Tinubu, Fashola mobilise members for APC registration

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has urged members of the party to register formally.

Addressing members yesterday at a stakeholders meeting held at the Lagos State APC Secretariat in Ikeja, the former governor said only registered members would get the party’s Identity Card and be recognised.

He said: “You cannot claim to be an APC member until you register. I appeal to you all to formalise your membership of our great party. The registration starts on February 5 and will last six days. It starts from 10am to 6pm daily.”

Tinubu said arrangements had been made to ensure a hitch-free registration, saying: “The registration forms are ready. They are pre-numbered and have security codes. Nobody can hijack or hoard the forms because they will serve no purpose.”

He urged members to register at the polling units where they voted last, telling those who have relocated to register in their new locations.

The party leader said: “Your physical experience before the registration officers is compulsory. You cannot send your passport and form. That is where rigging starts and APC will never encourage rigging. You will thumb print and you will be given a counterfoil, which you will present later for the collection of your ID card. Every one of you will have the opportunity to register. Do not postpone till tomorrow what you can do today. “

He warned against using the registration to create division among members, saying: “There is discipline in APC. If you are caught promoting division, you will be suspended pending trial. APC is my party. I do not have a group. We cannot encourage grouping or caucuses in APC. If you want to contest for any office, the procedure is in the party constitution.

“We want to show good example, good leadership and let people know we know what we are doing. We shall build this party to victory. Whether Hausa, Ibo or Yoruba, we will remain one. We will perform wonders.”

Lagos APC Chairman Chief Henry Ajomale hailed Tinubu for making the APC a formidable party within a short time.

Ajomale said it was in recognition of Tinubu’s efforts in building a virile opposition party that he was honoured by ThisDay.

He said Tinubu had changed the country’s politics, adding that he was confident that the former governor would lead the party to victory at the national level in next year’s polls.

Governor Babatunde Fashola urged members to conduct themselves with decorum during the registration, adding: “We should not fight ourselves over registration. Let us be patient, so that we can achieve our goal.”

Also at the meeting were the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire; Prince Tajudeen Olusi; Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora; Senator Tony Adefuye; Admiral Lanre Amosu (rtd.); Prince Abiodun Ogunleye; Mr. Ademorin Kuye; Mr. Rotimi Agunsoye and State Woman Leader Mrs. Adetoun Adediran.

Fashola names Ejigbo-Ajao bridges after blast victims

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, on Monday commissioned the 2.1km Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area just as he named the two bridges on the road as “January 27 Link Bridge” in memory of the victims of the 2002 Ikeja bomb blast.
The governor, who led guests to observe a minute silence in honour of over 1,000 victims of the horrendous incident 12 years ago, said such was avoidable if the authorities in charge had been alive to their responsibilities.
He said men, women and children perished in the Oke-Afa canal “because a national government led by the Peoples Democratic Party failed to do its duties. There is no other excuse for it. That was their responsibility to manage bombs and explosives and to look after the Nigerian military, but they dropped the bombs.
“Since then, they have pretended as if nothing was wrong.”
The governor lamented, saying the incident prompted his government to intervene by rebuilding the schools and hospitals located within the Ikeja Cantonment which were destroyed by the incident.
He said the Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road was another fulfillment of the state government’s promise in 2002 to open up the area as part of government’s drive to renew inner city roads.
“My predecessor promised you that day that a bridge will be built to link Ejigbo to Ajao Estate. I have come here today to fulfil that promise,” he affirmed.
On road rehabilitation in Ejigbo, Fashola berated the Federal Government for turning a blind eye to roads in the area, which according to him were damaged by the activities of tankers lifting fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s depot in Ejigbo.
“It shows the kind of respect and concern that the party that manages the Federal Government has for you, they will come back to you and ask for votes,” Fashola stated.

The party which held at Kumbi’s Events and Leisure Park, Ikorodu, was organised by the Olukoga Support Foundation (OSF).

His words: “The essence of this gathering is the need to celebrate and encourage our children’s education. As we know, education is not only a human right. but also a machine for change, and sustainable development. Hence it needs to be considered in any development agenda.

“The children’s time out, 2012 edition, had over 450 participants from the six Local Governments/LCDA in Ikorodu Division. In this year’s edition, we have between 500 and 600 participants. We hope to help our children understand their uniqueness and talents, and the parents to know that all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.

  • Fashola: tankers should be off roads

Fashola: tankers should be off roads

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has described last Tuesday’s tanker accident in Apapa as “devastating”.

Fifteen people were killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed when a loaded petrol tanker exploded.

Speaking with reporters yesterday after inspecting ongoing projects in Ikorodu, Fashola said the era of moving petrol by road is gone adding that Nigeria is one of the few oil-producing countries that still transport fuel with trucks.

He berated the Federal Government for not providing an efficient rail transport system, saying: “Everyone must take his share of responsibility on this issue. The Federal Government is the first to be blamed. There is no rocket science about restoring the old rail tracks. If the rails are working as they say, then we should begin to use it to transport petroleum products, rather than use the road. It will save the roads and fuel”.

Fashola said the incident, coming a few months after the revelation of mismanagement of funds in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), raises serious questions on how the Federal Government appropriated the funds.

