  • 9 Interesting ways to rock a Suit

Suits are a work wear staple in the wardrobes of most professional women, either because it’s a required part of your office dress code, or you simply love how you look in one. It can however get boring. Here are nine ways you can put a new spin on your suit game, simply by playing with color, silhouettes and accessories.

Consider other colours aside Black and Navy

Even though you don’t have to wear the rainbow, but adding more colour to your work wardrobe rather than the usual neutral palette is a great way to go. Rich colors like burgundy or olive green is refreshing without being too crazy.

    Wear a Printed Shirt Underneath

If you’re wearing this in a work environment, make sure the neck is cut a bit higher or cover up with a brooch. But the general idea is that layering a blazer over a printed blouse makes an otherwise plain gray suit much more fashionable, and modern.

    Consider a Looser Silhouette

There’s a time and place for fitted pencil skirts, but how can you say no to an equally delicious wide-leg pant? To avoid entering “kid wearing her dad’s clothes” territory, make sure that, even if roomier, your suits are always tailored to your body , especially the shoulders and the waist.

Dress It Down with a T-Shirt and Sneakers

If silk blouses and heels aren’t really your thing or  you need to travel for work, pair your suit with casual basics like a plain white tee and simple sneakers for some airport chic. There’s something so effortless about this look that makes the whole concept far more approachable.

    Don Loafers

This is kind of the women’s look of our dreams. Instead of fighting the masculine connotations of a suit with feminine shoes, embrace the menswear trend and pair it with a cool pair of loafers. The bare sliver of ankle is the icing on the cake.

    Or Rock Something Striped Underneath

If you’re like most ladies you already wear striped shirts regularly, so why not wear one under a crisp suit? The resulting look is slightly more casual and really cool.

    Mix Feminine and Masculine

This look is proof that you don’t need crazy colors or dramatic details to make a classic suit look perfectly modern. The contrast between the androgynous buttoned-to-the-top shirt and the undeniably feminine pointy-toe pumps is really interesting, and the cross body bag makes it even more so.

Wear It With a Skinny Scarf

A super-simple way to jazz up a plain black suit is to wrap a trendy skinny scarf around your neck. Think of this as a more feminine (and chic) version of a guy’s tie.

    Or Try Rocking a Bandanna

This might not work at a more strict work environment, but a bandanna is an even more fashion-forward alternative to a skinny scarf, especially in cold weather. Best of all, you can get one for, a few hundred naira.

  • Things stylish women never do

    Things stylish women never do

Every woman has her morning routine, the things you do from the time you get out of bed in the morning, until you head out the door to work. From taking a bath, tohitting the gym; meditating, or having a cup of tea, we all have our peculiar routine when it comes to starting a new day. But, one thing we all have no choice but get dressed for whatever lies ahead. With our constant daily to-do lists, it’s not unusual to spend an entire day running from responsibility to responsibility, which is why this year afunctional wardrobe is a must.

When it comes to the dos and don’ts of getting dressed, the most inspiring women share a common trait: They choose comfort and versatility when picking out their outfit.Whether that means never wearing heels, or staying away from anything too restrictive, here are a few dos and don’ts to note when getting ready.  We hope these tips will make dressing up in the morning that much easier.

Don’t: Wear Anything That’s Not Versatile Enough to Survive the Whole Day

One word that should define the modern woman’s morning outfit decisions should be comfort.  Strive for comfort at all times. For some, it may mean never wearing heels. For others it could be wearing platforms or wedges. And don’t forget that those sneakers are in right now.

Don’t: No visible panty lines please!

“No visible panty lines” is another important rule to keep in mind when preparing for the day.  That way you can do your work, or go about your business without worrying that you are scandalizing anyone, or giving a negative image.

    Don’t:  No overmatching.

And while picking the right underwear for the day ahead is crucial, another big no-go when getting dressed, being too matchy-matchy (except for denim on denim). Except you are doing the monochrome thing, your clothes, and accessories don’t necessarily have to always match, that is so old school.

    Don’t: Sacrificing comfort for glamour.

Always dress in pieces that make you comfortable. For some it may mean not to dressing too young, or flamboyantly. Its okay to wear trends, but not at the expense of comfort. For work, avoid pieces that are restrictive or uncomfortable, for the simple reason that they will just irritate you within an hour.

Don’t: Putting on makeup before getting dressed

When it comes to dressing for work, when getting ready in the morning, never put on makeup before getting fully dressed.

