  • Is this Nigeria?

Lawyer turned musician Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz the bad guy has been trending online since last week for reasons I don’t know and was not interested in knowing. The amount of information overload on social media is such that one has to choose what he or she wants to know to avoid unnecessary distractions.

It was not until last Thursday that a colleague asked if I had heard or watched the latest song by Falz titled This is Nigeria and I said I had not. He showed me the video and after watching, it struck me why he has been subject of discussion in many circles online and offline.

The song is a sad commentary on the situation of the country which vividly captures the breakdown of law and order in every sector of our society and the sordid situation we have found ourselves as a nation.

The lines below from the controversial songs are indeed a true reflection of what our dear country has become:

    This is Nigeria [yea]

    No electricity daily oh [eh]

Young people are still working multiple jobs

And they talk say we lazy oh

    This is Nigeria [eh]

    There’s plenty wahala sha

    Fulani herdsmen still dey slaughter

    Carry people dey massacre

    This is Nigeria

Bombs in my area, this is democracy

    Political hysteria

Yahoo yahoo don tear everywhere now

And we act like it’s so cool

Casting the p and being castigated just for trying to be noble

This is Nigeria, look at my nation ooh

Sarz stop me for road, any explanation,

You go talk am for station oh

Falz reminds me of late Afrobeat, king Fela Anikulapo-Kuti  who was more of a social crusader who sang many songs to campaign against injustice in the country.

Those in government and many others may not find the song funny. At a time we are trying to project a good image of the country and highlight the supposed dividends of democracy, Falz song underscores our motion without movement as a country.

Falz’s song questions the promise of change, but the lyrics are truths we have to live with and urgently do something about them.

How do we explain that indiscriminate killings and kidnappings by terrorists, herdsmen and other gangs of gunmen that has become the norm? Try as much as the security agents have, the killers have continued to have a free reign.

More than those we get to hear about, there are many unreported cases which make some parts of the country very unsafe more than ever before.

We are not at war, but we are having mass killings and burial. How did we get to this level of brigandage? Security men who are supposed to be law enforcement agents are the law breakers themselves.

In an explosive reporter’s diary last week, an   investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo paid his way to Lagos and back to Abuja with a car without any required paper.  At a point, a policeman who collected N20,000 from him advised that he should claim armed robbers took his bag when he is asked for his paper at the next check point!

Like Falz sang, This is Nigeria.

  • Falz chides critics of ‘This Is Nigeria’ video

Award-winning rapper, Folarin Falana, better known as Falz, has released a clip in which he addresses the criticisms that trailed the release of his ‘This is Nigeria’ video.

The video, which has been described as a State of the Republic address, is the remake of American singer and actor, Donald Glover’s ‘This is America’ which was released on Saturday, May 5.

Known by his stage name, Childish Gambino, Glover’s video sparked discussions on gun control, racism and violence within the American context.

In a similar fashion, Falz’s video, which was released last weekend and mirrors Glover’s, touches on issued that boggle the Nigerian system, including political hysteria, internet fraud, the state of the economy, insecurity, religion, lack of medical facilities, herdsmen crisis, and others.

However, criticism trailed the Nigerian artiste’s 3 minutes-42 seconds video for following the exact pattern of Glover’s video, employing the same visual concept.

Not one to take the criticism lying down, Falz responded with a 42 seconds clip in which he chided those who have chosen to ignore the message in the song.

“I just dey read comments online and I dey vex. And I dey vex because I dey see people dey talk say falz tha bahd guy is not original. You copied. Hello, do you think I’m not aware that Childish Gambino is the one that sang the original? You think I’ve not seen ‘This is America?’ Dude, that is the point.

“This is supposed to be a remake. It is supposed to be a cover. It is not supposed to be original. I’m not trying to make money off it. Now, the sooner you realise that you are supposed to pick up the message, or the numerous messages on the track , the better for your life, the sooner you start to act accordingly, the better for your own personal life. This is not business. This is a moral instruction. Wake up,” he said.

