Everton in hot pursuit for Onyekuru

Everton are set to double their money on Henry Onyekuru, without the Nigeria striker kicking a ball for the Toffees following his £7million summer arrival from KAS Eupen.

According to sportsrollcall.com Juventus and Atletico Madrid want the 20-year-old, who was loaned to Anderlecht over work-permit problems after arriving at Goodison in the summer.

Onyekuru cost £7million from KAS Eupen but has increased his value with six goals in his last five games in the Belgian League.

He also impressed in Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain in which he struck the woodwork.

But frustratingly he has not been given the chance to replace Romelu Lukaku up front for Koeman.

Juve have started to pay close attention to Onyekuru after losing out to Monaco for the signature of Senegal international Keita Balde while Atletico see him as a long-term replacement for Fernando Torres.

Everton must now decide whether to push for a work permit – or cash in and invest the money elsewhere.

Onyekuru made his international debut for Nigeria earlier this year and has a chance of making their World Cup squad to Russia.

UEFA drags Everton to court over player’s attack

Less than two months after receiving a heavy fine, Everton are again  facing punishment from UEFA after being charged over an ugly brawl in their Europa League clash with Lyon which fans became involved in.

Ashley Williams was fortunate not to see red when he needlessly shoved Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to the floor under a high ball in the 64th minute of the Toffees’ 2-1 defeat, before squaring up to Bertrand Traore.

As the fracas spilled off the pitch towards the advertising hoardings, a man holding a child reached over and appeared to slap Lopes, while other fans were seen grabbing at the visiting players.

An individual has been banned by Everton, who have also raised the issue with Merseyside Police.

But European football’s governing body have taken a dim view, charging the Premier League club with “aggressions by supporters against players – Art. 16 (2) (H) of the Disciplinary Regulations”.

A statement added: “This case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 16 November.”

Everton were fined €10,000 in September after crowd trouble in their match with Hajduk Split.

Just three minutes after the fracas, Williams cancelled out Nabil Fekir’s fifth-minute penalty with a thumping header, but Traore’s flick won the points for Lyon and piled more pressure on Everton boss Ronald Koeman.

  • Everton must prepare to win ugly, Sigurdsson says

Everton must prepare to win ugly, Sigurdsson says

Everton Football Club must be prepared to win anyway possible to lift their spirits and turn their English Premier League season around, Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson has said.

Everton needed a late penalty kick from Wayne Rooney to salvage a 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday and are 16th on the table with eight points.

Sigurdsson said they were not far away from getting better results with this.

“Obviously the next game is an important one but, for us at the moment, we just need to win, pretty or ugly,” the midfielder told the club’s website (www.evertonfc.com) ahead of their Europa League game against France’s Lyon on Thursday.

“We just need to get results and once we do that, the confidence will come back into the team and things will come a little bit easier for us.

“And I think if we get a couple of results back-to-back, then we’ll hopefully get going. I don’t think we’re too far away.”

Everton are bottom of Group E after a 3-0 loss to Italian group leaders Atalanta and a 2-2 draw with Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

Lyon are a spot above Everton after two draws.

“It’s a strange group. I think everyone can beat anyone,” Sigurdsson said.

“There are some good teams in there. You may need at least 10 points to go through and it will be nice to start (building towards) that on Thursday against a tough team.

“The boys and the staff are determined to work hard to turn this around because we’ve got good players. Personally and with all of the players collectively, we’re just off our best.

“But they are small margins in football and I don’t think we’re a mile off getting results, and a couple of scruffy wins, 1-0 away or whatever it is, that pumps a little bit of confidence into the team and that’s sometimes what you need.”

  • Everton tables £31m bid for William Carvalho

Everton tables £31m bid for William Carvalho

Everton have tabled  a £31million bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho despite the club considering him not transferable

Portuguese newspaper Record claim the Toffees are refusing to give up on the 25-year-old despite Sporting’s not-for-sale stance.

Club directors are said to have watched Carvalho in action this season, with boss Ronald Koeman deeming him an ‘ideal’ addition to his squad.

West Ham were keen on signing the defensively-minded midfielder last summer but could not agree a deal with Sporting.

