RMRDC, MAN others partner on raw material, equipment expo

The Raw Material Research & Development Council (RMRDC), Manufacturer’s Association of Nigeria (MAN) and Clarion Events are billed to hold the fourth Nigerian Raw Materials and equipment EXPO in Lagos next week.

Director General RMDRC, Dr. Dikko Ibrahim, said the EXPO is part of  the agency’s mandate to promote the development and utilisation of Nigeria’s abundant natural resources as input for sustainable growth and development of resource-based manufacturing.

He also said the idea is to create a platform where stakeholders in the raw materials value chain could come together to synergise, trade in available resources and raw materials with the manufactures.

The Director-General added that the patronage of local alternatives will save huge Forex for the nation as the available and tested raw materials is worth hundreds of millions in Naira value.

Ibrahim said the agency had done so much with the agro and mineral sector especially with the fruit juice manufacturers by eliminating the importation of fruit concentrate and water.

On the sector that has most benefitted in the backward integration and patronage of  local raw materials, he said the  Small &Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that are into food industry have benefitted immensely. He said the fall in oil prices had indirectly impacted the  nation as more industrialists had keyed into patronising local substitutes.

Ibrahim, who was represented by the Director, Investment & Consultancy, Dr. Zainab Hammanga, said the EXPO is in line with government’s agenda on diversification and local content, he stressed that the gathering would give litmus to government’s policy on ease of doing business.

MAN president Dr. Frank Udemba Jacobs, said the EXPO which features Manufacturing Partnership for African Development (mPAD) provides a veritable platform for SMEs to learn hands-on processes on how to boost their output, reduce cost, drive quality improvement, manufacture for new markets and secure funding for growth.

He observed that this year’s theme “Enhancing Nigeria’s Manufacturing Competitiveness in the Global space will lift the capacity of local manufacturers.

He said: “ The event which hosted 2600 manufacturing experts from all over the globe at inception in 2016 has not only grown to becoming a leading international exhibition, recording 3700 participants last year but also making great impact on the Nigerian economy as attested to by participants who cut across various sectors. Currently, over 3,000 visitors and exhibitors have confirmed participation against our expectation of 4000 participants. Among those who have registered are equipment manufacturers from Germany, Turkey, Indonesia, Italy and China.”

Clarion Event Manager, Mr. Joseph Oru said the EXPO will serve as a meeting point for manufacturers and will aid greater integration amongst players in the sector. He said it will not fast-track development but further engender backward integration.

He told The Nation  in Lagos that the expo would not only bring together building professionals in the country, but also international manufacturers, services and technologies providers to explore opportunities in one of the fast-developing sectors in the country.

He added that there has been  rapid growth in the last 20 years in the construction industry, and important projects in the country.

The General Manager, Elan Expo International Trade Fairs, Mr. Nihat Suer, explained that this year’s expo is hinged on stronger international partnership with delegations from participating countries.

  • Expo sets new benchmark, empowers over 2000 women

Expo sets new benchmark, empowers over 2000 women

For 22 days, participants drawn from 17 African countries, Nigeria’s 18 states and hundreds of SMEs showcased quality arts and craft at this year’s 10th African Arts and Craft Expo in Abuja, which ended last Sunday. Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME reports.

Over two thousand women received training in e-marketing, bead-making, cloth weaving,  soap, air freshener, shoe making, hair-do, waste-to-wealth and make-up, among other skills at this year’s 10th African Arts and Craft Expo in Abuja.

The 22-day expo, which ended last Sunday, also provided free medical tests for blood sugar and Body Mass Index for about 1,120 Nigerians, who could not afford such exercises. Also, 200 Nigerians were given free eye glasses while 620 got free dental test.

Apart from the tremendous improvement in infrastructural development and content, the exercise was part of the innovations (investment round table, and states special days), which made this year’s AFAC Expo tagged: Nigerian Crafts: Untapped treasure, to surpass previous editions in its 10years of existence. Little wonder 17 countries, 18 states, 94 local government councils and over 200 NGOs participated in the expo, which attracted an unprecedented numbers of the diplomatic corps as well as other foreigners.

Head of Service (HoS) of the Federation, Mrs Uyo Etta, who drew the curtain on the expo, said she was impressed with what she saw at the event, especially the security, excellent layout of pavilions and the skill acquisition programme for women. She urged the council not to rest on its oars, but take arts and culture to greater height, adding that stakeholders and the states should partner regions and countries for better promotion of the expo.

Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism Grace Isu Gekpe, who was excited by the quality of the organisation of the expo, said Otunba Runsewe brought lots of  innovations into the expo, noting that it was the best ever since the expo started. “I believe that next year will be better and bigger as he executed this year’s edition with little or nothing. On the part of the ministry, we will do all within our capacity to support the expo,” she added.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State who was represented by Secretary to Kogi State Government, Mrs Folashade Arike pledged the state’s support for the promotion of culture.

Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, said given the height of creativity and ingenuity of African exhibitors as complemented by professional colleagues from other parts of the world, this year’s expo has set a new benchmark. He said the event has increased both domestic and international traffic in Abuja on the days the expo lasted. Otunba Runsewe, who pledged that the council would not rest on its oars until it realises the vision of making the expo the best in Africa and one of the best in the world, renamed it International Arts and Craft Expo.

“The challenge before us now is how to attract critical stakeholders to join hands with the National Council for Art s and Culture to develop a vibrant expo that is second to none in the world. We need to leverage the potentials of this industry to help drive the economic diversification policy of this administration. I therefore call for the collaboration of government, corporate organisations, tour operators and art vendors,” he said.

