  • Everton delay Iwobi’s debut hold Palace at Selhurst Park

Everton resisted the temptation to launch their latest new buy Alex Iwobi into the season opener against Crystal Palace on Saturday.  Iwobi who joined the Toffees in the last minute of transfers for £35million was conspicuously missing from the Everton’s line up away against Crystal Palace.

The Nigerian international who has already been handed the No.17 Shirt will have to wait till next Saturday when Everton host Watford at the Goodison Park to make the much awaited debut.

Iwobi who was given thumbs up by former club Arsenal for contributing immensely to the successes recorded by the club in his over 15 years sojourn at the Emirates is being tipped to help fire the Toffees to the top four at the end of the season.

The 23 year old may be tempted to replicate what his uncle and former Nigeria international jay Jay Okocha did for Bolton Wanderers when he joined on free transfer from PSG in 2002. He shunned injury worries then worked so hard to steer the team away from relegation.

Bolton fans were so impressed with his performance that the team printed shirts with inscription “Jay-Jay – so good they named him twice”.  He scored crucial seven goals including the team goal of the season in the vital league win against West Ham.

Everton put up a good show against hosts Crystal Palace on Saturday earning a point away to begin their quest for glory on a good footing.

In one of the opening matches played Saturday, premier league defending champions Manchester City made mincemeat of West Ham United thanks to a 5-0 demolition with Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero having goal feast.

Liverpool, who missed the premier league title by whiskers last season, opened proceedings on Friday with a 4-1 defeat of new comers Norwich City.

  • BREAKING! Everton ready to dole out N13.2billion for Alex Iwobi

Will Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi be interested in moving over to Goodison Park, and will Arsenal indeed be ready to let go of their boyhood player? That is debate among teeming Gunners fans after Everton tabled £30million (about (N13.2billion) , for his services.

Everton who finished 8th on the log last season are desirous of fighting for a place in the top four and reportedly believe that the Nigeria international who was impressive at the last Nations cup in Egypt despite Super Eagles’ third place finish can help them achieve the dream.

The Marco Silva tutored side have prior to this time been pursuing Ivorian

international and Crystal Palace ace Wilfred Zaha but received a capital no from Palace who are not interested in losing any of their star players ahead of the new season, forcing The Toffees to shift attention to Iwobi.

Iwobi netted six goals last season and provided nine assists and there is no indication that the Gunners are not enjoying his contributions.

The Emirate landlords have never at any time indicated that they are ready to show escort their man to the exit door but some fans worry that the cash on the table may force a reconsideration especially with Arsenal coach Unai Emery reportedly seeking funds  to  beef up in defence.

No official response has been dished out by the Gunners neither has 23 year old Iwobi who is successfully flying what could pass for a family flag in football  after the exploits of his uncle and former Nigeria midfield maestro Jay jay Okocha reacted to the development.

Some fans who reacted following the news break say it will pay the Nigerian to remain at Arsenal in their own words “With a club that is sure to play either in Europa or Champions league every year and not one that has taken permanent position in the middle of the log”

  • I am the right man for Manchester United – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is the right man to lead Manchester United’s revival despite a worrying dip in form that has threatened their top four hopes.

United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday on the back of six defeats in eight games including a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

“I would like to say I am but it’s not down to me to say that,” Solskjaer told a news conference on Tuesday.

“I’m confident in my team and myself to take this challenge on. It’s a big challenge and when I came in here I said I’m going to enjoy every single second. I don’t like losing but it’s a challenge when you go through bad results.”

Paul Pogba has branded Manchester United’s performance at Everton as “disrespectful” to all involved on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side crashed to a 4-0 defeat at Goodison Park and the Frenchman did not hold back in his assessment of his, and the team’s, display.

“Losing a game is something really bad that we don’t want to [do] when we are in the race for the top four and losing 4-0 as well.

“Not to be disrespectful and I am not disrespectful on Everton, but the way we played and the performance of myself, of the team, of everyone is disrespectful. We didn’t respect ourselves, the club or the fans.

“I don’t want to be harsh with my words but we don’t want to look like we did because the body language was not good enough for this shirt.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said afterwards the performance of some players at Everton had been “embarrassing” while Solskjaer questioned whether they cared enough to represent the club.

Pogba revealed part of what the Norwegian had to say to the squad after the final whistle with the 26-year-old admitting the players were “angry with themselves.”

“We let the manager speak, the staff speaks and they spoke the truth,” he said.

“They said what happened in the game and it is not respectful for ourselves.

“What we did on the pitch is not respectful for the teammates, for the staff, for the people, for the kitman, for everyone.