Record claims that Everton are now the front-runners for Carvalho’s signature, despite the Portuguese club’s reluctance to cash-in.

Koeman has prioritised signing a new striker in the January transfer window with his side struggling for goals after the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

But after a disappointing start to the season, the Merseyside club could look to strengthen in other areas in order to get their campaign back on track.

Blues boss Koeman already has Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye and James McCarthy as defensive midfield options, although the Republic of Ireland international has struggled for form and fitness.

McCarthy has attracted interest from a number of clubs including Newcastle, West Brom and Crystal Palace, with a move away during the winter window a possibility.

Aside from Everton, Carvalho has previous been linked with a move to Arsenal even as manager Jorge Jesus insists the former Portugal U-21 ace is still relevant to his plan and is going no where

Eligble for both Portugal and Angola, Carvalho chose to represent the former. When he was still part of the Portugal under-20s the Angolan Football Federation tried to call him up, but were rejected.

Carvalho made his debut with the Portuguese under-21 team on 15 October 2012, in a 0–1 friendly loss with Ukraine. He scored twice during the 2015 UEFA European Championship qualifiers, in home wins against Norway and Israel

He was first called up by full side manager Paulo Bento in November 2013, for the 2014 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Sweden. He gained his first cap in the second leg on the 19th, coming on as a 73rd-minute substitute in a 3–2 away triumph and eventually made the final 23-man squad for the tournament in Brazil.

Driving  offence : Rooney begins community service

Wayne Rooney has started his community service painting benches at a garden centre for disabled adults near his £6million home.

The Everton striker was ordered to undertake 100 hours unpaid work after being caught drink-driving.

The married father-of-three was driving 29-year-old Laura Simpson’s car back to her house.

The former England captain had met the office worker in a bar in Wilmslow while his pregnant wife Coleen was on holiday with their three children.

When stopped by police at 2am, over a faulty tail light, he had 104mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath making him three times over the limit.

Rooney admitted drink driving in court last month.

Conveniently the garden centre where he is undertaking his service is just three miles from his luxurious £6million property in Prestbury, Cheshire.

But despite the close proximity, the £150,000-a-week star was chauffeured to his shift.

At 8.40am this morning, he began his shift wearing a blue jacket, blue hoodie, matching blue bottoms and black Nike trainers.

The garden centre is the same venue where former Manchester United team mate Carlos Tevez was ordered to work after he was banned four years ago.

Rooney retired from playing for his country earlier this year and seized the chance to clock up some hours community service while the Premier League is on hold.

Once there, Rooney, 31, put on a green zip-up fleece, worn by colleagues and spent all his time inside

It is understood he has been given routine maintenance tasks as disadvantaged adults around him learn new skills, including plant potting, and woodwork.

He said: ‘I accept the court’s decision and hope I can make amends through my community service.’

He was arrested in the early hours of September 1 as he drove a VW Beetle belonging to Laura Simpson, 29, in the passenger seat.

The news came as a shock to his wife Coleen, who is expecting their fourth child.  She has not been seen with her wedding ring since.

  • Full-Time: Everton 0-1 Burnley (Emotional Day for Ronald Koeman)

Full-Time: Everton 0-1 Burnley (Emotional Day for Ronald Koeman)

    Full-Time: Everton 0-1 Burnley.

It was a wonderful win for Burnley on Sunday in their English Premier League away match against Everton.

Burnley is now on the sixth spot of the EPL table, as they now have 12 points from their first seven matches. Worthy to note that they have successfully maintained their unbeaten away record with today’s win at Goodison Park.

They played the match with slightly concerning start and scored a cracking goal to win the game in the first half through Jeff Hendrick sweeping home after a flowing move.

The visiting team never looked like conceding after taking the lead, restricting Everton to nothing in the second half.

Everton now stay 16th, two points above the bottom three. And everyone knows that there is problem with the club and Ronald Koeman is under huge pressure. Koeman can only wish Everton were in as good a shape as Burnley.

Rooney avoids broken hand, fit to face Burnley

Everton forward Wayne Rooney has been passed fit to face Burnley after a scan ended fears he had broken his hand

Rooney played the whole match and scored as Everton were held to a 2-2 Europa League draw against Apollon Limassol at Goodison Park on Thursday.

