after a great assist from Kike Boula, but his goal was cancelled out late in the game by the Red Devils’ Thievy Bifouma.

In between, Nsue worked tirelessly up front for the hosts and should have been awarded a second goal in the 74th minute when he latched onto a long ball over the defence and successfully lobbed on-rushing goalkeeper Chris Mafoumbi, only to be incorrectly denied by the offside flag.

He also set up Javier Balboa with a glorious chance just past the hour mark, but Nzalang Nacional’s number 11 failed to beat the Congolese goalkeeper.

  • Bifouma breaks Equatorial Guinea hearts

    Bifouma breaks Equatorial Guinea hearts

The opening match of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations ended 1-1 between hosts Equatorial Guinea and Congo in Bata yesterday.

Nzalang Nacional went ahead in the first half through Emilio Nsue, but the Red Devils fought back to claim a share of the spoils in this Group A clash thanks to a late equaliser from Thievy Bifouma.

Equatorial Guinea started the game strongly, with Kike Boula, Javier Balboa, Iban Edu and Emilio Nsue putting on a display of skill and speed in the final third.

Kike’s superb footwork down the right flank created the opening goal in the 16th minute, with the winger skipping past a defender before playing a perfectly weighted through ball that allowed Nsue to fire a low shot past goalkeeper Chris Mafoumbi.

Congo created chances of their own, most notably when Thievy Bafouma had a low shot from a tight angle that forced a good save from Felipe Ovono, while the hosts’ goalkeeper also missed a floated cross from a free kick but was lucky to see Marvin Baudry head into the side netting.

The Red Devils enjoyed plenty of ball possession as the first half wore on, but they lacked the pace and penetration to really trouble Nzalang Nacional’s defence, which was marshalled by the excellent Rui da Garcia.

Congo substitute Ladislas Douniama almost brought his side level with a curling shot from the edge of the box midway through the second half, but Ovono produced an excellent finger-tip save to turn the ball around the post for a corner.

Equatorial Guinea thought they had wrapped up the game when Balboa’s ball over the defence allowed Nsue to lob the on-rushing goalkeeper and find the back of the net, but the attacker was incorrectly flagged offside by the referee’s assistant.

They were nearly punished in the 83rd minute when Francis N’Gonga’s free kick came back off the upright, and on 87 minutes Congo’s relentless pressure was finally rewarded when Bifouma finished off a through ball from substitute Dominique Malonga to make it 1-1.

Equatorial Guinea next face Burkina Faso, while Congo will take on Gabon. The second round matches will be played in Bata on January 21.

  • Equatorial Guinea to host AFCON 2015

Equatorial Guinea will host next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF announced this Friday through their Twitter account.

Earlier, French newspaper L’Equipe on Friday reported 2012 Nations Cup co-hosts Equatorial Guinea will host the 2015 AFCON from January 17 to February 8 in place of Morocco, who were disqualified after they maintained the competition be shifted to a later date because of the outbreak of Ebola, which has killed over 5,000 people in West Africa.

They quoted sources in Equatorial Guinea for this information.

CAF president Issa Hayatou is expected in Malabo Friday to finalise arrangements with the government of Equatorial Guinea.

He has promised to name a new host for the continental showpiece event this week.

The oil-rich island has also hosted the African Women’s Championship in 2012.