    Don’t: Wearing leggings to work

And whatever you do, never wear leggings to the office, except you are off to the gym. And when you do, wearing a G-string would be a good idea.

     Don’t: Wearing anything distracting

For busy professionals, and entrepreneurial women a busy schedule means that you are constantly on the go, it’s all about clothing that can get you through anything. Entrepreneurship leaves you much less time for everything else, so versatility and comfort become increasingly important filters for one’s personal style.  Avoid anything that distracts you from focusing on what’s important; instead choose to gravitate toward real, beautiful clothes that you can live and work in.

Don’t: Getting dressed without considering the weather

When it comes to morning rituals, one often overlooked factor is getting dressed without considering the weather. Walking to work every day means that being prepared is key to making through the day unscathed. So you can choose to consider  the weather forecast, or face the consequences at your own peril.

  • The one packing mistake we all make

The one packing mistake we all make

My friend Eji recently contacted about helping her with her packing. She confesses to being “the worst suitcase packer of all time”. I am not a bad packer myself, but she also admits to being “the worst un-packer”. She confesses, “I will pack for a trip in 30 minutes only to return and leave the suitcase in its exact state for weeks after”. My friend is a busy professional, whose recent promotion means that she is doing more and more travelling, and is in desperate need of an expert to help sort out her packing challenges.

See the packing mistake we are all guilty of, and tips to avoid it.
The major mistake we most often make is aimlessly throwing everything in a suitcase without planning, organization, or any effort whatsoever. Ahead, prepare yourself to do some personal reflecting on your other packing mistakes as you take hold of tested solutions for a disheveled and over packed suitcase.

THE #1 PACKING MISTAKE IS: AIMLESSLY THROWING EVERYTHING INTO A SUITCASE

One big packing mistake that people make is not taking the time to make sense of their suitcases. They grab items that they want to bring on their trips and just fill up their bags with them. Over packing is an issue too (getting into that mindset of Oh, I’ll definitely want to wear this since I’ll be in the Bahamas—when you know very well that that romper never looks good on you and being in the Bahamas won’t change that).

    PACKING SOLUTIONS:

    Separate items by type.
Separate items by type (clothing together, accessories together, etc.) and either use the pockets or mesh/clear packing bags to separate them. For example, keep the big and bulky clothing in the main pocket and small clothing like socks and underwear in one of the small pockets.
    Pack exact outfits.
Do your best to plan out exact outfits and think when you’ll wear what. Keep in mind that versatility is of utmost importance when you pack. Those trousers that you can dress up or down to a variety of places? Pack them!
    Store toiletries in clear bags.
Store all toiletries in a clear plastic bag. This way you can see what’s inside and keep everything contained and away from your clothing.

  • Siju Iluyomade’s fashion sense

Among  Nigerian women of God, few can compete with Pastor Siju Iluyomade in the fashion and influence stakes. The blindingly beautiful wife of Pastor David Iluyomade, head pastor of RCCG City of David Parish, has it all when it comes to fashion and style. She has the looks, the regal appearance, the graceful manner, the eloquent speech, the luxurious wardrobe and the ample taste in jewellery and shine things, which all come together to make her the complete package among fashionable female pastors in the country. Even though she co-presides over the richest branch of RCCG in Nigeria, the wealthy women who troop to the church every Sunday are no match for her. The elegant pastor dwarfs all of them in terms of the breadth of her accoutrements and expensive assemblage of designer accessories and exquisite wear.

Pastor Siju is not in the fashion game to play. The fashion labels she patronizes include Zagliani, Hermes, Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Christian Louboutithe élite of the élite. Not limiting herself to making mouth-opening fashion statements, Pastor Siju, through her pet project, Arise Women, has also moved into social advocacy. She has also teamed with other powerful women in the society to champion the cause of the Nigerian woman.

  • Police stray bullet kills fashion designer

Police stray bullet kills fashion designer

    •Family demands justice

A fashion designer, who was last Wednesday hit by stray bullets allegedly fired by a policeman attached to the Lion Building Division on Lagos Island died yesterday.

Mr Hassan Taiwo sustained severe injuries on his hands, thighs and stomach.

The policeman was said to have fired the shots that killed Taiwo while pursuing hoodlums around the popular Folawiyo Market on the Island.

It was learnt that the 35-year-old victim, was performing ablution in preparation for the afternoon prayer when the corporal in company of his three colleague fired the bullet that hit him in the stomach.

