    How to stop puffy eyes

Everyone has suffered from puffy eyes at one time or the other; either because you did not get enough sleep, drank too much alcohol, partied too hard or simply find that yours is hereditary. Here are a few tips to banish puffy eyes or under-eye bags to keep your skin looking young and healthy.
There are three ways to get rid of puffy eyes or under eye bags. Number one, you need to get moisturizer to help your body to de-puff your under eye bugs and get rid of all the toxins that build up there. There are quite a lot of eye creams formulated with ingredients to remove eye bags. Also note, that sometimes your diet can cause a lot of extra fluid to actually collect under your eyes, so if you had a salty meal the night before, you are going to wake up the next morning with more fluid under your eyes, so try to correct your diet a little bit there.

The second thing you can use is a little secret, nothing more than paper tape. So if you did have had that high salt meal and you know you are prone to these bags the next day, put a little paper tape under your eyes when you got to sleep, the night before, and when you wake up in the morning take away the tape, you will not have the same collection of fluid under your eyes. That’s a secret way to minimize the bags.
And the third way to get rid of under eye bags after they appear. Anytime you wake up, and see bags under your eyes, and need a quick fix. You can take a very cold shower to constrict all the blood vessels and de-puff, and also do two sets of jumping jacks for 30 seconds each. That circulation is really going to help rev your body up and help drain away some of that extra fluid that collected there.

‘Your eyes can reveal your health status’

OYEYEMI GBENGA-MUSTAPHA writes that in addition to being precious organs, the eyes can  give tell-tale signs of the state of the body.

AN iridologist, Dr Gilbert Ezengige, says the eyes are capable of revealing the health of the body.

He said iridologists can look at the iris, or the coloured part of the eye, and tell what is wrong with the body.

In an interview, the medic said:   “The fibre structures that make up the iris are actually nerve fibres, and these reflex to every part of the body. So, by assessing the fibres and colours, we can determine, which areas of the body lack balance and need nourishment.  With Sclerology, we  look at the whiteness (sclera) of the eyes. The markings that appear in the whites also relate to parts of the body. Generally, the iris reveals more long-standing imbalances, while the sclera reveals areas of concern right now.”

Ezengige said the eye is the window of the body as various writings, ancient and modern, point to the relationship between the eyes and the body. “One of such statements that is notably striking is recorded by St Luke in the Bible. ‘When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body is full of darkness (Luke chapter 11 verse 34)’.

“So swift in registering impressions are our eyes that even our emotional states and dispositions can unconsciously be broadcast by us and read by very observant lay men. We always sense something “cold” emanating from the enemies’eyes and those planning evil and something “warming” radiating from the eyes of a true child, a friend’s eyes or eyes of strangers that bring good tidings.

Emotional disturbances, such as fear, anger, and disappointment   leave their subtle impressions in the eyes. Expressions, such as evil eyes, lonely look, forgiving look, empty look, weary look, romantic eyes, etc are used very commonly in our daily conversations,” he said.

He said iridology is a safe, non-intervention diagnostic technique, as it requires no needles and  anesthetic or drugs. Yet, it does provide a valuable guide to health and disease.

Ezengige continued: “If every doctor about to do surgery employed an iridologist as a diagnostician, many exploratory operations would be avoided. The eye is an extension of the brain, recording patterns relating to physical conditions of the body.”

According to him, iridology has its beginnings in Europe while Sclerology has its basis in the Chinese culture as well as in Native American oral tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Russia uses this tool extensively and it is taught in their medical schools. Why? It is affordable and less invasive.

‘’While the study of iridology is vast and intricate, everyone can glean valuable health information from the eyes – beginning with eye colour, as this determines what iridologists call one’s primary constitutional type.

“There are three primary constitutional types: brown eyes (Hematogenic), blue eyes (Lymphatic) and mixed brown/hazel eyes (Biliary). Each type is constitutionally predisposed to its own health challenges. Thus, there are supportive lifestyles, herbal, supplemental and dietary factors, that each type can do to promote balanced health.

‘’The eye’s colour alone reveals a great deal of positive information.

