  • ASUU urges Fashola to rescue LASU from ‘tyranny’

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abuja Zone, has faulted the leadership style of the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. John Obafunwa.

The union also called on the visitor to the university and Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) to rescue the situation.

Coordinator of ASUU, Abuja Zone, Dr. Suleimen Mohammed, told journalists in Abuja that the VC should be called to order for victimizing ASUU members and reducing promotion criteria to mere reward system.

He said: “As we know, evil is contagious and like an epidemic, would soon spread across the universities in Nigeria. ASUU-ABUJA Zone hereby calls on well-meaning Nigerians to join forces with ASUU to crush this evil that has crept into LASU before it destroys the university. In the same vein, the Union calls on the Visitor to the University and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fasola (SAN), to urgently come to the aid of the university and rescue it from tyranny, misrule and mediocrity, so as to restore the eroded past glory of the University.

“Promotion amongst academics in any normal University is based on scholarly productivity and time-in rank provisions as specified in the Appointments and Promotions guidelines of a University. However, Obafunwa has eroded this culture in the Lagos State University. He has reduced promotions criteria to mere reward system, to reward those who assist him in his maladministration and misrule; yea, those who help him to destroy LASU. While J. O. Obafunwa is yet to circulate the Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) Forms for the 2013 promotion exercise as stipulated in the promotions guideline of LASU, Obafunwa has selectively promoted his cronies and partners in crime!

“Apart from this selective promotion programme for cronies, Obafunwa introduced an alien concept into the promotion exercise of the academics at LASU. He devised a new term promotion, ‘promotion to vacancy’ in LASU. Under this scheme, academics are supposed to be promoted if and only if there is vacancy for such promotion. This is worrisome and betrays the inexperience of the Vice Chancellor in the proper running of a University system. The truth is that professors in a particular department have their areas of expertise and one cannot block the promotion of another.

“Only recently, Obafunwa and his stooges/cronies turned their destructive machinery against the incumbent Chairperson of ASUU-LASU, Dr Adekunle A. Idris, stripping him of the PhD he earned several years ago, all in the name of the Senate of the Lagos State University not properly wording the degree.

“The sin of these men for which they and many others in the Lagos State University are being persecuted is simply their insistence on observance of due process and strict adherence to best academic practices. We believe these men are men of courage who dare to fight for justice for all and specifically for the system in which they work- LASU.”

Present at the briefing was the former ASUU President and trustee member, Dr. Dipo Fashina who also said strike may not be ruled out of this situation if nothing is done adding that justice and equality must prevail. He said ASUU has held series of strike for the same cause in the past and that the voice of the union is very strong on issues like this.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, yesterday hosted a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants, who contested the governorship primaries of the party in the state, commending their conduct during the primaries. He urged them to rally round the party’s flag bearer, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, for the campaigns ahead.

Those in attendance at the meeting included Ambode; his running mate and Secretary to the State Government, Dr (Mrs) Oluranti Adebule; Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; former Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr Tola Kasali; Senator representing Lagos West, Senator Ganiyu Solomon; former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Supo Shasore, SAN, Mrs Adetokunbo Tobun-Agbesanwa, Mr Abayomi Sutton and Mr Lanre Ope.

The governor, who spoke at the Lagos House, Ikeja, added that there was a need to build the team for the governorship candidate, suggesting that even if meant offering the people who helped in their various campaigns, they should all rally round the party’s flag bearer.

“The candidate has to get on the road from yesterday. And nothing would be more enabling and more intimidating for the opposition than to see all the aspirants together with the winner”, he said.

Fashola noted that it was a matter of managing time, stressing that once or twice, the aspirants should find the time so that they can give the flag bearer the needed push to go forward with the campaigns.

He congratulated the candidates for making Lagos proud with the way they conducted themselves during the Lagos APC primaries, adding that it served as a push for the bigger convention of the APC at the national level which turned out to be a success.

He stressed that many of the presidential candidates borrowed a leaf from the way the Lagos aspirants conducted themselves, adding that he is yet to learn from any state where there were as many as 13 contestants in a delegates election in the current dispensation where there was no bickering.

Governor Fashola said all of them embodied the spirit of excellence, adding that this informed his delight at their conduct during the primaries.

Also speaking, the Lagos State chapter of the APC, Chief Henry Ajomale thanked the aspirants for the spirit of sportsmanship that they displayed during and after the primaries.

He said since the process has now been concluded, what is left is for everyone to rally round Ambode to ensure the success of the party at the 2015 gvernorship polls.