The Nation gathered that the policemen attempted to leave the victim who was bleeding profusely at the scene but were prevented by the traders.

He was reportedly rushed to the General Hospital, Lagos Island.

The hospital authorities demanded police reports and an initial payment of N100,000 before treatment could begin.

Taiwo was left writhing in pains for over two hours.

He later underwent a surgery after his colleagues at the market paid the money.

Taiwo’s relative who declined giving his name said officers at the Lion Building Division were not bothered about saving Taiwo’s life but were only interested in supporting the policeman, while the victim suffered excruciating pain.

The victim’s distraught wife, Rukayat, said: “I went to Palmgrove on that day and he called me, asking about my welfare and my trip. I asked him same and he said there was no problem. While returning, I went straight to his shop just to check on him. I didn’t even know what had happened. They told me he went out. A woman later told me that some policemen shot my husband while he was performing ablution. I went straight to the hospital and found him on the bed, swollen and changed.

“Bullets penetrated his stomach, thighs and hands. Traders from the market were already there, rallying round to raise money for his treatment. He was taken to the theatre for surgery that night and thankfully, it was successful. Since he was brought to the ward, the family has been responsible for his treatment.

“He had taken four pints of blood; my friends and his (Taiwo) elder sister’s friends had to donate blood while the hospital kept demanding more money.

”We didn’t see anything from those police officers. All we heard was that the police officer had been locked up and they started disturbing us to come and sign that we weren’t interested in following up the case so as to save the officer from dismissal.”

The mother of four urged the Lagos State Government to ensure the officer face the law.

“I have four kids and the last is one-year-old. It was my co-tenant that gave me N500 for their feeding this (Friday) morning. Government should please save us from police officers’ indiscriminate shooting. How can they storm a densely populated market and started shooting anyhow? The officer must be punished to deter others from such act.”

A trader who raised the N100,000 for initial treatment, Shola Mogaji, said: “The government also should assist victims in emergency situation, so they don’t need to wait for people to contribute money before they are treated. They asked for a police report, we went looking for the radiologist for x-ray and they said he wasn’t around. We waited for almost two hours before the doctor came and said he was ready to do the operation without x-ray because if we allowed that victim to stay more than necessary, the reverse would have been the case.”

A community leader and activist, Prince Apata Akinsemoyin, condemned the officers’ action, urging police authorities to ensure justice was done for the victim.

”This is not the first time people are being shot indiscriminately by men of the Lion Building Division. On March 29, 2014, one Rasheed Oludegun was shot dead. The Lagos State Police Command should call its men to order and ensure justice is done, Akinsemoyin said.

  • ‘Fashion runs in my family’

    ‘Fashion runs in my family’

ELCharles Erhabor is the CEO of ElCee Modelling Agency, which continually scouts for beautiful new faces. In this interview with KEHINDE OLULEYE, the fashion designer, an actor, and model talks about the challenges facing the fashion industry, passion for the job and his upcoming fashion fair.