There are only two basic iris colors: blue, brown and a mixture of the two, appropriately called ‘mixed’. All irises can be placed in one of these colour groups. Green eyes do not really exist as the green appearance of the iris is usually due to discolouration or yellow patches in a blue or mixed colour iris. The effect of which are shades of blue from the iris shown through yellow discolouration.Mixing blue and yellow produces green. Although every iris is different, we generalise them according to the colour on health and disease probabilities,’’ he said.

‘’Brown-eyed people tend to have a faster reflex than those with blue eyes. Experiments show that the darker the eye, the faster your reflexes are. Peter Post of New York Hospital clinically tested reflex action by electronically dropping a ruler, accompanied by a buzzer or flash of light. Volunteers had to catch the ruler as it fell. Variables, such as gender, and age were taken into account, but the results showed that the darker the iris, the faster your reflexes. Brown-eyed people consistently caught the ruler more times than blue-eyed people. The colour of the iris is determined by melanin. Fair skinned (Caucasian) can have brown, blue and mixed colour iris as well as darker skinned people can have the same variations. This work has helped Iridologists understand the nature of their patients, and has highlighted the differences from one iris color to another. Blue Iris called Lymphatic has a random iris structure, appearing bluer towards the outer edge.Young people with blue eyes tend to have sinus, throat and breathing problems, such as asthma. In later life rheumatism and arthritis are frequent. The lymph system of the body is often overloaded and this is a good reason why lymph drainage massage works well for people with blue eyes. The kidneys can be sluggish and this may lead to water retention.’’

Ezengige also said: ‘’Brown Iris called Haematogenic is very densely pigmented and on close inspection resembles a velvet carpet. Very few individual fibres can be seen, viewing through a bio-microscope makes it easier. People with deep brown eyes usually need more vitamins and minerals in their diet. This genetically low mineral status often leads to glandular disturbances. Blood and circulation disorders are associated with this iris type and may cause problems, such as anaemia. Mixed Iris:called Biliary, may appear as hazel or green eyes. This category is a genetic mix of both blue and brown, over many generations. The iris may appear with patches of blue brown or orange in its fibers. This group often suffers from digestive disorders and blood sugar imbalances, particularly connected to the liver and gall bladder and pancreas function. Fluctuations in blood sugars may cause hypoglycemia (diabetes), with its symptoms of sudden, extreme tiredness, chocolate cravings and mood swings, among others. From just colour alone, the iris reveals much information.

“But the eye is a complex structure, a web of delicate fibres forming a unique pattern of lacuna, defects, pigment spots and other iris markings. It is this individual pattern that is studied by an iridologist. Not only the particular type of structure marking is noted, but also its location on the iris chart is important to establish the iris/body connection.’’

Giving further insight into how  Iridology and Sclerology work,  Ezengige said it is natural to ask:  why consult an Iridologist?

He said a Chinese proverb says: ‘A poor doctor cures; a good doctor prevents’.

”Iridology takes this to heart. All medicine longs to prevent a disease or disorder from occurring, any type of doctor would agree that it is easier, and more cost effective to nip disease in the bud. Iridology is ideally suited to prevention in the true sense. We all have genetic weaknesses of some type or another, if we were perfect we would be super-beings, not human.’’

The iridologist noted the  weakened organs or glands that may not be producing symptoms or even discomfort. By studying the iris markers, the iridologist could offer suggestions on how to avoid a disease or dysfunction occurring. By identifying the external stimuli that trigger the weakness to manifest itself; symptoms of disease may be avoided, or at least, delayed.

This could be clarified by iridology’s simple formula: Genetic Weakness + External Stimuli = Symptom (GW+ES=S). By carefully observing dietary intake, lifestyle, habits and environment, the iridologist could identify irritants to an individual’s health,” he explained.

“Living within the personal limitations of genetic inheritance may be the best way of achieving longevity. Human beings are immensely diverse and adaptable to their environment. If we recognise and identify any weaknesses that we may have, we are better able to avoid an external stimulus that would cause disease. For example, a person may smoke 20 cigarettes a day and live to a ripe old age – providing he does not have a genetic weakness that involves smoking. Conversely, a person may never smoke, yet develop lung cancer if he has a genetic lung marker,”Ezengige added.