Addressing the large gathering comprising judges, lawyers traditional rulers, religious leaders, relatives of the newly sworn-in judges and their well-wishers, Fashola described Osinbajo as the brain behind the transformation of the state judiciary.

According to him, “Prof. Osinbajo has contributed tremendously to the state judiciary, the vision of building an efficient and incorruptible judiciary started under his watch as the Attorney General of Lagos State. • No corrupt judge in Lagos, says Fashola

No corrupt judge in Lagos, says Fashola

The number of judges in Lagos State has risen to 54 with the swearing-in of four new ones.Though the state parades the highest number of judges in the country, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola is unhappy that only four out of seven scaled the hurdles of the National Judicial Council (NJC), reports ADEBISI ONANUGA.

When Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola swore-in four new judges, he could not hide his anger that the National Judicial Commission (NJC) chose four of the seven recommended for the job.

Their appointment has brought to 54 the number of High Court judges in the state – 39 women and 15 men.

Governor Fashola wondered why the NJC did not approve the seven names submitted to it for consideration as judges.

“We submitted seven names for consideration as judges and out of which only four were approved,” he said.

He said states and not the Federal Government should determine the number of judges needed in their states, as the responsibility of providing the facilities needed by the judges lies with the state.

The inauguration held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.

The new judges include Justice Olamide Akinkugbe, who, until her appointment, was the Chief Registrar of the High Court. Others are Justice Serifat Sonaike, Justice Abisoye  Bashua and  Justice Abdulfattah Lawal.

Fashola expressed conviction that there is no corrupt judge in the state judiciary. He added that in the last 16 years, ‘’issues of corruption in the Lagos judiciary are no longer there’’.

The governor challenged the new judges to take the lead in promoting law and order to build a better judiciary not just in the state, but in the country. ”You have chosen a very sensitive role to perform and hence the responsibility of performing this role without been biased lies on you,” he said.

He admonished the judges to be incorruptible and courageous, urging them not to be biased and to, at all times, ensure that they balance their social and personal lives  with their official duties.

”We expect superhuman conduct from you judges. You must be above suspicion and should not be biased. Judges should be incorruptible and courageous,” he said, adding: “You need to be knowledgeable and be familiar with business development all over the world in order to ensure justice.”

He said the state has provided enabling environment and infrastructure for judges to perform and that this, according to him, include regular power supply to all the courts; a combined High and Magistrate Courts at Ikorodu; the new courts at Epe and  Badagry and a new Magistrate Court at Ikeja, among others.

The state Chief Judge, Justice Oluwafunmilayo Atilade, said the ceremony was the climax of an appointment process which, according to her, the judges were found to be qualified.

She emphasised that their appointments were on merit, urging them to be disciplined, focused, incorruptible, diligent and committed to their duties.

She urged them to live up to their callings by being faithful and truthful to inspire hope and confidence in the judiciary.

Earlier, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, described the judiciary as an indispensable arm of the government without which the society becomes ungovernable.

He said the vacancies in the state judiciary had necessitated the search and intensive screening of  qualified candidates to fill the positions, adding that it culminated into the recommendation of the best to the NJC which screened and recommended four of them to the governor for appointment.

The Commissioner noted that such appointments were awaited with eager expectation by both the legal professionals and the  public because of the title and distinction attached to the office, and more importantly, the role judges play in the society.

“In accordance with powers conferred by the Constitution, a Judge of the High Court of Lagos State shall have in court the unlimited jurisdiction prescribed in Section 272 of the Constitution to hear and determine both civil proceedings and any matter of liability in respect of an offence committed by a person,” Ipaye said.

He added that judges’ judicial powers are very wide and they extend to all matters between persons, or between governments or between the authority and any person in Nigeria, and to all actions and proceedings relating thereto.

“Judicial powers also reach further to criminal jurisdiction and the imposition of appropriate penalties, extending notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the Constitution, to all inherent powers and sanctions of a court of Law,” Ipaye said.

The Attorney-General while presenting the new judges to the governor confirmed that conditions precedent to the ceremony were fulfilled.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Justice  Akinkugbe said they accepted the appointment with the full realisation of the responsibility imposed on them. She assured that they would not fail in their duties to the state and the judiciary.

While thanking Governor Fashola, the Chief Judge and the judiciary for having faith and confidence in them, she promised that they would all serve with dignity.

Justice Akinkugbe, 52, is a 1983 History graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Warwick, Coventry, England, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Law in 1986.