Otunba Runsewe, who described the expo as an opportunity for showcasing products and networking by exhibitors as against outright sales of arts and craft, disclosed that considering the challenges posed by the rain, next year’s expo would be held before the rainny season sets in.

On what spurred him to repackage the expo, he said: “I needed to prove my competence as was done in tourism because many did not believe I could re-enact same feat in culture, especially in the face of the economic challenges facing the nation now. Above all, I want to use this sector to kick-start cultural diplomacy that can be used in resolving many national crises.

“When you appeal to the people using their cultural elements, the job of reducing hate speeches is half done.”

Otunba Runsewe cited reconstruction of venue, re-engineering of safety and security, using National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as arrow head, introduction of skill acquisition and redesigning of the pavilions as part of the strategies used to repackage the expo.

Before now, the venue of the expo only had four toilet facilities for the guests and participants. But, this year 30 mobile toilets and one exceutive toilet were provided.

Former National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Director-General,  Mr. Tom Adaba, described Runsewe as cat with the proverbial nine lives, who goes and comes back better, articulate and ready to serve. He urged the DG to keep it up and take the expo to international standard, noting that arts and crafts are the products that distinguished Nigerians as a people.

Senator Smart Adeyemi said apart from football culture is what ‘we can use to cement our diversity. As a state, Kogi is endowed culturally and capable of hosting a similar event.’

United Kingdom (UK) trained entrepreneur Adaobi Jennifer Ifeadi, who deals on body and hair cream products, said she made good sales throughout the duration of the expo. “On a normal day, I sold products worth N20,000. I appreciate the opportunity the expo provided to show and sell my products and hope to be here next year,” she said.

Executive member, Society of Nigerian Artists (Abuja Chapter), Mr. Onyeka Ilo Anya,  described this year’s expo as the best in the last 10years in terms of planning, publicity and packaging. “In fact, I scored the expo the best in all ramifications. This year’s expo is an edition to beat. There is guaranteed security in the pavilion 24/7, products are very safe even when you are sleeping at night and after closing nobody is allowed to stay back. Unlike past editions, exhibitors slept in the venue. Last year the society only sold one miniature whereas this year we made good sales. We pray next year will be better and bigger,” Anya said.

  • Pharmaceutical’s expo to attract 200 exhibitors

The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN) has concluded arrangements to hold the Nigeria Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Expo (NPME 2017) in Lagos, from August 30 to September 1.

PMG-MAN is the umbrella body of local manufacturers of medicines and healthcare products in Nigeria. NPME is the biggest international pharma manufacturing exhibition in West and Central Africa.

According to its organisers, NPME is the definitive pharma event, and this year, delegates are expected from countries across the continent including Ghana, Mali, Chad,Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, Senegal and Morocco. Others are The Gambia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Benin, and South Africa.

A statement by PMG-MAN’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Obi Peter Adigwe, said the Expo was billed to attract close to 200 exhibiting companies and nearly 10,000 pharma and related sectors’ trade professionals from across the region.

According to him, this year’s edition with the theme: Increasing Access to Healthcare in Nigeria: Strategic partnerships to achieve Medicines’ security and national self- sufficiency, is expected to surpass all stakeholders’ expectations.

Adigwe said this was due to PMG-MAN’s robust and comprehensive advocacy, which has resulted in significant advances in the pharma manufacturing policy landscape in Nigeria as well as on the continent.

Recently, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo issued an Executive Order on support for local content in public procurement, directing the mandatory patronage of locally manufactured medicines by all Ministries,Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Operators say that this policy is expected to accelerate growth and development of the local pharmaceutical manufacturing sector, which will in turn assure national medicines’ security as well as boost self sufficiency in the production of medicines.

Other positive outcomes associated with these policies include the stimulation of considerable employment in the sector and their capacity to also lead to increased inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as well as facilitate the export of Nigerian medicines to neighbouring countries.

To build on this, the President, West African Pharmaceutical ManufacturersAssociation (WAPMA)/PMG-MAN Chairman, Dr. S. Okey Akpa, during his presentation to the ECOWAS Health Ministers’ Assembly, urged member nations, as well as development partners to support the on-going collaborative efforts to exponentially increase manufacturers’ capacity on the continent.

This, he argued, was the most sustainable manner to guarantee access to high quality, affordable medicines within the region.

Another recent development that demonstrates the significant improvement in local pharma manufacturing is the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) signed by the Federal Government with a local firm to produce vaccines in Nigeria.

While signing the agreement on behalf of the government, Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, stated that the need to ensure medicines’ security for the nation was a key factor that underpinned the partnership.

Adigwe, however, said that these policy reforms represent only a fraction of the strategic engagement roadmap developed and initiated by the group to foster a favourable policy environment for local manufacturers.

He added that this year’s theme was carefully chosen to ensure the timely involvement of all relevant stakeholders in an industry he described as “The jewel of the nation in terms of criticality and potential profitability.”

Adigwe further indicated that favourable government policies together with the right local and international partners were key factors that could bring Nigeria’s pharma manufacturing industry within a stone’s throw of the Indian model where pharma manufacturing has become a major contributor to India’s $10 trillion economy.

NPME traditionally showcases a wide range of equipments and input, which cover the entire industry, including allied industries such as food, nutrition, cosmetics and others.  Investors, pharma processing machineries and service providers from a number of countries have already indicated their participation in this year’s NPME.

Additionally, pharma, healthcare, veterinary, food and beverage, and cosmetic finished products manufactured by local manufacturing companies in Nigeria will be on exhibition at the Expo.
