  • 73 robbers, 8 policemen killed in Lagos

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, on Thursday revealed that about 73 armed robbers and eight policemen have been killed in Lagos during exchange of gun fire between the police and robbers in the last one year.

Aderanti disclosed this at the 8th Town Hall Meeting on Security held at the City Hall, Lagos Island.

He said the robbers were killed between November 2013 and October 2014, adding that the police also arrested 423 armed robbers and foiled 372 armed robbery incidents within the period.

The commissioner also added that the police recovered 255 arms, 4,043 ammunitions and 560 stolen vehicles.

Other statistics as disclosed by the police boss include, 833 stolen vehicles in Lagos in the last 12 months, with the breakdown revealing that 358 vehicles snatched by robbers at gun point, 468 others stolen from where they were parked and seven others driven away.

He added that there were 68 armed robbery incidents in Lagos in the last 12 months, while 280 people were murdered in Lagos in the same period.

He explained that reasons behind the high cases of murder in the state, include gangsterism and rivalry, motor transport unionism, thuggery, youthful exuberance, unemployment and politics.

In his remark, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said the logic behind the fund was to have a platform to tackle security challenges in the state.

“We use our resources to protect ourselves and others instead of using it to protect ourselves alone. And that is where the real battle against crime begins, at the organic cutting edges of the agencies in the divisions and area commands within the states, with effective visible patrol presence and early intervention on a daily basis,” the governor said.

Fashola appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to continue to support the STF, saying that any setback allowed would have untold consequence.

Fashola presents 2015 budget to House

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), on Monday presented a budget proposal of N489.69 billion for the 2015 fiscal year to the Lagos State House of Assembly for approval.

The budget which is the last to be presented by the governor is the same as that of 2014, which stood at N489.69 billion.

The budget comprises capital expenditure of N249.232 billion (51 per cent of the total budget) and a recurrent expenditure of N239.948 billion (49 per cent).

Fashola said the budget retains its zero deficit in order to ensure that the next government does not inherit a deficit.

The capital to recurrent ratio of 51:49 for 2015 is the same as that of the 2014 budget.

A breakdown of the budget showed that Economic Affairs has the highest allocation of N146.305 billion, followed by General Service (N107.69 billion), Housing and Community Amenities (N82.14 billion), Education (N49.033 billion), Health (N44.619 billion) and Environmental Protection (N34.953 billion).

Others are – Public Safety and Order (N15.547 billion), Recreation, Culture and Religion (N3.118 billion), Social Protection (N1.589 billion), Planning Reserve (N2.26 billion) and Contingency (N2.448 billion).

Fashola said,“ As you will observe, we have retained essentially the same budget size as 2014. This is for many reasons. One reason is that we have kept a zero deficit in order to ensure that the next government does not inherit a deficit. This will give them room to start off very quickly when their programmes begin to crystallize and they may need to raise funds in order to start off.

“Another reason is that our budgets, like all good budgets are not only defined by plans and expectations, they make more sense if they are defined by resources. Our resources have been severely adversely affected by the management and lack of transparency of the Federal Government and her agencies of the nation’s oil proceeds.”

Justifying the protest, Ikuforiji said it was imperative in view of the current happenings in the polity.

“We are here to express our grievances about the political situations in the country, especially about the Ekiti impeachment and the recent fracas in the National Assembly. We are fully with the lawmakers, all hands must be on deck to save Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.

While noting that the 16 years experience of democracy in Nigeria is the longest since independence which should be sustained, the Speaker said all concerned Nigerians should speak against the ills bedeviling the nation.

“It is the duty of every citizen of the country to defend our democracy and that is the reason why we had a special sitting today for the Ekiti lawmakers to express their view to the public.

“We want the governor to convey our grievances to the president over the situation in Ekiti and the National Assembly, it is an abuse of the legislature,” he stressed.

Fashola, while responding to the lawmaker’s plight, said it was unusual for the House of Assembly to stage such a protest to the state house.

The governor said that though the executive and legislature in Lagos state disagree but they are never on the opposite side.

“It is a very unusual thing to see members of the House protesting like this, though we disagree but not in opposite side. We have made a clear choice in a way in which we want to be governed.

“I share your concerns and every person who is concerned about Nigeria should also be worried about the situation in Ekiti Assembly and the National Assembly.

“I think Mr. President has a moral duty to the country. He should not be leader of a side,” Fashola said.

She arrived quietly that first day she visited us. On the governor’s birthday on June 28, 2012, the first couple spent part of the day with us here at the VTC. Our fortunes changed that day. Before leaving, the governor made a handsome personal donation and pledged to complete the renovation,” said Mrs Agbaje.

“When you are making your choice, forget about religion, forget about tribe because you are not choosing us to come and pray for you, but to work for you. God has already chosen the reverends and the imams who will pray for us and give us full spiritual diets.

“What we need now are people who will help us face our physical battles such as providing electricity, schools, security, health care and jobs. That is what we need.”

“It is election time and they will start coming with vote catching promises, but they have never kept their promises before.

“We on our part, we see promises as something sacred and must be kept. We make promises and we keep them. We promise to deliver 200 homes monthly and we have kept our promise. These are the physical examples that we keep our promise and it is not about tribe or religion,” he stated.