He said: “There are talks about $45 billion being missing. They seem to be quite satisfied to tell us that only $10 billion is missing. This is a lot of money. One dollar of public money is a lot of money. But later, they told us they actually spent the money.

“Serious questions must be asked by the National Assembly, chartered accountants and Nigerians about who appropriated the money. Was it spent during the period the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor said they did not account for the money or was it before? And if it was appropriated, we can now begin to ask if the money was spent in the right places? Given that if we had spent $10 billion on building rails for the evacuation of fuel from Apapa and Tin Can Island, maybe those people would not have died. There are serious questions to be asked. First, was that the priority? Were those the things to spend them on assuming there was appropriation?”

The governor said such tragedies could be avoided if all levels of government carry out their responsibilities to the people and do the right thing at the right time.

He said: “The inferno is a tragedy. I cannot find any word to express how sad I feel, especially at this time of the year. We saw the same thing in Zamfara State. It is a year that has started on a bad and sad note. It is very painful and sad for the bereaved families and our hearts go out to them.”

On ongoing projects in Ikorodu, Fashola said work has reached an advanced stage on the 10 inner city roads, adding that the projects would be ready before the year ends.

He said the site for the building of the 240-unit housing in Akanimodo, Agboyi-Ketu Local Government, had been cleared.

Other projects inspected by the governor include the ongoing expansion of the Mile 12-Ikorodu Road, rehabilitation of Awolowo Road and work on the Igbogbo Housing Estate Phase 2.

    Fashola bags Olympic award

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola has been honoured as one of five global recipients of the International Olympic Committee Award for his contributions to sports development.

The award came barely a week after Fashola was named one of the 100 Top Global Thinkers for 2013 by a global personality assessment organisation, Lo Spazio della Politica (LSDP).

The Award was presented to the Governor at the Lagos House, Ikeja, on Tuesday by President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, Alhaji Sani Ndanusa, at an occasion where the Queen’s Relay baton for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was passed to the governor.

At the event which also had in attendance the British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Peter Carter and Leader of the Commonwealth Baton Relay Committee and Legal Adviser of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Mr. Sharad Rao, Fashola advocated collaborative effort by leaders of Commonwealth nations to improve the quality of life of the citizens.

Fashola expressed joy that athletes from the state are training to be eligible for selection as part of the nation’s team to participate in the games coming up in July this year, warning athletes of other countries of the Commonwealth to be prepared to contend with their counterparts from Nigeria who are coming to break their monopoly of that sport.

The Governor said the award rightly belongs to members of the team which he leads, adding: “This really is not my award. It belongs to all members of the team”.

Blame FG for tanker explosion – Fashola

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has regretted the loss of over 15 lives in Tuesday’s tanker explosion in Apapa area of the state.

Fashola spoke to journalists after inspecting ongoing projects in Ikorodu on Thursday.

Describing the incident as devastating, Fashola noted that the era of moving PMS by road has gone.

He noted that Nigeria was one of the few oil producing countries still transporting fuel with trucks through metropolitan cities, berating the Federal Government for not living up to its responsibility of making the rail transportation system work.

“Everyone must take his own share of the responsibility on this issue. First, the federal government. There isn’t a rocket science about restoring the old rail tracks. If the rail is working as they say, then we should begin to use it to transport our petroleum products rather than use the road. It will save the roads and fuel,” the governor said.

He said the incident coming just few months after the revelation of mismanagement of funds in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation raises serious questions on how the federal government appropriated the funds.

He said, “When one looks at the waste in NNPC. Now we were talking about $45billion that was missing. They seem to be quite satisfied to tell us that it was only $10 billion that was missing. This is a lot of money. One dollar of public money is a lot of money. But later they told us that they spent the money actually.

Fashola receives Commonwealth baton, gets IOC honour

Lagos State was the last port of call for the Commonwealth baton as Governor Babatunde Fashola received the delegation of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Tuesday as part of the baton tour of Nigeria.

Also, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) bestowed the highest honour on the governor as part of the 150 years anniversary of the modern Olympics.

According to the representative of CGF, Sharad Rao, the baton tour across Commonwealth nations was lauched by the Queen of England in October last year with the final berthing in Scotland during the Commonwealth Games in July.

He described Nigeria as an important country in the Commonwealth considering her performance at the games. However, the IOC plaque to Fashola was presented by the President, Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Sani Ndanusa, who said among the four outstanding individuals honoured across the globe based on his support for sports both in terms of providing facilities and organising tournaments.

The NOC boss said Lagos State has been able to stage 10 international sports tournaments, which he admitted was of international standard. He said these qualified the governor to be considered for the honour.

According to Ndanusa, the choice of the governor was based on his immense support and contribution to sports development in the country.

“The IOC trophy is presented to an outstanding individual, who has contributed immensely to sports in a particular country. Four outstanding individuals are expected to get this award this year and Governor Fashola has been chosen as one of the recipients of the trophy, which also marked the 150 years of modern Olympics”.

IOC also considered Fashola’s contribution particularly his involvement in sports as a former athlete in bestowing him the honour of the IOC trophy.

In his response, Fashola, praised the CGF for its efforts to unite the globe through the games, adding that efforts must be made by every nation to provide quality service to its citizenry.

He described the IOC award as a confirmation of the performance of the state Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development led by its commissioner, Wahid Oshodi and his team.
