  • ‘Saraki not responsible for delay in exco’

Kwara State government has denied rumours that Senate President Bukola Saraki and the crisis at the National Assembly are responsible for the delay in constituting the Executive Council (exco).

It said the governor addressed the issue during last week’s interactive programme: “The Governor Explains.”

The statement stressed that the delayed in appointing commissioners and special advisers was caused by the financial challenges facing the state and the need to adjust government programmes and plans.

It said the government successfully navigated the state’s finances, despite the nationwide economic crisis.

The House of Assembly yesterday approved the request of Governor Ahmed to appoint 10 special advisers to facilitate the  running of the government.

It gave the approval at the resumption of its plenary, following the presentation of the governor’s message dated June 26 by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Matthew Okedare, who presided over the sitting.

Ahmed had requested the House’s approval for the special advisers, to enable him deliver on his electoral promises.

  • Ebonyi APC condemns appointment of CJ’s wife into Umahi’s Exco

The Ebonyi State All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the appointment of the wife of the Chief Judge (CJ), Mrs Lilian Nwankwo, as the Sole Administrator of the state’s Local Government Service Commission.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting and signed by its Acting Chairman, Pastor Eze Nwachukwu Eze and Publicity Secretary, Ngaji Nwodo, the party noted that such appointment would have effect on the Judiciary.

According to the communiqué, the APC noted the unpreparedness of the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration for good leadership, as demonstrated by its policies and administrative summersaults, including vindictiveness.

It said: “This shows that it is not only lacking in focus and ideas but it is also not the type of government Ebonyi residents are yearning for.”

APC pledged to build one indivisible, indissoluble and united front to win future elections in the state.

It said: “To achieve this, the meeting advised that all known internal wrangling and cleavages – wherever they had existed – should be eradicated to ensure that the APC wins all future elections, especially the governorship election.

The party expressed appreciation for its optimum growth, as recorded by the recent influx of members of other parties into its fold.

APC said: “The new members would be accorded equal rights and opportunities, as provided for in the party’s constitution.”

But PDP’s State Chairman Joseph Onwe noted that APC’s criticism of Mrs Nwankwo’s appointment was political.

He said: “The appointment has nothing to do with the Judiciary, as the Chief Judge’s wife is neither a judge nor a member of the Judiciary.”

The PDP chairman said she would not meddle in the affairs of the Judiciary.

Onwe said the policies of the state government under the PDP were aimed at developing the state and bringing democratic dividends to the people.

He said: “Other states are applying the same policies because they are aimed at reducing the costs of governance and bringing development to the people.”

  • Group gets new exco

    Group gets new exco

An eight-member executive committee has been inaugurated to steer the ship of a new branch of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). The event was held at the college in Ijanikin, a Lagos suburb.

NPMCN is a branch of the Senior Staff Association of University, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI).

SSAUTHRIAI’s General Secretary, Mr. Moshood Akinade, urged the executive members to uphold its constitution. “Be good examples to your members and ensure that you carry out the decisions of the membership. The branch is out to cater for the welfare of NPMCN. Don’t just hold meetings with the management on matters relating to the workers welfare; where you cannot succeed, inform the SSAUTHRIAI so that we can come to your aid,” he said.

The Acting President of SSAUTHRIAI, Dr Benjamin Akintola, noted that for long, there had been no branch at the college to organise workers and fight for their rights, adding that the branch must help the workers to have a voice in the management of the college and fight for their rights.

“The inaugurated branch is for checks and balances. The running of the management like a one-man show where workers are not involved has to come to an end so that there would be better productivity and improved results,” he said.

The branch’s chairman, Adewale Oriola, said the branch was borne out of the need for unity among workers of the NPMCN. “The branch will also enable members to articulate their needs under one umbrella and in a common front and collate their grievances and suffering and table it before the management,” he added.

Secretary of the branch, Mr Emiloju Oluwadamilare, thanked members for their efforts, promising that the executive would be transparent in its activities.