  • Open your eyes

On Saturdays, I stay indoors to rest and
follow sporting trends on television. I
also relax by surfing the internet in the evenings for the big stories. But last weekend, I reluctantly sat up to watch the meaningless Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles and their Tanzanian counterparts inside the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo.

I wasn’t expecting a massacre of the Tanzanians. I knew we would be fielding a new team that needed time to blend. I wasn’t shocked that all our big boys reported to camp on Monday. See what it means to have a foreign coach? It also didn’t come as a surprise that those who had knocks with the European clubs came late but with evidence of receiving quality treatment.

I was excited that we had Gernot Rohr to underscore the fact that our foreign legion knows when we are serious with any adventure. I shouted when I didn’t see Sports Minister Solomon Dalung doing the introduction of players and match officials. I was bowled over by the foreign manager’s decision to field Kelechi Iheanacho for 90 minutes, in spite of the fact that he reported to the camp, having not played for his English side recently due to injury – lesson number one for Nigerian coaches.

I monitored how the manager pulled Iheanacho aside talking to him after watching him train on his own in the days leading to the match. Gohr knew Iheanacho would deliver but left the decision for the team’s medical crew. When the doctors cleared Iheanacho to play, it didn’t matter if he had not trained with others. With a Nigerian coach, the best Iheanacho would have got was a meaningless late substitution. And we would have been asking did Iheanacho play? Iheanacho’s club form was enough for Rohr to field him. And he justified that trust by scoring the only goal that separated Nigeria from Tanzania. Lesson number two for Nigerian coaches – fielding your best players at all times. No stories.

Aren’t the Nigerian coaches surprised it took Rohr just three training sessions to know that our best right back is former Golden Eaglets Captain Mohammed Musa, who stood like the proverbial Rock of Gibraltar in the Eagles defence? He held sway on the right wing intercepting passes by the Tanzanians. He gave the hitherto wobbly Eagles defence the steel to ward off the visitors. Of course, Gohr said our defence needed fortification. It showed with the defenders’ outing last weekend.  There wasn’t any nervy moment in the defence. I was excited with the way our taller players came back to defend during corner kicks.

Indeed, fielding Elderson Echiejile at the left back gave the Eagles width at the rear as he joined the attacking onslaughts against the visitors. Interestingly, Echiejile showed he had improved in recovering when he lost the ball. But in the team’s central defence, Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong were peerless, although the Tanzanians hardly troubled them.

What impressed me most about the team was the presence of younger boys as substitutes. It showed when the coach made his substitutions. Every change improved on the team’s performance. Who would have thought that Wilfred Ndidi, a former Eaglets star, would have fitted like glue when he replaced an injured Mikel? Lesson number three for Nigerian coaches – learning to take a risk on younger players. The Nigerian coach would have introduced Nosa Igiebor, hinging his decision on experience. When would the younger players grab this experience when they are always kept on the bench?

Little wonder people are dreaming of Nigeria securing the group’s qualification ticket. We can, if the players exhibit the kind of resolve to win matches which they display when they play for their European clubs. The players’ mentality towards national team matches must improve. They must understand that they should leave the Eagles at the level where they met it – the top echelon in Africa, to say the least. It is laughable that the Eagles are 16th in Africa. No coach enters the field to play. Players interprete the coach’s tactics on the pitch. We have made several changes in the coaching crew with no movement forward. It simply means that the players are the problem. It shouldn’t be because these boys excel in European clubs. It is, therefore, the belief that with a European manager, a new dawn beckons for Nigeria. Let it start now. The players must secure this ticket for the teeming Nigerian fans.