WHAT inspired you to dump modelling for fashion? You can’t separate modelling and fashion. So, it’s not like I dump modelling for fashion. I took time to develop my dreams on fashion. I am still very much a model and I even act. Fashion is the common factor in entertainment. Modelling and acting is a promotional and marketing strategy for my designs, because I’m the brand of my designs. I was inspired by my parent to go for fashion. My dad was a fashionista and my mum is a fashionista. I learnt how to sketch from my dad; he will sketch a design and give it to a tailor to do the sewing. My grandfather was a tailor. I think fashion is in our blood line.
For how long have you been doing this?
I have been doing this for eleven years.
Before opening your retail shop, how were you operating?
I sketch a design, get a fabric, and take the design and fabrics to a good tailor who will bring it to life (do the sewing). Sometimes, we work together, especially when the designs are complicated. I decided to go and learn how to sew when some of my tailors were disappointing me.
Apart from men’s clothing, what other fashion items are you into?
I am into women clothing too, and I intend going into beads, shoes, bags, belts, hats and caps production.
Being around for a while, you must have witnessed a lot of changes in fashion?
Yes, in fact it is a revolution that is ongoing. It is like what happened in the music industry, a drastic change. It’s what I described as an epidemic of “WEARd fever” and it’s spreading fast. It has no vaccine.
And what do you think is the reason for this?
Change is the only thing constant in life, as a nation, we are experiencing change. And it’s affecting the fashion industry as well. The change in the fashion industry is happening very fast because Nigerians love fashion. Fashion is synonymous with everybody on planet earth. No one can do without fashion.
Why is it a general belief that women’s fashion is more rewarding than men’s?
Emphatically yes . Men will do more bargaining with you but women will do little because they are anxious to have it and wear it. It’s true that female customers are easier to deal with.
What kinds of fabric do you love working with?
I work with all kinds of fabric. It’s up to a designer to turn a low quality fabric into a pure stock.
    Who are El Charles target?
My targets are the movie stars, models, musicians and politicians.
What is your upcoming fashion fair all about?
It’s going to be the first of its kind in the town of Alagbado and its environs. My models (ElCee Models) will be hitting the runway. The fashion fair is aimed at challenging and arousing creativity amongst fashion designers and practitioners, it’s also a platform to bring together fashion designers. I am also using the medium to unveil our female collections.
What are the challenges faced in the course of doing your business?
Electricity is our major challenge. We work in an environment where electricity power is unstable. There are some sewing and tailoring machines that runs on electricity.
What is the ABC of a good jacket?
The ABC of a good jacket is the fabric, the cutting and stitches. Not necessarily the design or the style. If you have a good style or design and the cutting and stitches are poor, the jacket will be an unripe mango, it can’t sell!
How will you rate Nigerian designers with their foreign counterparts?
Nigeria designers are at the same level with their foreign counterparts. The only difference is that, they have good working environment and they have easy access to funds. They can acquire all the sewing and tailoring machines they need for excellent result.
    Describe your style?
My style is classy, flashy and dashy… it’s simply ‘Akomended’.
    Are you a label freak?
Every designer needs a label. But then the label does not determine a good design. The designs make the label to stand in the market place.
    What determines what you wear?
The event or occasion determines what l wear. And I must feel good with whatever l am putting on, otherwise there is no point putting on a particular dress, if it doesn’t make you feel good.

  • Fashion meets music on International Jazz Day

Fashion meets music on International Jazz Day

•To feature America’s Kirk Whalum, Yinka David, Darey Art-Alade, others

As countries all over the world will, this April, celebrate the International Jazz Day; a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)’s campaign for the promotion of global unity, peace and dialogue, Nigeria will be adding fashion, a creative non-oil sector initiative to make élan of the day.

Tagged Runway Jazz, the three-day event scheduled to take place at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, is being put together by Sweet Sound African Promotions; a rising seven-man band of classical music artistes, and Neo Mantra Ltd; producers of the popular Native and Vogue Port-Harcourt International Fashion & Design Week.

In line with the core principles of UNESCO, April 30, each year, is dedicated to bringing together communities, schools, artistes, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world, to celebrate and learn about jazz – its roots, future and impacts; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication.

Spanning April 29 to May 1, the Nigerian version, according to Afolabi Oke of Sweet Sound African Promotions, is beyond a show.

“It is an experience that defines the impact of music on everyday life and allows us to express our culture in such a way that we encourage peace and unity, first among amongst ourselves as a people, and then between Nigeria and the rest of the world. It speaks to the minds of artistes to challenge and channel their creativity into a great cause,” he said.

Headlining the show is American Grammy-winner, Kirk Whalum, a veteran smooth jazz saxophonist who represents a unique class of artistes with a rich repertoire of sounds including Pop, Gospel, R&B, Smooth Jazz, Instrumental Pop, Quiet Storm and Urban and Contemporary Jazz music among others.

Some of Nigerian finest on the show’s line-up are Omawumi, Yinka Davies, T Mark, Darey Art-Alade, Tosin Alao and the Sweet Sound band.

Also speaking about the forthcoming event in Lagos, on Monday, Managing Director of Neo Mantra, Nkiruka Oguadinma says, “Runway Jazz is also designed to showcase our proudly Nigerian (and African) culture, talents and products to all around the world and in so doing, recognise some of Nigeria’s greatest music icons.”

The music veterans to be recognised, according to Oguadinma, include “King Sunny Ade, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, Sir Victor Olaiya and Sir Victor Uwaifo – whose achievements on Africa’s music landscape both home and abroad have made them exemplary ambassadors of Nigerian music and symbols of our cultural heritage.”

For the runway segment, organisers say there will be a snazzy and edgy runway show featuring top models and designers, with an avant-garde and glamorous collection of clothes and fashion accessories led by Frank Osodi of Bunor Creazioni.

Others additions to the show include a special masterclass and mentoring session with Kirk Whalum for music enthusiasts and students and an exclusive fine dining experience with Kirk Whalum to round off the event.
