  • AD sacks Oyo chairman, exco for backing PDP

THE National Headquarters of Alliance for Democracy (AD) has named Aremo Adeola Adepoju as the party’s acting Chairman in Oyo State.

This followed the re-composition of the party’s state caretaker committee.

A letter signed by the party’s National Chairman, Chief Joseph Avazi, dated March 4, has informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the party’s decision.

The latest development was informed by alleged anti-party activities of Chief Akin Alamu, the erstwhile AD caretaker committee chairman.

Alamu, had a couple of months ago, openly declared support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde.

  • Lagos commissioner resigns from Exco, APC

The Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Oluwo Olawale Wasiu, has resigned as commissioner and member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wasiu, who hails from Epe, submitted his resignation as commissioner to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday in his office at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, the state capital.

The letter said his reasons for resigning include the conduct of the October primary of the party, which he said had some defects.

Describing the primary as integrity-deficient, Wasiu said it diminished the hard-earned reputation of the state as a reference point for free and fair democratic practice.

“In the particular case of the governorship primary, which was conducted using the ‘open ballot’ option in violation of the guidelines of the APC, which specify the ‘open secret ballot’ option, it is clear to me that the core principles of merit, competence, justice and fairness have been sacrificed by the APC in the altar of political expediency.

“I have struggled for weeks to understand the rationale for the apparent desperation and brigandage brazenly displayed by the party apparatchiks in the various elections.”

The former commissioner regretted that “such vicious attacks could be unleashed on the progress that the state has made in its steady democratic journey”.

He also accused the party of being indifferent to the activities of a powerful group within it, saying such group used an arm of government to intimidate critical institutions of democracy and allegedly undermined the doctrine of separation of powers.

Wasiu said the group was allegedly “creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and impairing government’s ability to implement policies and programmes that will benefit the majority of the people”.

This, he said, was in contrast with his “strongly held belief that group interest, no matter how powerful, must be subordinated to the interest of the majority”, adding that “the present atmosphere of encirclement will not abate anytime soon”.

Although it is yet to be confirmed, sources close to Wasiu said he is on his way to team up the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje who is said to a close friend of the former commissioner.

  • Alumni body gets new exco

The Educational Initiative for Development in Western Nigeria (EIFDW) has inaugurated members of the Executive Committee of the Conference of Old Students/Alumni Associations across the South West states.

Performing the inauguration at the former Red Cross Building, Oke Mosan,  Abeokuta , the Chairman, Board of Trustees of  EIFDW, Mr. Michael Oyawale, pointed out that the decadence in the educational sector,  especially at the primary school level,  necessitated the creation of the alma mater endowments to salvage the situation.

Oyawale added that though various governments had continued to pursue free education policies, inadequate funding had badly affected  the initiative due to the economic downturn ravaging the country.

“The years of unbroken underfunding and half-hearted interventions have left the school system in comprehensive decay and restoration will, therefore, have to be just as comprehensive .

“We need the massive sustained injection of funds at professionally defined objectives in a comprehensive master plan that transcends the silo of individual school boundaries to the apex of regional cooperation and bonding,”he said.

The Ogun State Head of Service and a managing partner of the EIFDW, Mr. Abayomi Sobande, admonished the new executive committee to keep the conference going, noting that the government alone could not solve all the challenges facing schools.

Responding on behalf of the committee, Prof. Biyi Afonja, who was represented by Mr. Lateef Owodeyi,  praised  the EIFDW for the opportunity given him to serve in rescuing the school system from collapse.

    Ekiti council pensioners dissolve Exco

There was drama yesterday at the meeting of Local Government Pensioners Association of Nigeria (LOGPAN) in Ekiti State as members sacked the executive, led by Chief Julius Adekogba.

The pensioners at their mini-congress in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said Adekogba, who had been in office for 21 years, violated Article 2 (ii) of the constitution, which provides for a term of three years in office, though renewable.

The pensioners also said Adekogba contravened Article 13 (viii) by accepting a political appointment from Governor Ayo Fayose as a commissioner in the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).