Was goalkeeper Carl Ikeme really tested? Rohr took a gamble on Ikeme, who arrived Uyo two days to the match. He didn’t trust those were in the camp. He opted for experience. Looking back, was Ikeme  worth the coach’s gamble? Not exactly, but we know his worth, although it is also wise for the coach to consider having a chat with the team’s former captain, Vincent Enyeama, to rescind his decision not to play for Nigeria. Rohr hasn’t worked with Enyeama before. He knows his worth and may be comfortable with Enyeama in goal than Ikeme. Rohr wants to close his eyes to the fact that his goalkeeping problem has been solved, with two renowned hands. I align with Rohr’s decision to have Enyeama back because the task of doing well at the Russia 2018 World Cup begins with the qualification matches.

Some people have expressed reservations with Enyeama’s return. They are asking what would happen to Mikel Obi’s captaincy. Mikel has turned a new leaf with his output in the national teams. Rohr certainly knows these details. I also don’t think that Enyeama wants to be captain again. Enyeama left the team because of the rift with the former coach, Sunday Oliseh. Enyeama also has good relationship with Mikel and could ignore the captaincy band. He could return to spite Oliseh. A pointer to Enyeama’s return to the Eagles rests with his post-match comments of the Tanzanian game. Enyeama was quoted to have applauded his mates, urging them to increase the momentum as the struggle for the World Cup ticket begins. Enyeama couldn’t have been bothered about the Eagles when Oliseh and Samson Siasia were in charge. So, good luck to Rohr. I feel strongly that Enyeama should return akin to what Lionel Messi did with Argentina.

I’m encouraged by Rohr’s resolve to invite others to the camp. His choice of Alex Iwobi and Etebo shows that he has been following our boys’ exploits in Europe. Players, such as Osimhen, Moses Simeon, Iheanacho, Moses, Muhammed, Shehu Abdullahi, Jamiu Alimi et al, capture the essence of developing the game from the grassroots. It raises the hope that Rohr understands the need for us to have a team with an average age of 21 years so that they can compete with others at the Mundial in Russia.

I was excited watching the Eagles return to the four-man midfield play which ensured that we dominated the Tanzanians, although it didn’t reflect in the scores, largely because our strikers were too anxious to impress the new manager. Iheanacho, Mikel, Victor Moses and Oguenyi Onazi are very talented players. Perhaps, Rohr needs to drop Onazi, if Etebo is fit. Etebo has shown the penchant for scoring goals with his long range shots. If we have two boys who can shoot the ball hard from the distance in our midfield, it would go a long way in increasing our goals haul, especially when the opposition has a very good goalkeeper like the Tanzanians. Again, Rohr could start Musa with Alex Iwobi upfront. Iwobi is slow but swift with the ball. He also can be calm in front of the goalpost like we have seen him do for the Barclays English Premier League side, Arsenal.

Odion Ighalo has been unlucky with the Eagles as our top striker. I agree with Victor Ikpeba that Ighalo should be more selfish with the ball. But Ighalo isn’t such a player. He could be introduced in the second half with specific instructions from the coach, having seen the first half. Brown Ideye and Sunday Mba were the pivot in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations feat in 2013. The Eagles lost its balance when Mba and Ideye were excluded from the team’s camp. Ideye isn’t as flamboyant as Austin Okocha; nor does he have the sublime skills of Nwankwo Kanu. He does the dirty job in the midfield with his impact only recognised by a good tactician. If our players learn to shoot accurately in front of the goalkeeper, we may not rush the quest for a striker yet.

Need I score the team? Rather, I’m impressed with the camaraderie Rohr has with his Nigerian assistants. He spoke glowingly about them. I was thrilled when an insider in the Eagles told me that Rohr assigned Imama Amamakabo to his match reading crew. Indeed, the source revealed that Rohr relied on this match-reading team’s remarks to chart his counter strategies as the game progressed. I wasn’t surprised, therefore, when Imama returned to Enugu Rangers, his Nigerian club, to guide the team to crush high-riding Rivers United 4-0 in one of the NPFL games.

Imama, Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu represent the best of our coaches in the domestic league in terms of records. It is also important to state that they are ex-internationals. I hope they can open their eyes and ears to listen to how the Germans prepare the Eagles for matches. They also must scribble down points during tactical discussions. They must ask the Germans questions on puzzles they cannot decipher. Learning is a continuum.