But the former England striker had to be treated with bandages and take painkillers in the first half after suffering what looked like a nasty hand injury when he was stood on by an opponent.

Tests, though, have confirmed no serious damage has been caused, so Rooney is in contention for Sunday’s home match against Burnley, with the status of defensive duo Michael Keane (foot) and Phil Jagielka (hamstring) less certain.

“Wayne had a scan on his hand this morning and it is fine – there is no fracture,” Koeman said at his pre-match media conference.

“I hope to have some positive news on Saturday – we need to make a decision about Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka whether they are available for Sunday, but they are doubtful.

“It’s always important to have everybody available, because all these players are quality, experienced players and that’s what you need in a difficult situation.”

On midfielder James McCarthy’s recovery from a knee injury, Koeman added: “He needs game time first in the Under-23s to play – that’s how players need to come back after a long time being injured.”

Everton are looking to lift spirits after the Apollon draw, which left them bottom of Group E and followed a difficult start to the Premier League campaign that has left Koeman under pressure.

“I’m too long in this job to lose my confidence, but yes, I’m worried about the situation and how we can turn it around,” said the Everton boss.

“I have enough confidence to be the same manager as I was for the past six or seven years, when I was successful

“Football can be strange, football can be difficult, but Thursday can’t be compared to Sunday because the opponent is totally different

“If we win maybe we are back, but if we don’t win Monday will be totally different and that is football

“Maybe [the players’ fear came from] the pressure to win the game. We try to analyse everything, but we are human people.

“The situation [in the league] was possible to expect when we knew all the fixtures in the beginning

“You can see it as really negative for our position in the Premier League, but you can lose against Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United. We played 10 more games and we lost one of 10. It’s not all so negative.”

  • Valencia Scores Screamer in Man United 4-0 Everton Win

Valencia Scores Screamer in Man United 4-0 Everton Win

Antonio Valencia scored a stunning goal in the Manchester United 4-0 win against Everton on Sunday.

United took the lead when Antonio Valencia produced a superb strike from the edge of the area on four minutes, connecting with Nemanja Matic’s pass on the bounce to power the ball past Jordan Pickford.

They should have doubled their lead on 26 minutes, but Lukaku somehow missed the target from close range.

Wayne Rooney, returning to Old Trafford, threatened an equaliser in the first half when he dragged a shot wide, and he forced David De Gea into a save soon after the break.

They went close again just after the hour mark when Gylfi Sigurdsson got an effort away from close range, but De Gea was again equal to it.

Juan Mata then won a free kick on the edge of the area and stepped up to rattle the post.

United eventually increased the lead in the 83rd minute, shortly after Rooney had been substituted, as Lukaku set up Henrikh Mkhitaryan to slot home.

Lukaku was able to add his name to the scoresheet in the 90th minute when the ball came back into his path after he had struck a free kick into the wall.

Substitute Anthony Martial then added a fourth from the penalty spot after Morgan Schneiderlin’s handball to give United an equal record to league leaders Manchester City.

    • Martial converted from the spot to give Manchester united the 4-0 lead at full time.
    • Lukaku scored the third goal for Manchester United in the 89th minute.
    • Mkhitaryan scored the second goal in the 83rd minutes.
    • Antonio Valencial scored the first goal.

    Kick off time; 4pm

Before the match all eyes were on Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku as they returned to their respective previous clubs in the Manchester united and Everton Match.

Rooney returned to the  Old Trafford for the first time this season while Romelu Lukaku, leading scorer for United this season, faced his former club for the first time.

On the surface, it would be an easy outing for Manchester United as Everton have won just one out of four matches in the league and United have been extremely convincing.

However for the Red Devils, a notable absentee is Paul Pogba who is out with an injury for the next few weeks.

Everton was defeated by Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea after managing to draw against Manchester City 1-1. United, on the other hand, started the season brilliantly with three wins before a surprise draw against Stoke City last weekend.