“For their work, they put their life on us, the team and this club. What we showed on the pitch, we did not give them the joy back and that’s why we are angry with ourselves.

“We want to do better for sure and we have to. The reaction has to be there.”

United have the chance to put things right on Wednesday when title-chasing Manchester City visit Old Trafford.

Solskjaer and a selection of players apologized to the travelling fans at Goodison Park and Pogba insisted he would say sorry with a full-blooded performance in the derby.

“The only way to apologize to them is to give everything on the pitch, do our best, create chances, score goals, defend, work for the team and we can even lose games, but with a good performance and pride on the pitch,” said Pogba.

“That’s how we should apologize to the fans, just to give everything for us, for the club, for the shirt, for the teammates and for ourselves as well because it is us on the pitch and we cannot perform like we did.”

New York Red Bulls manager sporting director Denis Hamlett said rumors that Thierry Henry would take over as club manager are “false.”

In a brief statement released on Monday, Hamlett said: “Recent reports of Thierry Henry joining the New York Red Bulls are false.”

Unconfirmed reports over the last week have hinted that Henry, 41, would take over the reins at his former MLS club.

Red Bulls, under manager Chris Armas, have endured a difficult start to the season. After finishing top of the Eastern Conference last season, the club sits at 11th in the standings and have lost four for their first seven games.

After serving as assistant manager for Belgium at the 2018 World Cup, Henry had a disastrous three-month tenure at former club Monaco, winning four out of 20 games while in charge.

The ex-Arsenal and Barcelona striker played for NYRB from 2010-2014, scoring 51 goals in 122 MLS appearances.

  • Everton hit four in win over Manchester United

Everton have heaped further misery on Manchester United by registering a dominant 4-0 victory over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in Sunday’s Premier League at Goodison Park.

Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott all got on the scoresheet as Everton moved into seventh position in the standings, while United remain in sixth place after a third top-flight defeat in five matches.

Both Marco Silva and Solskjaer would have demanded a positive response after poor peformances over the past eight days, but it was Everton who completely dominated the opening 45 minutes.

David de Gea made a terrific save to keep out a close-range volley from Richarlison, but the United goalkeeper was powerless to prevent the Brazilian from handing Everton the lead two minutes later.

A long throw was headed on by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Richarlison reacted fastest to send a scissor kick into the roof of De Gea’s net after beating Diogo Dalot to the ball.

United almost found an equaliser when Marcus Rashford fired narrowly over from 15 yards out, but it was a rare moment of joy for the visitors as they failed to get to grips with Everton in all departments.

The Toffees’ second goal arrived when Sigurdsson was provided with too much space by Victor Lindelof, and the Iceland international capitalised by drilling a low 25-yard strike into De Gea’s right-hand bottom corner.

Everton maintained control of the contest without building on their second goal, although Richarlison did have a speculative effort from distance saved by De Gea at his near post.

Solskjaer – almost inevitably – made changes at the break with Ashley Young and Scott McTominay being introduced into the action, but Everton were also forced into an alteration when Richarlison was unable to shake off an injury to his ribs.

United were doing their best to find a way into the contest, but Everton netted their third before the hour mark as Digne fired a low volley through a pack of players into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Sigurdsson soon went close to adding a fourth when his corner had to be cleared off the line by De Gea, but it was not long before the home side further extended their advantage.

Walcott was sent clear of the United defence down the left flank, and the substitute was able to drift inside before slotting a low shot under De Gea from eight yards out.

Everton continued to push for goals during the closing quarter of the game, but United twice went close to consolation efforts with Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic failing to hit the target from the centre of the penalty area.

Martial also had a long-range strike kept out by Jordan Pickford but any goal for Solskjaer’s side would have been harsh on Everton, who have now registered 10 points from home fixtures with Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and United.

  • Jagielka scores as Everton beat Arsenal 1-0

Phil Jagielka scored the only goal of the match as Everton recorded a 1-0 win over Arsenal in Sunday afternoon’s Premier League clash at Goodison Park.

The victory is Everton’s third in a row in the league, while Arsenal’s poor away form has continued.

The Gunners remain fourth in the Premier League table, but are vulnerable to fifth-placed Chelsea and sixth-placed Manchester United as the battle for the Champions League positions intensifies.

Arsenal had a good chance to register in the first two minutes when Alexandre Lacazette broke into a dangerous position before feeding Mesut Ozil, but eventually Everton managed to clear their lines after a period of panic.

It was the home side that made the breakthrough in the 10th minute, though, and it came from a player who was not originally due to start.

Indeed, Jagielka was a late introduction after Michael Keane was taken ill ahead of kickoff and the experienced centre-back converted from close range after Arsenal had failed to deal with a corner kick.

