Iwu, others plan expo in Abuja

To ensure that  more Nigerians tap into the multi-naira and FOREX opportunities in traditional medicine (TM), major stakeholders will hold a three-day event in Abuja from October 6 to 8. Herbfest 2015 with the theme- “Food as medicine: Utilisation and sustainable exploitation of African medicinal plants and natural products” is organised by Bioresources Development and Conservation (BDCP) in collaboration with Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), and the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, (FIIRO).

The three -day expo will also serve as platform for Natural Health practitioners to know more about the importance, further prospects in natural products and how they can be packaged, presented and accepted in order to attract commercial values.

Speaking on the significance of the annual event at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, (FIIRO) Oshodi, Prof. Maurice Iwu of BDCP said the three-day event will kick off with exhibition of registered products, raw materials presentation, and training on the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Herbal Medicinal Products. “It will also educate trainees on the skill and knowledge required in herbal plant farm cultivation to research, standardisation to production and marketing.

According to Prof. Maurice Iwu, the need to boost the Gross Domestic Income (GDP) through herbal plants is very important, “So we don’t put all our energy on crude oil. We have a large number of people buying herbal products from India or China; these are natural plants put together by these countries with modern technology and drive. Nigeria is vast in herbal products. And with FIIRO and over 40 universities who have scientists that have researched extensively in this area, all we need is a ribbon to tie these together and achieve results. This is the reason for Herbfest,” he said.

He said as organisers, they are hoping that those who specialise in foods will also be present to know the importance of food; like the restaurants and allied fields, as importance of health care and how they can be transferred to valuable products is invaluable.

Explaining on further benefits of the expo, Director-General of the Federal Industrial Research Institute (FIIRO), Oshodi, Dr Gloria Elemo, said that commercialisation of herbal products had been simplified by the institute through researches it embarked upon.

“FIRRO prides itself as home of indigenous technologies in that we have successfully worked on most of the agro-commodities available in Nigeria. Our role as an institution has been to use our expertise in research and development to add value to these practices and to transfer technology to impact on the economy.

Also, the Director-General, Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA), Mr Etatuvie Oghene said: “As Nigeria is now advancing in herbal medicine research; all stakeholders must put hands on the deck and be doing something. Presently the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan now has traditional medicine in its curriculum. What we need is awareness.”

The expo, in its sixth edition, is expected to be opened by the Senate President.

  • Ship owners boycott Expo

The Nigerian Maritime Expo-(NIMAREX) 2015 edition was  boycotted, last week, by its key stakeholders and some ship owners.

Some key members of the Nigerian Shipowners Association (NISA) were absent at the event. Other critical stakeholders in the maritime and shipping sector were also not there.

Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Director-General Dr. Patrick Akpo-bolokemi, attributed the poor attendance to the crisis rocking NISA.

Akpobolokemi, represented by the Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Mr Calistus Nwabueze, urged the shipowners to close ranks, saying the Federal Government would implement the Cabotage Act and ensure that it works.

“This is not the type of event that we envisaged, we expect to see all the shipowners who come to NIMASA to register their vessels, the core practitioners are not here, you need to reach out to them and make them identify with NIMAREX and other critical programme which NIMASA organised so that together we can build the sector better than it is.

“I want to also say that it is very important that we forge unity within NISA; the shipowners, it is only when you are united that you can attract the attention of government, not when you are speaking in discordant tunes.

“Presently, there is a very serious effort by the Federal Ministry of Transport to look into the operational difficulties we are having in the implementation of Cabotage Act, and emphasis is being placed on developing indigenous vessel acquisition capacity”.

Akpobolokemi hinted that the much-awaited disbursement of Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) might take place any moment from now, assuring that the Ministry of Transport is currently showing renewed interest on vessel acquisition.

Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Managing Director Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado-Bayero urged stakeholders to use maritime resources to develop the economy.

The NPA boss urged the stakeholders to play leading role as catalysts to the development of the economy.

He, however, said the downward trend in global oil price had posed a challenge to national development.

Bayero urged Nigerians to take full advantage of the abundant maritime endowments and growth opportunities in the maritime sector.

“There is no gain saying that most great nations of the world delivered their greatness from the endowments.