However, prior to Falz’s response, American rapper, Sean Combs, aka P.Diddy expressed his support for the track when he reposted clips of the video via Falz’s official Instagram page. “Sending love to Nigeria. So many great, beautiful artist changing the game!!!!  @falzthebahdguy,” he wrote.

Also, former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili was full of accolades for the singer’s effort. According to her, having watched the video on the instance of her son, she is more than convinced that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, referencing his activist father, Femi Falana.

“This apple did not fall far from the tree. This activist-artist brilliantly uses his music to fight for a just and good Nigeria. I love Falz’s brand of music. #FanClub,” she tweeted.

  • New music ‘group’ called chemistry

Falz and Simi are the new pair of artistes who have done several collaborations without belonging to the same band. This has given thoughts to a new kind of career relationship among artistes where chemistry may not only lead to great vibes, but also a lasting ‘cash and carry’ kind of musical relationship without the usual misunderstandings known to have split great bands.

Incidentally, the two singers came up with an EP titled “Chemistry’, containing the tracks; ‘Chemistry’, ‘Enough’, ‘Shake Your Body’, ‘Show Your Pepper’, ‘Foreign’, ‘Want To’, and ‘Cinderella’, as a way of taking their strategic relationship to the next level in this kind of new order. For Falz and Simi, this followed the huge fan attraction they got from earlier collabos like ‘Jamb Question’ and ‘Soldier’.

In the same spirit of collaboration, Falz’s sophomore studio album – a 17-tracker titled ‘Stories That Touch’ – is a collabo with 12 artistes, including Oyinkansola, Phyno, Chigurl, Simi, Reminisce, Sess, Reekado Banks, Poe, Chyn, Bez, M.I, and Show Dem Camp.

On the other hand, with ‘No Forget’ and ‘Take Me Back’ the sonorous Simi also has a career alliance with Adekunle Gold, apart from both of them being romantically linked. This was just as Big Brother Naija 2017 Housemate, Jon Ogah featured Adekunle Gold and Simi in the song, ‘Uncle Suru’.

The beauty of this fling is such that it is not only mutual and respectable to the parties, it is also refreshing to the fans. Thus, you find like-mind artistes coming back to do stuff together once the initial effort is well accepted.

For example, Skales and Burna Boy have done a couple of works together that have sat well with their fans. There is ‘Temper’, off the ‘Never Say Never’ album by Skales and ‘Gbefun One Time’ from the same album. Olamide on the other hand has featured the likes of Phyno, Timaya, Davido, Oritse Femi, Lil Kesh etcetera in his songs.

Apart from the combo collaboration between Falz and Simi, it is not that the concept is new among Nigerian artistes, one can only agitate for more as such efforts also give pep to the diversity of tunes which is the new order, especially in Africa.

Therefore, if the most unexpected break-up, as in the case of the P-Square brothers could happen, it is safe for fans who are somewhat at the receiving end to get used to occasional partnerships that will not end in the usual problems associated bandmates, and musical labels.

For example, Wizkid broke the family bond in the Banky W led E.M.E records that used to house his longtime friend Skales and others like Niyola and Shaydeeboi when he decided to go solo.

When Mo’hits broke up, it was for the same reasons of dissatisfaction with the contribution of the other party in terms of content and profit after what appeared a long period of tolerance.

There couldn’t be so much distant reasons why Plantashun Boiz, Styl Plus, Remedies, and KC-Presh among others parted ways in their musical careers. Often, ego and greed have been attributed to divorce among musical groups whereby after breakthrough, some artistes suddenly realise that the signed contract is not profitable to them in terms of profit sharing.

I wish to say that under this new order; the type that exists between Falz and Simi, it is difficult to beef one’s partner for disloyalty, profit sharing, low contribution etcetera, because if you didn’t find anything great in the other guy, you don’t need the collaboration. Besides, since it is only a fling, separations in this case will go on almost unnoticeable.