Andre Gomes tried his luck for Everton in the 16th minute as the home side looked to double their advantage, but the on-loan midfielder’s effort was always moving wide of the post.

The Gunners have still not kept a single away clean sheet in the Premier League this season and looked capable of shipping more goals at Goodison as the team in blue continued to throw players forward.

Idrissa Gueye was next to try his luck for Marco Silva’s side in the 25th minute, but his strike was always moving wide of the Arsenal post.

Gylfi Sigurdsson then struck into the arms of Bernd Leno in the 37th minute after the Iceland international found all sorts of space in the gap between Arsenal’s midfield and three centre-backs.

Gomes was running the show for the Toffees in the middle of the park, with Arsenal struggling to get hold of the ball and the two teams headed down the tunnel at the interval with Jagielka’s goal the difference.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey both came off the Arsenal bench at the break and the latter had a wonderful chance to level the scores early in the second period. Indeed, the ball fell for the Wales international in a dangerous position, but he somehow missed the target.

  • Jagielka scores for Everton to dent Arsenal’s hopes

Arsenal’s hopes of a top-four finish in the English Premier League (EPL) were dented on Sunday as Everton captain Phil Jagielka took advantage of an unexpected late recall.

The veteran defender scored the winner in a dominant 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.

Jagielka, who was brought into the team for a rare appearance after Michael Keane had to withdraw in the warm-up through illness, scored after 10 minutes.

His goal earned his side well-deserved third straight league win.

It marked a significant setback for a disappointing Arsenal, who remain fourth in the table but missed an opportunity to leap ahead of their third-placed north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Unai Emery’s side stay on 63 points, one behind Spurs, level with fifth-placed Chelsea and two clear of Manchester United in an increasingly tight battle for the UEFA Champions League berths.

The experienced Jagielka proved Everton’s unlikely hero after his late call-up.

He became the oldest goalscorer in the league this season at 36 years 233 days when he poked home his finish after Arsenal failed to clear Lucas Digne’s long throw.

The ball had fallen kindly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the final touch on to him in the aerial battle, allowing Jagielka to score his first league goal in two years.

He also became Everton’s second-oldest marksman in the Premier League era.

“I’m not normally a match-winner, full stop,” laughed the former England defender. “They’re the best goals, the little tap-ins from two or three yards.”

His goal signalled a hungry and aggressive display from Everton who, while moving up to ninth on 46 points, could have won far more convincingly.

That is if Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison had converted any of the side’s 23 attempts on goal.

“We got one goal but could have scored a few more,” added Jagielka.

He earned special praise from delighted Everton manager Marco Silva, who said: “He was to start on the bench, but showed how he is a good professional and prepares himself for what the coach and team needs.

“He is always ready to help the team.”

Arsenal, who have conceded at least one goal in every league away match this season, came closest with one curling second-half effort from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

But they were outplayed and outfought by Silva’s team.

They had only two attempts on target in the whole match.

And, with Mesut Ozil failing to offer much inspiration as captain for the day, they endured one of their more frustrating lack lustre away days.

Arsenal’s frustration became obvious when the two managers were involved in a brief confrontation in the second half.

“The football is emotional. He wants the best for his team. I want the best for mine. At the end we spoke together and everything is normal,” said Silva.

Arsenal boss Emery felt his team would have to rebound swiftly as they prepared to face Napoli in a UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday.

“It was not a good result today but we are still fourth,” said the Spaniard. “We lost and we need to get up quickly and find the next step.”(Reuters/NAN)

  • Liverpool denied top spot by Everton

Liverpool played out a goalless draw with Merseyside rivals Everton  yesterday to miss out on the chance to return to the top of the Premier League.

The Reds required victory to move back above Manchester City following the Citizens’ 1-0 win over Bournemouth yesterday, but they fired another blank – their third stalemate in four matches in all competitions, two of those coming in their faltering top-flight run-in.

Mohamed Salah wasted the best chance of the contest in the first half, being denied by Jordan Pickford when through on goal, meaning that Liverpool’s title hopes are no longer in their own hands.

Liverpool enjoyed the better of the rare first-half opportunities, with Salah testing Pickford with a curler from the edge of the box before wasting his glorious opportunity just before the half-hour mark.

The Egyptian forward was played through on goal by a long pass from Fabinho, but he was unable to open up his body and Pickford stuck out a strong hand to keep the ball out.

The loose ball fell nicely for returning skipper Jordan Henderson to strike, but his shot was blocked in front of goal as two chances in the space of five seconds went begging.

Everton’s attacking players were feeding off scraps for large parts of the first half, though they did create half a chance shortly before the interval when Theo Walcott, played onside by Joel Matip, burst through and fired a powerful shot over the crossbar.