“Early civilised states such as Egypt derived her prowess and globally-acclaimed wealth and prosperity from the blessings of the Great Nile River.

“The tradition has been sustaining Egypt till date as one of the greatest maritime nations of the world.

“Singapore is known as solely relying on her maritime endowments which have been developed to the extent that the country is reputed to be the world’s bunkering destination,‘’ the NPA chief said.

He said that Indonesia was reputed for her high production of seafarers who were all over the world manning vessels of different configurations and sizes.

The Chairman of the NIMAREX 2015 planning committee, Mr. Adedoyin Ayo however, called on the Federal Government to look into the problem of funding for vessel acquisition and tonnage building, saying that the maritime sector contributes immensely to Nigeria’s GDP.

  • PAPDAN to showcase best of mobile innovation at expo

PAPDAN to showcase best of mobile innovation at expo

The Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association (PAPDAN) is set to showcase the best of mobile innovation at the Phone Expo Nigeria (PEN 2014) in Lagos next month.

Its Chairman Mr. Iyke Nwosu, said the influential trade group would leverage on the event to bring the best in mobile handsets, devices and technologies “under one roof for the benefit of Nigerian consumers.”

At a briefing, he said the event packaged by Technology Times Events, would feature exhibitions of latest mobile technologies and collate unique events at the annual gathering of the mobile ecosystem.

The PAPDAN head lauded the expo initiative, saying that it would offer members of the association a platform to connect with consumers.

“We also believe that PEN 2014 will enable PAPDAN to promote the mission of the association to promote the interest of Nigerian mobile consumers,” Nwosu said.

He  said the association had become a catalyst in the growing mobile telephony  sector.

PAPDAN, based at Ikeja Computer Village, Nigeria’s biggest technology market, has over 5000 members employing more than 25,000 across the mobile value chain, Mr. Nwosu said.

According to the chairman of PAPDAN, in Computer Village alone, members of the body recorded in excess of four million units of monthly sales of diverse handsets and devices to consumers coming from across states in the country and the West African sub-region.

“PAPDAN has been crucial to the growth of the mobile telephony market in Nigeria as our members were the first to introduce dual-SIM phones. The big brands were cynical at the time but they are all now playing catch-up to gain market share in the country,” Nwosu added.

He further said: “When we introduced dual-SIM phones, people were laughing but you can see that today, a lot of the established brands are also playing catch-up.”

Nwosu said insights gained from mobile phone market trends in Nigeria show that consumers need and preference continue to grow for latest technologies and innovative products.

“One factor that drives everybody is pricing. The market is highly price-dependent and driven but consumers still want phones with lots of functionalities. Most of the consumers are looking for cheap phones and brands within the N5000 to N15000 price range are the market leaders that we have seen”,  PAPDAN chief explained.

He said consumer preferences were also shifting towards android devices that “allow them to do a lot of things”, noting that there is increasing demand for bigger screens that allow them to watch videos on the devices.

Based on market insights, the PAPDAN chairman said consumers still ask for established global brands but several relatively newer players are recording impressive performance in Nigeria because they bundle good features and also compete on “good price points”.

According to him, brands that have been able to fit into the “affordable” device segments of the Nigerian market include Tecno, Gionee, Maxtel, G-Tide, Gowin, M-Horse, among others due to compete features and pricing.

Nwosu said Nokia is witnessing a market rebound as the number one in the device market with growing demand for its cheaper phones like the Nokia X, which bundles Windows Phone and Android OS.

According to him, “Nokia is now doing very well and has become number one because most of their sales are coming from the low-end phones.”

Tecno is considered number two in the mobile device segment because the brand fits very well within the affordable phones category ahead of Samsung, he said.

According to him, Samsung is number three and has gained market attraction with an aggressive marketing and introduction of new brands.

Nwosu believed that Gionee ranks fourth in Nigeria driven by price advantages, features and local “market consistency.”

He said: “PAPDAN activities in the areas of combating counterfeiting has increased consumer confidence and that is part of the message that we are bringing to the PEN 2014 Show.”

PAPDAN has prevailed on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to improve on the standards of phones shipped into Nigeria and establish Service Centres to provide support to consumers, he said.

“So far, PAPDAN has registered 46 brands that have met the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) standards for certification and packaging,” he added.