On completion of her Youth Service, she joined Olakunle Morohundiya Chambers and Chief Kunle Oyewo before moving to the magistracy in 1999.

Justice Sonaike rose through the ranks to become Chief Magistrate, a position she held until her appointment as a judge.

She was the Coroner Magistrate for Epe Magisterial District, member, Certified Institute of Shipping and the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association.

Justice Bashua, son of Alhaji Mikhail Bashua (SAN), obtained an LL.B. from the Lagos State University (LASU) in 1998. He had earlier obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History from same university in 1985. He was called to bar in 2000 and started his legal career the same year. He was in his father’s Chambers until his new appointment.

Justice Lawal graduated, topping his class as the “Best Student” of the Faculty of Law, in 1995 from the University of Maiduguri.

He had his Youth Service at the Nigerian Law Publications Ltd, the law reports company of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN). He was later moved to the Chambers.

The church averred that after applying for building plan approval from the respondents and it was not forth coming within the regular period, the claimants through Pastor Orisejafor made due enquires, wrote several letters and held meetings with the former and present governors, Bola Tinubu and Fashola respectively.

The claimant argued that in March last year, it received a letter from the defendants directing them to submit some certain documents to facilitate the process of the approval of the building plan which it complied with.

But while it was still awaiting the building plan approval in order to continue with the building, the claimant said it suddenly discovered that the defendants had pasted a certain contravention notice dated January 20 on its fence.

    Vote Ambode, Fashola urges Lagosians

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has urged residents to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, to sustain the programmes of his administration.

Before the APC primary election, the governor said he would support whoever emerged the candidate.

Speaking at the Lagos Sea Food Festival 2014 at the Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Fashola said supporting Ambode and the APC would  ensure that the state continued to enjoy good governance and high performance.

Noting that this year’s edition of the festival would be his last as governor, he said: “I urge you all to support the new APC governorship candidate; support him, support the party and make sure that the festival continues”.

He told the crowd of fishermen and women as well as other stakeholders at the event that “if you want this to continue, you have a role to play; you have to register and you have to collect your Permanent Voter Cards and then you can use your vote to choose what you want”.

“So, if you want this Sea Food Festival to be here next year, if you want Count Down to be here next year, if you want Beach Soccer to be here next year, the only way you can get them is to vote the government which is providing these activities in Lagos. So, if you want to keep them, you must do your part. Vote APC.

“I hope that you will all do what is necessary to sustain these activities.”

Also speaking at the 10 Degree Events Centre, Oregun, venue of the fifth edition of the Youth Stakeholders’ Forum organised by the State’s IGNITE Enterprise Partnership Project in conjunction with the After School Graduate Development Centre (AGDC), Fashola said the people must do the right thing to sustain the government’s programmes.

“This intervention and several others that have uplifted the lives of unemployed youths have been made possible with taxpayers’ money.

“So if you want continuation, you know what steps to take during the next election,” the governor said.

Ambode has reiterated his intention to open up Lagos for a more conducive business environment and investment opportunities.

He spoke at a thanksgiving service at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Glover Road, Ikoyi, Lagos and later at a Meet-the-People reception in Epe.

“We have a legacy to build upon, and it is our collective responsibility to build on the progress that Lagos has witnessed in the last 15 years,”he said.

According to the former State Accountant-General, the last 15 years had witnessed an irreversible growth and development “of our great state with a foundation laid by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 and 2007”.

“The consolidation and actualisation of that growth, of which we are all living testimonies, have been achieved by Governor Fashola.”

The candidate added that it was important to reiterate that the foundation laid by the two  administrations must never be destroyed but built upon.

“I wish to restate my promise, therefore, that I commit to the continuation of excellence and the progress of all Lagosians.”

Ambode said his core message stood on the acronym LAGOS, which, he explained, meant Leadership, Accountability, Good Governance, Opportunities and Service.

“My mission and vision, therefore, is to create a clean, secure and prosperous Lagos State that is driven by a vibrant economy and supported by quality service, equity and justice; a Lagos where no one is left behind and where no one is discriminated against on account of age, religion, creed or origin.

“In building on the legacies of the last 15 years, it is important to expand the frontiers of doing business in this state that has the potential to be one of the top five economies in Africa.

“Lagos deserves nothing less and this shall continue to be part of my message to every Lagosian as we begin to solicit their votes.”

The candidate said his sterling experience in public service over 27 years would be a priceless asset to his administration, if elected governor in 2015.