The previous two Merseyside derbies in the Premier League had also been goalless at half time, and memories of Liverpool’s late winner in the reverse meeting remained fresh in the memory.

Both goalkeepers were tested in the opening 10 minutes of the second half as Alisson Becker shifted across to his right to keep out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s downward header and Pickford got behind Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long-range free kick.

  • Gomes helps Everton reach £100,000 mark in mental health campaign

Andre Gomes has taken time to help Everton pass the £100,000 mark as they aim to raise £1million as part of a mental health fundraising campaign.

The Toffees may have struggled in recent weeks to excite their supporters on the pitch, with Marco Silva’s side sitting 11th after only two wins in their last 10 Premier League games.

But their on-loan midfielder is still determined to spread some goodwill around Merseyside.

The 25-year-old held a charity hug-a-thon at Goodison Park, where more than 200 Blues queued up for an embrace with the Portugal star.

The event took place the day after Blue Monday, supposedly the most depressing day on the calendar.

But there were smiles across the faces of the hundreds of Blues supporters – of all ages – who had made a donation to charity to meet the midfielder.

The money is going towards The People’s Place, a mental health facility close to Goodison Park, which offers support to those in need.

  • Silva: Everton were too nervous

Marco Silva says Everton were “too nervous” as they lost 1-0 to Leicester on New Year Day, but added there was no reason for it.

Everton’s bad run of form continued as Jamie Vardy’s 58th-minute strike handed Leicester the victory, with the Toffees having now won just one of their last eight league fixtures.

Silva was critical of his side, calling it a “poor performance” and adding they were too nervous, although could not give an excuse as to why.

He told Sky Sports: “It was a disappointing result and a poor performance to be honest. We always have to be honest and we have to look clearly at the game and analyse the match calmly and to pass the feedback back to our boys.

“It was poor from the first minute and we knew before the match what they came here to do. It is easy to understand like they started the game they were playing 4-5-1, blocking the space and waiting for our mistakes. In the first half, we were in control and every time we had the ball and wanted to start something, we were too nervous without reason.

“Of course, when you’re playing that way, it is easy to lose easy passes and easy combinations and every time we win the ball and start to organise our attack, we lose. We tried, we lose and then the game gets a little bit confused. When you are so anxious in the game, after comes the easy mistakes like we made.

“For the goal, we conceded a counter-attack with Jamie Vardy with a normal ball that is normal to control because we didn’t handle the normal pressure in a normal football game this afternoon. We will find the reasons for that but it was a poor performance from our squad today.

“If you look at our last few results, they haven’t been consistent but there is no reason to be so anxious and so nervous.

  • Tottenham hits six in Everton demolition

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to record an emphatic 6-2 victory against Everton in Sunday’s Premier League fixture at Goodison Park.

Theo Walcott had given Everton an early lead, but doubles from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane and efforts from Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen gave Mauricio Pochettino a second successive win on the road during a week where speculation regarding his long-term future has mounted.

Spurs remain in third position but now sit just two points adrift of second-placed Manchester City, while Marco Silva’s side remain in the bottom half of the standings and have now recorded just one win in seven attempts.

Everton should have opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Richarlison sent a free header wide of the target, before Kane saw a lob go marginally off target and Jordan Pickford reacted well to keep out a volley from Kieran Trippier.

An early goal appeared inevitable and it was Everton who went in front through Walcott, who converted from eight yards after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had cut the ball back from the byline.

Kane almost netted an instant equaliser with his 20-yard effort going inches over the crossbar, but Everton felt aggrieved after being denied a second goal when Calvert-Lewin was adjudged to have pushed Davinson Sanchez before heading into the far corner.

Spurs’ leveller came just two minutes later. A long ball led to Pickford and Kurt Zouma getting in each other’s way, and Son kept his composure to send a 25-yard effort into the far corner of an empty net.

The North London outfit remained in the ascendancy and a second goal arrived through Alli, whose half-volley was deflected into the bottom corner after Pickford had saved well from Son.

Everton needed to reach the break without conceding a third but Spurs extended their advantage through Kane, with the club’s top goalscorer sending the ball into an empty net after Trippier’s 25-yard set piece had hit the inside of the post.

Spurs looked like they were going to score on each occasions that they surged forward, and a fourth arrived soon after the restart as Eriksen sent a stunning volley from 20 yards into the bottom corner after Everton had only half-cleared a Kane cross.

That should have wrapped up the three points for Pochettino’s men, but Everton found a way back into the game just two minutes later when Sigurdsson found the bottom corner of the net from 15 yards after being given the space to run across the edge of the area.