Salisu, Agu and Imama are gentlemen, not the boastful type. I expect peace within the group. They are not the flippant. There won’t be stories of infighting in the camp or tales of the unexpected. If Salisu, Agu and Imama understudy these Germans, they could be the Eagles’ next technical crew, who would have gained experience on the job and prosecuted a World Cup campaign, by the grace of God in Russia in 2018.

It won’t be out of place if they can ask their boss to talk to German clubs for them to have attachment training with the clubs to enhance their knowledge. Our football needs a new direction. We could copy the German model. After all they are the World Cup champions.

  • How to protect your eyes

Exercise more frequently. According to the AAO, some studies suggest that regular exercise – such as walking – can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70 percent.

    • Protect your eyes from harmful UV light. When outdoors during daytime, always wear sunglasses that shield your eyes from 100 percent of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. This may help reduce your risk of cataracts, pinguecula and other eye problems.
    • Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Numerous studies have shown that antioxidants can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. These antioxidants are obtained from eating a diet containing plentiful amounts of fruits and colorful or dark green vegetables.

Studies also have shown that eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids may reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration. Also, consider supplementing your diet with eye vitamins to make sure you are getting adequate amounts of the nutrients you need to keep your eyes healthy.

    • Get your eyes checked at least every two years. A comprehensive eye exam, including dilating your pupils, can determine your risk for major eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, which has no early warning signs or symptoms. An eye exam also can ensure that your prescription fo reyeglasses or contact lenses is up to date.
    • Don’t smoke. The many dangers of smoking have been well documented. When it comes to eye health, people who smoke are at greater risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, uveitis and other eye problems.

CHAN qualifier: Chikatara eyes debut goal against Burkina Faso

Abia Warriors marksman Chisom Chikatara is in good form going into the African Nations Championship qualifier against Burkina Faso at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium this weekend.

In two training matches against Shekarau Babes and Blessed Academy, the attacker notched up two braces in the second half.

”I hope to score against Burkina Faso. The first thing in your mind as a striker is to score goals and secondly you want to play well, so your team wins” Chisom Chikatara told news24.

”I will say my recent form is the handiwork of God and I am focused. I have been playing games and I have been consistent.”

The 20-year-old’s call-up to the home based Super Eagles will be the first time he has been officially invited to the national team, though he admitted that he previously trained with Nigeria’s Olympic Team before he got this recognition.

”I have been with the Under 23 national team, I wasn’t invited, I just went there on my own.

”There’s no difference between the training sessions I have with my club and what is going on in the Super Eagles. Football is the same language, the difference is not much” Chikatara added.

Asked to predict the outcome of the tie against Burkina Faso, he replied: ”I think we can win 3 – 0, 4- 0 or even more if we play well”.

Omar Assar eyes Quadri’s feat at ITTF World Cup in Sweden

Like Dina Meshref, Omar Assar has won everything at stake at the continental levels this year. Starting early in the year with the African Championships to African Cup and finally the African Games to remain the highest ranked African player in the world.

From today in Sweden, the 24-year-old Egyptian will be aiming to emulate Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri at the 2015 Men’s World Cup.

Quadri made it to the quarterfinal of the 2014 World Cup in Germany to become the first African to achieve such feat.

However, in few days he will be on duty as Africa’s sole flagbearer when the 2015 ITTF World Cup serves off in Sweden and the Egyptian believes with huge support from the continent as well as his level of preparation, he can repeat the feat achieved by Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri.

“My target is to be a good representative of Africa and to show that the African table tennis has been changed for better. I had a training camp in Germany for 10 days and before that I had a conditioning training for one week after the African Games. I feel very excited for the World Cup for the first time as I am looking forward to a very good performance and to see the effect of my efforts in the last few days. Also to take a cue from what Quadri Aruna did last year which was very respectful as a good ambassador for Africa,” he said.