Everton outscored a United that were all too obstructed in attack last season, only for Jose Mourinho’s team to suddenly become so fluent just as Ronald Koeman’s become so painfully slow. As the focal points of their teams, it would be impossible not to focus on Rooney and Lukaku in this regard.

For one thing, Rooney has actually been one of Everton’s few sources of sharpness this season. One of the reasons for that is evidently his personal response to the obvious blow to the ego that getting dropped and discarded by United was.

Barkley snubs Chelsea in dramatic end to transfer deadline day

Chelsea suffered a dramatic late blow on transfer deadline day when Everton midfielder Ross Barkley rejected a move to Stamford Bridge after travelling to their training ground for a medical.

On a day of frenetic spending which took the English Premier League total to a record far above one billion pounds, they also missed out on two of their other targets.

The Premier League champions missed out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fernando Llorente.

England midfielder Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Liverpool and Spaniard Llorente joined Tottenham Hotspur in deals worth 35 million pounds and 12 million pounds respectively.

But Antonio Conte’s side still managed some business, paying Torino 23 million pounds for defender Davide Zappacosta and then pushing through a late deal for Danny Drinkwater.

Special dispensation was requested from the English Football Association (FA) to register Leicester City’s midfielder after the official deadline, making it one of several deals to come through late.

However welcome those signings will be for Chelsea, they may not compensate for the snub delivered by England midfielder Barkley.

He arrived at their Cobham training ground late on Thursday only to turn round and head back north.

Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri said Barkley had turned up at the west London club’s Cobham training base only to undergo a dramatic change of heart as the transfer deadline clock ticked down.

“The two clubs agreed a deal of 35 million pounds. I think personal terms were agreed and after medical (sic) we heard from Paul Martin, Ross Barkley’s agent, that he had changed his mind,’’ said Moshiri.

He added that Barkley, who is in the final year of his contract at Everton, wanted to “reconsider his position’’ in the January transfer window.

“It was a big surprise but this is football,’’ Moshiri said.

A source close to 23-year-old Barclay said the midfielder did not have a medical and wanted to make a decision about his future when he was fully fit.

He has been sidelined with a hamstring injury after a hernia operation.

Alexis Sanchez was another player staying put, although for different reasons.

Arsenal turned down a 60 million pounds bid from Manchester City after failing to secure his potential replacement, Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.

This was in spite of a 92 million pounds bid reportedly being accepted by the French club.

British media speculated that the France winger would have preferred a switch to Liverpool, who were reported to have made their own bid.

The development was a possible indication that Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho could be en route from Anfield to FC Barcelona.

Although that deal looks unlikely, the transfer window in Spain does not close until Friday.

Liverpool failed to lure central defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, who refused to sell in spite of a high-profile transfer request.

This development had led to the Dutch international’s exclusion from first team training.

But the Merseyside club did agree a fee to sell French defender Mamadou Sakho to Crystal Palace for 24 million pounds.

West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans is also staying put despite being linked with a move to Arsenal or Manchester City, who still ended up as the window’s top spenders.

This was after lavishing in excess of 200 million pounds on players.

Spurs are traditionally busy on deadline day and completed the signing of Llorente from Swansea and paid PSG 23 million pounds for Ivorian Serge Aurier.

Swansea re-signed striker Wilfried Bony from Manchester City and, in one of the day’s surprises, brought in Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches on loan from Bayern Munich.

Another Portugal Euro 2016 winner, Adrien Silva, was due to join Leicester in a late deal with the Foxes also signing Austria’s Aleksandar Dragovic from Bayer Leverkusen.

Every Premier League club brought in at least two players in the window, with Watford and promoted Huddersfield Town the busiest teams with each making 13 signings.

Brighton & Hove Albion left it late to bring in goalkeeper Tim Krul on loan from Newcastle United and defender Ezequiel Schelotto from Inter Milan.

Everton, one of the window’s most prolific spenders, lavished a further 10 million pounds on Hajduk Split’s teenage striker Nikola Vlasic.

France defender Mamadou Sakho joined Crystal Palace from Liverpool on a four-year deal, the club said on Friday.

The deal for centre-back Sakho, who spent the last season on loan at Selhurst Park and played eight games for Palace, was worth about 26 million pounds ($33.65 million).