They noted that other members of the Exco are also guilty by congratulating Adekogba, as none of them drew his attention to the alleged infraction.

The members said Adekogba could not remain in office and be LOGPAN’s national chairman.

The motion for the dissolution of the Exco was moved by Mr. Biodun Olanrewaju and was seconded by voice-vote.

Besides dissolving the Exco, the pensioners resolved that a caretaker committee be constituted to pilot affairs of the union and conduct an election for new officials.

Adekogba was also accused of allegedly refusing to render a statement of annual income and expenditure, as well as illegal and unauthorised deductions.

He described those who dissolved the Exco as “dissidents”.

“They are not bonafide members of LOGPAN; they are a dissident group of newly retired people. They said we should wage war against the governor and we said no.

“All of us know the economic situation of the country; fighting the government won’t be in our interest. They operate a group, called Concerned Local Government Pensioners’ Forum, which is not recognised by the government.”

Adekogba added that a peace meeting will hold today under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) to resolve the impasse.

Exco seeks release of Fayose’s aides

The Ekiti State Executive Council (Exco) has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release the Commissioner of Finance, Chief Toyin Ojo and Accountant General, Mrs. Yemisi Owolabi, from its custody.

Members spoke yesterday at their meeting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

They described EFCC’s arrest and detention of the duo on September 28 as an “abuse of power and witch-hunt by pseudo-democrats in Abuja to diabolically incapacitate the Ayo Fayose administration”.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Information, Youth and Sports Development Commissioner Lanre Ogunsuyi said the anti-graft agency should, in the alternative, charge them to court if anything incriminating had been established against them.

Ogunsuyi said the arrest of Ojo and Owolabi was “in violation of a subsisting ruling of a court of competent jurisdiction restraining the supposed anti-graft body from inviting or arresting officials of the state”.

The commissioner urged the EFCC to “respect the rule of law by abiding by the subsisting court ruling”.

He added: “The options available to EFCC is to either grant the arrested state officials administrative bail or charge them to court, if they had breached the law.”

Ogunsuyi said the EFCC allegedly ignored the government’s repeated petitions to investigate the previous administration, “despite incontrovertible evidences”.

Ekiti State Exco condemned what Ogunsuyi said was “the lopsided policies of the Federal Government, which were skewed towards developing only All Progressives Congress (APC) states at the expense of other states of the federation perceived to be stronghold of opposition”.

It claimed this was “a result of political intolerance and ignorance of the part of the Federal Government”.

Makarfi, who cited Section 31, (2)(e) of the party’s constitution to back the dissolution, said a caretaker committee would be set up to run the affairs of the state’s chapter of the party, pending the election of a substantive executive committee for the chapter.

Our scorecard, by AOCOED alumni exco

Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (aocoed) Alumni Association has thanked members for the confidence reposed in the executive.

The association said the vote of confidence expressed by members served as an inspiration to do more amid several challenges still confronting the body.

The association’s National President, Comrade Adeyemi Adesanya, spoke while presenting the executive’s scorecard to congress at FIJB Event Centre, Isheri, Lagos at the weekend.

“I feel so elated because the congress expressly said we have done so well,” Adesanya told The Nation.

Among many achievements, Adesanya said the alumni under his watch trained the college security guards, organised various seminar for the students leadership; raised the association’s internally-generally revenue, and built the alumni secretariat.

Though there are still many rivers to cross, Adesanya said he was optimistic that the executive whose tenure expired late this year, had rebranded the alumni body, making it a lot easier for whoever succeeded it to continue from where it stopped.

The congress, which dragged for hours, witnessed arguments and counter-arguments by members, particularly over a draft of the reviewed constitution.

“The process of constitution review is not an easy thing all over the world,” Adesanya continued, “The fact remains that our constitution is tired and weak. So, we have to catch up with the present situation all over the world. That is why the National Executive Council (NEC) on behalf of the congress set up a committee. The constitution has been reviewed now and the implementation would follow suit.

“I want to say that AOCOED alumni association has taken a new course. We shall not pretend that there are no challenges. There are, but we need to address them and we are happy the incoming administration will surpass what we have done.’’