Aside from aiming for the best outing, Assar will surely enjoy support from the home crowd as the city of Halmstad remains his residence while in Sweden. “All the best players of 2015 will be at the tournament and so the challenge is higher while my level of focus must be high for me to have the best possible performance too. I have already being told that all the Arab friends and Swedish who live in Halmstad and nearby are going to come and watch my matches with The Egyptian flag to support me . Also some famous Egyptian athletes who are residing in Europe now are going to be there to support me,” he boasted.

Specifically, Assar admitted that the victory in Congo Brazzaville would surely boost his confidence, “Congo Brazzaville win gives me confidence and the ability to represent such a big continent like Africa.”

Assar did not lack support from the Egypt Table Tennis Federation (ETTF) especially the President, Dr. Alaa Meshref and the ATTF boss, Khaled El-Salhy.

“The Egyptian federation is supporting me now especially after I qualified for Rio 2016 Olympic Games. I requested for a private coach and they have accepted so I am very thankful to Dr. Meshref for that. Also I must acknowledge the support of ATTF President, Mr. Khaled El-Salhy who is always following and trying to guide me on the best performance,” he said.

ODION Ighalo scored regularly for Watford as they won promotion back to the Premier League and it it was no surprise when former Nigeria U-20 skipper was called up by then Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi for the 2017 AFCON qualifier against Chad in Kaduna. He started the match on the bench.

“I have always considered it one of the greatest honours to represent Nigeria especially up to the senior level so I was excited to have been involved in that match against Chad,” he enthused. He talked on how he changed the course of the match though. “Well as I sat on the bench I was seeing the loopholes in their team that I thought I could exploit if I got called upon. So when I went on I was able to provide the assist for (Gbolahan) Salami then won the penalty,” he explained.

Not only did Ighalo win the penalty he was brave enough to collect the ball to take it himself. That was a bit bold for a debutant. “There was only Salami on the pitch amongst those the coach had designated as penalty takers but he had already scored a goal. In life and in football we have to be bold and take risks. My mind was focused that I will score and I did.”

Nigeria won that qualifier 2-0 but in between that and the next qualifier the NFF seemingly lost patience with Keshi and replaced him with former captain Sunday Oliseh. By the time the new coach released his list for the next matches Ighalo’s name was missing. As it is in Nigeria where there are more coaches than footballers there was an uproar. Ighalo stated his case rather eloquently when he scored on his Premier League debut with a beautifully taken goal at Everton.

  • Victor Obinna eyes Serie A return

Victor Obinna has revealed that he rejected advances from teams based in China and the MLS because he has unfinished business in the Serie A.

The out-of-favour Nigeria international ran out of contract with Lokomotiv Moscow at the end of last month but he didn’t get to play an official game for the Railwaymen all through his last season.

“Italy has remained in my heart, I’d go back again and in a position to give the best,” said Victor Obinna to gianlucadimarzio.com.

“I said no to China and MLS, I want to play in Europe and to show that I can still give my best. Who takes me is a bargain, I am charged and eager to score, maybe coming in double figures. ”

The former Inter Milan striker returned for a second stint with Chievo Verona in January 2014 but he was not acquired outright when the agreement with Lokomotiv Moscow ran out.

  • Log in Ben Bruce’s eyes

SIR: I wish to comment on the recent statement credited to Ben Bruce that he will donate his wardrobe allowance to Osun workers. I used to hold the Senator in high esteem but this statement of his has diminished my respect for him. Bruce is only courting controversy for the governing party. Bayelsa State, a PDP-controlled state that produced the immediate past president is also listed among states owing workers. This is in spite of its status as an oil producing state that receives 13 percent extra federal allocation.  Why not donate the allowance to his home state of Bayelsa instead?

Charity begins at home; let him remove the stone that is in his eyes before attempting to remove the sand in other people’s eyes.

I expect him to sponsor a motion on the floor of the Senate to stop the dubious furniture, wardrobe and car allowances in addition to the greedy, fat and gluttonous salaries they receive and ask the government to factor it into the various state allocations so that they can use it to clear the backlog of salaries. Had he sponsored a motion like this, he would have launched himself well into Nigerian politics; he was elected into the Senate to help in making good laws and not in courting and inciting needless controversies.
